Yup, something’s fishy, need to know what they’re up to!
Needed their stuff. This was NOT it for me. Like not one game I will purchase was shown. It’s really time for a more powerful console. Not just to want power but for western devs to be able to support the brand. I see them keeping the switch alive and I know a lot of people are happy about persona and such but🤷🏾‍♂️

I find it hard to believe that with an install base of 110m that Japanese game fans who like JRPGs or Atlus games wouldn't have bought a PS5 by now if they were genuinely enthused at the idea of playing Persona 5.

Okay, I imagine there are quite a few people who are Switch owners who weren't aware of Persona 5 "back in the day" who are now interested. But there can't be any big persona fans who were into the series in 2017 who sat patiently for 5 years. At that stage, how interested are you, really?

And anyway, my point was that you said that it wasn't really a late port. The original launched a month after Switch, and the port launches as we're all sat here 5 years later speculating about whether Switch 2 / Switch Pro will drop early next year. It's late! That's all I'm saying.
Mixed. Its often hard for people to argue for more then 1 platform (fiancially), and if they have 2 or 3 games, they may just dont buy that platform. Then you have teens, where the parents are deciding funds. Then you have a situation like mine, where i wanted to buy a second hand ps4 pro when the ps5 releases, or a ps5. then the price increase for games was anounced, they discontinoued the ps4 pro and people price hicked second hand ones, and aftere 3 months of searching i gave up.
There are still a hand full i would be interested (Horizon, Bloodborne,...) but with how its going it feels like im gona fair better to wait till i need a new PC.

And dont ignore, that many people just dont want a stationary console, but a portable/handheld one.

Oh, oh, also theres the fact that you have some japanese household in big cities, where there is no tc because of space limitations. =O
Nier Automata on Oct 6th, Mario Rabbids Sparks of Hope on Oct 20th, Persona 5 Royal on October 21st. Someone please help me. I have too many games I want to play in October and not enough free time.
Nier First, then Pokemon, and after that Persona, since it will be the longest, and people seem to tend to fall of if they have a gap where they dont play it for a while.
(And we both know, you will buy them instantly and be stuck in agony what to play =P)

I don't even know if I want to do this but I checked Resetera to see commentary there.

50% of people there are shitting on all games and the direct and clearly with salty-ish commentary like "oh just switch, well bad decision", or "oh now switch gets this game so late" etc.

I was permabanned for far less than the console warriors in that forum :p
Yo, I get that some of us still harbor certain feelings towards the communities we hail from previously, but I think it'd be more productive to just keep things focused on Fami, if possible.

Is there any western pubs/developers supporting switch still? Was it me or I didn’t see any western made games?
There was Mario + Rabbids, the Portal collection, Minecraft Legends, Blanc, Return to Monkey Island, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, Railgrade, No Man's Sky, and A Plague Tale: Requiem. Seems like it was you.

Surpisingly good Direct. If you combined these announcements with a typical 1st Party Direct you would've had a really good E3 event :p

Looked into it, its not that bad. Its pretty well split, with mostly being B or C, and just a fraction being D...
Setting it in context: there are a lot more people that have other platforms to.
-> ports are less enticing, and some of the multiplatform games they probably would prefere in higher fidelity... with that in mind a direct that has really little switch exclusive stuff just is not interesting to them, and thats fine.
On the contrary, if youre more a portable/japan/switch only player, then this one was actually pretty good. (and fami tends to be more of that group)

must be miserable caring more about the hunk of plastic and metal than the games you play on it

Western devs are supporting the brand just not the ones you want. They could be supporting the brand with their back catalogue stuff now but aren’t. If you waiting for a more powerful device to change that up then it won’t change that much from what we see today.

Not much shown here for me, but the M+R sequel getting a release date is awesome. That might well end up being GotY for me.

Hopefully Nintendo releases a first-party game that I am into this holiday along with it. I don't think Sony is coming through on that this winter.

Just wanted to reiterate that this was a great Direct and I hope everyone got something they like here. There seemed to be plenty of variety, and lots of games overall, including a few surprises.

Was Doraemon Story of Seasons known about? That seemed like an interesting crossover, don't know if they've done it before.

That’s quite possible and why my buying a switch revision or whatever is up in the air. I don’t care how powerful it is and how it runs Nintendo games. If major AAA third party games are not being supported I don’t need it. Looking like the best gaming lineup for me might be a switch OLED and a Steamdeck.

I believe it's the second such crossover, though the first may have been Japan only? The trademark for this game was leaked yesterday but I don't think anyone connected it to Doraemon

I guess it was me. How the hell did I miss Railgrade.

oh so you are one of those people that think that triple ayyy games are the only games that matter. that direct must have been the worst thing ever then.
Actually I had zero expectations so it was easy to watch and not care that nothing for me was shown. Also there are more games then AAA but there are also games that should be on the switch which aren’t. 🤷🏾‍♂️

I would say if you are waiting for AAA 3rd party games to show up much more then now don’t hold your breath as it probably won’t change that much from what we are seeing currently.

I feel like its more a western : japan ratio thats the problem here if its not AAA.
The switch is definitely leaning more into the japanese market, and onto people that prefere that style.
Feels like microsoft has that market in its hand.
Im curios where that leaves sony.
High fidelity eastern games?
Their own big AAA productions?
Sports games was also a strength for them (FiFa in europe..),
but thats changing somewhat, so well see where this goes.
If we get a switch pro/2 that can reach spitting distance of Ps5 and get the Japanese games running, then PS could be in trouble.

Only just now catching up so sorry if I say stuff that's already been said. I'm surprised Tactics Ogre was MIA with the leak happening. It can't be that much farther away. Hopefully, we'll see it and Final Fantasy Tactics in september. I'm guessing Pac-Man World is the Bandai Namco 3D action game that some thought was going to be Baten Kaitos. It looked nice, I have fond memories of the Pac-Man World games, 2 was my favorite - wonder if it'll get a remaster in the future as well.

Sony already lost the JP market with the DS the JP userbase that PS has comes from the West and they are not losing it due to a more powerful Nintendo console, most big 3rd party publishers will still have PS5 as their main console for multiplatform releases while Switch 2 will be for mid-low tier output.

I thought it was a pretty good Direct overall. No denying it did feel a bit like "we're approaching the end of the lifecycle" at times... but accept that'll be subjective - and given the age of Switch not at all unreasonable either.

All eyes on September.

(I really don't think July has any legs beyond a Splatoon 3 Direct).

They were hiring for a Nintendo contract work game, Pac-man is a multiplatform release and Nintendo has nothing to do with the game.

That’s all I was trying to say. I agree with your post. It’s seems from the west we just get thrown filler games and we are supposed to be happy about it. Japanese devs are killing it on the switch right now.

I would hope that native ports of Nier Automata and P5R would settle some of the weird hang-wringing / concern trolling over what the Switch is "capable" of running, but I don't expect it.

They probably got the Metroid Prime Remaster treehouse recorded. They’ll like “this is one of the greatest games ever. It’s highly acclaimed and looked at what Retro Studio has managed to do”

I hope they get an employee from Retro there…though it’ll probably be be Tanabe only lol

Nier Automata was a port that the developer itself said it was possible but people doubted it would be lol
I didn't think it would ever come to be fair but I never thought it was due to not being possible just that Square wouldn't bother

The most exciting part of Prime remaster is simply gonna be being able to watch the game get the love it deserves.

It is, non-hyperbolically, an all time classic. A high point of the medium and an expertly crafted showpiece of game design.

I can’t wait to watch the media and new generation of gamers fall in love with it - whether it be falling in love with it again or for the first time. I just can’t wait for it to be in the conversation again.

I’m excited for the reviews, the retrospectives, the social media attention of people playing it for the first time.

I can’t think of a game that deserves all of that more. I really hope Nintendo markets it with love.

If that sounds passionate, it’s because it is and I mean every word!

I'm thinking more news next week... Based on nothing but a gut instinct, lol

I'm reminded of the August/September period in 2020. iirc, it was like, indie world, followed by partner show, followed by mario direct, followed by age of calamity twitter reveal

We had XBC3 news last week, partner showcase here, Rabbids show tomorrow... Maybe next week, Advance Wars new release date or Bayo 3 twitter reveal?

This definitely felt like they ripped the first party stuff out of a regular Direct and just gave us the third party stuff. That makes it more substantial than I remember the previous partner showcases being.
