I still think the best direct of all time is E3 2014. The Switch Directs have been consistently really good (whereas a lot of the Wii U era ones were stinkers) but never mind blowing like that or January 2013.
I've been weirdly nostalgic for those Wii U era directs lately. Might watch that January 2013 one tonight just to see how it holds up.

Splatoon 3 is a guarantee. It's gonna be Nintendo's 'Summer' game and E3 is too late to ramp up marketing.

We'll get updates on games like Kirby, Triangle Strategy, Advanced Wars, etc for sure. Updates on stuff like Bayonetta 3, BotW2 and Mario + Rabbids 2 I'd say are unlikely - those seem like second-half games that will see more of a focus at E3.

As for unknown titles - there's rumours of stuff like Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, Metroid Prime Remasters/Makes, and a new 'Casual' game, but it's always difficult to realistically 'expect' anything of that sort. Definitely expect random third party ports and a few weird indie/smaller projects - they're always there lol
The infamous Metroid Prime remakes, maybe it's finally time

What's a really bad WiiU direct? Just curious what kind of announcements were disappointing back then! I didn't have a WiiU so no frame of reference.

While we’re talking about past Directs, what are some of your favorite trailers or announcements from Switch Directs? My top 5 would probably be,

1. Odyssey trailer from E3, so iconic with the reveal of the Cappy mechanic and the Pauline song.

2. Smash Bros teaser in March 2018, the Inklings were a great way to start it off and the Smash Ball in the inkling’s eye may be the best shock reveal Nintendo has done. It’s even got an arrangement of the main theme.

3. Metroid Dread reveal in 2021, full of awesome gameplay and the “Dread” name reveal was excellent.

4. King K. Rool reveal trailer in 2018, really everything from that Smash Direct but especially the well done Donkey Kong animation. The fakeout with Dedede is classic.

5. E3 2019 Zelda announcement, really just a teaser but drew me in immediately with its mysterious vibe.

Honorable mentions: Mario Maker 2 reveal with slopes, “Everyone Is Here” at E3 2018, Kirby trailer from 2021, etc.

snap

"This is the new world of Zelda."

I still remember that day so vividly. That single moment made me squeal with joy and fall off my chair.

As a tired old man I don't like the 11pm time but will not do that I usual do and watch it before work the next day. Can't miss the first real Fami direct!

Let’s think about this please. There’s a reason so many people from Treehouse is hyping this direct. They never do this to this extent.

Because there will be big announcements from Nintendo. I think BotW 2 will get a story trailer and confirmed for Holliday 2022.
Yeah I think it finally gets an official name. And then huge blowout at E3.

EDIT: Oh yeah E3 is dead. Then huge blowout at nondescript summer Direct.

I agree. E3 2014 got me to finally buy a WiiU.

January 2013 is fascinating to look at now. Nintendo really laid out everything they could. Some of those games were a long ways away. The WiiU was massively struggling so the direct feels like they desperately needed to just announce everything first party. I don't think we'll get a direct like this ever again.

I had a sense this was going to happen, due to being about 8 days behind on my podcast playlist and seeing an NVC episode titled "When Are We Getting Another Nintendo Direct?" In a spot on the list where I'll get to it late tomorrow afternoon. I read that and said to myself "probably before I listen to this episode."

As for predictions? We'll probably see the Prime remake, so they can get that announcement out of the way to be able to show a trailer for Prime 4 at E3.

Great list! I would probably put Splatoon 3 in top 5 or maybe in honorable mentions that was just to out of the blue.

E3 2015 was perhaps the worst one in terms of notoriety. It was the one where Nintendo basically said "The Wii U is dead and the 3DS is dying," without actually saying it. Its biggest new game reveals were... Star Fox Zero, Zelda: Triforce Heroes, Metroid Prime: Federation Force and Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival. It was also overly-long and had unnecessary segments on games we already knew about - ending on a "design lesson," for Super Mario Maker, for instance.

Sadly it was Iwata's last E3. Really fucking sucks that he never got to see the turnaround of Breath of the Wild and the Switch.

So Fami, I always ask this question when a new Direct is on the way. Which Nintendo Direct intro is the best one?

I have to say, 2015-2016 is just so nostalgic now but that music is still a banger.
First intro in Switch era kinda like Snipperclips, catchy music. But overall i probably like the most the newest one. With all the Direct symbol arrows.

Not to mention that they changed the whole layout and intro after two years in a Switch era so maybe, in a fall we are due to another revamp.

I think I prefer 2019-Present, it just gives off the most "hype" energy.

Personally, I don't expect Zelda. Maybe it's just me trying to mentally 'protect' myself, but idk I feel like Nintendo would want a big, fresh blowout at E3.

E3 probably isn't happening this year.

So, Nintendo can talk about BotW2 whenever they want. Maybe they'll want to talk about it tomorrow, especially if they're confident it's launching this year.

I don’t agree. They can easily do it now to start the marketing for the year with a trailer and title drop. It’s BotW 2. These games should get the wheels spinning prior to E3 with it coming this holiday.

I think I generally get more excited for the February Directs more-so than E3 (Summer) Directs now. They're usually packed with info and let us know what the year is really gonna look like for Nintendo.

Announcements don't have to be "an E3 game" or "fit mainstream", it could literally be anything and THAT's exciting

My prediction;
No Zelda at all
No new mario
No donkey kong
New games announced will be a new fire emblem and Metroid prime 1

People will be disappointed because nothing out of left field was shown and the only new games were leaked / rumored ones.

The only thing that will disappoint me is if we don’t get the FF Remasters announced for consoles.

Eh, if it's launching late this year (like Sept-Nov) I don't think they'll want to dedicate too much time to it right now. They'll want to sell their upcoming games like Splatoon 3 and Kirby first.

Then they can have a big BOTW2 blowout in June or July.

I'm not expecting Zelda in the slightest, think we'll see that at E3.
I'll be happy if we just get Xenoblade and Fire Emblem alongside some cool 3rd party stuff.

Astral Chain's debut trailer was stunning. Not a thing I could predict, or ask for, but as soon as the trailer was underway I needed that game.

Quite an accomplishment. The fact it was backed up by a trailer for a remake of my favourite Zelda really blew my mind.

I hope we will get Lolo 2 and 3 on the online services soon.
And i hope one day we will see a sequel

oh, if it's shown tomorrow, I don't expect a blowout. That'll be saved for the summer (if it's launching this year).

Yeah, I think E3 is off the table this year. However I agree Zelda won't be shown until later, probably May or June.

The switch era has given us so much it's hard to determine.

5. Metroid: Dread reveal. We knew Metroid was coming but seeing the name dread rrally got me.

4. Mario Odyssey Reveal. Sandbox Mario is up there. To learn that this new game was going back to that AND it took place in all these wacky worlds!? Too much.

3. Bayonetta 3. Teaser trailer. Bayonetta 2 is one of the most important games in my life so I was stoked to see more Bayo.

The next two are basically 1a and 1b. The combo will always be the best reveal from Nintendo.

A. Banjo smash reveal. I'd been waiting for anything Banjo related for years. Nearly had me in tears.

B. BotW sequel reveal. Coming off the high of Banjo, this new Zelda reveal sent me to the gosh dang moon.

The smash teaser was so fucking good. The Splatoon trailer fake out and sudden tone shift, subtly confirming BotW link… it was so much with so little. I got chills

We’ve had some great smash trailers since then so that initial teaser is kinda forgotten but it’s so expertly crafted imo.

Huh. That is interesting.

Listening to Good Vibe Games Direct prediction video to get a feel about what is definitely not going to be at the presentation.

I think that NLG doing F-Zero is a neat idea. Might not seem like something where they'd be able to put a lot of their character animation talents to use, but there are ways to get around that.

The Smash Ultimate reveal is the best teaser Nintendo's ever done imo. It was perfect.
