Pre-Release Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (2024) — Pre-release Discussion Thread

Is there any point of the game where you’d need a hint Toad?

I could see one being necessary for chapters 4 and 6 specifically.

There's no reason for him to be dressed the way he is if that's his role in the game. Also I'm pretty sure there's a badge that already simplifies action commands so it would seem very redundant to simplify it moreso.

What is he dressed like? Don't recall. And also, you're correct that there's a badge that makes action commands simpler. Perhaps they'll add something like the multi-hit bonus for nailing the action command's timing, or the ultimate group attacks just like SMRPG. In any case, I'm fully expecting that every addition will be useful in making the game easier

Where did you find this and why does it say "Direct" in the image? Or was it just screenshot from an older Direct?

That's from the Direct it was revealed in.

More new character artwork (the partners with their battle win poses, it looks like) thanks to these pre-order stickers.

The UK My Nintendo Store has a pre-order for Luigi's Mansion 2 HD (it's actually got several as there's a couple of bundles with a Wobbly Luigi, or that, a diorama, and a mug) but there's nothing for TTYD yet, despite it releasing a month sooner.

Weird.

Oh, like the separate eshop releases after March 2021?
I still get angry about that. Like I own that collection, I’ve put over a hundred hours into it. But you remaster two of the greatest games of all time ( and sunshine ) and then stop selling it. Just honestly baffling. It’s like Nintendo was somehow worried about devaluing Mario galaxy and sunshine somehow by making them widely availible. It’s cool that 64 is on nso, but the fact that new switch owners can’t officially buy that collection to play galaxy and sunshine is a sham

Even Nintendo doesn’t want you to remember the Mario sunshine and galaxy remasters they made then inexplicably stopped selling

Would be hilarious if they showed them anyway with a disclaimer like "if you got them you got them, otherwise you're out of luck, sry pal"

I know its likely the least revolutionary of three but for some reason I've always liked Sunshine the best. I like how Mario controls in the game with Fludd. The tropical aesthetic of the game is great. The introduction of Bowser Jr. I will say that it's OST isn't as good as 64 and Galaxy. But as an overall package Sunshine is my preference.

It occurs to me that I’ll finally get to beat the Pit Of 100 Trials now. As a kid I got to around level 80, left my GameCube on overnight, woke up and the disc spinner was broken. RIP

I've been unable to preorder this today because Shopto's website is useless (not accepting any of my bank cards despite me oking payments on the relevant apps, and refusing to let me add a new payment method) so I may end up ordering from somewhere else even if it costs a couple of quid more.

Not sure about shipping and exchange rate, but there’s a sale here:

Home menu icon is here (image on the left), since the game is already up on the eShop backend. Artwork is slightly different from what they just released for promo (image on the right)!

It's possible they could still change the Home Menu icon to reflected the updated marketing material (having Bowser munch on the map is a nice touch).

The one on the right looks better imo.

I can preorder games the week of at my gamestop and it's fine. So I'll wait until closer to release date but I'm for sure getting two copies. Both for me! 😅

Yeah, I refused to buy it since it was limited time and I'm very nostalgic for galaxy and always wanted to finish Sunshine. Oh well

And Mario Galaxy 2 missing is still the weirdest thing.

Isn’t the version of Super Mario Galaxy in that just the port they made for the NVIDIA Shield? I’d assume they didn’t have anything like that easily available for Galaxy 2, so it’d need more work

No, they're two different versions.

The Nvidia Shield version of Galaxy is emulated but was handled by Nvidia Lightspeed Studios. The 3D All-Stars version is a mixture of emulation and port work, running on NERD's Wii/GC emulator, known as Hagi. The latter method was also used for Mario Sunshine and Pikmin 1 and 2 on Switch.

Why are people brinigng up the Mario 3D All-Stars Collection all of a sudden?

I don't think TTYD Switch is using backend emulation. Otherwise, we would be having a toggle to switch between new and old graphics.

Edit: It seems to me some of the newer footage addresses the overly glossy criticisms from the early trailers.

About to fire up the NSO version of Paper Mario. Realized I never really finished it while playing it myself so when I have off work next week I will be doing that in anticipation of TTYD.

Now if only I could preorder the physical copy from Amazon

I will be getting this, since I didn't buy or play the original, but I played and beat Origami King and I had a lot of fun, and since everybody says TTYD is the best in the series, I want to play it. I don't think I'll get it until next year or so, though, because I'm still currently going through Mario RPG Remake and I don't want to get burnt out with yet another Mario rpg style game.

Can't believe this is 2 months away

Hyped as hell, just need Day 1 60 FPS patch please (or that the trailers have just been downgraded to 30)

They wont put a pipe to get to creepy steeple. Thats a very poor "fix". You are meant to do battles on the way back to feel less powerful without your companions and then back with Viv so you appreciate it more. That's the entire point.

If anything they should double down and change up the section more, have some monster/creatures chase Mario in the dark forest on the way back, have them taunt you that you are powerless alone. And then have Viv be a big help on the way back. Maybe the fire attacks create a light that pushes dark enemies away and give enemies some strong charged attacks the evasion skill helps avoid. Maybe go the next step and have dusk turn outright night for that part of the game, have the forest itself change a bit visually, use vines to change the path.

Of course that's a big effort for a remaster so they'll probably keep it as is.

There could be more and earlier blue pipes/map navigation for other chapters though (and the admiral white search while somewhat humorous the first time, overstays its welcome badly so that could be shortened without much loss).

At this point hoping for 60 fps is setting yourself up for disappointment. Which is a shame, because the reactiveness of the action commands it part of what elevated TTYD for me. They'll probably have to loosen the acceptable timing a little to make up for it, for it to feel as good. Which is fine.

I'd appreciate a hard mode, but that's probably not in the cards.
