StarTopic Nintendo General Discussion Thread |ST11 Aug 2022| Everybody's 11-12 Discussion Thread

It was in the hypothetical timeline where Nintendo didn’t buy them

I mean, there was a reason for the split with Namco. People can even go read online about how Monolith Soft thought they were losing creative freedom under Namco and it was someone at Nintendo who advised them to keep doing their unique work. That's what lead to the eventual transfer of acquisition.

Any board games any of you could recommend? These look good.

There's a boardgame thread already and some recommendations there Do you like boardgames fami .Can't say about the newer releases, but I'll take a look at the video later, got curious about it.
I'll always recommend Concordia because I really love it, but if you're just getting into modern board games it may be not the best one to start.
Also I highly recommend watching reviews by Shut Up and Sit Down. Even when I don't agree with their position on the game in question I feel that the review can give a general idea about why they came to that conclusion and their videos are usually funny (or sometimes cringy, I mean a lot of times are cringy).

Not to say whether or not people's concerns for Splatoon 3 are founded or not, any individual can make that judgment for themselves, but it's...funny? Telling? that Splatoon 2 was a game that was an extremely iterative sequel with meta changes outside of one new mode (Salmon Run), and we got Splatoon 3 coming out with Nintendo showing us...an iterative sequel with meta changes, with our main hope of something different from the predecessor being one new mode.

I do wonder what Nintendo is aiming for here, even with the caveat that this game would've come out a year ago if COVID didn't happen.

My nose has been itchy and my eye has been watery all day, along with a slimy throat. Allergies? Perhaps, but I never had them.

Ultimately, I blame Nintendo for not having a June Direct, throwing everything out of whack.

Well, I think one of the strengths of Splatoon outside of multiplayer fun, is the story mode. Both games came with single player story content that was well thought out, creative, and of course, a narrative and heck of world building. I expect the 3rd entry to follow suit. And if they add even more single player like the Octo Expansion, which was fantastic, even better.

Don't fix what ain't broke as they say. The core loop is fun as hell. Of course one iterates and I think it is silly that they just keep making expansion packs, especially if they want a new setting.

Only thing outside of refinement and improvements they can add is a new mode.

Can we quit horsing around in this thread already?
You have the right to remain horse. Anything you horse can be used against you in horse. You have the right to talk to a horse for advice before we ask you any horses. You have the right to have a horse with you during horsing. If you cannot afford a horse, one will be appointed for you before any horsing if you wish. If you decide to horse horses now without a horse present, you have the right to stop horsing at any time.

When I first listened to this theme, it felt familiar.

Turns out, the beginning in particular is used as the motif of Picross S6. Here's a sample:

Now I wonder if every Picross game's music takes inspiration from classical music.

Thank you for reading.

The pony went up to the wolf and said can you yell at the moon for me I am very angry at it. The wolf said sure but why don't you do it yourself? The pony replied I am a little hoarse.

So I was browsing netflix yesterday and they showed a really uhn.... not expected selection of US Documentaries:

But the second one seems to be correct acording to this topic.

I mean...the Splatoon 2 single player was also extremely iterative of the first game's, and it's part of the reason why Splatoon 2 felt as derivative of the original as it did at launch. The weapon switching is a big deal, but the structure and progression are the same, the collectibles are mostly the same, and the game even focused on characters from Splatoon 1. It's mostly on par with Splatoon 1's outside of the less impressive final boss encounter, but it couldn't help but feel like "second verse, same as the first." I also don't think the world building from the sunken scrolls was as interesting this go around, but that's subjective.

Octo Expansion was a much needed shakeup in that regard. Same core Splatoon mechanics, but a different structure and a different style and aesthetic did wonders in making the mode feel more original (with the caveat that it is a DLC and thus reuses bosses from the main mode). Not to mention a way more interesting and memorable endgame.

Yes, don't fix what isn't broken. But also don't just give us "more of the same" for a third time, ya know?

I'm still shocked that the original Xenoblade 1 was even made. For context, it came at a time where Japanese developers, JRPG developers in particular, were struggling to make quality games on the HD consoles. You had some decent ones on 360 and PS3 but they were being eclipsed by games made in the West. So image a relatively newly acquired Nintendo studio who is known for making mostly linear cult-classic RPGs proposes to make a new game, then called Monado: The Beginning of the World, a new IP, for the Wii. The game will dwarf other JRPGs in size, on weaker hardware, while also being story rich and cinematic. Oh, and the composer team will be stacked with some of the industries best. And it's semi-open world with a hundred hours of gameplay.

In terms of scope, this was a massive undertaking with enough risk that any other publisher or developer would put their full weight behind to ensure that it doesn't fail. But it did get approved by Nintendo and with the seeming belief that the game would probably still be pretty niche. It had to be all that Wii and DS money Nintendo had at the time. They were willing to take a risk with Xenoblade because they were making fat loads of cash elsewhere.
I remember Iwata stating some like Nintendo bought Monolith Soft precisely because they wanted a long-running RPG series; I remember reading something like Iwata wanting Monolith Soft to create a series that could become Nintendo's own Final Fantasy, but I can't find it now I'm looking for it.

It's also the case that collaboration between Nintendo and Monolith Soft started before the acquisition. Obviously, there were the two Baten Kaitos games, but before that Iwata and Monolith Soft had experimented with their Earthbound remake pitch (which sadly never saw the light of day). In the context of Nintendo wanting a dedicated RPG series like Final Fantasy, and their preexisting relationship, the acquisition makes a little more sense. But certainly, I doubt anyone at the time foresaw Monolith Soft becoming Nintendo's largest subsidiary and a key part of the development of Zelda.
I saw people on the other forum yesterday speculating that they could’ve made the game and Bamco and it would’ve been multiplatform. I really don’t think the game could have existed without Nintendo though.
It certainly wouldn't have happened in the form that it did, given Takahashi offered to cut the game down when running behind schedule, only to be given the time and resources required to finish it properly.

As much business as I've done on eBay, you'd think their algorithm would know me better:

This is so painfully inaccurate to my tastes that it's almost funny
