StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (New Staff Post, Please read)

You’re right but they were the same hardware like oled and the lite. This time you sell me a branded Switch of a new game and than a console capable of playing this new game but better?
Both DSi and New 3DS were the Pro versions of their respective platforms. Much stronger than previous iterations, both were posed to have exclusives but third party decided not to go that route. Only difference of Switch Pro is this time they will.

Never understood the 2024 fixation that some people have. There’s no hint, argument, leak or rumor that suggested that was the release of a new Switch.
Same line of thinking as OLED lite. A persistent pessimistic permutational prediction.

Thinking that if there is a "pro" that it must be followed by a "true successor", as if these devices have to slot nearly into either category or follow the PS/Xbox line to the letter, is imo misguided. The Wii was a new generation and the new 3DS wasn't, the latter was a bigger jump in power, correct me if I'm wrong.

Game engines are scalable, Nintendo is still selling their evergreen titles at full price and adding DLC, and they intend for households to have multiple Switches. We are aware of only hardware config from the Nvidia leak using NVN2 and that's Drake, a "generational" leap in specs but will probably be sold as another Switch. It'd be equivalent to a new gen with an extended cross-gen period and enhanced backwards compatibility. It is Nintendo who has to do the heavy lifting to market it properly and eventually phase out the OG Switch. So if someone says "Switch pro doesn't exist, it'll be Switch 2" I don't think that changes anything about the actual hardware we should be expecting.

Im also not convinced that any Switch successor will have a new main gimmick just because Nintendo had the whole Wii to Wii U or DS to 3DS thing. I think hybrids are here to stay for a good long time and they can change the OS, joycon, and display or add features like wireless streaming and assymetrical multiplayer without ever abandoning the Switch concept. Nintendo has very explicitly learned from the mistakes of the Wii U. I expect a VR/AR device in the future as a third pillar to Switch and mobile, not a replacement.
Agree about changing things "around" the Switch idea, but not the idea itself! Going along with this, Muncle commented that the current game cartridges will work with this new thing!

New 3DS had major gameplay improvements and exclusive games. It's literally the exact same situation we're currently talking about.

It had 6x the CPU power.
Can't pass up an opportunity to say how much I hate the N3DS comparison. N3DS was a physical hardware refresh first, internals upgrade very distant second. It had maybe 4 exclusives that anyone would think twice about and added SNES VC support. The level of enhancement to existing games just was smoother framerates and faster loading. To the average consumer, it was just a 3DS with a bigger screen and an analog nub. Whatever side of the tiresome revision/successor argument one is on, I guarantee the new Switch model will not be perceived as anything like that.

It's not the "6x CPU power" increase that matters, it's the games are made possible by the jump in hardware. On N3DS, the difference wasn't even noticeable. On the new Switch model, it definitely will be.

People need to realize that Nintendo has toy company DNA in them and any speculation about them holding back on new hardware because a special edition console was just announced needs to get thrown out the window.

If you think Nintendo isn’t capable of announcing this new hardware the day after everyone receives their Splatoon 3 OLED consoles, then I have a special edition Todd McFarlane action figure I can sell you.

I'll add my 2 cents

If the next switch is market as a "pro" we're going the 10 year plan alá GB -> GBC.

If is anounced as a sucessor than we will have a 2 year cross-gen perid.

That and 3DS titles only ever had to target its 240p display, not much in the way of immediate performance or IQ gains could be had. Meanwhile Switch games on Drake will get an immediate benefit by running at capped framerate and res, with greater potential unlocked through patches.

The difference was certainly noticeable for games that went from 30fps to 60fps (MHG I believe was one, or Hyrule Warriors Legends). The fact that it wasn't taken advantage of much does not negate the fact that it was a noticeable boost in processing power.

I don't disagree that the difference we're expecting here is much more significant and will be used differently, but in this context the idea that they wouldn't release a special edition right before launching new more powerful hardware has been proven wrong twice.

At this point I prefer to just wait to see how Nintendo will position this product but I dont think it will be anything like DSi or New3ds.

I don't think there's gonna be too big a difference between the two. the GBC had a lot of exclusives and this jump is bigger than that

I guess we’re bound to see BOTW2 in the next Direct and if Switch 2 does come out with it I suppose it will be revealed at the same time as BOTW2’s release date. September does look likely.

At this point I’m more keen to hear what exclusives are coming for this new Switch, hoping it’s more than just a couple, if devs can get games running on it that can’t run on the OG I hope they release them all.
1-2 switch sequel

Let me know if anyone with a native tongue can read it better.

Regarding the first point ... would machine translation really mix up "announced" and "released" like that?

This is definitely the plan. Just like GBC and unlike 3DS, third parties are thirsty for extra power. Support will be so big, it'll act like a successor system in the end, much like GBC.

I hate it so much because the sentence in bold isn't even true in most, like, 99% of games. Very few 3DS games actually took advantage of the hardware and all of the other ones ran exactly the same, without any improvement whatsoever.
Yes, it's really awful and I can't thank you enough for pointing out how this comparison, while legitimate, isn't really a good indicator to where Switch's successor is going, like at all.

And you don't feel that you are being just a tad disingenuous here?

TX1+ as you called it was such a minor upgrade Nintendo didn't even care to advertise it as such beyond putting the console in a different box. This has literally nothing in common with Nintendo releasing a console that amounts to a mini XBOX Series S and should have exclusive game(s) on release (at least according to Nate Drake who this forum holds in high regard). Erista to Mariko was an almost completely silent upgrade.

It was a die shrink, which meant you could do one of 2 things, increase performance by about 30%, or match performance of the old model and gain several hours more battery life.

Nintendo very very very heavily advertised the increased battery life.

Nintendo Game Boy
Nintendo Game Boy - Pocket Model
Nintendo Game Boy - Color Model
Nintendo Game Boy - Advance Model

Just wanted to see how that would look written out like that, lil bit of Deja Vu. 😊

It does in a sense, Pro is the evolution.
Sucessor is the paradigm shift.

The expectation that X game will work on the older switch is greater if it's a pro than if it's a sucessor.

Thank you both so much for everything! This is incredible. It's really been enjoyable getting to interact, in this way, with other gamers across the entire world like this! That's been more exciting and fun for me than even the leaks and rumors...though that is DEFINITELY a lot of fun too, haha! :ROFLMAO:

I love translating so I will gladly help anytime I can! Also regarding machine translations: sometimes they can be quite accurate but other times they will simply misinterpret or even omit whole sentences. Always good to double check everything (as we have done in this thread so far!)

Thanks again for helping out, you provide a unique and exclusive gift for us mad speculators.

As long as my translations are still read critically I'm glad to help! While I do have experience with translating Chinese to English and the other way around, neither are my native language. Always feel free to call out any awkward phrasing or flat-out mistakes!

They of course would be capable of doing so but it'd kind of be a bad gesture to anyone who bought the S3 unit. Evidently, Nintendo doesn't have to care about that, and buyers that are aware of the rumors would be doing so at a risk

I thought your native language are Chinese.

When it's released, I predict Drake will be at least $100 more than the OLED. The Splatoon OLED can still exist as a fresh yet cheaper option, or as an alternative purchase if Drake is in short supply. With multiple Switches per household the two can coexist on shelves.

GBLight was released not far from the GBC :D

I know, I know, different time, but let me have fun dammit. I don’t need your “ackshuallee 🤓” comment.
