Curious about this too and dug around a bit.

Best I know thus far, stat upgrades are fairly uniform across classes. E.g. on level up +2 to each stat (I've also seen folks mention +3 gain, but again not tied to some specific class growth).

The main differentiator from what I've read? The BASE stats of the unit.

So in that sense, a character who is recruited as e.g. wizard is going to have wizardy base stats. And thus their max HP would never be as high as someone who started as a berserker.

BUT.

Apparently there are farmable stat growth items that can help mitigate this.

If I'm totally off base and anyone has a better grasp of how stat growth works, please let us know!
This make sense, I already did it and while my mage > berserker did have lower HP the equipment complements the rest of the stats. Still farming the green cards seems like a chore as they are random drops (I've only seen 2 in 10 hours) and what stats upgrade is also random (One of the cards only modified the loyalty), so I can see its better to stick to classes more rounded to the original unit

Oh man I seem to recall some really hidden class-change mechanics in OB64.

For example, if you want a golem to class-change its gotta get hit with lightning 😆
And then for the final upgrade you needed to hit them with the special combo attack of fire/wind, which would "temper" them into whatever that form was

That game was silly with some of that stuff

Finished chapter 1 , and have to say, the story while simple it's really good. The music in the last battle of that chapter was awesome, also learnt that is important to check more the warren report as there are events that you can only see there. Also I found funny the portrait of Vice changes that much

That aside looking at my friend list it was like this:

Probably won't be able to play a lot over the coming weeks, or ahead of the holiday break, really. Have not even gotten around to completing the first chapter so far. But as long as I manage to complete my playthrough before FE Engage drops, I will be happy.

Took all next week off so I grabbed this today now that I’ll be able to devote some time to it. This game is everything I want out of Fire Emblem. The voice acting is surprisingly great for an addition to a decades old game. Still getting ramped up on the gameplay but four missions in and I’m having a good time. My only complaint would be not being able to fully rotate the map but that’s understandable given the age of the base game, and it’ll make a nice addition to the new game Matsuno and Co. better be making.

Yeah, I was looking for options to rotate the map for 15 min once I started, only to realize this was not an option in the original or the ports, but the bird view does a very good job

Any tips for the beast tamer ( or any other ability to try to convince enemies units)? I've been already in events where the enemy has less than 10 hp and the best % rate I've seen is like 15%. Of course it fails and I loose that turn ( I use the chariot so it's not an issue really)

I heard that the best percent chance is still around ~33%

And even to get that chance it takes

a) under 10% HP

b) target unit is not next to any of his comrades

c) the recruiting unit is right next to target unit

But that said I haven't been successful yet (trying to recruit lizardman)

Got this on Switch Friday night. Time to finally do the Law route I never ended up doing on PSP back in the day.

That first Nybeth battle, managed to do it first time, Mighty Impact skill + 2H Swords equipped on Denam are the way to go. Was crit after crit doing 180+ damage on Nybeth, didn't take long for him to give up.

I wonder if Basiscape will do a new OST release for this new arrangement of the music, some of it's really good, some I definitely prefer the PSP version more (Warren Report sounds off to me).

Oohhh the distance make sense, since it doesn't have a range I thought it can be used anyhwere.. Also two things

1. The game is not battery consuming: Energy was out since yesterday because a car crash with an electrical post and played around 3 hours. Went from 92 to 68 only.

2. Nobody told me there were ninjas! Immediately changed Denam to one. Still find funny that in a clearly european fantastical world they went with it "Yes sire, the olde warriors with blades that strike thy enemies from the shadows, the ninjas"

Spent all the day playing, a lot of things were learnt and some questions arised

1. Finally managed to capture a cockatrice! And man the monsters are overall very strong, it becomes my main tank now with the high mobilty and area attacks
2. Learnt that items are very important, started to use them and the ones that weakens the defence of the enemy is very useful. Just use the beast tamer to throw them.
3. Managed to get ninjas and dragoons. The 2 weapon strike is very good even with tanky enemies, turned Denam into a killing machine. Dragoon helps a lot against the monsters
4. Crafting is also nice, The +1 in legs equipment that gives 1 movement or jump made the battles faster

And questions

1. Are the woods a sidequest? Unlocked that and finished all the maps just to be sent to the main map.
2. Does the branching story affects the ending or the missions played? Finished the battle in the fortress with the pirates and the wizard dude just went magic blazing into the enemies and of course died. Looking at the warren report now I see there are two branches. I'm assumign the second one is if the wizard lives but don't know how it affects

Still failed to recruit beasts thus far!

One more thing about recruiting, I believe the target unit's "loyalty level" is also crucial to the chance. I believe its checked via doing the "more info" thing over the unit's name in status screen. I was trying to recruit some golems but their loyalty report read like they were highly loyal, so my beast tamer was still seeing `0`s even when the other conditions were met 🤔

Next level is back at Quadriga fortress to recruit some wild-lookin bro. Enemies took a sudden level jump from 12 => 16, higher than my party which is the first time that happened. Generally I have rolled into battles at or above the enemy by 1 or 2 levels.

1. Are the woods a sidequest? Unlocked that and finished all the maps just to be sent to the main map.
2. Does the branching story affects the ending or the missions played?
1. Woods are one of the optional "side dungeon" for recruiting, material farming
2. Story brranch does affect a) path thru the game, b) units available to recruit, c) ending (sort of, chapter 4 I believe will largely follow the same path regardless of main choices, but just that some dialog and the ending will differ)

If you don't kill either of Ganpp's Gryphons, they will all join you (just get Ganpp to critical HP on one of the later fights with him), don't know if you were aware of that.

Finished chapter 2 now. That last battle against Vice 1 on 1 was interesting, but nothing ninja Denam couldn't handle. So far I learnt sometimes it's just easier to go for the boss directly, there are some bosses like mages where units with high mobility like monsters, ninjas or Canopus can just go and kill them in 2 or 3 turns.

If you don't kill either of Ganpp's Gryphons, they will all join you (just get Ganpp to critical HP on one of the later fights with him), don't know if you were aware of that.
Mhm well a little late for that, but going to try to get one in the forest..

Also is it my imagination or archers become less usefull the more the game advance? I remember having 2 in chapter 1 and they really help to bring down most enemies, in chapter 2 I just keep one as the damage input was reduced almost in 30%. Now In chapter 3 I'm seeing just 60 -80 hp on weaker units and below 50 for everything else (and with upgraded two handed bows). I'm really considering benching the archer for other class

Bob-omb

I've seen this be a common observation from Reborn players.

They are definitely weaker than previous games, I feel that as well in late chapter 2.

I can still rely on them for some chippy damage on softer enemies, and the occasional Tremendous Shot to finish off a near-death enemy from afar.

Going forward tho, we might need to think about also deploying them in conjunction with Debuffers like a Terror Knight who can bring down enemy defenses 🤔

Archers were rather OP in the PSP version, I recall. Sounds like they really went out of their way to nerf them then.

Do you both have Canopus as an axe/archer/caster or something else entirely? I usually have him use the axe to finish off enemies and spells/archer attacks for long distance. I think he's the most adaptable unit in the game, is he still good all the way through the game?

Denam with 2H Swords + Mighty Impact skill has been decimating everything in his path so far. And is it just me or is Parry happening more in this version? At least my units seem to be doing a rather good job of parrying a lot of enemy unit attacks so far.

It's weird in the sense that two units in the same class apparently have different resistance to arrows. I noticed it in one of the fisrt battles of Ch 3. There are 2 mages and one of them was taking around 120 hp and the other around 70. After that I check the damage preview everytime and even two of the same tanky units goes from 10 to 40 hp of damage (both from back damage).

Regarding Canopus yeah he is very versatile and I kept him with the axe / crossbow combo, just changed his affinity to Ice so he deals more damage with the ice axe finisher.

Just finished chapter 1 and yeah archers have mostly fallen off the damage cliff. They’re still useful though since they have a large range and are mostly unconcerned with line of sight issues, I find them good at finishing off units who are at critical health.

As for the rest of the game, despite have three revisions I still feel like there are some things that need to be better explained. Elements don’t actually seem to have a huge effect as far as I can tell; the combat breakdown could be better. I also have no idea what any of the buffs/debuffs do. I can make some assumptions about ‘spellshot’ but it would be nice to have spelled out.

is the incest a thing? Like I thought Vyce was speaking of jelously when he mentions the only man Catiua notices is Denam, but then chapter 3 starts with her getting mad of how he puts more effort on his battle than her, and the after capturing the fort there's clearly a "Folgers Moment™" between the 2 before she leaves...

Balanced to whom?? I understand they don't want to give you that much advanced but when

fighting Xaebos, which is already a Knight so he is tanky AF, and the the battle starts and see he is prebuffed in attack and defense I was like "no way, I'll do this tomorrow". add to injury that he has golems with a LOT of HP. Matsuno failed me

Yeah Matsuno is trolling with some of the maps having enemies made up of golems, knights, terror knights, octopus etc all buff up like crazy and mages chow down those leaves until their bellies (and MP bars) are full on the other side of the map.
Plus healers spamming Major Heal or the more advanced heal spells and almost fully restoring enemies, means that archer attacks (before your melee units get there) are just chipping away at enemies who get a heal spam and are fully restored by the time you make it to them with your melee units.

I guess it kind abalance with the fact that a lot of the bosses are mages or no heavy armored clasess, I had some battles where just deicided to use Canopus and a cocaktrice to fly to the boss and kill them in less than 3 turns

Updating:

defeat Xaebos in my first try. Almost lost one guy but Canopus saved the day with his axe finisher. Items saved the day as the one that weakens the defense worked very well on Xaebos

I really find interesting the script and how Denam's actions (at least in the route I'm playing) are contradictory. He can go preaching arround all about being free from conflict and fight against their leaders which cause this, but him leaving a trail of corpses doesn't help much to his point, and that not only enemies but civilians tell him so. And he doesn't even hesitate

Denam "you can free yourself if you leave your honor behind, let us fight together against the real enemy"
Enemy "uh.... no"
Denam "THEN YOU DIE BY MY BLADE"

Also loved that they don't do the usuaal friendship /good person dialogue, Denam sometimes fire some shots
necromancer daughter "YOU KILLED MY MOTHER"
Denam "she was raising corpses from the fucking grave! you wanted me to praise her??"

That
Oz and Ozma fight was brutal, again I don't understand why they prebuff the bosses, it's too much advantage to the enemy. Still managed to clear without losing any unit, but at the end I was with only 4 units standing. Also archer girl (forgot her name) manage to scale up again in damage to non knights units.

Two thing

1. I'm getting Thanos vibes here lol:
3 out of 5 bosses: "Denam of Golyat, YOU WILL PAY FOR WHAT YOU DID!"
Denam "I don't even know you"
And then I check the warren report and it's something like "Boss' son went to fight agains the resistance, While he managed to escape, he died attacked by bandids. Then Boss decided to become a headhunter and kill the hero of Golyat responsable for this. He lost his life in a skirmish against Denam".

2. I'm going blind here and I can't shake the feeling that I've killed pretty much all units that could join my army.

As of early chapter 3 (Law) Canopus is carrying, yeah.

I've got him with a ranged weapon (bow or crossbow) along with a dagger.

Why the dagger? I find that the finisher has a 3 square range and the wind element. Very useful to polish off casters. Also I believe daggers are lighter, so lower RT?

His job is pretty much advance scout and squishy-killer. I try to have him collect whatever cards he can on the way. Getting the MP-restore cards in particular seem useful since it lets him recharge his MP for specials faster.

===

My Denam tho, as a Rune Fencer, feels kinda weak with 1h sword and bow combo.

I should reclass I think! I like his utility as a caster/healer tho 🤔

===

Progress:

Start of chapter 3 Law.

Haven't lost a battle, but a handful of incapacitations. And it's getting hairier with the pre-juiced casters and bosses that pack finishers.

Also at this point feels a bit like you really have to grind at least a little. Eg, rolling into the castle at the end of Chapter 2 and suddenly enemies are two levels above mine 😦

I mite have to detour into Phorampa woods before I embark on the first story battle. Build up some levels, try to catch me a swordmaster, hopefully get some materials for crafting better rings 🤞

I didn't knew the game meant to literally do some things

Fighting to save the old man in the island and he asks "spare the woman" and I thought it was going to be a cutscene at the end, but no , she died. Finally gave to my curiosity and check a faq and they meant to leave it under 10 hp.

Same with the battles before, in the castle when Denam said he would go unarmed and alone they meant it, no wonder the people were like "you said you came to talk but you are here armed and with an army.". Welp more people dead under Denam's blade....

Ok so I believe you are on the Chaos route (someone correct me if wrong) ... So yea, tata to a bunch of the recruitables 😆

But nothing a Lil trip on the ol Wheel of Fate can't fix (after you beat Chapter 4)!!

Well

suddenly at least 2 people joined now so I think thats good, but yeah as mentioned in my previous post I killed another recruitable because I was expecting a cutscene when a character ask you to spare the boss, and the mission clearly ask to defeat her, and well a lot of defeats here tends in the not generic bosses using the gem to escape, but that was not the case here :S

Also advancing more story, I thought the Dark Knights were supposed to be this superior force that nobody wanted to mess with, but when Denam goes to fight them to rescue his not-sister( thank god the incest angle was cleared up) even he comments how useless they are, and that they didn't even knew an attack was launched to the castle despite having a fake army attack in the fronts. Hell one of the dark knights kills one of his own men because he doesn't know how to use the guns lol. I just really didn't expect Catiua was going to commit suicide but, uh I guess that's Matsuno for you

Hmm ... Well, let's just say Hope you take the opportunity to revisit some key moments and conversations :3

On the Dark Knights, while they are strong, I never considered an indomitable force. More like the "Special Forces" or maybe even "The Suicide Squad" of the Lodis Empire.

Top rate for their region, but they are not a huge force, and they operate strategically and kinda low-key.

Also got to consider other regions have their own champions. Like the Zenobian contingent are ass-kickers in their own right. Lancelot (the "good" one) himself had basically international fame for his prowess at that point. And we players all know Canopus is the most powerful bird boi on the planet!

By Chapter 4, we have basically assembled "The Valerian All Stars" (+1 cheeky witch, if u find her) so I am not surprised at how formidable your Chaos-route army has become!

I don't think it's because the army is strong (its a part) but looking at the events, the first black night (the shirtless one fought in a swamp before the bridge) apparently didn't care to alert the castle, so the moment you arrive of course everyone is surprised, and even then Lanselot is like "oh shi, let's get out " even though Denam was just with a group of 11 people (the rest of the army was faking the attack at the front) if anything it shows that they are incompentent, which doesn't makes sense in how the Duke was afraid of them at the beginning. Also the fact that Vice of all people managed to ambush Lanselot and actually was very close to kill him made me think it's more a reputation thing

I'm just over 10 hours in, completed the first few battles of chapter 2. The gameplay side of this has not evolved in the way I’d hoped. Map design seems very basic and other than the early necromancer fight I’ve mostly been fine ignoring a handful of secondary systems and just grinding out battles in a brain dead manner.

I assume it gets deeper eventually, and I know there are other classes but I’ve not gotten the option to change to any of those or hire anyone in those classes. I really appreciate the story being not campy crap but the gameplay is surprisingly bland so far.

But I hear you, sometimes it's just "for the sake of the Plot!!!". I just watched Wakanda Forever and kinda felt that way about the latter half myself.

It will get hairier as the opponents start getting more (sometimes unfair) advantages.
But I'll be curious to hear how the tactical experience and the challenge evolve for you.

By first couple battles of Chapter 3, I also have not lost a battle yet. I do some relatively light "grinding" tho, ie training battles here and there and a couple dives into the Phorampa forest thus far.

But my general strat of "tanks hold the line, Canopus/archers/ninjas sneak to back and squish casters, breach n heal" has held steady.

I overall like the "union level" mechanic, tho it results in walking into some fights with enemies 1 or 2 levels higher.

W/o that, my OCD tendencies tend to burn me out on The Grind in rpgs resulting in never finishing many games (sry, Three Houses)!

I’m going to try and stick with it. I’ve gotten a decent rhythm going where individual battles don’t take a ton of time and party management is pretty minimal since not a lot is changing about my units.

I just feel a bit miffed since I could be halfway through an Advance Wars game right now and loving every minute of squeezing those maps for positional advantage, planning turns in advance, and cursing the ai for exposing weaknesses in my line. All of which hasn’t yet happed in Tactics Ogre (outside of the necromancer fight) or isn’t a concern since units wont ever actually die because three turns is way too long in a game with interleaved turn orders.

At chapter 4 I can say that's not going to happen. And not in a bad way, this and Advance Wars have different ways of how they interpret the strategy part, and this is a updated port of a port of a snes game so that's going to show both in the map design and the combat, which is why they start to prebuff bosses in chapter 3 to avoid steamrolling everything. Overall for me I think it's better becasue I don't have to manage a gazillion systems like Disgaea. Just equip items and skills according to your gameplay and 90% of the time it will work, which also gives a lot of freedom as in you can't choose a wrong class.

The strategy here is more simple because the AI is also simple and sometimes even the game favors to avoid the main combat area and just go for the boss. I've been in maps where I pretty much send anyhting weak to the front so the enemy focus on them while the rest of the party just go wild against the boss, and they all will win the same exp
