Did most of the prologue and this is very enjoyable so far. The gameplay/combat sections were my biggest concern and they're surprisingly fun and snappy so far too.

My copy shipped on the 8th and it hasnt shown just yet. Starting to get a bit worried I wont get it before the holidays hmmm

hope everyone playing for the first time enjoys 🙏 this game was incredible

also... would anyone happen to have a high res shot of the Ryoko art card of her with the flower crown? it's gorgeous and I want a clean image of it lol

Gonna go grab my Switch copy at Best Buy after lunch today. I have no choice but to double-dip on this one-of-a-kind work from Vanillaware. It won't be the same as the first playthrough in 2020, but I think the two-year span has given me enough distance to see if again with somewhat fresh eyes. Plus, playing it in handheld on my SwOLED is gonna be heavenly.

Wow, absolutely love the ST @Irene , if I could give the star topic badge a second time I would!

This game is so pretty in handheld. Only played for an hour so far and I am already intrigued.

Been spending most of today in Destruction and I'm managing Intense pretty well. I notice how much better it goes when you don't over-rely on 1st generation Sentinels when tackling big enemies. Previously I just went in with Sekigahara and expected him to handle them with Demolisher Blade on his own. But now both Takamiya and Gouto have close-range attacks equipped and is accompanying him as backup, taking down the big lads much quicker. I unlocked Takamiya's Switch-exclusive skill too, a powered-up Leg Spike, and it's awesome!

About 30% into Remembrance as well, currently playing Miura's story. His English VA is excellent, and I think he really does Miura's emotional scenes so good.

Awh, this is a very kind thing to say!

Completed the prologue. Not only am I already hooked on the story, but the RTS segments are also much more enjoyable than I expected!

I played throgh the first two prologues and already love the game. It looks gorgeous, has really good English VA and the story and characers hook you right from the start!

Alright so I’m only an hour and a half or so in and there’s already a lot happening.

Okay, so I did pick up the game after all, and I just got through the prologue (I think?) and stopped right after unlocking the menus for Remembrance, Destruction, and Analysis. (Cue the indecision paralysis…)

There’s a bit more color than it seemed to me in the screenshots and trailers, and the animations are really nice, but so far it’s not quite an aesthetic that I really love… I’m intrigued about the story, but it’s certainly not gripped me yet like the Famicom Detective Club games did, and I’m not caring too much for the Destruction gameplay… Really hoping I end up liking this more in the end. I put my trust in all the praise I see this game getting, so hopefully that holds true for my tastes as well.

Nearly finished the prologue and holy moly I am already hooked; the way the story gradually introduces each piece of the puzzle then teases at how they connect is just so artfully done, so that each little nugget of new information feels satisfying while also leaving me wanting more. It's like a good book that's really hard to put down.

I also adore that it's such a love letter to all things nerdy, from quoting the original War of the Worlds, to more subtle bits like describing a rail gun as having "the power of a 460mm battleship gun" which is the caliber of the legendary battleship Yamato's main battery.

I've never been into either visual novels or strategy games, yet this somehow finds a way to make both thoroughly enjoyable to me.
Can't wait to play more!

Is there an ideal way on how to balance destruction/remembrance or does it not really matter? I've been mostly doing remembrance for now but I'm not sure if that's a mistake.

It's completely up to you how you want to pace your playthrough. I usually treat Destruction as a way to sort of break when I start to get fatigued from too much reading/dialogue. Like, I play through 1 or 1.5 hours of Remembrance, then break it up with a few battles.

It's worth to keep in mind, though, that after a while, Destruction locks you out of progress until you've reached a certain point in Remembrance. (For story reasons) So if you binge Destruction and don't play Remembrance too much, you might end up in a situation where you "have" to binge an equal amount of Remembrance, which can feel like it robs a bit of agency from you.

Anyone have any recommendations as to which character(s) I should start with in Remembrance? I’m kinda overwhelmed by the options here…

Nope. That's the beauty of 13 Sentinels. Your journey through the story won't be exactly the same as someone else's. Just go with whomever you feel like, and feel free to bounce between them as you go.

That's my only real recommendation, really. Don't just stick with one character for too long. Mix it up.

I'm really struggling to piece all the fragmented stories together, which is great. Every single adventure story adds something to the mystery and ties it together, but the twists are always very interesting. The narrative itself so far it's really the star of the show. I think I will do a few battles because I played 2.5 continuos adventure as soon as I finished the prologue and I want to mix it up.

Some stuff that was I liked so far in terms of narrative and characters

Yuki and Natsuno
working with the MIB in the second Natsuno adventure part, that was shocking, and then of course playing Yuki's side of the story you see why and how she cares about Natsuno.

Yuki and Amiguchi
the bike scene reminded me a bit of Devilman Crybaby, it was very romantic. I like Yuki's gap moe, and I very much like seeing Yuki and Amiguchi being almost a couple in one of Ryoko's early stories. In neither Yuki or Amiguchi side of the story they reached that development yet so I'm curious to see when I'm going to see more

Ei
the dude is an IA apparently on the "bad side", but it's quite clear he has his own motivations, I'm curious to learn more

Megumi
she started tsundere and she's now quickly going full yandere, wishing to shoot Iori because she talked to Juro was too much lmao

In terms of actual timeline I'm really fascinated by one specific early game moment
Ei waking up next to Morimura's dead body in 1985, but in every other story in 1985 she seems to be alive doing her fishy business. I'm guessing either there are multiple diverging timelines or Ei did some very funny twisting jumping around in time.

These are the kind of posts I live for. Keep them coming!

Having beaten the game, it's fun to read newcomer impressions like these as a new crop of players tangle their minds into knots trying to piece together the story as they go.

One of my favorite twists in this game has a LONG payoff, which probably depends a little on what order you played the stories in, but the amount of time that the game lets pass between the relevant bits of it really make it sing.

I'll spoiler tag it here, but be warned I don't remember when exactly this is revealed, other than that it's fairly late in the game:

I love how one of the first stories you play through is some of Juro's plot, which often involves his classmate Shiba. Shiba is fairly involved early on, but then you don't really ever see him again for a long time. In my first playthrough, I thought he might be one of the 13 and he'd get a story later, but then I kind of forgot about him since he's introduced so early and disappears.

Cut to way later in the game when you get to see some of the scenes that Shiba was in from another character's perspective, and he's just... not there. And my brain very slowly realized this and had massive alarm bells that were like "Wait a minute what the hell?" just before the reveal of exactly WHY Shiba wasn't there. I'm not sure if this is the same reaction most people will have but for me the timing of it all was just perfect.

Yep. One of many jaw-dropping twists/revelations in that first playthrough for me as well.

The biggest WTF moment for me was probably when Natsuno asks BJ why the machines are invading earth, and BJ bluntly responds, "They are not... This is not Earth."

With the information that I had so far at that point in my playthrough, that one line just completely upended everything that I thought I had solidly figured out. I actually said out loud at my TV, "Excuuuuuuuuse me?!"

This isn’t helpful for my executive dysfunction at all… ._. lol

Okay, another question—does Destruction mode have story all throughout it, too? I’ve been playing the game with my partner watching, and I’m wondering if I could knock out some Destruction battles while they’re not around to watch, or if they should be there for those as well.

Also, do you think my opinion is likely to change much beyond the prologue if I’m not too into what I’ve played so far, or…?

The prologue is the slowest part of the game, so it's not the best predictor of how much you'll like the game as a whole. I went from being intrigued during the Prologue to obsessed with the game after it when everything opens up.

As for battles, they technically tell part of the story but all your partner will miss out on is some fun character interactions if they're not around to watch all of the battles. They definitely wouldn't want to miss any of the Remembrance chapters if they're trying to follow along with the story though. They're all important.

Ah geeze. On a straight eyeball percentage, how much is the super sweet looking op going to spoil me if I read it?

It won't spoil much, but if you're going to play it soon then it's best just to go in completely blind IMO.

I've been doing the awkward dance of trying to glean information on some aspects of the game, but not others for a while now lol.

I've already committed to purchase based off the info I have, so I think I'm going to take your advice and come back to the op after, thanks.

Is this 1080p docked?
Seems like it. Image quality is super sharp.

Also 57% done with Megumi Yakushiji's scenario. Really good stuff.

Even if people aren't interested in the "visual novel" (it's actually rather more like a "point-and-click adventure game") aspect, I'd urge them to check it out. Having a solid semi-RTS strategy game also helps. In my opinion, it's well worth the price of admission.

The game so far is like a combination of
Netflix's DARK with a smattering of Pacific Rim/Evangelion, and the oddball reference to Madoka Magica
.

Okay, so I did some post-prologue Remembrance today, but there’s something I’m kinda confused about. In the flowchart, some events are colored blue and some are colored orange. What’s the difference? I don’t believe the game told me, and it’s bugging me… Also, for the blank paths that don’t tell you what you need to do or which keyword you need to have to access them, are those just locked until you make progress elsewhere, or what? Not sure if I can actually make more progress right now on the current character I’ve been playing or not.

I'm now almost 50% into Remembrance. There's a lot of stuff I've missed previously that I now look at with new eyes and new perspectives, something I really hoped that I would do when I decided to double-dip.

For example: (Full story spoilers)

The Sentinels AI's and who they are and what their origin story is. I didn't catch during the first playthrough that Kisaragi and Miura also have backup data due to the explosion accident, and that is why Miura is BJ. (I think)

I still have trouble with: (Full story spoilers)

Okino. Half of what he says is really helpful to understand the plot, but the other half of what he says is just technobabble.

This isn’t helpful for my executive dysfunction at all… ._. lol

I do personally think that the game is at its best when you decide for yourself, but if you're having issues deciding, I have a tip. Something I like to do is to start with a character, and then next, you play the character that shows up the most in the first character's story. For example, start with Character A, and since Character B shows up a lot in Character A's story, continue with Character B. Since Character C and Character B are classmates, continue with Character C and then maybe Character C meets Character D, then continue with Character D. It helps give the story a bit more coherency.

Ah geeze. On a straight eyeball percentage, how much is the super sweet looking op going to spoil me if I read it?

I really struggled with the character descriptions, I wanted them to be as vague as they could be, but still try to highlight what makes the characters intriguing.

If you want to go in completely blind, skip looking at character descriptions and I guess the Remembrance pictures too.

The flowchart is tricky to understand. I have trouble myself at times. I think the orange ones are the ones that require you to be at a certain place and talk to a certain person, and the blue ones are where you need keywords. The blank paths are just paths you can go to, just go to a place that you can go to and see if a new event triggers.

I can’t tell if this is actually helpful to me or not, lol, but I suppose I might give the game a shot…

Anyone know if there’s any missable content or other similar things to stress over while playing, though?
To be honest based on everything you said I would actually say you probably won't like it, so take that as you will lol

EDIT: Sounds like you already bought it, hope you enjoy it then

Question for those who've played the game. :)

I just started the post-prologue part of the game; with the branching story paths in Remembrance, do we play out all the alternative routes eventually, or is it more a matter of there being one "correct" path that leads to that character's end point, and the rest are optional dead ends?

Thanks in advance, really enjoying the game so far!

There are some VERY few dead ends, like in one character’s story, you have the option to go home, and you get an ending called “daily life”, which doesn’t advance the plot. But don’t worry about it, you’ll get through all of the branching paths. Nothing in the game is missable.

Okay so will next chapter will be playing through a different path, and you play out each possible route one after the other?
Or do I have to keep going back and replaying previous chapters to see everything?
I'm just confused about the game's structure.

I'm just confused about the game's structure.

I’ll try to explain as best as I can, I’m not the best explainer so bear with me. Sometimes, a new chapter just begins a new path and you don’t have to worry about the flowchart at all, but often, a new chapter will have you begin in the same spot as before, but with the keywords you obtained in the previous chapter, which can be used to unlock the next path. For example, a character might begin in the classroom, a part in the flowchart with, say, 3 branches, going out will trigger the first path and that chapter will play out. However, you will gain new keywords and when you begin the next chapter, you are in the classroom again, but will have to think where to use the new keyword in order to progress.

Sometimes, you might, say, go outside the classroom on the third chapter instead of the first, and yes, then you run the possibility of repeating a chapter, but that happens rarely. I do think the flowchart is pretty oddly structured, but it will make sense the more you play the game.

If you happen to run into a repeated chapter, just move to a checkpoint.

Glad you’re enjoying it anyway!

Based on everything you've said, I think you'll love 13 Sentinels. That's all I'll say since otherwise it's best to go in blind.

Oh. Okay. .-. lol Maybe I should have waited for more opinions before buying it… I mean, I’m not hating it, but I’m not really loving it so far either. I kinda took the initial response I got as an indication that the game must change up significantly later on or something, since I voiced a lot of concerns in my first post but then got that reply saying “based on everything you’ve said, I think you’ll love 13 Sentinels”, but of course I can’t get further context without big spoilers apparently, so I took a risk and assumed that might be the case. Ah well. Maybe I’ll still end up enjoying it more as I play through it more.

Can not pull myself away from Remembrance, it's so gripping. Will play some Destruction later today, though. I really like how much freedom the game gives you to tackle things at leisure.

Trying to balance those two will probably be tricky for me.

I'd say it's good to do a Destruction battle or two after every 3-4 chapters of Remembrance. This is the approach I took when I first played the game back in 2020, and it gave me a really balanced progression where I was never gated off from one more or the other due to lack of progress in one particular area.

Also, the story progresses in Destruction mode too. Pay attention to the pre- and post-battle banter to get a sense of when/why the battles are taking place. Remembrance and Destruction modes are both intertwined from a storytelling standpoint.

I am very excited to play this game, but no one knows where my package is, so instead I will press buttons on my dead switch pro controller and pretend I am playing it

I am knee deep in this game...

I wouldn't have expected myself to feel this invested but holy hell.

It's like the video game equivalent of Netflix's DARK.

Damn. I should probably check out DARK then, because I worship the ground 13 Sentinels walks on.

Can confirm now that Destruction is almost equally as addictive as Remembrance. Making steady progress with 39% completion in both modes after ~15 hours.

I'm liking it even more this time around on Switch because of the quick nature of the battles in handheld mode. It just feels right.

I think I'm about 90% in Destruction, so I'm keeping a good pace. Turns out sticking with 6 characters and levelling them up and resetting BO was a good decision, even though sometimes I get defeated a few rounds. I can really feel the Sentry Gun nerf though, they're not useless, but the heavy lifting this time is done with Takamiya and Gouto and their Leg Spikes.

Also 85% in Remembrance now and I just.. love these characters so much. For such a "plot-centric" game as 13 Sentinels, where most of the conversation is dominated by plot direction, events, themes, revelations, sick lore bombs and crazy twists, the game still manages to make the characters feel like a significant part of the story - in a lot of other plot-centric games, such as MGS, it feels like characters play second fiddle. Sure, the characters in 13 Sentinels might not be the most three-dimensional characters out there, and they don't have that much development, (they have fantastic arcs - but I think character arcs and character development are two different things) but they're very well-written characters nonetheless. I think Natsuno Minami is so wholesome, Miura and Hijiyama are endearing, Juro Kurabe is hard to not like, Shinonome is intriguing and compelling, Kisaragi has some really funny lines, and I can't stress enough how great I think the localisation is.
