The map can be a huge issue in these games. Use a guide if you get stuck because of the map, don't feel ashamed about it.I am so excited for SmT V!!!
It's one of the first few games that made me interested in the Switch! I can't believe it's so close to release now!
I have SmT4 and Apocalypse on DS but I'm ashamed to say I didn't even finish the first one because I just can NOT navigate the map. But I did put quite a few hours into it and I really enjoyed it so I'm not too worried about not enjoying V when it comes out haha.
I'll get back to IV some day.. ahaha.. backlog
At least one of them is completely new.It would have been nice if previous DLC demons were included in the base games and any DLC demons were completely new. Oh well.
There's still some weirder or more grotesque stuff debuting in V (Lahmu, the Manananggal), but you kind of hit the nail on the head with the gacha waifus observation. There's a reason many of those are DLC. A lot of the new humanoid designs in this entry are just not it for me, and I say this as someone who isn't necessarily opposed to post-Kaneko designs. The archangels, Merkabah and Lilith in SMT IV were fantastic over-the-top weirdness.I'd love to be educated by series veterans on how these re-designs compare to older SMT. From my limited exposure to the most infamous examples from past games there appears to be some conscious de-weirdening going on, with more humanoid creatures than I expected to see. The faces of the DLC are indistinguishable from gacha waifus! Many of the demons still aren't mainstream material, but where are the eldritch dick monsters?

why not?Are we seriously going to have a dick shaped demon in the Switch? Right in front of my salad?
Why shouldn’t dicks be represented? What has this poor dick done to you?Are we seriously going to have a dick shaped demon in the Switch? Right in front of my salad?
will I miss too much if I never played any shin megami tensei before?

Even compared to previous humanoid designs, stuff like Fionn mac Cumhaill just doesn't quite cut it when we have really enduring designs like Setanta to live up to.
Tbh the new Artemis design is way better than the trash that was Diana.
I don't understand how anyone can defend that design. It's some of the worst Kaneko designs I've seen.
We still have our weird demon design from Doi.
People want weird Doi designs. Me: ".... Did you see Manananggal?"
That's a new one? Hm. I give it a high 8 on grotesqueness, but low scores for erring towards the side of smooth shiny sexiness in the art.
I don't know how far into IV you got, but there's a lategame sidequest that gives you the ability to fly on the world map.I am so excited for SmT V!!!

I raise you human form Jinana from Digital Devil Saga, although I'm not entirely sure if Kaneko actually designed her or not, because the only "art" of her is her model from the game.Tbh the new Artemis design is way better than the trash that was Diana.

I think you have to ignore a loooooooooot of creepy to find something "sexy" in there. ^^
It's rad! I hope we get more Filipino stuff included in SMT in the future, it's often pretty wild and could open the door for some really cool design concepts.People want weird Doi designs. Me: ".... Did you see Manananggal?"
It's already in a bunch of games on Nintendo platforms! I think it's in Strikers. It's not subtle either, it's often accompanied with dick jokes. Are we seriously going to have a dick shaped demon in the Switch? Right in front of my salad?
It's in Strikers and even in a sidequest where you have to fight the "Throbbing King of Desire"I wouldn't mind Diana if it was a little more stylised and less flesh-coloured. I think she looks sort of like a P2 era Persona in terms of her silhouette and something could have been done with that. I also have to admit I'm quite forgiving of more bizarre designs in this series than I am the ones they play straight as 'normal' (if oddly proportioned) waifu bait.

The games are usually standalone and only share thematic connections (sometimes there are more explicit connections between titles but 5 is not one of those).will I miss too much if I never played any shin megami tensei before?
You'll be fine. If anything this one is looking like a good place to start, which IV already was and I think this one seems to be incorporating a lot more of that.will I miss too much if I never played any shin megami tensei before?
I mean I love it, Im just surprised it’s so right on your face. And you could even link the open mouth to the kink where they split open certains parts of the penis, or all of it.
Not only on your Switch, but also on your Super Nintendo! Are we seriously going to have a dick shaped demon in the Switch? Right in front of my salad?

If it's like previous SMT games, it's story based, so we'll be traveling between locations based on that. It's not open world it seems, there are sidequests, and maybe there's a hub? There's a story location that would fit as a hub but we don't know for sureI'm still trying to figure out the gameplay loop in this one -- like every gameplay video I see is the MC wandering around ruined Tokyo, getting into battles. But that's it. Is it open world? Do we do quests? Is there a hub or anything? The trailers make it seem really cool but I don't really know how it actually plays outside of being a turn-based RPG with monster catching.
The main loop of mainline SMT is going from dungeon to dungeon, while collecting and fusing demons. The world map merely connects these dungeons together. I guess they haven't shown many dungeon videos.I'm still trying to figure out the gameplay loop in this one -- like every gameplay video I see is the MC wandering around ruined Tokyo, getting into battles. What I’ve seen of the DLC has left me cold tbh. There are hundred of demons to fuse as is, what’s a couple more? The Mitama stuff is going to help with grinding a bit, but if you don’t like to grind too much, you can simply play on easier difficulties. Now, if there are meaty questlines tied to those new demons, things can get interesting but it doesn’t look like it.
it'll probably be similar to the Apocalypse DLC quests for Mephisto/Cleo/Artemis so a decently long quest segment of 20 minutes or so followed by a boss fight and then unlocking the demon for fusion. The Fiends/demifiend is probably longer for sure, since its a 9 boss gauntlet into the demifiend.Maybe I'm being too optimistic but I think the quests for the DLC demons might be meaty with the way they are describing them.

Based on official descriptions Fiends will appear periodically throughout the game starting from the middle of the game. Fiends are non-rematchable, but Demifiend is rematchable.
Cleopatra and Mephisto are rematchable and are recommended to be fought in the end-game. Artemis is rematchable and recommended to be fought in the mid-game. Both Cleo and Mephisto seem to be specifically progression gated as is Artemis, but the Fiends seem to just be a recommendation.
