My controller was finally delivered! It seems high quality so far and I especially like the feel of the rumble. Happy to finally play N64 games properly.

Speaking of, I’m playing Ocarina and DAMN. Jabu Jabu is a terrible dungeon. It’s ugly, every enemy is tedious and the escort mission stuff is obviously annoying. Everyone talks about the water temple but Jabu is bad! I don’t remember it being this way.

Finally got to try the controller out and although I don’t doubt many of the emulation complaints I can’t say I had a lot of issues playing. I did a triple jump immediately and got a few stars in Mario 64. Zelda I’d noticed had graphical issues before I even read impressions online but it played fine. The rumble made me laugh. It made me feel strangely nostalgic. I wouldn’t recommend the expansion pack to anybody not into Animal Crossing or not on a family plan, but so far I’m enjoying some of the games. My kid was oddly into Ristar which somehow I’d never tried. Maybe I’ll finally beat Phantasy Star 4 (I tell myself for the 10th time).

@Josh5890 a suggestion if I may, why don’t you add the current lineup cover pics for N64 and Genesis NSO to the OP? I also have the full announced upcoming games list for you too
Future N64 titles
  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
  • Mario Golf
  • Pokémon Snap
  • F-Zero X
  • Kirby 64: The Crystal Stars
  • Paper Mario
  • Banjo-Kazooie
  • Custom Robo (JP)
  • Custom Robo V2 (JP)

So on the topic what game from the list are you guys looking forward to/hoping is next? Probably Kirby 64 for me, it’s my fave Kirby game. Also curious to try Custom Robo… (also curious what third party surprises are in store)

F Zero X is the one I really, really want to be added next, but I'm also looking forward to Banjo Kazooie.

On the analog controls issue, I decided to play more of Yoshi's Story and Mario Kart 64 in portable mode and got on fine with them. If Yoshi needed more precise jumps it would probably be a bigger issue, but I've found it completely possible to adjust. I didn't notice much difference between playing with the 64 pad and the joycons in MK64, but some of that might be because I was playing as a less twitchy heavy character (Wario, of course).

You can preload (or preorder if you aren't part of the NSO Exp Pack) the Animal Crossing DLC now.

Between 8BitDo's M30 and RetroBit's controllers (Genesis or Saturn), which would be the better controller for the Genesis App?
I’ve been using the RetroBit USB version. The Genesis/Mega Drive 6 Button is a near identical copy of the original and has been working great. Z+C brings up the Suspend menu.

The USB version lacks a Home button so I need a different controller to exit the app; but it looks like Retrobit’s bluetooth version does include a Home button.

Well, duh.

You’rah Wario. You’rah gonna winnah!”

Do you think the NSO Expansion Pack video being the new most disliked video on Nintendo's Youtube Channel is thread-worthy?

No, not really, it’s not a viable metric and the ratio is similar to every other NSO video. Nintendo gauges off engagement not anonymous criteria

yeah, I figured as much, besides it barely exceeded Federation Force video and their channel grew A LOT since 2015...

Expansion Pass is more long term to Nintendo. People are mad now, but everyone's got a game they'll want to cause them to subscribed, and even then in time it'll have much more games that people will just subcribed.

Tho, i feel this expensive pass will just have more pay for the cheaper one then outright not subscribe to any

While not worthy of a thread I do think Nintendo will be taking the reaction seriously. I honestly think throwing in the Animal Crossing DLC was a last-minute decision to sweeten what they finally realised was a poor deal.

I am confident it'll become far better value for money as the months roll on, but early adopters aren't getting value for money with the emulation in its current state.

If it was $40 which is around what it costs in Japan I think people would be a lot less angry about it.

I also think they shoulda started off with more games. NES and SNES started off with around 20 each. We are starting off with 9 N64 games and 14 Genesis games. I sorta understand the N64 game launch numbers and given how iffy the emulation is it’s probably best they take their time with releasing them, but Genesis should have started with at least 20.

The issue is that the launch of the service is underwhelming at the price. Woulda made more sense for it be $40 at this price. If you’re gonna go up to $50 the launch needs to be more special.

I highly doubt Nintendo threw in Animal Crossing at the last minute - especially given they used the AC Direct as the means to announce the price and release date of the update, which suggests months of planning, given the proximity of the releases. Don't forget that they want their old games to maintain some monetary value and that their ultimate aim is to turn their subscription business into a higher yield revenue stream. From Nintendo's perspective, their old games are worth that - and then there's also the extra licensing deals to pay for. If the Goldeneye stuff turns out to be true, then they have actually put some time, effort, and money into securing more games for the service (which the presence of Sega, Microsoft, Konami and Capcom owned games in the expansion pass should also attest to).

I actually suspect that the N64 emulation was pushed out the door with some issues purely because Nintendo wanted the higher sub out there ahead of the AC expansion, and the AC expansion itself is the more important product for Nintendo.

Thanks, I'll probably go bluetooth.

Are there any tear down videos of the new N64 controller that also compare the internals to the original?

Yep. I timestamped it so it starts at the comparison.

I think that if N64 launched with 3 more games, one of which being Banjo, and OoT didn’t have the issues it does then people would have gotten over the price pretty quickly.

I also agree that AC DLC’s inclusion probably wasn’t last minute, they probably decided on it as soon as they started making costly 3rd party deals.
I think they can turn opinions around if we get some good stuff on the first update and some emulation improvements.
Yep. I timestamped it so it starts at the comparison.

Thanks. I feel really dumb that I didn’t guess where the rumble motor was placed correctly… it’s like the most obvious place it could have been placed.

Anybody getting crashes when playing Ocarina of Time through NSO?

I ask because, in some of the comments on articles about the NSO video now being Nintendo's most disliked of all time, I'm seeing some claims that a) performance is terrible and b) crashes are a regular occurrence.

The only crashes I have actually seen are the ones speedrunners are causing when they do something that would crash an N64 too. And then a lot of people are basing their opinion on those videos rather than actually playing the thing for themselves, of course.

I've played for a while now, should be heading to Water Temple next. The game has not crashed a single time. Regarding the performance, it is what it is and has always been, although I'm used to playing the PAL version so it feels like an improvement.

The only issue I've paid attention to is that something about the graphics is occasionally off with e.g. some fog effects and reflective items. It's not something I'd pay attention to if I hadn't played the game before though.

Of course people are basing it on the media put out there. The idea that you can't have an opinion unless you put down a bunch of money on an expensive subscription is as absurd as it always is.

That's not what I'm saying, I'm saying that someone saying the emulator is crap because a glitch causes it to crash and then aping that is silly.

Of course you can base other things on the media out there, such as the fog problem, the Invisiboo problem, latency tests, etc, but people are laughing at how it crashes, and you have to actively go out your way to force a crash that would crash an N64 too. You then have actual journalists parroting how the thing crashes a lot, when it's just not true.

Nobody is saying you can't have an opinion without paying for the service - more that, recycling claims of crashes without firsthand experience isn't necessarily trustworthy.

Right - this was the commonality I'd noticed in the videos of the game crashing. Often it's because exploits have been used to engineer the scenario. I was just curious if there are instability problems with certain games, because I haven't used Ocarina much myself.

Yes, I only played the opening ten minutes but the fog rendering was noticeable given I have strong memories of the game. And the issues later in the game (like the Water Temple scene) are well documented.

The fog issue seems to be common across the emulator, and so may be the result of a deliberate choice to minimise fog, or as part of an attempt to increase draw distance (personally I think this choice pays off in Mario Kart 64 and Star Fox 64). The issue with Ocarina is that the fog rendering is an aesthetic choice, and so the game does look off in its current iteration.

I've tried several games now and here are my thoughts.

Dr. Mario 64: Never played this one before. I had zero issues with this one outside of green text on white background displaying bad on my TV, but this was bad color settings on my TV since they display fine on the undocked Switch. As someone who played Dr. Mario NES a lot, I have no complains.

Star Fox 64: Played an entire run until I lost all my lives (in the second-to-last level) and everything here went well. Button placement is perfect and didn't notice any graphical issues.

Mario Kart 64: Button placement is fine since this game doesn't require many buttons. While the game itself looks great I did notice some sliiiight lag that made the controls feel a bit weird, but I got used to it.

Super Mario 64: I did notice some input lag here and it took a while to get used to it, but once that happened, game plays great.

Ocarina of Time: Input lag is clearly noticeable here and the fog not displaying properly is quite obvious. Button placement is weird and takes a while to get used to it, and while it's fine on the more "peaceful" moments of the game it gets a bit awkward in boss fights when you have to switch weapons quickly and such. I can't blame people for complaining on this one, it's probably the most high-profile game in the collection and the one where the emulation issues jump out the most.

Will play the other four games soon.

There are definitely issues with this collection and there's a lot of room for improvement on Nintendo's part. Personally I say button remapping and the graphical glitches in OoT should be top priority (don't know how much can be done to fix input lag), but nothing I've seen so far makes these games unplayable.

Thanks for posting this - and I think this is broadly what the issue is. One of the most iconic and popular games Nintendo could release happens to be the one that makes the emulator's shortcomings stand out in sharp relief, and that's frustrating and hopefully something that will be improved upon.

Agreed on Star Fox 64 - I did a run last week and it was excellent. Haven't tried the Mario titles outside of Mario Kart 64, though I can't say I noticed input lag in that (I might not be very sensitive to it - I did notice it in Ocarina).

7 hours in and zero crashes or frame drops.

The media that is put out there is done in bad faith and with the purpose to mislead or incite people into anger. I wonder what else that sounds like.

People can form all the opinions they want based on the media they consume. But pretending that we can’t scrutinize the context of media put out there is also absurd.

You know, it’d be hilarious if we thought was a long distance update list with the 9 titles announced was actually just the November/December release schedule N64 wise

OoT not letting you use all your items without weird button holds is especially strange since they already had a working layout on the Wii U, which has an identical number of buttons.

I believe you can. The right stick should be the C Buttons like on the Wii U and Wii

They opted for a generalized layout that lets you hit all the C buttons without touching the stick if you want. Wii and Wii U mapped at most three C buttons to modern buttons, leaving at least one button stranded on the stick.

Giving the hold button for all four so you could press C-up without the stick took away C-right as a standard binding.

Played a crap ton over the weekend.

Super Mario 64: I am having more fun with this game then I was with 3D All Stars and I 100% believe that it was the controller. GOAT game.

Yoshi's Story: I actually never played the game all the way through so I finally crossed that off my bucket list. It was pretty easy like others have said, but that vertical level with the slinky characters (or whatever you call them) was very frustrating. Shorter game like others have said. Would have been perfect as a weekend rental in the late 90's early 2000's.

Mario Kart 64: I think my skills diminished because getting gold in 150 CC was hardly a shoe in. Still had a great time. Before MK8, this was my favorite Mario Kart game of all time.

Dr. Mario 64- Dr. Mario has never really been my jam. I played a couple levels of this game but got board real fast lol. This would have been a title where if I bought as a kid I probably would have been disappointed haha. Still nice to have in the collection.

Star Fox 64- Still and will probably always be a top 5 all time game for me. It actually took some readjustment on my part with aiming but now I am well back in my groove. I will say that save states makes it a little nicer as far as going for the medals is concerned. Before you would have to play through the game again for a chance. Now I can restart the level without having to lose a life. So far I only have 5/15 medals.

Mario Tennis- Simply but fin. I've only done tournament play so far. Hopefully Nintendo adds an SP version that gives us the Gameboy content.

Sin & Punishment- Besides Winback this was the only game on the app that I have never played. Only got to play a couple of levels but it is fun. Hoping to finish a run tonight

I haven't touched Zelda or Winback yet. I have my hands in a bunch of games at the moment and I'd rather put my full attention into these when the time comes.

You didn’t do all the routes on Yoshi?

I still cannot comprehend how they decided to launch this without the option to remap buttons. The camera in Mario 64 really messes with me, even 5 hours into the game I can't get used to it. They should give us the ability to remap the buttons per game, I really need inverted camera control.

And the borders are an eyesore, I can't stand them.

For real, I do not understand the mandatory boarders on NSO apps... who looked at that and said "Ah, that's it! Perfect."?

These are two issues all four emulators have and they are two issues which really shouldn't be issues in 2021. That's why I worry Nintendo won't change them in the N64 app - sure, NES especially has very simple controls, but that's been out for 3 years and they haven't bothered to add button remapping there. There's clearly greater need for button remapping with a controller as bizarre and as proportionally more complex as the N64 controller, but it's also a basic feature which should be present in Nintendo's emulators by now. And, naturally, the option to toggle the borders off is an easy fix which should be there across the board.

I can live with the boarders, even if they suck. Not having button mapping as an option sucks. It makes the og N64 controller practically a must.

The borders should either give me a true black option or heck, give me some themed borders like on the mini at least.

BUT, I want manuals the most. Especially older games, the manual was pretty much the tutorial and story/lore dump. The Wii U and 3DS have manual support in game.

Yes to all three things. The holy trinity of things that need improving.

NES games in particular can be baffling without the manual.

The thing that baffles me the most is the static P1 icon in the top left that‘s always there, even when playing a single player game. They really need to get rid of that, especially now that they’re selling devices with OLED-screens. It serves no purpose for single player games and for multiplayer they could just include it on the start menu or something. I already made my profile picture as dark as possible, but that bright white border still sticks out.

Blown through 8 of the Genesis/Mega Drive games now. Feels nice to have good emulated versions of these games just ready to go whenever.

Forgot to share this here; may be potentially interesting in regards to N64 NSO’s future lineup.

It doesn’t make Animal Forest a guarantee for the service, but it’s a good argument supporting it at least.

Even if it happens, that game doesn't have any non-Japanese languages supported, right? So it'll most likely be exclusively added to the Japanese NSO even if it's a thing, like the Fire Emblem SNES games were.

Or maybe there's an official and never released english translation

I would play the fuck out of N64 Animal Crossing back to back with New Horizons.

EDIT: By the way, i remember Pokémon Stadium 2 also using the rtc, right? Unless it depended on the Game Boy cart connected in the transfer pack, but i don't think so.

This is interesting. It looks like they've experimented with features which aren't being used for anything right now - including the expansion pak. MVG has a new video out which I'm not able to watch/listen to yet, but it sounds like his argument/analysis is that the reason we have issues with N64 emulation now is because Nintendo are using an over-arching emulator for all the games rather than packaging an emulator with each ROM. I need to watch the video, like I said, but I'm curious as to how much difference that would make - unless Nintendo manually adjusted the releases in the Wii era? Or manually adjusted some releases? Given the volume of VC games released, I find it hard to believe they did more than tweak individual games.
