NSO NSO Missions and Rewards

FYI, if you access the AC section via the news banner you get the old UI so you can see the icons but you’re still blocked from “purchasing” unless you’ve booted the software recently

You can still access that same menu from the Missions & Rewards menu too; you just have to select the Animal Crossing: New Horizons thumbnail again that’s below “Rewards You Can Get by Playing” (it should say “Play x More Times” right above the thumbnail). This leads me to believe that multiple games are going to be present in this menu at the same time.

I think this change would make sense if all old icons were available this way. Basically, the current weekly sets are available to all. Previous icon sets are made available if the game has been recently played.

the only way this would not be terrible is if all previous icons were available for any game you have in your play history. having the old icons rotate in an out, and then the weird requirement of having to run the game on 3 different days in the past 30 days, i have no idea wtf they're thinking.

Last big publisher to finally realize they can make players treat their games as a second or third job. So sick, I love it, I hope every Star equivalent in the new mario game is only available on certain days (wait that's a sick idea for secrets holy)

I think what you describe is where this is ultimately heading. The 3 different days (24 hours apart too) thing is a really bizarre gate to pass through for what is basically GIF files purchased with fake money.

I don’t really have a problem with it if the whole “play the game 3 times across 3 days before you can redeem” thing stays exclusive to old icon elements. It’s a bit of an annoyance, but if you stay on top of the NSO updates and get any new icon elements as they’re released, you shouldn’t have to worry about it anyway. I just wish the availability wasn’t limited even further on top of that, but if they end up making a decent amount of past game icon elements available at the same time and rotate them out regularly enough (and actually rerelease all previous icon elements eventually) then I guess that’s fine.

I feel like the reason why they may be handling it like this is partly as a way to justify shoving all these repeat icon elements into a single menu so that they can release more at once without cluttering things up too much, and partly to limit the amount of Platinum Points anyone can spend on icon elements at any one time. It’s very possible to run out of Platinum Points (if you didn’t already have a large amount stockpiled, at least) and screw yourself over if some physical reward comes out that you really want or something, especially if you’re redeeming every icon element as they’re released, and I think Nintendo has tried to be mindful of that and knows that a lot of people redeem every icon element they can, so perhaps gating icon element rereleases behind having played the games a few days in a row might be their way of making sure that they’re not overwhelming anyone (especially newer Switch owners who want to collect icon elements but have missed out on a lot already) by releasing too many to spend your points on at once (at least not without a bit of a barrier for some), while still having a decent amount of reruns available at the same time (which I assume they’re going to start ramping up now with the new menu).

Yeah, it’s kinda weird and probably stricter than it needs to be, but ultimately I find it pretty inoffensive, and if it means that we’ll more consistently get reruns of old icon elements, I won’t complain, lol. My partner accidentally missed some of the Super Mario Bros. Wonder icon elements so hopefully this will allow them to still get those eventually, because we’ve been worrying that the specific ones they missed may never be rereleased.

Gonna make a bold prediction here and say that nintendo is doing this stuff so late in the switch life cycle to test out things for when they implement their own achievement system on Switch 2 in which:

  • Switch 2 achievements will be called "Missions"
  • Completing missions for games gets you platinum points
  • Said Platinum Points can be spent to unlock icons/themes/backgrounds for those games

Not really a fan of this unless it is the games given to you as an NSO member. Just seems too restrictive for what amounts to Nintendo kitsch, especially when the main way to get platinum points is playing their mobile games. Not a big deal obviously since it’s just icons, but these should be easy to get not have multiple steps to acquire.

Really not a fan of the change here. It’s annoying extra steps and complication for what should be a simple fun thing and the lock UI looks unappealing.

I don't know about the rest of you, but personally speaking, no. If this is how it's gonna be with these icons from now on, then I'm pretty much done getting them.

It’s very likely not gonna be like this for all icons elements from now on—just reruns of past icons elements. So if you’ve been staying on top of any new ones that you want as they’re released, you won’t have to worry about it at all.

They put in the "have to boot the game 3 times to claim" system in just in time for the Mother 3 icons to drop, so that they can advertise them on the Switch Online app for everyone, but effectively region lock them at the same time. Genius

EDIT: Totally missed that there was already discussion on the last page about this, haha

I got a feeling this is the case too. This is a progenitor of a larger change being tested. Even if it's not these specific ideas.

Few things you can take away from reading all of the text:

Ai2hXzc.png
xmIhRWz.png

  • "Rewards you can get by playing" is a system for returning rewards (and the monthly spotlight NSO retro games going forward, it seems) specifically. For now there is nowhere that suggests this will be applied to upcoming new icon waves.
  • Animal Crossing (the only example we can see for now) is set on a permanent monthly cycle going forward; the same as before but fully automated with no more new icons to add. The text implies that other games would be updated on differing schedules (standard but at least they already spell it out); for now we'll have to wait and see how that's handled.
  • There will be more games added to the selection "from time to time"; quite clear about that at least. The wording however makes it unclear if these will be permanent additions to a growing lineup, or remain limited time events. In the past "updated" has been the terminology used for swapping to the next wave from the same game, whereas "distributed until" denotes when a game's icons will no longer be available. The absence of the latter and the use of the former for both the available games and available rewards within those games is what makes this uncertain.

As long as they're not locking already distributed icons, I can live with this, but I'm not a fan of this adjustment. It's such a weird chance with seemingly no real reason...

Okay, so…before I go through the hassle of leaving my Nintendo Switch Online family plan (because you can’t change your account’s region if auto-renewal is enabled, but disabling it cancels your subscription with no way to turn it back on without letting your term lapse, and my partner and I don’t want that), changing my region to Japan, redeeming a free trial for an individual NSO membership, and then attempting to get the Mother 3 icons that way…could someone who doesn’t have auto-renewal enabled try changing their account to Japan to see if that even works for icon elements in the first place? I assume it must work, but I imagine there must be other people here who also want to try to get these Mother 3 icons while they’re available that could check a lot easier than I can if you don’t have auto-renewal enabled.

Very hard to localize jpegs
It’s not about the effort involved, it’s about the optics of it. I was worried this would be the case, as were some others here, because it didn’t seem likely that Nintendo would want to release the Mother 3 icon elements outside of Japan and then face even more ridicule over it—“they’re just taunting us, giving us icons but not the actual game!!” But, of course, people will complain now that we don’t even get the icon elements. Damned if they do, damned if they don’t, I guess.

Nintendo does not want to deal with the issues that come with localizing Mother 3. Don't expect that to ever change within our lifetimes.

They could fix this issue by releasing the actual game over here so they don't have to bend over backwards to avoid mentioning it

I mean, obviously, but clearly that isn’t happening right now, unfortunately, as much as everyone wishes it was. Doesn’t mean they should just not allow Japanese users have Mother 3 related stuff like this just because of that, though.

Not happening until nintendo is confident they won't get sued over it and won't deal with any cultural backlash in the west for certain elements in Mother 3.

At this point you're better off hoping nintendo does a remake.

It's never gotten an official release in the West. Business as usual I suppose.

Edit: Wait, can't you just change your account's region and redeem them?

I changed my account to Japan
I redeemed all the MOTHER 3 icons
I changed my account back to Germany...

Now i can't change my icons, because the NSO app only shows an error... i should have changed my icon when i was japenese 5 minutes ago...

It probably tries to load the last game icon data and i only see "no information available"

*edit I have made an icon for every MOTHER 3 character but i can't switch between them, when i change my account to Germany... Atleast my icon is now Lucas.

Man it would have been easier for Nintendo to not break their app by just letting us have the Mother 3 icons. I’m so upset.

The menu to redeem new icons is also bugged... hey Nintendo, you better fix this asap or stop releasing new icons...

Yeah, my account also has the error now after redeeming the Mother 3 icons while my account was set to Japan… Fuck. I really hope this gets fixed, otherwise anyone who did this is just screwed out of getting new icon elements now…

I’m definitely calling Nintendo tomorrow about this issue with the Mother 3 icon elements fucking up non-Japanese accounts… Hopefully enough other people do the same and they fix it, ’cause this really sucks. >_<

So I think I finally have all of the Animal Crossing icons… someone please tell me there are 586 of them?
I would check my icon elements to confirm for you…if I could. =/

Yep, 586 is the final total for New Horizons. I've still been keeping up with every single icon part (minus the Nintendo Live exclusives of course), so here's all of my totals in case anyone needs to check:

Played it safe by only grabbing the Mother 3 icons on my spare JP account for now; hoping they fix things quickly for everyone who changed region on their main account to grab them.

It sounds like they have in fact fixed this and region swapping will now work for getting the icons with no drawback.
can i region swap if i have eshop money in my account? i remember the last time i tried years ago it wasn't possible unless you had 0 dollars in your account.

They let you brute force through it and accept losing your funds but that is still the only concern to be aware of yeah; you will temporarily lose gold points (not platinum points though, what you need for icons) while your region is changed too but they come back when you swap back.

does anyone know if changing regions has an impact on Game Vouchers? i don't mind losing the literally 1 cent in my account to grab these icons but I've got a voucher left and would obviously prefer not to lose it

sorry but just to make sure, so if i change my region to japan, claim the icons, then change back to NA, my eshop credit will be there, correct? it'll only be gone while i'm switched to japan?

Very glad to hear that the issue is fixed now. I had to pay the $3.99 plus tax to buy an individual NSO membership after temporarily leaving our family membership just to get these fucking Mother 3 icon elements because apparently Nintendo doesn’t allow you to redeem icon elements on a free trial of NSO, so I payed actual money for these things. The lengths I go to to collect icon elements that I don’t even intend to use…

Ooh, are you 100% sure of this? Everything I’ve read about region swapping on Switch, including from Nintendo’s own site, says that you can’t change region with an existing eShop balance. I had hoped to purchase the Switch Brain Age game that we never got in North America while I was switching my region to Japan for these icon elements, but realized that there’s not really any way for me to do that without a Japanese credit card, because even buying a Japanese eShop card would still leave me with an eShop balance after buying the game, preventing me from switching my account back from being set to Japan. But if you actually can just choose to lose your eShop balance, I’d like to do that, but only if I can be 100% certain that that is indeed the case and I’m not gonna have my account stuck being set to Japan over ¥52 that I can’t even spend on anything.

If I understand correctly, no, it’s only your Gold Points that will remain, but your eShop balance will be wiped (if it even lets you change regions with an existing eShop balance in the first place, that is, which I’m still looking for hard confirmation on myself).

So I had a digital pre-order for Endless Ocean and it told me “bro we cannot do this for one of these reasons” when I tried to change regions, one of those regions being “you got cash.” So I think they just don’t let you do it?

It definitely won’t let you do it if you have any active preorders or subscriptions with auto-renew enabled (I had to cancel my Pokémon HOME subscription and leave my NSO family membership and buy an individual one and cancel that before it would let me change my region to Japan, but I didn’t have any preorders or an existing eShop balance to worry about on top of that), but if you cancel those it should allow you, provided you don’t have an existing eShop balance. Though @MondoMega said that it’ll let you brute force it and accept losing your eShop balance if you want, though I’ve not heard that anywhere else yet and I didn’t see anything about that on Nintendo’s official support articles and all so I’m still not completely sure on that one.

would be good if someone with a little bit of eshop credit could confirm how region swapping works and if their balance survives after swapping back. i've recently redeemed a large gift card and wouldn't want to risk it if the result is the credit getting wiped. gold coins remaining is nice but i'm not really worried about those.
