Anybody else kinda disappointed about the general reaction to this whole thing? Maybe I'm just less personally invested than I used to be, but we're still getting new game announcements next week and I'm getting a re-reveal to one of my most anticipated Switch games. There's still plenty of reason to be excited. And I don't mean to sound like a bootlicker, I've been critical about Nintendo in the past. I dunno. I feel like the next week is going filled with a bunch of angry posts about not seeing Metroid Prime or Fire Emblem and I'm not looking forward to it.
Im mildly excited, if Nintendo announces it's under 20 minutes then my enthusiasm will go down a bit. Hopefully it's 25 minutes or more.

It honestly doesn't even make sense to me to do a 3rd party partners direct. Like, 99.99% of 3rd party ports sell less than 1m units on switch. They just don't move Switch consoles the way first party games do.
Significantly less people will watch a partners direct, which means less sales for those 3rd party games compared to if they were in an actual Real Direct. It's not just a poor decision for customers, but financially for a corporation too.

Okay, last time I was here we were expecting an E3 style general direct on one of those dates. And the new development is that we aren't expecting that anymore; but the exact detail on what we'll see instead is fuzzy right now. Have I got that right?
Pretty much
So this coming week there are potentially two directs:
1) Nintendo Direct (of some sort)
2) M+R Direct
These are either on the 28th or 29th. With some suspecting the Nintendo Direct to be first then Rabbids the day after.

Probably there was no point in talking about it when announcing the Xeno Direct. It’s not Nintendo’s fault nor should they respond to when people hype themselves off of rumour or speculation.
Correct and correct.
I agree with you that one should hype responsibly.
I agree with you and am aware there are strategic, objectives reasons for a company not wanting to give information too soon or at all.

However in the scenario of 2 or 3 Directs in quick succession, I argue that they could have communicate the whole package at the same time last week. It would have appears to me as the best option to create a controlled hype and lead the viewers to have correct expectations.
It is but all speculations of course. We don't no what nintendo has planned and my point could be mot.

I personally am rather satisfied. I wanted to know how Xenoblade 3 looks and plays because it comes out next month and we had plenty of that. I find the prospect of the third-party Direct next week pleasant. I am sure we will get more informations about our beloved first party games in due time.

But I can also get the feeling of those who wanted a classic Direct for the celebration of it as a part of our interactions here, in the forum. The last news were a bit of an emotional lift, with many contradictory informations in quick succession.
I hope it settles down and we can appreciate what we get next week and have fun together.

What I can say, Rayman means a lot to many people. The franchise has inspired many developers such as Tim Schafer with Psychonauts and even Davide Soliani who has given many hints on Twitter about a potentially Rayman appearance in the future. Whether that means for SoH or something else, I don't know.

Dude i was joking. Of course i dont hate rayman and i wish he got new games or even made an appearance in the game.

as far as I understand Nate confirmed it will be a direct focussed on third party games with some first party announcements too. So basically kinda a hybrid of mini + partner showcase. He also said people shouldn't be too obsessed with the branding tho.

Could still be a really fun day. Not just the E3 caliber direct we hoped for.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
I did not. I said Nintendo can have a presence there -- didn't say they would. And if they do, it can be as simple as a game they are publishing from a partner studio like we had with Age of Calamity back in the October Partner.

I mean the expectation for a lot folks was E3 level presentations and reveals.
In theory we could still get some of these reveal. But it still stings after waiting all of june for it.

My personal opinion: I was really excited for BotW 2 in June after Aonuma announced the delay.
It stings that I have to wait even longer for a proper reveal.

If I was a third party dev I would be pissed. Nintendo is courting me for a big direct during E3. Awesome I’m on board. Oh wait E3 is canceled and Nintendo is going to slot me into a “partner direct.” Why not just have a big showcase anyway? Doesn’t make any sense. And I don’t see how that comes anywhere close to “fulfilling obligations.”

‘ey don’t get mad at me. Nintendo’s gonna Nintendo. This is my canon until proven otherwise lol

We didn’t see Sony give several titles a massive E3 platform. They had a third party focused showcase days before SGF. I don’t know the specifics of the obligation - but it’s an assumption that it’s not “you promote our games at your big June direct right next to your first party heavy hitters”

Well, that'd make sense. They could be all "Did you like that trailer? Well tune in tomorrow for MORE in a special focused Rabbids thing"

The point is that not all games announced in a Partner Direct would have the chance to be shown at all in a General Direct.

Being advertised in a minor Direct is better for them than not being advertised in any Direct at all.

thanks for the clarification & sorry Nate!

My personal favorite in the Rayman series is 2, specifically the N64 version. I bought the PS1 version on the PS3 and was shocked to learn the characters actually spoke English instead of the cartoon mumbling that was in the N64 version. The cartoon mumbling just gave it so much more personality in my opinion.

I loved this game as a child. felt like a real adventure back then.

I think it's understandable since people have been hyping themselves up for a direct all month with talk of, like you said Fire Emblem, Metroid, etc. People are always gonna react hastily and angrily to stuff like this, it's human nature.

Oh I’m not mad at anyone. Just trying to understand the analysis here that it’s to fulfill obligations. We know that it takes months to put directs together so either: third parties signed up expecting to be part of an E3 direct, the show was canceled, Nintendo decided to dip out and only advertise their partners; or Nintendo was upfront and said they weren’t going to do a big e3 showcase but want to advertise for their partners in June.

The first scenario stings a bit if you’re a third party partner. The second scenario is just a partner getting what they signed up for. If it’s the first scenario I wouldn’t be happy about the situation because a partner direct =\ a big E3 showcase.

I totally get why they went that route in 2020 too. But I don’t see why that would still be the case this year.

But we're still getting those? We just have to wait a little longer. People need to chill out a bit and stop saying that it's automatically going to suck.

That’s just the big side effect of a large part of Directs becoming such a big part of the "Nintendo fan experience". If they don’t have one every 3 months people get impatient and upset.

Being advertised in a minor Direct is better for them than not being advertised in any Direct at all.

This makes no sense. Any title shown 3 days from now could be shown in a General Direct in exactly the same way.

So here's my theory, Nintendo typically shows the press their directs prior to airing. Perhaps this direct will contain mostly 3rd party stuff and the only "nintendo" related trailer they showed them was the Mario Rabbids one, which had led people in the press to think its a mini. Because they are likely not going to announce more than maybe 1 or 2 new titles for this year, those were left out from the press preview to avoid them leaking. So maybe it still is a direct.

It sucks that we won't see Metroid until most likely September, but if Mario + Rabbids is dropping this summer (August?), I'm actually set until the Fall anyway with Xeno 3, backlog stuff, possibly Live A Live, and Rabbids.

No, there are minor games that may have the opportunity to have minutes in a Partner Direct that in a Direct would be relegated to the typical "three seconds of each game" reel.

While that's true, people need to understand that these hype topics are just people talking about what they want. If I told myself Ninja Gaiden 4 was gonna be revealed in June over and over, then get mad when it's not, that's kind of my fault and I shouldn't take it out on anyone else. We really shouldn't be getting toxic with each other because we hyped ourselves up based on pure speculation.

And still, the Direct hasn't even happened yet. Maybe it's good? lol

It also only makes sense if Nintendo was upfront about doing a partners direct. At that point it’s up to third party company to decide if it’s worth it for them.

If this is some kind of consolation marketing spot because they dipped out of E3 that sucks for any third party that thought they were gonna get a prime spot in a big E3 style direct.

Seeing so much blowback against Nate on Twitter because people love assuming shit that was never stated and then getting angry when it seems it won't come to fruition.

Not even gonna lie, I'd be a lot less cordial than Nate is being or just plain stop giving out any information at all. Sorry you're going through this @NateDrake

I really hope we don't spend July and August without a new N64 game.
It's a pretty realistic situation, considering NSO had 0 updates between July 2021 and October 2021 (when N64 and Genesis launched)

I know it's not true, but it'd be really funny if they only showed press third party stuff because they knew things would leak out, and they're keeping all their first party stuff to themselves until the actual direct airs.

I’m stoked for whatever we get next week

General Direct
Partner Showcase
Mini
New Hardware Announcement

Whatever! I’ll enjoy whatever they’ve got for me

Nintendo Directs don't have to fit a specific time limit like only 30-40 minutes, that's a choice. If these 3rd parties worked out a deal with Nintendo to show minutes of footage in a partners direct, no reason to assume Nintendo would only give them 3 seconds in a reel if it was a general direct instead.

Nate wouldn't have won either way with these people. And the worst part is he isn't even wrong, he never promised anything, just the date. Which is true.

Internet lives in the culture of hype and hyperbole, people are not to blame. Announcements have more value than the products themselves in this environment, just look at Youtube.

Since we got a DK TF port in one of the most DREADful Nintendo Direct Mini ever, do you think Nintendo can squeeze some Retro Studios juice to put Metroid Prime HD and a Prime 4 teaser in a Partners Showcase ?

If not, then I’m sorry to tell you that Bayonetta 3 will be cancelled and replaced with Babylon Fall because the game have now a whopping total of 0 (zero, nada, que dalle, rien, nothing) players. Mad because of this, Kamiya will release Scalebound for Stadia, but just 24 hours before Google closes the service.

So please, hate the Partners Showcase and save the world.

There's an important lesson about setting low expectations for Nintendo presentations, but we're going to forget it just in time for the next direct, as is tradition.

Companies have to pay Nintendo for space in the Direct, we know that. I'm pretty sure a Partner Direct is cheaper.

I definitely blame people for that lol

Is the consensus that there is nothing next week or that there is something?

Just planning my holiday evenings so that there's room for direct if one is supposed to come.

I agree, just saying why I think it's happening. When you have months and months of people getting themselves excited for this stuff thinking they'll see it in June, it's easy to lose perspective, not saying it's okay or anything.

Agreed that it could be good, I can't say I'm super excited but I'm at least hopeful.

This day is approaching. This has soured me on giving any advance notice of a Direct broadcast, tbh.
