Reviews Kirby and the Forgotten Land | Review Thread

Glad to see Kirby scoring great. Hopefully this gives Nintendo the confidence to finally bring other 2D stalwarts like DK and Yoshi into 3D in the future.

Excited to finally play this man few days.

What a thread wow, basically 3 pages of 2 people arguing about reviewer bias lol.

Anyway, I'm glad this is reviewing well. I've never fully understood why people criticize Kirby for being easy. As some other poster said, what matters more if they're engaging and, IMO, just how fun the power-ups are make the games super engaging right away. There's also always the Arena mode for difficulty... it's usually quite hard to clear.

I think that's a valid criticism, but we shouldn't make excuses for reviews that don't elaborate on why "easy = bad". If a reviewer implies that a game is lesser because of its difficulty, then we should take this as a stupid and shallow criticism instead of going full History Channel with stuff like "actually they were referring to this part in the third level..." . Let's not forget that these people get paid for writing these reviews and they should be criticized when their product is unprofessional.
I appreciate this comment, but in the interest of moving the thread forward I'll just say we can end the discussion here. Interesting topic though, I think there's a lot that can be said on it!

I can't tell if you're saying Celeste is undeserving or if it's surprisingly high for a niche game

Celeste is one of the best games of the generation and I’m rarely interested in 2D games than aren’t just RPGs.

I don’t even know what’s going on here.

To be on topic with Kirby...yeah, those are the exact scores I expected. Looking forward to the release! Though interesting note...

The highest rated Kirby games are Canvas Curse and Epic Yarn...both nontraditional Kirby games, which is still pretty wild to me. Will a future standard Kirby game ever break the 86 barrier?

Not that it matters, but how likely is it that this gets a slight bump to 86? Sometimes games get small bumps up or down (though it's usually down) over the course of the following days after embargo is over.

Just wait for the open world Kirby.

Kirby / 100

Really looking forward to this!
The only real answer!

Tell me, is there ever such a thing as a bad Kirby game?

No, really...Even the most disappointing of Kirby gamea still happen to still be solid! Star Allies had a great many modes. Epic Yarn was actually pretty good if you were trying to get Gold in each level. Squeak Squad?...

Okay, I haven't played Squeak Squad, but my point is there hasn't really been a truly bad entry in the series.

Can vouch for Squeak Squad being pretty good.

I'm also going to say that every "bad" Kirby game also has its following: Kirby Air Ride is still highly regarded as one of the more beloved entries. It's just a shame it came out at the same timeas F-Zero GX.

Kirby Tilt N' Tumble? Does anybody have a copy of that game? Because I still love it to death, and one of the main reasons I still keep my OG Platinum GBA.

I've written thoughts and deleted them out of fear they sound too "gamer-y" but I get consistently frustrated with what is considered "greatness" in games. Often the 'feelings' people take seriously in the greatest games are feelings of sadness in these downtrodden worlds with somber characters. (I maintain that The Last Of Us Part 2 is a miserable experience). It definitely doesn't happen as often as it used to, but it's like critics forget that joy is just as valid of an emotion.
It's easier to get an emotional response out of the typical reviewer demographic with those themes than something more lighthearted. Film has also been on a grimdark kick for the past decade or so, which makes some people feel that games with a similar vibe are more deserving of praise.

Like you said, it typically goes down, so I have my doubts unless we got some really glowing reviews coming up.

Ah, yes. The series needs to be more "ambitious" to get there.

I don't think that Kirby Battle Royale has many fans. It kinda just...came and went. No vocal defenders like Air Ride (which has its flaws but also has the excellent City Trial going for it).

i'll defend battle royale as one of the experimental incremental steps that would, alongside blowout blast, eventually lead us to forgotten land

but it should not have been sold at full retail price

But...was it Other M levels of bad?
apples to oranges comparison.

battle royale had a severe dearth of content, absurd difficulty spikes in the solo campaign, really weird controls and no meaningful progression or reasons to keep playing
other m swung in the total opposite direction. there was a lot to do and it sure tried to keep you playing, but it was just bad at everything it did and constantly looking for ways to subvert your already low expectations.

they're both bad, just in different ways

Squeak Squad is the Super Mario 3D Land of the Kirby series, it's incredibly vanilla and incredibly forgettable.

Honestly, I think that's unfair to 3D Land. Squeak Squad straight up sucks

You know a Kirby game is bad when they didn't even TRY to make the final boss nightmarish or anything. Compared to modern Kirby, it's comes off especially poorly

Squeak Squad isn't exactly the best Kirby game, but it is the best one on GBA/DS. So many great copy abilities that never returned.

Original Kirby boss was a goofy penguin with a Santa hat.

????????

Are you forgetting Super Star Ultra exists? That runs circles around Squeak Squad, easily. It's basically the start of modern Kirby, introducing The True Arena and Galacta Knight

I'd say Amazing Mirror is better too tbh

Yeah I have some Kirby hot takes as well tbh lol. I like Dreamland 3 more then super star (great game tho). Kirby 64 is the best traditional Kirby game. Also, I just finished playing Kirby mass attack recently and that game is definitely the best Kirby game on DS. Fight me lol.

Super Star is my favorite Kirby. Always wanted to play the DS version, but I unfortunately never got around to it.

Can you please fucking stop with the condescending bullshit? This is not making you look smart.
One of those users "frog" accused me of coming up with "how deep is the rot" which is patently false.

The fact that I'm being constantly condescended to with blatant falsehoods that you didn't even bother to investigate and you refuse to call it out and instead attack me, shows me what kind of forum you're running here.

Good luck with this place man. Seriously.

I have been on the Internet long enough to see Super Star slandered. It is time to retire, fellas!

(Crystal Shards is not good)

I can’t wait for this! Love everything I am seeing from reviews.

Nah, Super Star Ultra is awesome. Packed to the gills with content building off of one of the best Kirby games (Super Star). I’m pretty sure your opinion is indeed pretty controversial.

Super Star Ultra does have inferior music & sound quality and more limited co-op support... That's about it though. Otherwise KSSU is the superior version in basically every respect (though you can certainly make an argument in favour of the original SNES game's look & feel; especially comparing the CG cutscene FMVs to the original 2D cutscenes).

KSSU is the GOAT Kirby game by far, but if this can crack the top 3 alongside Robobot that would certainly be a triumph. Gonna wait and start playing this Friday night after work probably so I can really sink my teeth into it.

no idea what their operation looks like these days, and this isn't necessarily a problem, but is this their third perfect score this month?
They said that the score was a lower end of 5/5.

BTW, another interesting thing in the video was the claim that it would easily be the best-selling Kirby of all time.

Their scoring system is kind of silly tbh, though I understand they implemented it for visibility (eg getting their names on MetaCritic)
