Slightly warmer than room temperature take: even though I don't like it, industry consolidation isn't a big deal like some people make it out to be. Again, that doesn't mean I'm cheering it on. Just that it doesn't mean much to me.

EPD's Acquisition Simulator actually stars the robot from the farewell gift Retro Studios sent to Reggie. The robot was originally planned to appear in Retro's new IP, Internal Development Simulator, which was canned after it hurt Miyamoto's feelings.

@Dardan Sandiego Great thread! Almost didn't see me in the Avatar image, but then again that's probably my avatar lol

In other news... why did I buy Pokemon digitally to "play it day one," when it's now day three and I've yet to play it :( I should really aim to finish more games before the release dates of ones I'm looking forward to. Thankfully Horizon Zero Dawn should be finished tonight (I'm just about to learn what Project Zero Dawn is, which seems near the end) so tomorrow it's Pokemon time :D

As part of my attempt to minimise Productivity Anxiety, I'm keeping multiple games on the go and doing them a little at the time. I've hit the 30th floor in Dungeon Encounters, so now it's time for atmospheric lighting and the Forest Temple in Ocarina of Time...

Oh my god that is an incredible ST. Especially that last image.

It looks like your avatar is eating them.

What even is your avatar tho? Maybe I’m just uncultured but it looks like some kinda stone furnace with googly eyes.

It's a mage tower from a game project I worked on for a while and then realized I can't build a WRPG by myself.

AKA gave up on.

Well I think it’s a great mage tower with googly eyes. Totally capable of eating other avatars

Nintendo acquires

People often don't realize that acquisitions aren't always a net positive. For one, companies are more often bought for their IPs, not their staff. That can lead to layoffs because "redundancy" or because people were working on projects that the new parent company don't see as desirable. Many IPs are killed or stay dead because while a modest amount of sales is significant for a smaller company, it may be nothing for the bigger company. In fact, modest success with smaller titles may be a negative to the big company because may sell the smaller sales as a disappointment, leading to stock value loss. The parent company also buys the smaller companies debts, issues, and problems and often people are laid off to scrub out the bad bits.

People rightfully complain about how Activision and EA killed off a ton of IPs, studios, and careers but I don't think we should just assume things will be different under a console manufacturer. Sony just recently gutted their Japan Studios and shut down Evolution Studios. Microsoft closed down Lionhead. That all happened just last generation.

Even AlphaDream closed down despite working with Nintendo for years. Now they weren't fully owned by Nintendo so that staff weren't under Nintendo's payroll but all of those employees were out of jobs once the contracts with Nintendo ended.

It was lost when my computer got borked :(

As was my entire UE4 project of the game. Though I do think I can still salvage some stuff from that drive.
That's sad

Had I more time I would love to help with that game

Nah it was way too ambitious, it was never really going to go anywhere. I just did it for fun.

Here's basically all of what I managed to do:

The big things that hung me up were saving (very important), enemy pathfinding (also very important), and inventory management across 4 characters (less important). It made it kinda hard to will myself to do more when I couldn't figure those basic things out.

Wow. I legit always thought your avatar was from a Myst game or something. Had no idea it was your own work! It's really good :)

Well I'm no artist, I got the base model from a free open source blender model repository. But I did modify it a bunch, I like to at least make some changes to the stuff I use.

But thank you!

These acquisitions are getting out of hand! I was fine when Microsoft acquired Activision. I've come to accept Sony acquiring Bungie. But now Famiboard has acquired a fake month called February!?!?!?!? It's ridiculous and needs to stop!!!!!! 😡

After getting over the initial shock factor of the purchase itself, I can't help but feel Sony overpaid a bit (to put it mildly) for Bungie (at least initially), especially compared with other purchases.

This is your friendly reminder to floss after every meal, or else the only thing you'll be acquiring is plaque, tartar, gingivitis, and other gum diseases.

Soooo yeah Arceus is good. I'm still not through the tutorial but I looooove how quick and snappy everything is. And the Pokemon themselves seem so much more alive and interactive, it's like night and day compared to the past games.

Why do I feel like this is you somehow low-key continuing to throw shade at #TeamFebruary?
