Phil hits on what I was saying about how a game will max out potential on the xbox but that MS and that's game brand value can gain from being placed on other platforms a year or so later. It's just common sense haha.

Me looking at the list of games that are likely coming and seeing Sea of Thieves in there:

What's the list you're looking at?

I'm listening to the podcast now as it outlines the games chosen are roughly ~1 year old or older, community driven, first iterations of franchises that I've reached saturation in terms of growth

This one, which was posted on the previous page.

I mean, it's not official, but Sea of Thieves seems to be a lock based on the rumblings.

ima be honest....the rumors and "leaks" made this worse lmao. They made it seem like something it wasn't. Then we took it to another level only to find out it's just a continuation of what they've been doing. MS put games on the Switch.

I think I'm suffering from whiplash.

Yeah, this was blown way out of proportion, nothing is changing other than they are bring some games to other platforms which they already do anyway.

Xbox handheld is interesting though, wonder how it will differ to a Steam Deck/ROG?

A few smaller or gaas titles going multiplatform ballooned in Microsoft going fully 3rd party which is wild.

They didn't have a big output this gen or last gen. These 4 games are the big part of their Xbox 0ne/SX lineup and could be picked first because they're easy to port. I think the rest are coming too.

On one hand this was a nothingburger. On the other why did they record a podcast over 4 old and small titles coming to ps/switch? It doesn't make any sense, this could be three tweets.

They should have just named the games lol. Obviously Grounded and Sea of Thieves make sense. But “community driven games” leaves the door open for Forza, Halo and Gears. Is it really worth continuing to be vague about this when the press knows the games anyway.

They are 100% bringing Starfield and Indiana Jones to PS5. The rumors were 100% right, you even have Phil Spencer doing damage control with his "exclusives will be a small part of the business in 5-10 years"

So… why did they need to wait a week for this?
One would ask why would they have needed this begin with. I guess they were still fumbling about the details, some of the rumors pointed out that there was discussion in Micro on just how many games and which would go multipmatform, or something.

Either way, it seems like a bad handled situation.

Sarah Bond on hardware (@ 18:28):

"And we got more to come. There's some exciting stuff coming out in hardware that we're going to share this holiday. And we're also invested in the next generation roadmap. And what we're really focused there is delivering the largest technical leap you will have ever seen in a hardware generation, which makes it better for players and creators and the visions that they're building"

What a snoozer. No reason they couldn't have dropped this as a press release last Monday (the exclusivity part that is).

Feels like those games make sense to go Multi-plat. Two which are live service games that could benefit from a wider audience, and two which are kinda niche and have likely reached their max potential on Xbox and could benefit from reaching a new audience. They keep their heavy hitters exclusive for now but can break the emergency glass if they need to.

And a commitment to new hardware as well I see. That's good, though I wonder what form it will take

yeah....idk if an all digital hardware lineup is exciting.

Quick Recap

Games
-Four games will be ported to other consoles. No promise of any other games.
-They were not announced today. The teams will announce them on their own time.
-Starfield and Indiana Jones are not part of the four games.
-The driving goal was to grow the franchises.
-Overall, Phil believes exclusive games in the industy are going to less common going forward.
-The decisions was based on games being at least a year old, have already reached their full potential on Xbox.
-Some are "community driven" games. I assume that means GAAS/live service games.
-Phil believes that introducing non-Xbox gamers to these franchises can be beneficial to Xbox as a whole.
-The focus is always "How to grow Xbox".
-More than 10 major releases coming this year to Xbox.
-There will be a June Showcase.

GamePass
-All first party games are still going to be day 1 on GamePass.
-GamePass is still only available on Xbox.
-Cross-save and cross-progression are very important to the Xbox ecosystem.
-Activision-Blizzard games will start to come to GamePass on March 28th, starting with Diablo IV.

Hardware
-Xbox gaming isn't just about one device.
-New devices are planned for Holiday 2024.
-They are working on next generation hardware.

Misc
-2023 was a great year for games, but the industry didn't grow.
-It is either "How to we grow the user base" or "How do we get more dollars from our current base"

Well, the change isn't going to be abrupt as a few of the rumors were suggesting, so yeah, it was blown out of proportion a little bit. In the long term, I think games like Starfield and Indiana Jones will appear elsewhere after a year or so. Meanwhile, Halo, Gears and Age of Empires will remain on Micro's side.

This, I think, is how it's going to work for at least the next three years.

They just acquired Activision Blizzard King, they could potentially have a lot more titles become exclusive in the future even if they don't make CoD one. I think the plan will be if a game is moving people to buy an Xbox like Halo or Starfield, it stays exclusive. GAAS titles that need a larger player base (Sea of Thieves, Grounded) or smaller titles that only appeal to the core audience (Pentiment, Hi-Fi Rush) will be year exclusive before being ported.

Essentially this podcast was a long winded way of saying

At a certain point I was disappointed that I didn’t make this a drinking game as I’ve heard the words Xbox and platform so many times it became comical.

Anyway, MS seems to double down on their “well Xbox is a platform that will transcend hardware in the future, we see games with bigger player bases outside of hardware” and while I understand this is a long term thing, I dunno. As a platform itself Xbox is so boring.

I mean they pride themselves on “hey were the biggest publisher out there”, but they had to buy to become somewhat more interesting. And I fear for ActiBlizz and Zenimax really.

Four "test" games... but wouldn't existing stuff like Elder Scrolls and Fallout already be the answer to a test for Starfield? Moreso than, say, Hi-Fi Rush?

I'm surprised so many see this as less than expected. Were expectations really that they'd immediately say "Yes, all of our biggest games will be multiplatform starting... NOW." They've just stated that they're starting with a finite number, and if those don't fail more will follow.

At worst, newer Halo and Gears games will remain exclusive. Older titles, like Halo MCC, should hit the other consoles, as a way to attract audience to Xbox. And if that doesn't work either, they'll port newer Halo and Gears games too.

For Forza I'm not sure. There's no point in porting older games. Too much licensing involved. I guess it'll stay Xbox exclusive forever.

Wonder if their potential handheld hardware will target streaming (primarily), just like the Portal. I don't think they'll manage a Series S in that form factor. And with their current position in the market, I can't see developers being willing to develop for a whole new Xbox SKU in addition to X and S when they have been critical of the latter already.

I suspected the third-party stuff was overblown, but I'd hoped they'd take this chance to discuss physical media, with the rumours of physical Xbox games going away and a disc-less Series X. They even had a bit about preservation - how can you discuss preservation without that?
