Seeing how much the tone has shifted toward the next direct being a mini partner showcase has me mixed.

At this point, I would not be shocked if they just twitter drop the MK8 Deluxe 2nd wave of DLC announcement in July since that doesn't have to be in a direct. I'm genuinely expecting wave 2 to just be announced via a tweet next Nintendo gave Xenoblade and Splatoon dates+trailers on twitter in recent months and those easily could've been dated in a direct if they wanted to.

Nintendo just tweeting about Splatoon's release date last month for September release should've been the red flag for us that June may not hold out as we initially expected since it could've been a full direct mention if Nintendo wanted. At this point, the signs were there for June's rumored direct to be smaller than E3 type directs but we tried justifying our logic by past years. Plus with Nintendo honoring the obligations they probably had for announcing 3rd party stuff in June (because E3 was originally planned to happen before it got canned with the deals Nintendo made) also just makes sense. Had we had an E3 this year, I feel that Nintendo might've opted for a general direct but everything is weird at this point.

Though genuine question, what was the longest partner showcase we had in 2020? Since I feel that next week would probably be the longest time wise of the partner showcases. Like I wouldn't be shocked if it goes on 20-30 minutes for a partner showcase since Nintendo usually has a lot of 3rd party stuff they would show in June and I figure they are honoring a lot of obligations they had for this month...

Thank god Nintendo only puts out unfinished games these days, otherwise I'd be really pissed about not getting anny announcements from them.

Yooo something just populated in my head that had a lot of smoke during non-E3 week. It would turn this partner direct into one of the greatest directs of all-time. Nate even mentioned it.

You ready for the ultimate hopium?

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Backlog.

I am probably just gonna dive more into my backlog now after hearing this news. And try and keep busy until September.

How does the type of Direct change whether you focus on your backlog until September? If there were a full Direct, most of the games announced would be set for after September. Nintendo's lineup through September is already set. A full Direct wouldn't have changed that.

With E3 cancelled again I was a little suspicious of whether Nintendo would feel the need to put on their usual June show, but the murmurs of a late June Direct killed those suspicions. The moral of the story is to always be cynical!

Partner directs gave us Monster Hunter Rise and SMT Nocturne, and I'm pretty easy to please so the not-for-profit electrified hype train is not slowing down!

It sounds like Persona 3 and 4 are pretty much a lock, and just that would be enough to satisfy me tuning in now that my expectations are recalibrated. But we might also be getting Tactics Ogre, Rockman Taisen, DQIII HD localization, and dare I hope for Yakuza or Nier Automata or Persona 5?

If Bamco or anyone else wants to toss in some sale-fodder anime games, that'd be cool too.

EDIT: And FF pixel remasters collection! Bayonetta 3! HD ports of Nintendoji and The Last Story and F-Zero GX! Just because it's a partner direct doesn't mean we can't hype to unreasonability!

I apologize for the misunderstanding everyone I meant the Video Game Awards in December.

The point is that normally before the E3 Direct we have no idea of the dates of most Nintendo games.

This time we have known the dates of their entire line up except Bayonetta 3 and Mario + Rabbids 2 for a long time.

If it's a partner direct I'll predict the following
  • Sega/Atlus (Sonic Frontiers, Persona)
  • SQEX (Game Remake, New 2D HD game)
  • Capcom (Ace Attorney)
  • Namco (Scarlet Nexus)
  • Microsoft w/Nintendo (Goldeneye remake + 64 expansion pack)
  • Tecmo Koei ( -----Warriors Game)
If it is just before Sunbreak I expect a Sunbreak trailer as well.

If this is a Partner Showcase Mario Kart won't be here. Who knows when we'll see it next?
well if it's not there, maybe a shadowdrop via twitter in July? Nintendo announced the release date of Splatoon 3, a gigantic Ip, via a shadowdrop trailer on Youtube, so since apparently we won't get a summer showcase everything is possible at this point.

Yeah. Mario Kart dlc you can drop on Twitter any random day. You can also announce a Splatoon 3 direct any random day. These things don’t need to be in a direct.

Y'know what, If ace attorney 7 is there then all would be forgiven actually.

The fact we didn't get the usual E3 direct.
I also forgot the last time Nintendo made a big showing at TGS there was when BOTW was in development.
Nintendo hasn’t been part of TGS for the better part of a decade plus now.
VGA is very hit or miss but they have either not shown up or provided very little.

Neither or these are going to be used as an sort of rollout or blowout for their games regardless if E3 exists or not.

Also, seeing as we are getting a partner showcase and with the recent months being release dates and announcements on twitter, does this mean the twitter direct voters are the winners this time around? LMAO

I still think it will be a General, or at worst, a normal Mini.
I've posted it in this thread before, but the Xenoblade Direct leak stated Xeno3 will get another trailer in the next week's Direct. It cannot be a Partners.

I like the personal touch (developer interviews, slower pacing) and first-party focus. The games are definitely better now, but I preferred the Directs themselves when they took their time and had closer looks at each game.
That’s fair. Like when I look back at E3 2014 that fits it to a T (plus we got Treehouse on top of it) and it makes it one of my favorite directs of all time. It had the personal touch, so much first party goodness, and some dives into the games.

I don't feel it has to be a blowout, in the case of Metroid HD/4 they could just show an update trailer to show off the game.

I would trust Nate for now and then be pleasantly surprised if its a General this week

This is interesting. And that kinda correlates with Nintendo labeling the X3 trailer on YouTube a "teaser".

But at this point I need the Snitch himself to tweet out a photo of a General Mills cereal box before I can get back on that train.

wasn't the E3 2014 Direct the one with interviews in locations that was aimed to remind the tone of the game? like, the Splatoon Director and Producer interviewed in the main hall of an acquarium. Loved that showcase.

Guys, of course we’re getting Fire Emblem in the Partners Direct!

Fire Emblem Three Hopes Expansion Pass, more precisely.

Tezuka was in a arts and crafts store I believe for Yoshi’s Woolly World. It was really good.

It is also clear right Nintendo are "sitting" on a bunch of projects which are either unannounced, or have zero footage:

  • Detective Pikachu from Creatures Inc
  • Metroid Prime 4 from Retro Studios
  • completed project (September 2021) from Retro Studios
  • stylish medieval fantasy game Grezzo
  • fashion game from Syn Sophia
  • 2D game at EPD 8
  • 2D game at EPD 10
  • 3D game at EPD 8
  • something at Vanpool
  • contract project at Good-Feel
  • remaster at Bandai-Namco
  • next mainline Fire Emblem from Intelligent Systems/Koei-Tecmo

Out of all of these, the only one I'd question coming to first gen Switch is the remaster from Bandai-Namco, which seems to have only started recently. Everything else I expect you're looking at as playable on gen 1 and 2 of the Switch.

That being said, I'm not saying this to prove hardware news is imminent. It just points a partial picture of how many games are on the go at Nintendo and I don't think anybody needs to concern themselves over the software picture.

Since I don't care about this Direct anymore (I'll watch it, obviously)... I will start focusing on hardware from now on. Let's go Switch 2, Team July!!!

E3 2014 was pure fire.

If we get something this fall, I hope it will be of the same caliber (not necessarily of the same type) - it certainly has the potential for it.

Man I knew we would have this whole Direct circus as soon as the ESA announced there would be no E3 this year. With E3 happening at least we know there will be E3 Direct from Nintendo. Screw whoever celebrated the downfall of E3.
