So. This final boss.

I don’t feel like I’m making any headway on several attempts.
Shoot four missiles at the black hole attack.

When you get late enough in the fight to see the sun attack, drop a power bomb.

Both of those attacks, when destroyed, will heal you about as much as a counter would.

So what about the
gold
aura? I can damage him in every other state, but just spent 15 minutes staying alive and unable to do anymore damage.

Normally enemies flash white if they're taking damage. The robots do that, so that's your indication that it works
Thanks. I’ll have to look for that. I’m probably not that good at distinguishing the weapon effects vs the on hit effects if it’s not super obvious.

Alright. So I’ve mastered that
first phase.

But holy cow…
the wings…
For that one,

Just focus on learning to avoid his attacks and hitting him with ice missiles

That's the only phase where it's not possible to heal

What. A. Game.

I just want to go on record saying that I don’t regret all of my Metroid hyping for the last several years. Every ounce of that speculation and waiting with baited breath was worth it to be watching the credits of this game tonight. No hyperbole here. I’m jazzed as jazzed could ever be.

Incredible achievement.

What Nintendo first party games got ZERO post launch support?

Not talking just paid DLC, like anything. Because even odyssey got Luigi’s balloon world and some costumes, LM3 got those multiplayer updates.

Just trying to weigh Dread’s potential. I can think of Paper Mario: The Origami King and Link’s Awakening?

Off the top of my head:

-1,2 Switch
-Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
-Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
-Xenoblade Chronicles DE
-Yoshi's Crafted World

Ok this one item upgrade on Burenia that requires you to hold a speed boost through multiple areas while falling, sliding, avoiding two slopes, and staying out of water while doing a shift thingy mid-air is insane. I'm watching youtube demos and I can't replicate it :/
I’m trying this one now. Bombed it about 11 times in a row and had to turn the game off for a bit

-Astral Chain if that counts as first party (imo it should since Nintendo owns the IP)

Ok so I decided to just finish the game at 99%. I was tired of attempting that last item after a long time and I didn't want to burn me out and ruin what has been a fantastic experience. I have an extra save file to try and get it again later.

Anyway I finished the game tonight and yes, this currently will likely be my GOTY going into the end of the year. This felt every bit like a Metroid adventure. The bosses were fantastic. That final boss was amazing.
I don't know if it was intentional but I loved that "one-wing angel" moment
.

I loved every moment I spent traveling the map searching for all of the power-ups. I normally HATE backtracking in games but it just feels so good in Metroid. I remember the first time I played a Metroid game and unlocked the screw attack. That feeling of invincibility was amazing. This time around I felt it again.

I know one thing is for sure, this won't be a one and done for me!

Honestly though, I could see them doing a paid DLC with a new map. Apparently there was a lot of cut content in Dread, they could easily make a smaller stand alone adventure. If they really want to push the expansion pack, they will need to go hard on DLC, and there's really only a few options of currently released games.

It would either be Mario party superstars, Pokémon Legends, or Dread. Nintendo is kind of out of games to do big DLC for.

Whew, still riding the high of finishing the game a couple of hours ago. Final fight took about an hour maybe. Had the first phase down cold but the second was fucking me up, especially the attack where you have to screw jump around. Felt damn good finishing him off.

Overall took me 11:59 at 95% (only a few Shinespark items left that I didn't want to bother with). WHAT. A. FUCKING. GAME. Easily one of the best games in the franchise and Switch exclusives. Samus is such a badass, the bosses were epic, the movement/controllers were smooth as butter, everything came together to make for one excellent game. Simply astounded. A couple of the EMMI sections got a bit frustrating but the game is good with checkpoints.

Metroid and Samus are back.

So. I’ve been on complete news blackout with this game since E3 and went into it completely blind save the initial trailer.

And now - I’ve finished the game

To double-down on being out of touch, I'm typing this up without really reading what everyone has been discussing.

So I imagine that a lot of this has already been beat to death by all the chatty omega-gamers that finished it 45 seconds after launch and whatnot - but for whatever it’s worth, here’s my brain-dump in a conveniently segmented spoiler tag.

Warning: def tldr

The History

So, just some context, I’ve been playing Metroid since the NES original where it stood as a Saturday morning cereal-bowl favorite for years as a kid. I’ve probably been through Metroid II, Super, Fusion, and Zero Mission about a half-dozen or so times as well, and overall consider myself a moderate but reasonably enthusiastic fan of the original 2D series. As in, I'm certainly not remotely as fanatical as others, but I do really enjoy them quite a bit and have a history.

I went through Samus Returns around three times to really give it a fair shake, and was mostly positive on it by the end of the run. I felt some of the attempts to integrate cinematic touches (such as the drill robot chase) didn’t lend itself well to replay and had some other minor gripes, but overall it was decent enough given the context it had to work in.

In other words, I was excited to see what they did with this one.

The Capital "A"

So….Dread.

My first impression of this game was that it has to be the most inhospitable introduction to a 1st Party Nintendo game I'd seen in a long time. The game really wanted you to fail. Even more than NES Metroid's 30 health and a pee-shooter wanted you to fail. Surprising.

As time went on I realized why - they wanted to make it clear - this is an action game.

This is, in fact, not just an action game - it's a Hardcore™-focused Modern Action (with a capital “A”) Game with the G-fuel stache-stain to match. It just happens to be wearing Metroid boots.

Controls that manage to encompass every button combination possible on a modern controller, big pattern-based bullet-sponge bosses, plentiful mid-fight cutscenes, Shenmue-style QTE’s (in-fight counters that refuse to let you proceed until you hit them), “cinematic” presentation that interupts the game to show you what riding the boss' forehead would look like, twitch-reflex fast-dodging, corny bloated story, the evidence is pretty overwhelming.

That's a Modern Action (with a capital "A") Game checklist right there.

And, honestly, that's a bit different than I expected. Because I really don't think the old Metroid games really are Action (with a capital "A") Games at all. They’re sort of progression-based, adventure-exploration, key-and-lock style games with some action-lite elements peppered in for punctuation. You don't really need a lot of timing or execution to get through a Metroid game. You just need some curiosity, patience, and ability to spam missiles at things.

I’m not saying that the games can’t change, or that this makes it bad, but it definitely wasn't what I expected.

The Franchise

So at this point, three things seem clear to me

1) Nintendo is viewing Metroid as a “hardcore audience”-exclusive franchise and is adapting accordingly

2) Nintendo does not make “hardcore audience”-exclusive games themselves, so they are leaning on external teams that mostly bring in some flavored derivation of rest-of-industry action components to the series

3) They really, really want to make a full-blown anime out of the storyline, but somehow have to keep limiting that vision to cornering it inbetween video game bits instead.

Once I just accepted all of that for what it is, I was ready to go.

The Evaluation

I’ll start with the positives

(+) Visual Design

The game certainly looks slick and it was pretty nice to see so much detail integrated into the backgrounds. I also really like the default Samus costume (not so much the later ones). Could do with a touch fewer cuts to Samus' behind-visor eyes getting wide to show how surprised she is however.

(+) Some New Abilities

I’d be hard pressed to call any of them truly great or instant classics, but I appreciated the fact that they tried to add in some new mechanics here regardless of the results. Storm missiles seemed like it was just integrated to let the player do airdashes all day without needing to stop and aim.

(+) The Delayed Morph Ball

I have to imagine everyone was starting to really sweat not having this a couple of hours in, and similarly felt a pretty nice hit of dopamine kick you over when it finally popped so late. They actually do a fairly good job on a couple of occasions of making you really long for a particular upgrade - but the morph ball hits a lot better since we’re all so used to having it early.

(+) X-parasite: The Return (gameplay)

Somehow didn't know this was coming and just loved it. Great ramp up of enemies, great float-to-new-form element, good call-back to Fusion….just overall solid fun.

Alright, now that I've buttered you up, let’s hit some gripes:

(-) EMMI

We started calling these guys “the fun police” around here as they always show up when you’re just beginning to enjoy yourself and throw you into checkered-door jail where you play a tedious and boring diversion in order to proceed. I don’t think the stealth mechanics are very well done at all, and rhere are way too many of these encounters that are all essentially the same. There is also zero tension in any of them. If you fail, you start right by the door and try again. If you don’t know where to go, just fill out the map, die, and start over. Big miss that I bet only seems more tedious and unnecessary on replays.

(-) Trial-And-Error Boss Fights -

None of these are hard, really....they’re just quickly killing you until you recognize the patterns. There is also way too many of them for no real reason. It’s almost like this team is afraid of making a game about exploration and constantly tries to stop you from doing it for very long. Figuring that if they pepper in some game over screens it will up the excitement a bit. Spear-bird fights were already getting dull on the first playthrough. I can't imagine it being engaging on replays.

(-) Feels...Extremely Linear/Restrictive -

I realize a lot of Metroid is a bit of an illusion of free choice, but here they really seem to want to prod you forward instead of sideways. There was constantly a door locking behind my ass to prohibit any thought of exploration, and a firm hand shoving me towards the next story beat or EMMI chamber that I could have done with a lot less of.

(-) Cut-Up Map Design -

I try not to complain too much about loading, but they really needed to go one way or the other with this. Either have separated zones that don’t interact much, or try to make a linked-map. The weird hybrid they finished with makes the load times more frequent and doesn’t add anything to compensate. Axe the warp points, or restrict them to warping within a sector. Jumping to another sector for a small map corner and an upgrade feels a little janky when it involves that stuttering transition animation.

(-) Story -

Call me Miyamoto, but I think Metroid was better without all this attempt at lore. All of it just comes across as ridiculous. Throwing a little bit into gallery unlockables like Samus Returns is fine, but trying to make this epic twist-and-turn Sephiroth style one-wing Father Beak conclusion where Samus turns into a puke-green Metroid and brings "Balance to The Force" or whatever it is that they did here is just too much.

(-) Shinespark rules/controls -

Eh. This is probably nitpicky, but if you want people to use some granular detail about an ability to get completion in a Metroid game - it wouldn't kill you to at least try to mention what the rules are somewhere first. There was just an incredibly poor job (or really, no job) of explaining the particulars of shinesparking in the game - especially when it comes to keeping momentum up a hill and those kinds of obscure details. Minor gripe but kind of bugged me. This was the only thing I had to look up to figure out what to do throughout my run.

The Wrap-up

And that’s it.

I ended up getting the 100% completion. I still mostly enjoyed it. Time was about 12 hours. I assume I got the bad ending.

I would currently rank this as the worst of the 2D series, right below II/Samus Returns. But still in the 7/10 range.

I definitely can’t see myself replaying this one a few decades from now like the last ones, but I'll probably give it a second whirl at some point. Who knows, maybe that will change things in a way I don't expect.

That;s about all I have to say about Metroid Dread.

i have like 5 upgrades for something i haven't even found yet.

it's obviously a superbomb

really great game so far! i'm lost all the time.

Just finished this and I really loved this, much more than I was expecting. I was not very into Samus Returns (never finished it), so I was a bit hesitant on this. But I’m very impressed by what MercurySteam did here. It plays wonderfully, and I love the way Samus controls here. I think the boss fights are the best in the series and I had such a great time playing through it. It felt really game-y and I appreciate it. Really excited to see where the series goes from here.

Loved this game. Very, very happy with it. I played through Zero Mission and Fusion in preparation and I was not disappointed.

Doubt there will be DLC, but I'll be there day 1 if they launch some post game DLC. Makes me really excited for Prime 4.

I don't think I can really be bothered finishing the game multiple times for the rewards, perhaps on the future.

I know most people praise the game, but I think that makes it even weirder for me to read some of the very specific criticism that gets thrown around.

For example that there are too many buttons in use? What would be the alternative? Less powers? Really weird.

Another one is a bit spoilery:
some people want Samus to talk way more and I'm just sitting here and loving her vibes. She clearly isn't and never was a person that talks to herself or makes comments about everything.

Picked this up again after not playing it all week and wow the underwater EMMI sections in Ferenia with the one that can see through walls are annoying. Can’t wait to melt its dumb face off.

Yeah. That one is straight up trial and error, memorize the correct path and execute escape with all of your abilities.

Make sure to use the grapple beam when you can for big bursts of speed underwater.

I got through and have just picked up the gravity suit. Carried on suitably buzzed to be getting stronger until I reached a new elevator back to a previous area and as it was loading…the software was closed due to an unexpected error. Fuck sake! I thought the game closing error was at the end of the game but maybe there are more. That error message always makes me fearful my Switch is about to cack it, BD2 did it a lot too for a while.

Many games struggle in the third act, to wrap up the story, to maintain gameplay challenge, to simply avoid the stutter and putter toward the obvious end.

Dread has a perfect final act.

Waking up this morning, my only big gripe I have at the moment is the loading times. The took way too long, especially when traveling between levels.

That was the only time where loading was an issue in my experience. Loading after dying was super quick, I wasn't even able to read all of the tips ever.

Well, I reached Raven Beak. Looking forward to finishing the game one day when they release baby mode DLC!

Keep at it. I promise is more than possible and quite easy one you learn the pattern. Took me about 5 tries and I had the whole thing mastered. You can even read my struggles in real time from my posts last night. 😅

For context, most bosses took me 3-5 tries at least. Even learning patterns and tells doesn’t necessarily offset my terrible reaction times, panic, and inability to keep a handle on the controls. There are some bosses where I still can’t actually manage the counters they offer.

I’m pretty pleased I even made it this far, I suck at games.

I’m awful most of the time too! Took me over 14 hours to make it through the game, and several several attempts on most bosses.

I finally got 100%, about 11 hours in. Now to enter the final area...

I think possibly I’m under-equipped and am going to go back and look for more missile packs and health. I keep running out of missiles and can’t manage with just the regular charge beam, and the boss I’m stuck at hits really hard. It’s depressing surviving long enough to be out of ammo and realising you’re screwed.

Almost all bosses give you a way to replenish ammo. Possibly all of them, I'm having trouble thinking of one that doesn't.

Yeah, I’ve triggered it on other bosses but not this one, and I still don’t know how to avoid some of its attacks. I guess I’ll go back and keep trying because I’m now hunting upgrades and the shinespark stuff is annoying me. The one on the lower left of Ferenia feels impossible to do with what I know, so I’m assuming there’s additional tricks I don’t know about or the timing has to be perfect.

I’ve watched videos showing me how to do the shinespark thing, I just can’t do it. It feels like they’re playing a totally different game lol. I think I need to cut my losses and accept 100% is not for me, I’ve never been able to do shinespark stuff.

I fought the final boss with about 140 missiles and never came close to running out. Also, I’ll tell you how to get ammo and health refills during the fight but I’ll spoil it:

shoot his black hole attack with four missiles. It’ll break and drop health and ammo. I think his sun attack also drops health and ammo if you destroy it but I’m not sure.

How long is this fight meant to be? It feels endless. I’m using missile barrage to try and get hits in, and it basically just loops through all the attacks, the bit that you can trigger a counter for item drops, and then back. Am I failing an additional counter that would end the fight? I feel like I’m not even getting past the first phase since I have no idea what the sun attack is. I genuinely can’t tell if I’m making progress at this point lol.

Keep shooting missiles at him. When he turns gold, you can only damage him with counters, so watch for those attacks.

There is an obvious tell for the one counter you need to proceed, he basically taunts you. Then you need to just get close and counter.

lmao jesus wept I didn’t realise you could shoot during the counter sequences since I never had to in any boss fight until now. I was hitting the QTE spark to initiate the counter sequence but thought that was that. This is my least favourite part of combat in this game, by the way, countering in regular combat feels great but in boss fights my brain just gets lost because I’m trying to figure out if this is a cutscene, a sequence where I’m supposed to shoot, or if I’m looking out for more QTE button presses. There’s been at least one boss fight where I wasn’t sure if it was over or if the post-fight cutscene was interactive. Not a fan.

Finished the game. Final boss and ending sequence were insanity... Although, after reading the comments here I was expecting to get stuck at final boss for longer, it took just 3 tries for me.

NOW I CAN FINALLY READ ALL THE SPOILERS.

The biggest tell for whether you're in gameplay or a real cutscene is the framerate. Non-interactive cutscenes are 30fps.

I am really bad at noticing stuff like that, but also e.g. the recurring mini boss fights that end with a counter sequence require the two button inputs following the ‘spark’ prompt, which I was following here but truly didn’t realise I could do anything else during those sequences. I thought they were just there to regain item drops before returning to the fight.

Anyway, still getting my ass kicked so on we go…once my controller is charged, because I am not having it die during this fight.

The final boss is demanding and will punish mistakes hard but it also telegraphs pretty much all its attacks and there is a way to dodge or deal with everything it throws at you. When you get that down and dance around its attacks, it is immensely satisfying.

Yeah, the first phase feels quite easy now. The second phase…well. Well! Next question!

In general I think this has some of, if not the best boss fights in the series.
