Apparently the Kingdom Hearts cloud ports are a shitshow. What a surprise. The only good cloud port I've seen was Control, so Remedy must be wizards or something.

It's hilarious how Hello Games (No Mans Sky) and Techland (Dying Light) both ported super intense last gen games to the Switch, but Square Enix can't port two gen old games without having trouble.
I played the demo of KH3 which was... not the worst thing ever, but no acceptable substitute for a native version. I can't imagine how bad it gets later on during the higher-fidelity areas.
Because that's not how these production orders work.

The Switches they're manufacturing now are part of contracts from a number of different suppliers that were probably inked back in 2018 or 2019. The manufacturers and suppliers need to do their best to keep their end of those contracts, or else they'll pay a penalty.

For a new 4k Switch they will have completely different contracts, also signed years ago, some with the same suppliers and some with different suppliers. Those suppliers again will have to do their best to meet the terms of the contract, or else pay a penalty.

One contract doesn't necessarily affect the other, especially if the contract for the SoC has gone to Samsung as rumored, and not TSMC. The amount of Switches they are now producing isn't necessarily indicative of how many new 4k Switches they could produce.

That's not to say it'll definitely happen, but the chip shortage isn't really a reason for it not to happen.
Fair. Didn't know this.

I imagine those contracts have been revisited in that time though. Unless they're just making as much as they can of them when they can and they'll wait to launch when they have like 20 million to ship.

I like to think this is how it went down:

Square Enix: "OK Nintendo, you can have Sora for Smash. Would you like Kingdom Hearts games as well?"
Nintendo: "if you want to put 'em out, go ahead"
Square Enix: "Well uh... you wanna help us pay for them?"
Nintendo: "No, not particularly."
Square Enix: "hmm. I guess we'll half ass some cloud ports."
Nintendo: "whatever, we do not care about your silly mickey mouse anime game."

Square Enix: "So we're also working on a HD2D Live-A-Live remake..."
Nintendo: "OK NOW WE'RE TALKING. Want a Direct spotlight? It's yours. This is awesome. You have our full support."

"Hey we are making a new The World Ends with You. Would you like to make a deal to make this game exclusi....
"Hahahahahahahahahaha! Ah good one. Got anything else? Oh, Chocobo GP. We'll feature that one in a Direct".

Yeah from what I understand they're renegotiated every now and then. And there are also clauses for adjusting the contracts based on need. That's how Nintendo is able to ramp up supply if they need to.

I also kinda don't understand what they're doing with Splatoon 3.

Why not just have a dedicated Direct for it now? Or just wait until there's a confirmed launch date to show everything off. I understand announcing it as early as they did for recruitment purposes, but it just feels strange at this point. I don't know what they're waiting for. Because everything they've shown so far looks like it's very iterative. I know it won't be, but I don't think they're showing it in the best light.

It feels really weird! Like there's some big secret about it they're not sharing. Like it's free to play, or there's a battle royale, or something like that. Vehicles? I dunno, something

That's just a tried and tested Nintendo tactic at this point.

I wish they would just say what it is! Because realistically it's coming out within the next 6 months, and we've known about it for a year. So truly what is the point in waiting?

Like, Mouthfull Mode is pretty significant for the new Kirby but there's just not a big marketing cycle for it anyway. The game only had 3 trailers and is out in a month. I don't need to see any more.

True, they fall into these holes sometimes. I will never forgive the 3D World debut trailer.

Probably a big single player mode. Which was kinda hinted at from that first trailer, maybe sorta open-ish.

They are definitely taking their time blowing off the lid with this game. Most likely the outcome will be great in our favor.

Nintendo has clearly developed a pattern where "the big twist" is shown off later. Cappy wasn't shown right away in Mario. The shiekah slate powers were one of the last things revealed for BotW. Fire Emblem showed off the time skip months before release. Spirit mode in Smash was held off for a while. And now Kirby's mouthful mode is barely revealed.

The game still has several months of marketing left. I do think we'll get a dedicated Splatoon direct before e3 because they're going to want to have a testfire at some point.

Splatoon marketing cycle is gonna end just like any other Nintendo marketing cycle

"Oh my gosh new game!"
"What is Nintendo doing?! They are not showing it in the best light!"
"Oh wow, huge info blowout! So I'm so hyped for this game!"
"Damn they sold a lot of copies of this game!"

So how do you guys feel about the slight controversy about how the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC might just be the tour maps put into the game? Do you guys find that bad? Or do you not really care? I'm interested in the general opinion here.
I don't have any strong feelings about it, but I think it's interesting from a development point of view. I'd imagine given the nature of the DLC, the EPD 9 team probably also has a non-MK release coming in the next couple years.

Nintendo is correct then. HD 2D and Team Asano games are goat.

I imagine the contracts are largely irrelevant in light of the Covid pandemic. We'll find out soon enough, but I can imagine any possible legal case being thrown out due to the unprecedented events that have caused the shortage of supply. That's assuming the contracts don't already have a clause to cover global events out of the control of the company, of course.

My gut feeling is that the 4K Switch was abandoned and the OLED brought in as an alternative. As a result I don't think we will see a 4K now - it will be a Switch 2 in a couple of years time.

Could be wrong... and the whole BotW2 with Switch Pro thing could be real, but I just can't see how it's possible in this time frame. PS5/Series X supply issues are a pretty good gauge I think.

Just ordered a 2TB SSD for my PS5. Between the 625GB one filling up so quick and my internet averaging 3mbps it felt like a good investment.

Should have it in time for Horizon and Elden Ring.

sure would be nice if Nintendo, on the next Switch revision, in lieu of a micro SD card slot, just gave us a NVME SSD slot

and then our hands melted

by the way I'm gonna do the raffles eventually don't stock up on pitchforks

just haven't gotten to it yet
I heard a nasty rumor that you're corrupt. If anyone pays you $10, then you'll give them a $5 sShop gift card. Say it ain't so, Raccoon. 😢

It's on Switch Lite.

But seriously with every cloud game on Switch, it gets worse. Now we're having framerate problems in these games. If they ported KH3 natively, it'd have much less than this.
Is it true what I have heard that in Japan this is a non issue due to much better infrastructure?

Either way, I like my games fully mine to play whenever, even if on airplane mode. So no thanks.

I just wish wish wish they only kept K3 on the Cloud, as I already have it for PS4. I just wanted the other ones... which are PS3 games.... physical.

SIGH

This might me true for other cloud games but KH3 has framerate problems, which is caused on their part. Whatever they're running the game on.

The difference is BOTW's first official trailer sold the game and its premise. Also it was the one to have the sheikah slate powers.

Cappy as a character wasn't shown right away in Mario Odyssey but the first trailer had Mario running around a level inspired by New York City, plus three more levels that proved the sandbox nature of the game, plus the hat abilities (not the copy abilities, strictly the platforming ones). There was plenty to go on in the first trailer for those games. Hell, the first Xenoblade 3 trailer has plenty to get excited about without even showing the combat. The first Mario Kart 8 trailer sold the anti-gravity, the first Metroid Dread trailer sold the EMMI, Animal Crossing New Horizons showed weather and crafting, etc.

Splatoon 3 just feels like too long of a dripfeed. I know something is coming with it but every time they've shown it after it debuted, it's left no impact. As Nintendo's biggest new franchise is decades, I think it's fair to expect a little more. That's all.

The premise of BotW was that it's an open world Zelda game, but the gameplay systems were not known until much later. And those first teaser trailers showed nothing about the sheikah slate powers. Magnesis, Cryo, Stasis were not shown off until E3 2016. You could argue that the main gameplay visual of Link able to scale anything in the game wasn't known until e3 2016 as well. It was literally the key art of the game for a while.

The premise of Super Mario Odyssey is that it's Mario running around sandbox levels, but the main gameplay hook was the capture mechanic. Again, shown off much later.

The premise of Xenoblade 3 is that it's a huge story driven JRPG with big environmental landscapes. But we have zero combat gameplay so far.

Dread feels like an exception, but it also has the shortest reveal to release pipeline of any of these titles.

There's a huge difference between what the premise of a game is, what the main gameplay hook is that makes it unique to other entries. And like I mentioned, it's something that they've leaned into in the Switch era. So not sure why we're bringing up Mario Kart 8 here.

I can understand not finding early trailers exciting. Some of these first teaser trailers are huge duds. But for the most part, Nintendo holds off on showing the main gameplay hook of their games until much later in the marketing cycle.

Fami, I did it! I played an actual handheld video game. My gaming time has been extremely limited the past couple months. I started TWEWY in early December, got to play maybe an hour or so, and haven't had a chance to play it since then. So I lost the flow of it a bit but I'm enjoying it and trying to get back into it. Any tips for controlling the top screen in battle? It doesn't seem like my control pad inputs match up with the arrows on the screen, but maybe it's from using the circle pad and not the d-pad.
