As an aside, I wanna say that as someone who works in (non-gaming) journalism I kind of abhor this blog-ification of the medium. It has become a bit of a directive from the top of our company as well, that we don't need to just report on and contextualize events but also opine more in op-eds, columns etc. because that's where you can push somewhat more controversial ideas which is what people love to engage with online.

The downside is, that it also leads to forced "opinion articles" like that GameSpot piece which is basically just a glorified LiveJournal entry with no purpose beyond transporting an opinion that people can either agree or disagree with and consequently fight over. It's not informative, it's not useful, it's not even entertaining and thus has very little journalistic value.

Probably been about 10 years since I last played Portal, hadn't forgotten a thing except how hard the soundtrack slaps

Wake up new Mario render dropped.

Nice buttons mr. Mario

Seeing now Yoshi just appears out of nowhere in the original. Can’t say im
Surprised. Felt like they made Rabbid Yoshi first and then forgot about then OG. Even then, rabbid Yoshi doesn’t appear until the very end of the 3rd world and you get him first then Yoshi lol

I keep thinking I kinda want a Steam Deck but then I remember how much I hate dealing with crazy PC-specific bugs that everyone else seems to not have all the time.

This is one of the reasons I use traditional sites less and less for gaming news. Most of what I'm interested in gets funnelled to me here; I'll still check Eurogamer and Polygon a few times a week but not with the regularity I used to.

Fami is love; Fami is life: Fami is a newsfeed.

I hadn't forgotten this because I listen to the Orange Box OST at least once a year
Speaking of the orange box, its funny that there is enough code from portal in the collection to recreate half-life 2 on the switch. Granted same engine and stuff.

Controversial take incoming:

Skyward Sword has some of the best content I have experienced in any game I have ever played. Mainly speaking about the desert areas and dungeons + ancient cistern.

If they would have cut about 20-30 % of the game it could very well be one of the best games I have ever played.

The end.

I wanted to start a thread for it but I might sound like a nostalgic fool and the thread will probably die off very soon so let me complain here:

I HATE how Enix has great franchises (to me anyway) that actually really seemed to be forgotten. Games like
  • Soul Blazer trilogy (Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma)
  • Just Breed
  • Jyutei Senki
  • Wonder Project J
  • Mystic Ark
  • Planet Laika
Like come on, DO SOMETHING WITH THEM Square-Enix, jeez...
You forgot Brave Fencer Musashi

i get vast majority of my gaming news here, and what little I don’t see here first is on YouTube or Era. I haven’t been on a traditional gaming news site in years.

That discussion on ERA has brought out the worst of both fanbases. The insecurity and sensitivity of Switch fans and the smugness and self-satisfaction of PC fans.
I'm surprised there are any Switch fans left to argue in the first place. Then again masochism can be pretty addicting.

Oh god I'm deleting my entire game engine directory on my PC now that I've migrated it to my external drive, I'm terrified.

edit: somehow pressed both “reply” and “post“ while adjusting my iPad stand. Disregard.

Real talk though, I think we need a Summer 2022 Speculation thread pretty soon. I don't think we'll see another General or Mini Direct until September, but we'll probably get stuff like a Mario Kart DLC announcement, a Splatoon Direct, Switch Sports update, Indieworld, etc in the next few months. Discussing it in this thread would derail it constantly.

I know a lot of you don't know who I am and this is off topic but I hope some of you can wish me well tomorrow. I have a really big job interview tomorrow. I recently graduated but have been looking for work since January with no luck. Tomorrow's interview would be quite literally the perfect position for me.

It's also the longest interview I've ever had; running at two hours long. o_O
You are gonna KILL IT. You are a STRONG, SKILLED and CAPABLE WARRIOR who will SUCCEED IN ALL YOUR ENDEAVOURS, including this JOB INTERVIEW. There is nothing to FEAR but FEAR ITSELF.

May this manifestation of GOOD VIBES find you ALREADY SUCCESSFULLY EMPLOYED. FUCK YEAH

Nice buttons mr. Mario
I see trees in those reflections!!

popped in to resetera to see if there were any interesting news and they have another "steam deck rocks switch sucks" thread lol. godspeed to them, one day they'll finally kill the switch if they post hard enough.
I'm very passionate about the topic of the Steam Deck because of my Linux nerddom and following Proton since its inception, I love that there is an affordable mobile device out there that enables a seamless console-like experience while still allowing for tinkering and hobbyist ideas. I'm waiting on an eventual OLED model to purchase one. So I hate that the inherent coolness of this official Valve mini-PC is muddled with people console warring.

The incessant noise that Steam Deck makes the Switch "obsolete" because they're both portables is silly. To this day, I can't think of many devices that actually match the Switch's seamless hybrid functionality (e.g. swapping between mobile and desktop without a hitch, immediately swapping performance profiles and pairing wireless controllers without a fuss) except maybe the Analogue Pocket (?). There's the PSP video out, laptops with HDMI, Retroid Pocket, Ayn Odin and now Steam Deck that enable external displays but require further tinkering and don't feel as nice as the Switch's UX. The Deck has its own value by being a mini-PC which enables a host of modifications and access to a massive library of games.

Convenience is a general reason why people prefer consoles to PCs. It seems that people lack empathy surrounding this. I play PC games at 4K 60/120 Hz on an LG CX so I have tasted the fruit of bleeding edge high-fidelity gaming and it is glorious, but it is still inconvenient compared to just booting up a console and picking a game. Even if that inconvenience is a small amount, it makes a big difference over time.

Portability bolsters convenience, so it bugs me that if someone says "I'd like a Deck, but it's too large to consider carrying with me" that a common response is "oh but the Switch is unergonomic and is just as big with the Hori pad attached". Can't force a subjective experience onto others, I think the Switch's form factor is OK, and there are ways to improve the ergonomics without making it as big as the Deck e.g. grips, Switch Lite. So yes, Deck being a massive device is a fair reason to not want one if it is inconvenient or unaesthetic for the person using it. It not having an OLED display is a fair reason to not buy one, just as it is a fair reason to not get a Switch because one doesn't want to rebuy games.

Ultimately the Switch is doing gangbusters, it is a solid idea that will last and Nintendo are in a good position with future hardware by enabling DLSS. So I don't think it's worth taking any "Deck will eat Switch's lunch" comments seriously. I just wish the console warring rhetoric would end, and people would stop trying to force a perspective onto others.

(Ugh, I typed way too much but I've had these thoughts since Gabe Gear was announced... uh, apparently almost a year ago. Time to lie down)

I though there were rumors of july mini direct focus on first party? But better keep that under wraps and hope everyone gets ready for the october full direct.

Have someone tested this armor?

I need some ergonomics for handheld mode and it's the cheapest thing. I found it for €14.99.

These kind of "Steam Deck rocks, i have no reason to turn on my Switch anymore" takes might make sense to a very vocal group of people within the online gaming community, journalists and enthusiasts, but in the end, to the large majority of consumers, they're tremendously different products, with different goals and different audiences.

I have been playing Sea of Thieves for a few days straight and just gotta say, this might be the most fun I’ve had with a Rare game since…maybe Kameo?

It’s really fun. A shame a lot of former Rare fans write it off because it’s seriously very Rareware in a lot of ways.

Deck is cool, but the console warring nonsense is annoying. Not everything has to be a contest.

I still am waiting for my place in line - I did pre order one out of impulse - but it’s too expensive. At least for the models worth a damn, which is model 2 and 3. But I honestly may wait for revision 2 to see if they make it a bit smaller.

The correct way to play Mario + Rabbids is to remove the Rabbids from your team ASAP so the rest of the game becomes a Rabbid Hunting Simulator.
