Endless Ocean would be a timely release, honestly. Dave the Diver got popular out of nowhere last year, another diving themed game could get some attention.

I was originally going into this with no expectations, and now I have an expectation, drat.

I can indeed confirm that something is and or will be baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack
Something's back... like... DMC4??? Nah, it can't be. Capcom cannot be that nice and give us Switch owners one of the best DMC's ever, right?

As is tradition. The unofficial Fami Direct Song

FAMI MATTERS

It’s a rare condition, this day and age,
To see a Direct, on the Famiboard front page.
It’s a Nintendo tradition of the grand design,
To make sure their directs are a rarity to find.

Well then there must be some hyped up fans inside these gentle boards.
Cause all I see is a board full of dreams,
With anticipation bursting out of every post’s
seams.

As days go by,
It’s the bigger love of the Fami-ly
At least we got this top tier post out of some rather mid news.

Seems like a difference without a difference? It says about 25 minutes, and on YouTube I see a previous Mini at 26 minutes.
The fact that they dropped the "Mini" moniker is really strange.

So, IMO, dropping the "Mini" branding is just bad idea, it sets people up for disappointment.
I think it's smart, for the reason you've stated. "Mini" has started to mean "lesser announcements" not "fewer announcements." The Mini branding was created in Covid when Nintendo couldn't get as many announcements together at once.

Nintendo doesn't want to have a label that means - intentionally or unintentionally - "there aren't any good games in here." Sometimes general Directs still suck. But a partner Direct might have Monster Hunter in it. Or, you know, a formerly exclusive Microsoft game.

Indie World is also 25 minutes, and has no "mini" branding. If you're a third party publisher it's gotta feel shitty that the one Direct you know you won't have to compete with Mario is the time that Nintendo puts you at the kid's table.

Agreed, adds more weight for the "Partner Direct" brand going into next gen. Meaning those directs can have heavy announcements too with big 3rd party collaborations
This is probably the last Partner Direct for a while, because I imagine Nintendo has a lot of next gen stuff to show us. But Nintendo has to be realizing that sometimes they'll have good direct's worth of third party stuff, but no first party stuff they're ready to show.

So, announced two days before and during a Holiday... weird
Announced beforehand, although this isn't new
  • Announced over 24 hours beforehand. This is new.
Almost as if the last minute delay from last week was real and not made up!

Im expecting Sonic X Shadow generations, Pennys Big Breakaway, something Xbox related, and maybe a neat surprise or two but nothing major

No, but do you know what does?

"Flip Wars 2"

Obviously a much better use of this meme for a much better game :

Wait... Rogue Squadron was made by the Turrican team?!?!

Major TIL mind blown here damn.
Dragon Quest Day is May 27th.

Direct is focusing on games for the first half of the year.

Yuji Horii has confirmed they've been QA testing the game since at least December.

Holy shit.
I wish your username (3) was going to be announced in the direct 😭

I'm really looking forward to a game like Penny Big Breakaway for example, I also want to see more Sonic, I'm always hoping for something new on Ace Attorney, there are always ports I'm looking forward to on Switch too, and my personal interest in the Switch has never been limited to proprietary games.

However, I don't really like Partner Showcases for the simple reason that when you have a general Direct, you can have cool Third Party stuff and also First Party stuffs . You're not limited.

I understand the idea of highlighting third-party publishers. But there's nothing to stop you making a general Direct that's heavily focused on partners but also allows you to make two or three first-party announcements.

if DQ3 HD2D is in this, i'll be able to weather the switch 2 delay.

if not, i may spiral.

do what you need to do SE to make ME happy.

Yeah, I'm sure developers are happy to not have the show they're featured in labeled as a "Mini."

But as a fan, I'm gonna be comparing this non-Mini Partner Showcase to the June 2022 Mini Partner Showcase, which was damn good. As @SirShorse mentioned, Mini branding existed before Partner Showcases. And we know from that that Mini Directs are always lighter on announcements than full-on general Directs. So applying that logic here, removing the "Mini" sets up expectations that Nintendo thinks this is gonna be the best Partner Showcase of all time, as it will be the first non-Mini Partner Showcase.

But yeah, maybe they just wanna rip the bandaid off and retire the "Mini" brand entirely. If it doesn't have an objective criteria (like time duration), then it makes sense to get rid of it.

Nintendo just shot themselves in the foot! This tweet might be the biggest insult by a major gaming company in the past decade. I literally screamed "FUCK YOU" at my screen. I knew there was no expectation it would be a General Direct but the discourse created made me think they were just going to surprise us with it anyway. Absolutely unacceptable to do this to us. Once they knew about the news, they should've cancelled the tweet

Dragon Quest's secret is it's always mid

hulks out

I wanted to like XI so bad with how people talked about it but even though I tried 3 times and even tried playing as far as like halfway into the first act I never could get into it

doesn't help that I hated the music and thought it was super repetitive and the silent protagonist sucked all the air out of every serious scene

never played any other games in the series though so don't have any opinion on them

The Switch 'delay' leak has killed most of my interest in what Nintendo's got coming this year - not that I was all that excited for what was already announced anyway - but FE4R or a Xeno Warriors game would have me pullin' a complete 180.

I mean I'm not getting my hopes up, but... well... A crouton can dream.

Anything is possible. I mean, not at this Direct, but in the future.

I certainly never would've expected the Wii sequel. And the original got an official western release on Wii U.

So at the very least, it's not entirely forgotten about.

I think the problem at large is the fall of Treasure. They have less than 10 employees these days, so they can't do anything on their own. Nintendo would have to dedicate one of their own teams to make a new S&P game. So while it could happen, they likely have other priorities.

Looking forward to it, the last one was decent and there's always at least 1 interesting thing. Penny could well fit the bill, the previews have been great so fingers crossed.
Silksong of course would instantly turn this into the best thing ever but.....

I don't care for them as a general rule but Xenoblade is one of the only things that would maybe get me to actually play a Warriors game and I guess that is vaguely possible here

Fire Emblem I just don't see even a tiny possibility unfortunately

Dragon Quest isn't for everyone, and it might just not be for you.

However, as a nearly lifelong fan of the series, XI is one of the weakest mainline Dragon Quest games imo. The hype for it is vastly overblown.

DQXI is excellent. Safe, yes. Very bread and butter. Its gravest sin is that it’s too long for its own good, and I say this as someone who loves long RPGs.

We should be getting a new Story of Seasons entry this summer. Marvellous has been alternating between new release / remake every Summer.

That Pyoro tweet quoting rebirth is actually Square confirming Final Fantasy VII Remake is coming to Switch with a Rebirth Cloud port for Switch and native version for Switch 2 after May.

"Please Nintendo

yeah when a JRPG gets a lot of hype if I do end up trying it out I tend to end up enjoying it so I kept thinking it would eventually click for me if I kept trying but it just never did

About damn time for DQ3 Remake!

I think I'll enjoy this partner direct. Also, I have yet some Switch backlog to survive 2024.

And, since I asked on Gust's facebook page, brace for Atelier Warriors! Resleriana gave us all the main characters' and relevant companions' 3D models, so let's fucking go!

I wouldn't get your hopes up too high. I believe this was the only other time Nintendo used that exact language to announce a Partner:

While I do agree with you, I do feel like there's a chance that they mentioned it here because this was the first Mini they had ever done so they were just describing what these events could contain! I'm sure by the time the first one aired, they already had plans for what other ones in 2020 would have, including Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity! :D
