No one here pointed this out, but someone on ERA pointed out that Kit and Krysta straight up say Nintendo specifically does not want to be associated at all with Summer Game Fest and has their “reasons” for not doing so. Which I guess makes the late June window make sense.

At 12:08 (I don’t know how to timestamp lol)

But why? I don't get it.

I saw this, but I didn’t post it lol. I guess I should’ve said something.

Only thing I could possibly think of is that SGF is positioning itself as a competitor to E3 and Nintendo wants to back the ESA

But hell, they had ad space during SGF so who knows lol
And Nintendo doesn’t have a long standing relationship with Geoff. They have one with ESA that goes decades back. They’re hand in hand with each other. The only reason they even did anything with Geoff for Game Awards was because of Reggie. Nintendo themselves see no reason to work with him on a larger scale.

Geoff wants the gaming industry to become the movie industry where only big blockbusters can regularly thrive, Nintendo does not.

Seems to be a pretty clear philosophical divide between the two parties.

That wouldn't explain the Game Awards absences either. It's just weird.
It’s really not. I just don’t think Nintendo sees anything beneficial from either the SGF or VGA. I would also imagine he doesn’t have the connections to things like retailers which Nintendo uses E3 for. There are probably other backroom deals. But even when Reggie was there it was very hit or miss.

Oh wow Gamexplain confirmed they heard the same too!

Now I really am thinking that IGN knew that too, lol. They all kind of said "-yeah, we think there'll be a Direct in June, but it's not the week of the 15th" on NVC, plus Kat even offhandedly saying the 'last week'. Makes me think that a lot of people in and around gaming kind of knew about this one well in advance. Not sure how that differs from usual, maybe if there is a Treehouse planned then there's more info out there sooner than usual?

I really don’t know why a good chunk of people think there is some weird falling out between Geoff and Nintendo. They didn’t even skip the last Game Awards since they had Monster Hunter there (confirmed to be NOA’s thing by TGA’s or Nintendo’s Twitter, I forget which, but must have been TGA’s since NOA was tagged). The Sephiroth year, which some say was forever ago, was only the year prior. Nintendo brings one thing they think makes sense for Geoff’s show. It may not be your thing, but they bring a good fit that plays to the TGA crowd. Skipping Summer Game Fest is probably only since they have a show right next to it so why bother.

That’s the mystery I want to solve. Multiple people in the media now have known the direct date. I wonder what tipped them off. They know of some game? Is there a huge embargo on June 29?

Nintendo is inviting the press to play a bunch of their games but they're not allowed to directly film at the Breath of the Wild 2 game stations. Your best best is getting blurry, over the should shots during interviews. Going for that Sonic Frontiers marketing approach.

Unless it's for something more out there like new hardware, then the only thing I can think of that'd be embargoed for a date like that would be... I don't even know. Xenoblade 3 previews? One month before launch? Maybe Silksong?

Geoff is only interested in the big titles and surprises from the big players. He dedicated such a long runtime for a remake of the Last of Us.

He can say he isn’t. But his shows and whatnot have been very clear that he does not actually care for a lot of the stuff he shows off. Plus he’s into Hollywood for video games. His first comment about his own award was that is “slightly heavy then a Oscar”. Inviting actors to announce awards, ending on Fast and Furious. Green Day concert. This is all stuff Nintendo doesn’t fit in and Geoff clearly just wants very very select few iPs from Nintendo, which he’s never gonna get exception being Smash trailers.

So in a way. It’s probably different views simple at that. Don’t think any bad blood,

Preview of Xenoblade 3 could be one. Hardware is a huge one for sure. Maybe the media will get to play some new games prior to the direct for articles?

Not super surprising, but it does seem like it's more people than usual. But it could just be a leakier than usual game is being shown off (probably Mario + Rabbids 2, given that Ubisoft is probably the leakiest studio in the industry)

My curiosity is the confusion/uncertainty of the whole timezone situation aka the 28th vs the 29th. Interesting that Nate seems to believe the possibility of it being on Tuesday the 28th while everyone seems to claim the 29th. I wonder if Nate thinks it could actually be the 28th (in the west) because the source could have acquired the Japanese direct info or is he just being cautious as usual?

Both his productions need a lot of polish & work in terms of pace, fat, & general structure.

My pushback on new hardware is Nate said he’s still looking for some specific answer to a question. I feel like if new hardware was about to be announced he would already have his answers.

I imagine a lot of other gaming press knew about previous Nintendo Directs but just didn't bother talking about them. If you're a big website, you don't want to get yourselves blacklisted because you were the first to leak out the dates.

Plus E3 was cancelled this year so a lot of things had to be rescheduled. With that amount of date shifting, surely the info about the new Direct date would make it way through the grapevine.

He’ll get there I feel once he’s making enough for that. He’s been rushing at this for fast tracking without really adjusting. Its a huge ordeal doing all this.

His Game Award show is looking like a loss cause for any format of actual pacing tho. With the awards and what he actually wants to do, it’ll never be a good “paced” show

They probably don't want to do SGF because they want all eyes on them for when gaming news is coming at that time. They don't have to time it with E3 now so it makes sense.

They done announcements at The Game Awards, even post Reggie. This doesn't mean there's some weird beef going on between SGF and Nintendo. People just gotta dog on Geoff whenever the get the chance.

I’m sure their is some back room marketing reason they never will let out. It is weird because as it’s looking, Keighley is the winning horse to latch your saddle too, but who knows.
heavily disagree, while e3 has not been great for a long time, i think most people would choose it over game frest

Considering that both shows have almost the same problems it doesn’t look like he’s going to get there. I guess we’ll see but I am not hopeful he will turn the SGF around any better then the VGA.

Speaking of which it’s the most bizarre thing as the show has the most sluggish frenetic pace I’ve ever seen.

Except they were saying the direct may be delayed after Nate said it wasn't next week. I'm sure Grub not being sure there's a direct coming also played a role in that too.
According to the tweet, it’s been the 28th for many weeks. That “leaker” wrote their insider info was still valid in late May, so when they confirmed a June 15th Direct a few days ago (just after the reddit leak), it must have been because their late May insider info said it was June 15th. However, we now know that even in late May, June 15th was not the date of the Direct. This 28th Direct is not due to a delay, it’s been the 28th even before late May. It’s not a mistake on their insiders’ end because the Direct was never delayed, nor was it ever on the 15th. Reasonably, either that “leaker” was given fake info, or they don’t have an insider.

And you’re not an insider, just informed, if you follow Grubb and Nate.

You probably saw it since this post but an ex gaming journalist casually dropped the direct date on a stream and Nate has confirmed it's true. The 29th but Nate said it might be the 28th he just knows it's one of those two. Might be timezone shenanigans.

with investor meeting at 29th 10am JST I would rule out 29th American time.

usual time for E3 direct in Japan is 1am. if direct happens at 28th NA time that would be 29th at 1am in Japan. just in time before they met investors.

Haha thanks! I actually read up on the news already when I made that post, and was kind of giving a cheeky response. But I understand that tone is impossible to read over the Internet, so I appreciate your explanation anyway. :)
