StarTopic Live A Live |ST| Livin' La Vida Vida

I reached the final chapter and hope to finish it before Xenoblade Day. I'm really enjoying the game despite some of my issues.

Imperial China: Easily my favorite. I think it has the best pacing and compelling characters.
Wild West: It's short but I think that's a strength. The gimmick is pretty unique and I didn't mind going through it twice.
Present Day: This is Mega Man and I love it for it.
Distant Future: Walk from point A to point B and trigger the next cutscene. That's all really.
Near Future: The song is amazing (you know what I'm talking about), but I felt the chapter overstayed its welcome near the end.
Prehistory: I'm probably just dumb but I had a hard time following the scenario for this one. Weird difficulty spikes also.
Edo Japan: I found it to be a chore to navigate, but I love the setting and the concept of the chapter.

Also...
Middle Ages: A bit too much backtracking, but the final reveal is amazingly well done.

Beat Live a Live today. Did mostly 2 chapters per night (minus Edo cause I had to start all over again).

The chapters are short enough to keep you invested and their end seems like an episode from a tv.

The Middle Ages ending was fantastic with the twist at the end. It had that Shakespeare feel ending. And if you do the True ending the outcome and VA performance of The Dark Lord is on another level

The advice I would give to immerse yourselves into these world is to turn off the mini map.

It can be helpful if you are stuck, but otherwise it will make your journey very guided and that's a shame.

Honestly, I barely used the radar.

Anyway, one story to go and then redo Edo. I did the pacifist route to only find out I had to
ignore the prisoner. Cause now he doesn't kill the Eight Samurai's in front of the final boss. sigh

Yeah I'm also greatly enjoying the game.
I did near future, far west, prehistory and present day for now.
Near future was a bit too long and it dragged on a bit but the ending sequence was amazing
The far west was great, amazing atmosphere and fun characters and classic western story, I really like western movies so that's a big thumbs up from me
The prehistory was really charming and probably the story were the battle system is at his best with a big party and a lot of fun attacks and hard battles, also you can throw doodoo at the enemies 10/10
Present day was also great, you get to beat up Hulk Hogan, I don't need to say anything else.
Can't wait to play more today.
Also the presentation, look and soundtrack of the game are all amazing it's crazy to see the comparison with the original SNES game

I turned the radar off in Octopath and I plan on doing the same here. I agree it’s good if you can’t find the current objective but it clashes horribly with the 16-bit stylings.

I finished the Present Day and Wild West scenarios today. Dug both a lot as they were both very unique. Only have to wrap up Edo Japan tomorrow to move onto the eighth scenario.

Incidentally, I do want to say I keep seeing people here put the name of the eighth scenario in spoiler tags…it’s labeled on the back of the box right alongside all of the rest. All eight scenarios have a screenshot attached and a picture of the hero’s sprite so you can easily recognize too the front cover has the eighth hero prominently on it. I do think not spoiling what’s in it is super welcome and cool. I definitely don’t want to know more about it until I get there, but its existence is hardly a spoiler...

Yea, that was one of the more surprising things about the marketing around the remake. It's an unlockable and wasn't referenced in the packaging for the original release so that's probably why people are spoiling it

I'm now playing the Distant Future chapter, and already finished the other 6, so:

Pre-history: I enjoyed the humor and the more open sections, thou their lack of talking annoyed me a bit ngl.
Imperial China: It's one of my favourites. Great story and characters, right to the point, and some gut-punching moments.
Edo Japan: The stealth mechanic is really cool, but I tried to do a pacifist run only to find in the end I HAD to kill some guys because I hadn't done an obscure thing like one hour earlier. Probably the one I have more mixed feelings towards.
Wild West: This one is really cool, has a great atmosphere and characters. I only wished I could find out more about each character's background.
Present Day: I really like the whole fighting game parody thing, though I found most characters bland.
Near Future: Among my favourites as well. Great characters, over the top writing, and a really good end.
Distant Future: I haven't got too far, but I'm enjoying the atmosphere a lot!

Just rolled credits! Wow, what a game. I've loved this game for years, and to see it redone like this is just surreal.

MASSIVE endgame/ending spoilers, as someone who beat the original multiple times:

HOLY SHIT I had no idea they added a brand new final boss. In the original, the game ends after the face off which each of the Odeos, but now they added that final face off with everyone. Incredible. And then Oersted frees himself and deals the final blow?? Chef's kiss.

Only problem was that since I was rushing to finish before Xenoblade, I didn't think I had to level up my 4 other party members. But we still got the job done lol

It is 2022 and I am playing a legal copy of Live A Live in English. I cannot believe this.

Two minor nitpicks: I wish the d-pad wasn’t auto run for that old school feel. Plus that’s a bit of a change coming from Octopath.

The menu UI really isn’t grabbing me. I didn’t like the look of the Romancing SaGa 2/3 remakes and I don’t like what they’ve done here. I wish it was closer to OT or the original UI but scaled up.

Only got to play for a very small amount of time tonight but I’m starting with Imperial China. I’m saving Far Future, Prehistoric, and Near Future for the end since those are the ones I either played or beat in the original version and I’d like to see some of the stories I haven’t played first.

Thats pretty cool! I like that there’s some parallels now with Chrono Trigger and how you have to do a boss rush for the first phase before the real fight begins.

I assume the secret hero rush mode is still intact?

Gotta finish up 2 more trials and the super bosses before I'm off to finish this game. Remake has been absolutely fantastic though I do wish they made a few qol changes in the final chapter. Specifically I wish
They had just added a way to switch our characters without having to back track through the world once recruited. This is especially frustrating when you want a specific piece of equipment off a specific character who's not in the party.

Hey everybody, hope you're having fun with the game! Could someone tell me if there are difficulty settings i.e. an easy mode?
There isn't. So far nothing too hard, each heroes has a few very broken abilities that can kill the final boss of their chapter in 4 or 5 hits, and they give you more than enough healing items (and even the lesser good items almost heal you completly)

I always play in easy difficulties in JRPG because I suck whenever a game asks you play it strategically, but the lack of difficulty setting hasn't been a trouble for me at all so far.

For the most part the game isn't hard, but it's also an old school jrpg through and through. A level or two can be the difference between struggling against a boss and absolutely clowning them. There are also a few spots you can potentially save and get stuck under leveled/geared with no way to get out.

So far I did :

Prehistory : found it a bit boring, you don't really do much yet it's a bit long. Though I liked how fucking wild they went with the fart jokes. There's like 4 attacks involving farting and poop lmao.

Imperial China : my favorite one !!! Love the setting, the characters, the training gimmick, and the fantastic climax setting... Also, super cool abilities.

Far West : fantastic setting, fucking love a JPRG based on a western. A bit disappointing that it's only like 3 fights though. The two protagonists and their relationship rocks though.

Present Day : fucking roooooocks. Love the Street Fighter 2 parody, love the gimmick of having to get hit by a technique to learn it, and love the fights. Fantastic abilities.

Now onto Distant Future. Heard it's mostly a story scenario, with just 2 or 3 fights. Will make for a little pause after the combat heavy Prehistory and Imperial China.

Played distant future and it was incredibile, what a story and what an amazing ending.
Definitely the best together with ancient China which was also amazing.
Done all 7 chapters, now it's time for the reason why this game got a cult following. I can't wait.

Anyway this game is great, definitely one of the best of the year! Not all the segments are good (present day being boring and Edo being confusing to navigate at times), but there's more hits than misses. The bite-sized nature of each section keeps the game feeling fresh. My favorite individual sections were Imperial China and Old West. The Medieval section was really interesting too, with a well told story. Great music throughout the whole game too, with Megalomania being the obvious standout.

So happy that this game got a great remake and an official localization!

The voice acting in this game has been a bit uneven, pretty solid to good, I'd say, with maybe a few small misses here and there, but DAMN the VA for
Streibough in the first part after completing the 7 stories fucking killed it.

Just finished the Near Future chapter, and despite being a little long, I actually really liked the ending.

Question! Haven’t started the game yet. Would it be possible to play this game with a SNES NSO controller? As in, would I be able to completely play the game without needing sticks at all? I feel like it would just feel right with a SNES pad.
A little late but the only thing I can think of that you wouldn't be able to do is walk slowly. I use the d-pad on the pro controller to move and it's auto-run. Walking requires lightly pushing the control stick 🤷🏻‍♂️

I'm most of the way through the Near Future chapter, and I have to say it's quite a bit weaker than the other two I've done so far (the western chapter and Distant Future chapter). It's a lot more JRPG than the other two, but I don't think this game's RPG systems are very good honestly so that's not a good thing imo. There's still a lot to like about this one, but the battling isn't really one of those things. The battle system just doesn't feel very deep, very balanced, and with the short episodic nature of the chapters, there's just no flow to it all. Not much of a problem for the other chapters I've played, but it's a pretty significant flaw with this one for me.

My hope is that the battles in some of the other chapters are better than what this one has to offer, but this chapter has definitely offered by far the largest taste of the battle system so far and it's not doing much for me.

Thankfully there's a lot else going on with this chapter that's quite good, and I've read positive impressions on the ending of it so I'm looking forward to see how it wraps up.

Finished today during my lunch break (so that this evening can be Xenoblade 3 time). Fantastic remake of a game that I'm glad more people will be able to get to experience.

Wild West was so good. I absolutely botched the crap out of the scenario because I didn't leave myself enough time to send people out to set traps; I was a bit distracted during the first part of the chapter so I probably missed the dialogue where they told you it would take time for the traps to be laid... somehow I managed just barely to clear the battle by a hair, but if I hadn't I definitely would have had to redo the whole thing from the start...

What a great little game though. I find it a bit funny how this chapter is obviously based on The Magnificent Seven, which itself is based on Seven Samurai. You'd think if a Japanese game were going to pay homage to one of those it would be the latter 😅

Prehistory : found it a bit boring, you don't really do much yet it's a bit long. Though I liked how fucking wild they went with the fart jokes. There's like 4 attacks involving farting and poop lmao.

I kind of agree with this, it was cute but a little too long. and i felt like i had to grind at times which was weird. the ending though... how is this game not rated M 😂

Why is the prehistoric chapter so difficult? Are you supposed to grind?
You definitely should aim for a few fights and don’t forget to craft some good armor for the main guy at least. I only ran into trouble for the first boss fight. Smooth sailing after that.

Just beat Prehistory. Easily my least favorite chapter of the 5 I've played. Not much worked for me here, but I guess I liked the more open world design?

I finished Live A Live tonight since my copy of Xenoblade was delayed arriving. I think it’s a game I’m going to appreciate more with distance. I liked it a lot, but never fully loved it either. Yet there’s some really cool things it does that I’ll fondly remember including Megalomania which rocks. I saw a lot of people rank the stories so I’ll take a stab at it starting with my favorite:

Twilight of Edo Japan: My favorite even from just the demo. This feels like a complete game in its own right. The inspired castle layout is compelling to explore and ultimately satisfying to conquer. Oboromaru was my favorite character to play as with a wide range of devastating attacks. He has control over the battlefield like no other and being able to set traps / tile effects is the pinnacle of Live A Live’s combat. I don’t know if I’ll ever play Live A Live in full again, but I definitely want to play this again sometime and get the alternate endings.

The Middle Ages: Before delving into spoilers, I’ll just say I really dug the story and structure of this chapter. It’s very different from all the others in a cool way.

I didn’t see the final twist of the halfway mark coming. I used Oboromaru, Cube, Sundown, and Akira for the back half. Loved tackling the new dungeons with a full party of four, though fights did eventually start dragging as optimized fights were boring to replay (I’d have especially appreciated a turbo mode here). Dug the final battles against all of the Odios (can’t believe I didn’t notice that lol), though the end of the story fell a bit flat for me sadly. Like it had the framework right for big moments, but I think not getting enough time with all of the characters and their lack of chemistry/interaction kind of made it not work for me. There’s a big moment when Oersted/Odio asks what made you different from him and frankly I just don’t know. Seven characters RPG’d right and the other being a silent protagonist didn’t? Eh…I guess. Like the script says where Oersted failed, not enough love, but again eh for me. I think a few extra scenes could have helped sold it more. So yeah, on paper I love it, but the execution needed to be a tad better to truly sell it.

The Wild West: What a neat concept for the story and level. Dug gathering supplies, setting up the traps, and seeing it all come together. What was up with that horse twist though? Definitely made me expect more from the finale lol.

The Far Future: I liked this one a lot mainly because it kept me guessing until I bumped into the answer before the story got there (which I largely loved). Ending was very cool.

Ancient China: I definitely liked how the story played out, it hit unexpectedly hard at one point, and the action ending power trip was very cool.

Present Day: Very cool set up here in structure. Only my first fight was challenging sadly (I think you get quiet stat boosts after each fight?), but I still dug it. The story being so minimal drops this down for me.

Prehistory: A satisfying enough mini RPG romp. Level up your cave man and gorilla buddy, craft equipment, and save the day.

The Near Future: I liked a lot of the details of this chapter, like the world map, the weird lore/world, and the big ending. I also liked the middle where it most felt like an RPG. It felt a bit shallow and drawn out at once though and the fights felt like an annoying formality. Too much going against this one.

That’s all of them. I said at the start I’d like this game more with distance and well even writing this post made me like it a bit more lol. Glad I played it, but despite my enthusiasm for the various pieces I guess it didn’t fully come together for me. Cool game though, definitely still highly recommend checking out the demo at least.

Finished the Distant Future chapter, that was very good. I really liked the atmosphere and the story (even if I figured out the "twist" pretty early on).

And that was the last of the initial seven chapters for me, so it's on to the middle ages chapter now.

HD-2D OST is now available on iTunes (and maybe Apple Music?):

just seems to be iTunes in Australia (which is usual for Square Enix, they only put a few up on streaming services and make you pay for cds/digital soundtracks which is fine)

Finished the game today.

I actually really loved the way the Middle Ages chapter was done. I knew before that Oersted was actually Odio but that's about it, so exactly how that ended up happening was a surprise to me.

And then the final chapter gave me (for lack of a better reference) Avengers vibes. All these characters I got to know over the course of ~20 hours teaming up to kick some ass. And the very final boss (the one that, to my understanding, is new to the remake) was just great.

Overall, a fantastic game. And I really hope we get some more HD-2D remakes (looking forward to the Dragon Quest 3 one, definitely).

Maybe this questions was already asked and answered, but...

is there the posibility for the game to be released on other consoles or PC?

I asked because i've been burned several times by third party exclusives on the Switch (NMH3 being the latest example) and i prefer to use my Switch only for exclusives.

So I've finished Distant Future, Present, Edo Japan, and Imperial China and I've just started prehistory. Even though I pre-ordered the game, I was not expecting to enjoy it this much.

I'm also playing this game back-to-back with the Octopath post-game stuff, and it's really impressive what they've done visually and voice acting. We'll see how the remainder of the game goes, but this went from a nice palate cleanser before Xenoblade 3 to one of the highlights of the year.

There's a possibility for PC and XBox ports in a year or two since that's what happened with Octopath Traveler. There hasn't been enough time to see what happens with Triangle Strategy to know if that's going to be the trend going forward.

But honestly there's not really going to be much benefit to picking this up on a beefier system aside from the resolution bump.

Finished the game yesterday before starting xenoblade 3.
This game is amazing, it's not something truly revolutionary or anything but it's an experience like anything else and it's crazy to think that it's a remake of a game that came out nearly 30 years ago. I expected something more from the endings but it deserves it's cult status.
Give it a try and see for yourself, this game is the definition of an hidden gem.
HOT TAKE: this is yoko shimomura best work ever

I have to second the advantages of playing LaL on other platforms. There will be zero performance advantages, although I understand that some ppl prefer to play games on particular systems.

It's an interesting question about later ports to other platforms though. I'd assumed Octopath was a forever exclusive based on the promotion Nintendo gave, but I can't come up with a reason for locking Triangle Strategy and LaL to the Switch. There are JRPG/tactics fans on every platform and they'd likely be well-received.

Finally started this game this weekend. Started on Pre-History due to many recommendations to start with that or Imperial China as a starting chapter. So, some odd difficulty spikes there, no? Random assortment of mobs not far into it that seem to do way too much damage and I dont do enough (even crafted weapons!). Entered a random battle earlier with two mammoths, a giant wolf thing, and two saber-tooth tigers? I was like wtf!?!

I'm in the later stage of the game, with the option to either do optional dungeons or head straight for the final dungeon. Can't yet decide what to do. I want to head for completion so I can start Xenoblade 3 soon, but I'm probably under levelled. When it comes to the optional dungeons, I also know it'll be easy to return and just do this stretch of the game again in the future.

Hope to be able to continue this week. Edo and Ancient China have been my favourites so far, though I found the level design of the former a tad confusing at times.

I would recommend doing them. It's good to level everyone up and also get them their best weapons. Plus none of them are really difficult or anything like that.

Yeah, I had a peek at the final boss and levelling is definitely necessary!

Finished it earlier this week and I absolutely loved it. Was very cool how different each chapter felt from each other and how they played with the RPG elements. And the Yoko Shimomura soundtrack is absolutely phenomenal. This is in my top 10 favorite RPGs for sure, it's just so different from anything else I've played. Very happy this remake happened and think they did an incredible job!

And please keep giving me games in the HD-2D style.

Loving it so far and the snappy not too long sections are enjoyable - Though I do play a shorter offbeat chapter between the big JRPG chapters
So far (in order of playing):
Near Future (great 90s sci-fi anime vibes) > Present Day (fun combat trying to trigger all the attacks and a nice ending) > Imperial China (just getting to the final boss, a little more traditional and less wacky than the others but a good time still), will play Wild West or Distant Future next before Prehistoric and the last "wacky chapter"

I can only say it gets better storywise. They all play very differently, there's a few 'traditional RPG' chapters in there like Imperial China and a few more you've yet to play, but some of them play out unexpectedly.

I just rolled credits and all I can think about is that Square Enix should have a dedicated studio to HD-2D ports of its older games (starting with Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy). My other big takeaway is to question many of the decisions I made over the course of my 26 hour playthrough. I'm pretty sure I got a bad ending.

So I'm in the Final Chapter and I'm fairly certain I ran into a bug that sucks pretty badly.

Sundown's horse disappeared, and I think permanently. I ran into it across the wooden bridge and saw it head south into the brush, but I decided to ignore it for the time being and advance further into the Archon's Roost, where I triggered the re-opening of the skeletal mouth and made my way into the dungeon, before deciding to head back out to complete Sundown's dungeon. However, upon my return to the overworld/Silent Woods, the horse is nowhere to be found. I know exactly where I'm supposed to go to continue finding the horse and to trigger Sundown's dungeon--I actually did the entire dungeon earlier tonight before getting stomped by the dungeon boss and reloading a previous save since I was underleveled -- so now that I'm properly leveled, I'm pretty sure the horse has fully disappeared and I will no longer be able to access Sundown's ultimate weapon.

EDIT: just realized the character in question probably needs to be in my party in order to trigger the dungeon. If that's true, now I just need to figure out how to access my full party...

to get a party member back you need to go to where you recruited them in the first place

Found this out last night and proceeded to play for another 2 hours, love it. Thank you friend! Volume of random encounters aside, I'm finding the final chapter spectacular so far, and I think I'm near the end. Hope you've enjoyed it as well
