I mean I assume Switch will get it on the same day, it'll just also be day 1 on GP

Yeah absolutely. I don’t see this being exclusive to any platform, just day one Game Pass. Switch audience for the game is probably massive

Edit: shouldn’t say absolutely. Microsoft is probably looking for ways to make the end of this year more appealing, and timed exclusives on game pass is a big one

We got recently the revival of Tony Hawk and in the future Skate, and well, skating isn't as popular as it was 20 years ago so well, who knows. Though this is more a dream than something I fully expect in the near future.

It's because you don't need a giant plastic skateboard to stand on in the living room that you have to keep im your closet

I don't really care when or where Silksong makes another appearance, just that it happens. I'd definitely welcome it at the Microsoft show! That show at least has a date :p.

I am once again asking for a Silksong shadowdrop despite there being two games I'm interested in coming out at the end of the month

At least Silksong will conclusively decide which game I'm going to get this month

Alright so yesterday when vibes were low I had an idea to lift things up in in here...

Quote reply to this message with your favorite memory of a Direct Announcement. Be specific: where were you when you were watching, how many tears did you shed, what were your Direct snacks?

I’ll randomly pick one of the (valid) replies tomorrow (Saturday) morning and gift them an eshop game of their choosing, $20 max! (or I suppose credit if a code isn't possible) Include the game you’d be hoping to grab with it in your reply to give the devs some love :)
I'll have to share my second favorite Direct memory since my first one is identifying lol. It is still my #1 Direct Announcement however so hopefully it still qualifies! I was in college when the legendary January 2013 Nintendo Direct aired. For watching it I must have been in my apartment watching at my desk on my laptop looking at the air time. That Direct revealed a ton of amazing games in a way we'll likely never see again including stuff like Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem which was such a fleeting tease it felt like they barely had decided to make it when they included it! The big one though for me was the very final game, known only then as X. I loved Xenoblade Chronicles to pieces and even participated in Operation Rainfall so to see their next game, still their most ambitious game to date, get the coveted "one more thing" top billing at the end was incredible. Everything there looked amazing. A huge gorgeous open alien world begging to be explored and giant transformable mechs. It was such an arresting concept that completely consumed me.

Watching it live was only half the memory. I was still super hyped the next day and when I went to anime club, which always happened in a big lecture hall (in this case one of my favorites), for sound test I suggested they play the Direct. We skipped through for just the trailers and seeing the Xenoblade X trailer, something that was already so deeply personal to me, on a giant lecture hall projection screen with a good sound system with friends was extra awesome!

Mainly wanted to share the memory, but if I won the contest I'd put credit the toward Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredders Revenge next week. I loved Scott Pilgrim Vs The World also by Tribute Games and would love to play TMNT sooner than later!

unless you're a weirdo Silksong launching on Xbox and Game Pass Day 1 shouldn't bother anyone here

more options and a wider audience for people to play it can only be a good thing

I really wish I got into hollow knight :/

Would love if Silksong was more tightly paced but I feel like it’ll be bigger if anything

I burned out at about hour 15, and besides pacing issues, a big part of that was tiring of the combat and difficulty. I was enamored with the game until suddenly I wanted nothing to do with it.

No I will not be taking any questions

I get that, but at the same time I feel like one of the biggest selling points for a lot of Hollow Knight fans is that it's NOT tightly-paced, and really moves slowly and lets you just bathe in the atmosphere. It's more about the exploration. It's just a different style from a tight-paced more action-y metroidvania like Dread.

I guess what I'm saying is, I don't expect it to be much different on that front, since that would be a pretty jarring change from the first game.

I'm really enjoying reading everyone's replies and memories! Thanks for this generous giveaway totofogo and great topic of conversation.

The Nintendo Direct that immediately comes to mind for me is the E3 2014 presentation. I had just gotten super back into gaming the previous year, including purchasing a Wii U and playing a lot more 3DS than I had been. This included venturing deeper into the backwards compatibility libraries for both systems. That led me to playing Kirby Canvas Curse which is a really under-appreciated DS hidden gem. I used to see people chat about it all the time online but as a function of gaming discourse mostly being about the present and the recent past, there's a lot less talk about Wii and DS games now in general. So things that were semi-hidden gems have now become all the more tucked away. (And btw @MP! I'm right there with you as a huge fan of the January 2014 Direct! That was one of the things that got me back into gaming...the idea of what the new Zelda could be...the promise of HD Wind Waker and Yarn Yoshi...super exciting!)

Anyway, I really enjoyed that game and never expected to see a sequel for it. This was a period where I was playing a ton of Kirby games on DS, too, including Squeak Squad and Mass Attack, so you could say I was undergoing a major resurgence in a Kirby fandom that goes back to my childhood. One of my first games as a child was Kirby's Dream Land. The Animal Kirby plush and a little Waddle Dee gacha with a Maxim Tomato sit proudly in our home. So when E3 2014 Direct showed off Kirby and the Rainbow Curse I was beyond amazed and elated. I really never anticipated that would get its own game. The end product was a bit surprisingly slower-paced but to me it was much better than the reviews suggested (2D platformers in general were under-appreciated by reviewers in that era). The animation and music were absolutely incredible, one of the peaks of gaming presentation for me. So just seeing that when originally announced was a huge grin-inducing surprise.

And then the re-reveal of Yoshi's Woolly World after over a year plus of no word, with the game looking better than ever. This was really the Direct of fun, lighthearted colorful games for me, the kind I especially love. I was seriously gleeful to see the section in the next year's Direct about how Nintendo came up with the IRL yarn Yoshis to help think about how to develop the game. And then Yarn Yoshi and Poochy, the amiibo, became the true realization of that gaming concept back into reality. More than almost any other amiibo those Yoshi ones have a special place in my heart and soul, with so many fond memories of cute pictures taken with one of our kitties snuggling up with them. Anyway, this first in-depth look at the game was very exciting for me. I hope more people get to play YWW one day. I imagine a Switch port will happen one day down the line. It's so adorable and charming and thoughtfully-designed. Like @MisterSpo I'm eager to see what Good-Feel cooks up next (as I type this baking some gluten free waffles with minor end of week kitchen disaster on my hands 😆). I'm personally hoping for an Epic Yarn 2 or something brand new, but whatever they make I can't wait to see it.

The hits didn't stop there, though. Equally exciting and surprising to me was the reveal that the wished-for Captain Toad (aka El Capitan Todd, thank you @Aostia82 for one of my favorite memes there!) was really happening. Ever since 3DW came out 8 months prior, fans had been clamoring for a spin-off but I think we mostly believed it wouldn't happen. Nintendo leaks were much, much rarer prior to 2015, and usually fan hopes for dream projects, especially spin-offs, would remain just that. I could instantly see that Captain Toad was everything I hoped for and more.

Unfortunately, when it released I found out the way the camera and zoom worked in the game caused me motion sickness. That was super disappointing. I eventually found a way to play it on the GamePad that didn't bother me, but it was still not exactly how I hoped. I finally got a large enough TV in 2019 that solved the problem of no "midzoom" option in the game. Part of the reason I hadn't been able to play it on the TV was that the zoomed out option was too zoomed out and would give me a bit of nausea to spin the camera, whereas the zoomed in angle was too zoomed in to see enough of the level. The Switch port added the midzoom option but also added a blue dot cursor that I found a bit less enjoyable than the GamePad implementation on Wii U. So for me, one of the first things I thought of when getting a bigger TV was that I'd be able to play Captain Toad, and I went back and replayed it to get all the gems. And it was an even more wonderful experience. The storybook page level select retains the date of when you originally played the level, too, so it was very nostalgic to reminisce about when I'd originally played the levels. I still have more to do in the game, too, and am looking forward to revisiting it one day soon. You can see the hype from this game is still sustaining me 7 years later!

This wasn't even all, though! A lot of recent Nintendo Directs have focused on games and franchises that aren't of interest to me personally, but this specific Direct made me feel like what a lot of the recent ones have felt like to all of you who watch a Direct and get hyped for several things in there. On top of all the games I already mentioned, we got the first look at a character with a blue tunic reminiscent of the Hero of the Winds... I honestly couldn't even quite fathom what the game would be like. Just the scope of the tiny sliver of world they showed filled my imagination with possibilities. At the time it was exciting, but I really didn't know what to expect from the finished game. So the other games I mentioned hyped me considerably more since they were fully-formed. But it's definitely too important a reveal not to mention. I really would like to rewatch this whole Direct sometime.

What did I eat at the time? I think around this time I was really into Enjoy Life brand cookies, they make this soft, chewy double chocolate cookie that's super addictive. So I imagine it was a few of those and perhaps some delectable pretzel crisps.

Thanks again for the opportunity, totofogo! If I win, I'll finally go for Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon on Switch. I've been really wanting to check it out and see if I can push through the high learning curve. I love a good puzzler and the last two SK expansions are two of my favorite recent indies.

Looking forward to reading more memories, all!

There have been some great directs over the years. But the one moment that made me pop off the hardest was seeing Mega Man in Smash 4. My mom literally came into my room while I was watching because I made so much noise.

Grubb talked about the Direct just now, saying that the reason that it hasn't been announced could be because it's a Direct Mini, which would align with stuff he has heard (but hasn't been able to confirm)

Assuming Silksong is coming to Game Pass and it's released at the same time as the Switch version, here's how it's going to go, it's gonna still sell a fuckton of copies on the Switch and it will be a main stay on the top 10 best sellers list on the eShop for many months to come. Silksong is cheap enough that people will just want to own the game on the same system(s) that they own Hollow Knight on. Plus, the portability of the Switch is something people will be willing to pay for.

And despite it's popularity, it will probably not having a meaningful impact on Game Pass subs. While definitely a nice game to have in the library, the main appeal of that service is getting the expensive AAA games for cheaper than what you would pay to individually buy them. I don't think people are going to be suddenly convinced to sub just because Silksong is released on the service.

This assumes of course that it's not a timed Xbox exclusive.

I would personally say that Hollow Knight is pretty tightly paced, there just happens to be a lot of it. Plus backtracking does slow it down a bit. But as far as game design and structure goes there isn't really much bloat to it, it's just a really big game. Obviously just the size of the game is going to be a turn off for a lot of Metroidvanias who prefer tighter experiences though

I trust Nate over Grubb here
I feel like Nate has historically messed up Minis and Generals, so I'm not sure if he would know what kind of Direct an upcoming Direct would be. But maybe that was just the one time with the first Partner Showcase?

I wouldn't be upset about a Mini Direct tbh. They're pretty enjoyable. However, between Neon White and TMNT at SGF and Silksong supposedly showing up at Microsoft's event on Sunday, I think the lack of info is due to the Direct still being weeks away. Otherwise those games would be in the Direct.

Seeing that thumbnail makes me want a beef and cheddar, but an arbys not too far away from me had the manager urinating in the shake mix. Have to cross them all off the list of places I would visit.

Nate has messed this up once before. Because someone may know a game or two and use those games to assume it’s a general direct, but they might be small enough for a Mini Direct.

@NateDrake are you really confident in what you know would constitue a general direct or were you told it’s a general direct?

Clipped the specific part.

I think everyone should actually watch this clip before people freak out. Grubb is specifically asked about a Direct "leak" for Wednesday and he goes on to say that he hasn't heard anything about it and then guesses that it's a Mini Direct...or a Partner Direct...or a bunch of Twitter announcements. Basically he has only heard that it's a bunch of mini announcements and he doesn't know it what format any of this will come.

This. Grubb puts out a lot of content, talks on streams, etc. Folks like to pull his quotes out of context. When he makes a prediction, it’s more intentional.

Nah should get Goemon’s Great Adventure for the insanity of its 4 player coop online

What would a Mini Direct even look like right now? Maybe Xenoblade, Live a Live, Splatoon 3 playtest and Direct announcement, Mario Kart DLC, and a Mario + Rabbids re-reveal and release date, along with the usual third party stuff?

A mini in June 2022 would be exceptionally shit. Sounds like a great way to tank a bit of that coveted ‘momentum’ - guess it really depends on what they show.

Most of that should be Twitter and YouTube drops since it’s mostly known quantities and has had lots of marketing already.
