Been playing a lot of the DLC tonight with my gf, and while it's fun and great to have new tracks, it's pretty low effort, both in terms of graphics and music (while playing Coconut Mall, my gf even asked "the graphics looks old, do you think it's on purpose ?"). I'm a bit disappointed and hope they'll do a bit more in future tracks. Maybe they also should've released them 16 at a time rather than 8 at a time, it'd be more engaging

Graphics sure, but how is it low effort in music?

Instead of sorting my new predictions into cups, i'll just list them by origin game. Assuming the prefix datamining is legit and corosponds to most of the eventual tracks that will be included (filling in the seven blank spots with my own blind predictions):

SNES Mario Circuit 1 - in Tour; MC1 and RMX MC1 were spotted on the datamined banner (but i'd prefer MC4).
SNES Vanilla Lake 2 - in Tour, likely coming due to easter egg on Coconut Mall.

N64 Koopa Troopa Beach - in Tour, picking this over the SNES equivalent.
N64 Kalimari Desert - in Tour, iconic N64 track they won't pass on.
N64 Choco Mountain - part of Wave 1.
N64 Bowser's Castle - popular iteration of Bowser's Castle.

GBA Sky Garden - part of Wave 1.
GBA Cheep-Cheep Island - in Tour, could swap out for Luigi Circuit (datamined from Tour).
GBA Sunset Wilds - in Tour, spotted on datamined banner.
GBA Yoshi Desert - datamined from Tour.
GBA Bowser Castle 3 - likely datamined from Tour, more likely than BC4 and more interesting than BC1 or BC2.

GCN Daisy Cruiser - datamined from Tour, likely coming due to easter egg on Coconut Mall.
GCN Waluigi Stadium - spotted on datamined banner, previously datamined from Tour.
GCN Mushroom City - possibly datamined from Tour; this spot could go to Mushroom Bridge or DK Mountain instead.
GCN Dino Dino Jungle - in Tour, possibly spotted on datamined banner, likely coming due to easter egg on Coconut Mall.

DS Luigi's Mansion - in Tour, fan-favourite track.
DS Waluigi Pinball - in Tour, fan-favourite track.
DS Shroom Ridge - part of Wave 1.
DS Airship Fortress - in Tour, fan-favourite track.

Wii Mushroom Gorge - in Tour, fan-favourite track.
Wii Coconut Mall - part of Wave 1.
Wii DK Summit - spotted on datamined banner, in Tour.
Wii Koopa Cape - likely spotted on datamined banner, likely coming to Tour.
Wii Maple Treeway - spotted on datamined banner, in Tour.
Wii Dry Dry Ruins - datamined from Tour.

3DS Toad Circuit - part of Wave 1.
3DS Shy Guy Bazaar - in Tour, fan-favourite track.
3DS Wuhu Island Loop - datamined from Tour, personal pick.
3DS Alpine Pass - in Tour, could be swapped out for many other 3DS tracks (Wario Shipyard, Bowser's Castle, Rosalina's Ice World, etc)
3DS Rainbow Road - spotted on datamined banner, in Tour.

Tour New York Minute - spotted on datamined banner.
Tour Tokyo Blur - part of Wave 1.
Tour Paris Promenade - part of Wave 1.
Tour London Loop - spotted on datamined banner.
Tour Vancouver Velocity - spotted on datamined banner.
Tour Los Angeles Laps - spotted on datamined banner.
Tour Berlin Byways

Tour [Datamined City Track - Amsterdam]
Tour [Datamined City Track - Bangkok]
Tour [Datamined City Track - Athens]
Tour Merry Mountain
Tour Ninja Hideaway - part of Wave 1.
Tour [Datamined New Track - Sweets themed] - spotted on datamined banner.

Tour [Datamined New Track]

N64 Bowser's Castle is the only track i've included with zero presence in 8 Deluxe or Tour; Shroom Ridge had no indication of being in Tour until it was revealed for 8DX, so I don't think looking at tracks present in Tour will give you 100% of the picture. Could swap out for a different N64 track like DK Jungle Parkway or Banshee Boardwalk.

For allocating the 7 unkown spots, I gave three to Tour (to include every known datamined track from that game) and two each to N64 and 3DS since they currently have shockingly low numbers. Wouldn't be surprised if the final allocation ended up differently. If we don't get every single Tour track (just most) then i'd throw in GCN DK Mountain, DS Delfino Square or another 3DS track (there's so many of them in Tour, i'd be shocked if we got as little as three of them). Also a bit of a shame to leave out Wii Toad's Factory, but I think six is the max for Wii tracks, and Dry Dry Ruins is the more likely inclusion.

wait wait wait wait wait

So I don't have to suffer through the boredom of 50CC and 100CC if I want to "100%" the single player mode in this game? Are you for real right now?!

Yep, that's right lol

It doesn't work for mirror and 200cc, though, so at the very least you need to do 150cc, mirror and 200cc to clear everything.

This is a really reasonable set of tracks. I think Mushroom City in particular will be exciting, and the DS and Wii picks will be great in particular. Already have my favorite 3DS tracks in base MK8, so I'm still happy.

Though, uh, that's a really weird way to spell "Rock Rock Mountain." Not sure what's up with that. Might wanna spell check it.

Seriously now, why DID Mario Kart 7 have such a different localization in NA vs EU/AS?

Just finished 3 staring both new cups in 150/mirror/200, so time for impressions:

MK8 base game and first DLC had a combination of great track design, remarkable graphical detail, and amazing music that I feel some folks really took for granted. This booster course DLC is a bit of a step down in comparison (generally less graphically detailed, little to no real instrumental music, several tracks with pretty standard track design) but still a fun time.

Shroom Ridge and Ninja Hideaway are both excellent imo, while Toad Circuit and Sky Garden kinda meh (besides the music of course).

Regardless, I’m definitely glad we have new MK8 tracks to play on!

It will proably not happen, but I really want DS Rainbow Road in Mariokart 8. It has like the perfect oppertunity for adding anti-gravity.

I mostly agree. But music-wise the courses are up there with the base game for me.

For the “unknown” prefixes, wouldn’t they likely just be non-city Tour originals like Ninja Hideaway rather than unknown past stages that were for some reason not given a prefix yet? Especially since most of them are slotted as the last course in a cup, just like Ninja Hideaway. I imagine most will somewhat match the theme of the cup, too.

I would love to see more 3DS courses, though… But we’d still have a total of 7 3DS courses in the game, which would be about the average for the number of retro courses each past game gets if you total the datamined prefixes with the base game courses, plus some more of the retro courses in the Booster Course Pass will surely be based on the 3DS versions (well, based on the Tour versions which are based on the 3DS versions, lol), so it wouldn’t surprise me if we only got 3 3DS courses with the DLC. And N64 courses would only be fewer by one, too.

Also curious to know your reasoning for Dry Dry Desert being more likely than Toad’s Factory. I couldn’t decide on which would be more likely between those two and Mushroom Gorge, lol.

While I am an Expansion Pass subber anyway, the super fun Ninja Hideaway & Tokyo Blur alone are worth $5+ to me, so I am really looking forward to the next couple years of Mario Kart after playing with my wife for awhile today. I just wish they also expanded the character roster and this would be absolutely all I need from the Mario Kart franchise for a long time.

My take is this is not MK8D, it's easier to accept it's just a backdoor Switch port for Tour. 2 games in 1 package. That feeling will further increase if anti grav remains absent in the remaining waves.

I believe Ninja Hideaway not currently being marked as a Tour course in-game is a mistake since all of the marketing identifies it as one; but if it remains that way in the next patch then i'll conceede on this point.

I just can't imagine there being that many original courses down the pipeline for Tour looking at the current rate of original track releases:
  • 2019 introduced New York, Tokyo, Paris and London
  • 2020 introduced Vancouver, Los Angeles and Merry Mountain.
  • 2021 introduced Berlin, Ninja Hideaway and Sydney.
  • 2022 has so far only introduced Singapore.
There are varaints to consider of course; and while I can see them picking up the pace enough to get 7 more original tracks by the end of 2023 (four new tracks a year), adding another four on-top of that just feels impossible based on how the game has played out so far.

I would love to see more 3DS courses, though… But we’d still have a total of 7 3DS courses in the game, which would be about the average for the number of retro courses each past game gets if you total the datamined prefixes with the base game courses, plus some more of the retro courses in the Booster Course Pass will surely be based on the 3DS versions, so it wouldn’t surprise me if we only got 3 3DS courses with the DLC. I do think base game numbers are worth taking into consideration too, yeah. Combining the base game track counts with the datamined prefixes alone (not adding any) we'd have:
  • SNES - 4
  • N64 - 6
  • GBA - 8
  • GCN - 8
  • DS - 7
  • Wii - 9
  • 3DS - 7
Would just feel weird to see N64 and 3DS fall behind GBA and GCN in count, especially considering that Tour has every 3DS original track available for them to pick from. I think N64 also reaching 8 and 3DS tying Wii at 9 would feel more right.

Also curious to know your reasoning for Dry Dry Desert being more likely than Toad’s Factory. I couldn’t decide on which would be more likely between those two and Mushroom Gorge, lol.
There's just a lot more pointing to Dry Dry Ruins being closer to actualisation than Toad's Factory. Multiple objects with the course's title in the filename (PillarWiiddr, PillarWiiddrBase, SandHillWiiddr) plus a Pokey object that has no place on any other known track (unless they add some to Yoshi Desert, I guess).

Toad's Factory currently just has the different types of conveyor belts, which could theoretically be reused on other tracks.

I like your optimistic thinking that not all of the unknown tracks are Tour originals lol. Personally I wish they had left the city themed tracks in Tour so that we’d get more retro tracks. It’d be a shame to not get DK Mountain, Delfino Square, and Toad’s Factory like you said.

I've played Ninja Hideaway again.

I still hate sharp the turns are. These dang 90 degree angles. I'm constantly hitting the walls and I'm falling off the paths and I just...I just don't get it.

Please, let me understand this course.

I feel like that’s a pretty big mistake to make and not catch…but I guess we’ll have to wait until the next update to know for sure, yeah. Personally, I think they may have recently ramped up development specifically for the Booster Course Pass, or they may have even been stockpiling courses to debut in the Booster Course Pass first, which could explain the sudden large number of original courses, but I dunno. Guess we’ll find out in a few months!

I do think base game numbers are worth taking into consideration too, yeah. Combining the base game track counts with the datamined prefixes alone (not adding any) we'd have:

I wonder if the lower number of SNES and N64 games could be influenced in part by the fact that both of those original games are playable on Switch?

There's just a lot more pointing to Dry Dry Ruins being closer to actualisation than Toad's Factory. Ah, okay, thanks! I don’t really know the specifics of what exactly has been datamined, so that context is super helpful! …I’m probably still gonna leave out Dry Dry Ruins in my predictions and just put Mushroom Gorge in place of Toad’s Factory, though, lol.

I also didn’t catch that it was SNES Mario Circuit 1 in particular that is shown on the banner, so I guess I should update that, too. Is the same true for Vanilla Lake 2 as well, then? Also, is Bowser Castle 3 being more likely than 4 a similar case to Dry Dry Ruins over Toad’s Factory, with it just having more pointing towards it?

Sorry if I’m being a bother by asking so much, lol, I just wanna try to understand what’s most likely here and why. =P I appreciate all the datamined info and such that you share here!

I just think they know SNES tracks are kinda uninteresting; good filler for the format of Tour but in 8DX they'd just be boring and short. Wii and 7 already had only two SNES tracks each, and 8 launched with only one (later getting RR as DLC).

For N64 I really do think there's no chance of there only being two of them among 48 total tracks. Playing them in 8 is a totally different experience from playing them in the original..

I honestly don't know where people are claiming to see Vanilla Lake (or Merry Mountain) on the banner. Personally think they've just confused the shots of DK Summit and Singapore Speedway for those, but I don't know for certain.

EDIT: Oh, whoops, forgot to answer on the Bowser Castle thing. That's just my personal guess, since Bowser Castle 3 was already remade in Wii; there's nothing pointing towards either being more likely, we just know there is another Bowser Castle coming.

It's no problem; I like speculating about this sort of thing, lol.

Okay, I played Ninja Hideaway a fourth time. I feel like I understand this course better.

The top routes are really punishing? That's where most of those terribly 90 degree turns are. The lower route is slower I suppose but also a lot more chill. I don't feel like I'm gonna hit the walls if the top part moves slightly.

One day I will get you, Ninja Hideaway.

BTW, I saw someone mention it, but what does 100%'ing MK8D mean? Is it simply getting 3 stars on all cups in 200cc? Or is there more?

For Mario Kart 8 (Deluxe) I think it'd be collecting every kart part, which involves beating all the staff ghosts in time trials and picking up thousands upon thousands - but not New Super Mario Bros 2 amounts - of coins.

Speaking of beating all the staff ghosts, I wonder if they’ll add some sort of reward for beating the staff ghosts for all the new courses once they’ve all been added…

The new courses aren't too exciting, but it's nice to have more reasons to play Mario Kart.

The Ninja one was the big standout. I was a little surprised that none of the courses used antigrav.

We did go back and revisit the N64 Choco Mountain to see the differences, and wow was that miserable lol.

Looking at the banner again...

Anyone else see it? Just imagine the lava in the Double Dash track shot is a bright orange as Tour renders it.

The top routes feel like high risk, high reward.

And I love it!

is there a way i can play a grand prix online with a friend who is on another Switch
Unfortunately, no. Can’t do it via local wireless either, sadly. Would be nice for two people to be able to work towards their Grand Prix progress at the same time outside of local play on the same system…

yeah we wanted to play the new courses together but we are in different cities and none of them are showing up online for voting

That seems like a bad regression from MK7 even though it makes sense given the Wii U origins of the title. A shame they couldn’t implement it for Deluxe but they probably had a hard deadline to have the game ready as close to the Switch launch as they could reasonably get.

We should probably hold a tournament in celebration of the new courses, no?
At some point I want to. I think what I want to do is to hold one in two weeks. Give people time to practice the new courses and to give Kirby some breathing room next week (totally not because I want to play it, lol).

It'll also give me some time to figure out how to actually host the tournament - and potentially figure out some sort of prize. Custom Fami Badges, perhaps?

One thing I noticed when racing on GBA Sky Garden, at the bottom of the level it’s possible to see the thunderclouds from Cloudtop Cruise (or could just be my imagination). Either way, super cool attention to detail and reminds me of Double Dash’s racetracks are connected to each other/can see each other in the distance.

I found the turns after jumps to be the hardest. The main trick is to have your angle right on the jump. If you are just facing ahead when you take the jump, you'll never make the next turn.

A really cool detail of the course is in the hang glider section right at the finish line that lets you go up to the second floor right away, they stick a huge collection of coins in the air a bit lower and more to the left than you might expect. Grabbing one sets you up well for the next turn, so it essentially teaches you about approaching tight turns with good angles.

(laughs like will be able to learn ninja hideaway in two weeks)

Maybe this course is devisive, but I really hope DK Mountain from Double Dash gets added through the DLC.

EDIT: It’s my favourite MK map...but the rickety bridge that’s right before the finish line...pain.

Tour Sydney Sprint - spotted on datamined banner.
Tour Singapore Speedway - spotted on datamined banner.
Tour [Datamined City Track - Amsterdam]
Tour [Datamined City Track - Bangkok]
Tour [Datamined City Track - Athens]
Tour Merry Mountain
Tour Ninja Hideaway - part of Wave 1.
Tour [Datamined New Track - Sweets themed] - spotted on datamined banner.
Tour [Datamined New Track]
Tour [Datamined New Track]

I doubt we get Yoshi Desert AND Dry Dry Ruins, given that they're both Yoshi themed desert courses. I can see Toads Factory or Moonview Highway instead.

I just have no desire honestly. Im just okay until a true successor is released.

So Coconut Mall feels the same. Maybe a little faster. The ending is the worst part imo.

Ninja Hideaway is hot garbage though lol.

I know this makes me shallow or entitled or whatever, but man, I really wish the MK8D DLC looked better. Like MK8 is such a beautiful looking game. And this just doesn't live up to that standard, and very noticeably so. And the thing is, I don't even care for visuals at all in most games I play usually, but given the vast difference between the base game tracks and these ones, it's hard not to notice.

Now, with that complaint out of the way, I do want to say how great it feels to go back to MK8, and enjoy new (in a manner of speaking) tracks to flex the perfect MK8D mechanics on. Like, really, this game is a joy to play, and the new tracks have been adapted so well. I adore how they handled the Tour tracks, and I would say those, plus the GBA one, are the highlights of the experience (Ninja Hideway especially is just unreasonably well done lol).

Overall, I do like this DLC pack a lot, I just wish it lived up to the impeccable standard of the base game visually speaking.

One thing that made me feel better about Sky Garden here, is that while it isn’t as cool as the original track’s shortcuts, there is still one mushroom shortcut right at the end of the last U-turn. That big bean stalk has a leaf that covers it slightly as you drive past, but there’s a big opening in the bean stalk where you can mushroom over the clouds to cut the corner.

Graphics sure, but how is it low effort in music?
Nevermind that part, in my head the « legacy tracks » from the base game where rearranged in the big band jazz style of the new MK8 tracks so I thought they’d do the same with the DLC tracks, but after replaying them last night I realized I was wrong.

Anyway, the music from Choco Mountain is a banger, it reminds me of Big Thunder Mountain which is always a big plus
