Chopper absolutely should be a puppetI'm just kinda worried how they'd adapt Chopper.. or Franky for that matter. Not that we're anywhere close to any of those two, just wondering. Or rather how to do Chopper that he doesn't end up as nightmare fuel
keep watchingI never read or watched the anime. So I had no expectations for the live series. After watching the first 20 minutes, it looks a show made by a bunch of cosplayers...
Fwiw the first episode starts slow but I also do think the show might have a hard time getting a ton of new fans, it’s unapologetically live action One Piece and it still has growing pains for a first season and that includes getting the tone rightI never read or watched the anime. First 100 chapters are free on the Shonen Jump app right now so you're in luckI never have watched a single episode or read the Manga but eh yeah this convinced me. I guess I like One Piece now. Definitely going to look into the Manga.

Thank you. Though if I watch the Anime I would probably just go by episode with ignoring fillers. Already found some lists.one of us one of us
If you ever decide to watch the anime you should look into One Pace
Trust us when we say, go with One PaceThank you. Though if I watch the Anime I would probably just go by episode with ignoring fillers. Already found some lists.
Ok thanks! Though I think I‘ll stick reading the Manga.Trust us when we say, go with One Pace
The problem with the OP anime as it goes along is 5-10 minutes per 20 minute episode dedicated to extra flashbacks to prior scenes from the last few episodes, or to reaction shot after reaction shot after reaction shot. The anime doesn't actually have a lot of traditional filler in the way Bleach or Naruto do.
Manga is still the best version so you can’t go wrong with that.Though I think I‘ll stick reading the Manga
The show was originally planned to be 10 episodes, and you can feel where the cuts/rewrites/condensing happened to get it to 8 episodes.Ive been a fan of One Piece since the early 2000s, but admittedly i havent seen this older material in years.
Honestly i love the show so far (on Ep 4). It really feels like its an amazing translation of it.
I do think the pacing may be a little too fast, but given the limits of its format i think its fine.
Honestly makes me wanna go back and reread these old chapters.
I can see how the cuts really hurt Arlong Park and Syrup Village. I respect the effort they put in it, but too much has honestly been lost so far. But i do love that:The show was originally planned to be 10 episodes, and you can feel where the cuts/rewrites/condensing happened to get it to 8 episodes.
I finished it yesterday and mostly enjoyed it. This is definitely a case of lowered expectations for an anime live action adaptation but you can tell they're trying their hardest to remain as faithful as possible to the source material while changing things where it makes sense. The show got better towards the end of the season, which was the most difficult thing to adapt, but the dialogue, acting and direction sadly remained a little stilted throughout. It's how you get scenes that are almost great like this one in Episode 7:
Emily does a great job here imo but the camera, direction and music doesn't do Iñaki any favours.
There's also several moments in this show where trimming the dialogue would have worked wonders, for example [Episode 6 spoilers] during Sanji's backstory where he finds out that Zeff ate his own leg. Sanji going "You ate it? You ate your own leg?" just feels unnecessary. I'm all for clarity in writing and this is somewhat of a nitpick but there's several moments like this where the show goes from earnest to a little bit too blunt. Which is weird because the show also knows when to be subtle, like that small joke hinting at Zoro having a terrible sense of direction.
Still, overall this turned out much better than I expected and I love that they're going with practical effects, actual sets and costumes whenever it makes sense. It helps a lot to ground the show and not make it look too much like a CG fest. It also seems to be a huge success so I hope they get to continue it.
A season 2 is gonna be tough though and I wonder how much of the original they plan to cover. S1 covers the first 95 chapters. Drum Island goes up to chapter 155, Arabasta up to chapter 218. They have several options here (longer season, two part season etc.) but Arabasta itself needs at the very least four long episodes, if not more.
I could see this, though only 2 eps for Marineford seems extremely short unless it's like these 1h+ long episodes.I saw this theorized list on Reddit, and it seems like a realistic path for future seasons.
Not as much happens in Marineford as you may think. Aside from characters stopping to exposition its a very quick and focused arc.I could see this, though only 2 eps for Marineford seems extremely short unless it's like these 1h+ long episodes.
Eh, Marineford lives and dies from the scale and all the moving parts. It's not enough to carry an entire season but it very much needs room to breathe and it's the one of the worst parts to condense for an adaptation like this. Not as much happens in Marineford as you may think. I definitely don't think Little Garden and Reverse Mountain need entire episodes to themselves; they could be trimmed down and give more screentime to Alabasta. There's way too much that happens between Luffy getting stabbed by Croc and the crew leaving, you would need at least one more episode. I'd make Alabasta 5 episodes, at least half of season 2.I can see how the cuts really hurt Arlong Park and Syrup Village. I respect the effort they put in it, but too much has honestly been lost so far. But i do love that:
Arlong is a grander scope villain now. That is a change i really respect.
Still from what Ive seen As far as adaptations go, its waaaaaaay better than that awful Episode of Nami special.

I wouldnt cut Little Garden, at least prior to combining Reverse Mountain and Whisky Peak. Those two could honestly be combined.I definitely don't think Little Garden and Reverse Mountain need entire episodes to themselves; they could be trimmed down and give more screentime to Alabasta. Hard to comment on the others because it very much feels like putting the cart before the horse lol
We know Season 1 was gonna be 10 episodes until (theorized) Cowboy Bebop's failure slashed some serious budgetting time. So we have more to play with than 8 episodes. Here's how I'd break it down, assuming they have to keep up with 8 episode seasons
S2 (Cut Little Garden, but meet Dorry and Broggy and throw some dinsoaurs in Whiskey Peak)
Ep 1 - Logtown
Ep 2 - Whiskey Peak
Ep 3 - Drum Kingdom
Ep 4 - Drum Kingdom
Ep 5 - Alabasta
Ep 6 - Alabasta
Ep 7 - Alabasta
Ep 8 - Alabasta
Post credits scene is the ship falling from the sky
S3 (I think Long Ring can be cut and replaced with an extra Skypeia episode if Oda tells them it wont be important later, but I'm assuming it will be)
Ep 1 - Jaya
Ep 2 - Jaya
Ep 3 - Skypeia
Ep 4 - Skypeia
Ep 5 - Skypeia
Ep 6 - Long Ring Long Land
Ep 7 - Water 7
Ep 8 - Water 7
Split Water 7 between 2 seasons. End on a cliffhanger of Usopp and Robin leaving the crew
S4
Ep 1 - Water 7
Ep 2 - Enies Lobby
Ep 3 - Enies Lobby
Ep 4 - Enies Lobby
Ep 5 - Thriller Bark
Ep 6 - Thriller Bark
Ep 7 - Sabaody
Ep 8 - Sabaody
End with Strawhats getting seperated
S5 (I think they will need one episode dedicated to the other strawhats after they get seperated)
Ep 1 - Amazon Lily
Ep 2 - The Other Strawhats Locations
Ep 3 - Impel Down
Ep 4 - Impel Down
Ep 5 - Marineford
Ep 6 - Marineford
Ep 7 - Marineford
Ep 8 - Luffy's flashback/Post Marineford
End with the timeskip

I don't think you cut it but heavily trim/combine its major story beats with Whiskey Peak. I'd do something like this:I wouldnt cut Little Garden, at least prior to combining Reverse Mountain and Whisky Peak. Those two could honestly be combined.
But Little Garden isnt just a fun location, its also where we get some of our strongest Baroque Works representation prior to the start of Alabasta, especially after Zoro wipes the floor with Whisky Peak.
I can see that sadly. Its probably why i also dont expect seasons to jump from Island to island so much.I don't think you cut it but heavily trim/combine its major story beats with Whiskey Peak. I'd do something like this:
Episode 1: Loguetown/Reverse Mountain
Episode 2: Laboon/Start of Whiskey Peak
Episode 3: Rest of Whiskey Peak/Little Garden mixed in
Episode 4: Drum Island 1
Episode 5: Drum Island 2
Episode 6-10: Alabasta
The story beats for Alabasta in that chart are fine for the most part, but with 5 episodes instead of 4 I'd have the last three episode look something like...
8: End on Luffy getting stabbed and left for dead in the desert
9: Straw Hats brawl in town square/search for bomb, Croc/Robin betrayal, Luffy returns and rematches Croc (merge Luffy vs. Croc round 2/3 like the movie did)
10: Continue Luffy vs Croc, beats Crocodile around 20-30 minute mark, 30 minutes for denouement/end on crew sailing with X on wrists
The good news with Alabasta is you only really need maybe half a dozen really good sets - the desert town, Crocodile's casino/lair, the palace exterior, and the temple are the big ones. Rest would be pretty simple sets like the saloon, the royal dining room, etc. and anything else can be shot in empty desert areas. I think future seasons would benefit from the Straw Hats staying in the same place for most of the season rather than bouncing around tons of islands like East Blue.
It's just the reality of the situation, even with the fuckton of money behind this show stuff has to be cut and rearranged, thankfully after season 1 I trust the writers to know what to focus on and what to rethink (but season 2 REALLY needs ten episodes so hopefully they get it)I can see that sadly. Its probably why i also dont expect seasons to jump from Island to island so much.
The different sets of season 1, flashbacks and all have been reported to what really cost a fortune for this production, nevermind how elaborate they may be.
Maybe they could combine elements of Drum with Little Garden so that the rest of the crew isnt just fighting rando mobs. Luttle Garden kinda sidelined Luffy and Sanji anyways.
Well, if the funds were there we could do all that. It is a tv show vs a movie. But well, funds certainly arent unlimited even with Shueisha backing most of this. It's just the reality of the situation, even with the fuckton of money behind this show stuff has to be cut and rearranged, thankfully after season 1 I trust the writers to know what to focus on and what to rethink (but season 2 REALLY needs ten episodes so hopefully they get it)
I always think of this comic for situations like this:
