Getting started with Metroid 1 and 2, via Planets and AM2R! Having a great time. I've already previously finished AM2R, so I went with Fusion difficulty, this time around. It's hard. Arachnus kicked my ass a handful of times, before I was finally able to take him down. I love the fact that bosses actually become Core-X upon being killed. So much love and detail poured into this game (not just by DoctorM64 himself, but also the community that have subsequently taken to updating the game in his stead).

I will not be keeping track of my earned Energy Tanks, since I'm not entering for the raffle prizes anyway. It'd be very weird if I did that. I'm just here for the badges, and to replay some of my favorite games!

Commenting to say YES PLEASE we want Other M badges. I still need to play that one!
would be happy to have the other m badges, even if they aren't mandatory. was gonna play for the ridley thing anyway tbh
Curse you both... that means I'll have to replay Other M, if I want to earn every badge! 😂 It will be done. I'll add them at some point within the next few days.

I 100% finished Metroid Prime with both items and scans! Had a blast playing through the game, it’s a timeless masterpiece that remains thoroughly engaging throughout. Astounding level design, an amazing world, and gameplay that’s just so fun and compelling.

I have two pictures here for my in game collection and mission complete screen so that should be every Metroid Prime badge @Aurc .

Well done, @xghost777! I've awarded you all of the relevant badges, and added your Energy Tank count to post #6. Congrats!

(It's so cute that you own a little Iroha Tamaki plush, btw! 🥲)

Decided to go for all of them after all. Prime really good looking game, I remember it being unreal in 2002. Anyone have screenshot tips for Wii?

I started Metroid Prime 2! I have a lot fondness in my heart for this game too as I remember it being one of the first games I really anticipated. There was a Nintendo Power thing for new subscribers where you could get a demo disc for the game. I still wanted one as a current subscriber so I figured I’d call and ask. They had me make sure I had a handful of GameCube games first somehow and then they sent me a copy. Was a neat demo that rearranged a few rooms in the game to get you to the Space Pirates base quickly. I played through it a few times at least.

I’ve only just defeated the Bomb Guardian so I haven’t even made it to Dark Aether yet. While I’ve probably only played it a time or two less than Prime, this game isn’t burned into my memory quite the same way even if I remember some rooms and the broad beats. I’m kind of glad because while I flew through Prime and had a blast doing so, this replay so far more resembles the more cautious exploration I love from the series where I’m soaking in the sights a bit more and being more mindful of enemies. While the first game had static weather, I liked in the Temple Grounds at least you could see the sky shift with Dark Aether storm clouds rolling in for a bit. Such a cool touch! Looking forward to playing more later tonight!

Amazing write-up, Irene! I had no idea you were such a massive Echoes fan. Cool! I love reading about your passion for it. I think Sanctuary Fortress is definitely up there among the best areas featured in the Prime Trilogy, if not simply the best area, period. When you mention Maridia's theme playing in the lower part of Torvus Bog, you mean the rendition of Lower Brinstar, right? So good. I think Lower Brinstar (and all associated variants) is my favorite Metroid track, though it certainly has a ton of great competition. There are still themes from Super that have yet to be remixed in subsequent games, with the triumphant Crateria theme and Lower Maridia being the main two I'd love to see brought back (maybe in Prime 4?)

Echoes used to be in my top 5 all-time favourite games, actually. When it came out, I couldn't believe how good it was - after Final Fantasy IX and Wind Waker, it was so cool how a game with barely any story could hit me as hard. But that's the power of Metroid, they're such GAMES, that takes the control away form you for maybe 5-6 minutes in total over the entire journey. But still, they manage to invoke powerful emotions.

Yeah, I meant the Lower Brinstar area. So chill.

The skyboxes in Echoes really adds to the vibe. I love being in that glass tunnel in Temple Grounds and seeing this enormous vista. Prime 1 always felt so strangely boxed, so it's cool that Echoes adds in scope in such a way. I know some people think it made no sense for Sanctuary to have a city below it, but I love it.

I have a lot of good things to say about Metroid Prime, but I think the best part of the game is the combination of how effective mashing A is, the clicking of L/R on the Gamecube controller as you cycle through targets while mashing, the shooting so nd effect, and the fact that when you really mash your gun smokes. Never realized it before but this is probably a big part of why I didn't enjoy it as much on Wii.

Oh this is great timing, I just started a couple replays. Wanted to do Prime 1 and Dread, maybe Samus Returns after. But I've got my eye on that Ridley Ravager badge so I guess I might have to do some Zero Mission too.
Going through the list and writing down which entries align with my goals, will report back with some proofs in the near future hopefully.

Whoa, Boost Guardian on veteran mode does NOT mess around.

One detail I like is that, whenever you open a translate door, it always says "Through vigilance and strength, we create peace." after the first message. It's such a nice little thing to add, but it brings so much weight.

I'm not sure if I'm going to go for the 100% item difficulty, or at least I'll try my best. Just remembered that SUPER annoying Power Bomb upgrade where you needed to get past a few of those monsters that stick their long tongue at you in morph ball mode and pulls you all the way down :(

Awesome! Yes, I agree, the game holds up fantastically. I replayed it just last year (for the Prime Hunter badge during the Fami GameCube event, fittingly enough!), and it was still just as masterful as I remembered. The Frigate Orpheon is indeed a heck of a prologue, and I love how Retro quite deliberately paralleled Super Metroid's Ceres Station opening with it, complete with Ridley flying away to the game's primary planetary setting. Things start out quiet, mysterious, and intriguing, easing you into the game from an atmospheric standpoint, while also giving you a feel for how Samus controls in 3D / first-person. Parasite Queen makes for a really neat first boss, and the escape sequence is enjoyable (especially if you Morph Ball through those tunnels!)

Stoked to keep reading your continued impressions on revisiting this classic!

I've never finished the original Metroid II, which is something I still need to remedy, but I played some of it with the EJRTQ Colorization recently, and I really dug the look.

(Great stuff putting in the Metroid work and earning all these badges, btw!)

Thanks, folks! I definitely had some amazing help.

Yeah, definitely an understandable sentiment. I see where you're coming from. I'd like to give the community what they want, so if there's enough demand, I wouldn't be opposed to making some badges for Other M. I was simply coming at it from a perspective of not wanting to make folks feel compelled to play what most would consider to be the black sheep of the Metroid series.
At the end of the day it’s not a big deal and I get it, a lot of people don’t care for Other M. You won’t be catching me saying it’s story is good or anything like that, but I genuinely found the gameplay of it, the main thing I personally go for Metroid games for, to be a ton of fun. I think if it wasn’t tied to a game whose story is a meme, I think it’d be looked at more fondly.

I just personally wouldn’t say, put the Lecarde Chronicles on a list to play over Lord of Shadow if this were a Castlevania thing. But again, it’s not really a big deal. I don’t want it to seem like I’m downplaying the work you put it into this or anything. Just a little food for thought I guess.

I wrapped up the Agon Wastes tonight. Lots of great stuff here including your first trip to Dark Aether, the space pirate base, the first Dark Samus showdown, and your first big boss fight.

Meant to reply to @Irene earlier, I agree there’s a few areas where you can see a larger world for Aether that’s very cool compared to Prime. I think my favorite so far is the top of the elevator to Agon Wastes and the glass tunnel leading up to it. You can look out that canyon and imagine what’s out there versus Prime which was always very immediate.

Oh phew, so glad to see this goes for two months since I probably wont have the time until January. Too much to keep up with in gaming right now, ha!

Right now I’ll be targeting just Dread challenges and anything I happen to get along the way in doing that, since I still need to go back and beat it! Perhaps complete too, but right now I’m not expecting it.

If Prime HD was out I’d probably toss a Prime game in there, but for now I’m going to hold off.

Sorry for the long post, decided to reply to a bunch of y'all at once!

AM2R update: I've reached The Tower, which features probably my favorite track in the game. Absolutely bumpin' Lower Norfair remix, and one that goes for a completely different vibe than the remixes featured in Prime and Samus Returns.

For those who plan to play AM2R, especially on a difficulty level above Normal, I highly suggest avoiding (boss spoiler) Torizo in the Industrial Complex, until later in the game. It's an optional encounter, so you can come back later, when you're stronger. Easily one of the coolest boss fights in the game, but also among the most challenging. Last time, I decided to persist until I eventually emerged victorious, but this time, I wisely saved it until just before The Tester boss fight in The Tower. Whooped its ass on the first try. Kinda felt bad to trivialize a boss that provided such a respectable challenge on my first playthrough, lol.
I know it’s in part because it’s seared into my memory and also because it is so compelling and excellent, but I am still surprised how I am flying through Prime. In my head, I’ve always taken my time with these games soaking in the sights and carefully considering my path forward and handling enemies. Yet here I already just wrapped up the space pirate base in Phendrana Drifts and I’m sitting outside Thardus’ door with I believe over 60% of the scans done (I definitely got the achievement ping for 50%). I remember the Space Pirate base being one of the two really tough spots growing up (the other space pirate base being the other), but I tore it apart. Wii motion controls absolutely help too. This playthrough is seemingly going down as the most fun I’ve had playing the game.
Yeah, I was definitely surprised by how quickly you managed to breeze through it! The Wii control scheme is indeed great. Did you by any chance make use of missile cancelling, in your playthrough? It's fun and powerful! Quite useful for those Space Pirate encounters in Phendrana Drifts. Phazon Mines are usually a bussy buster either way though, unfortunately. 😅
Nearly done with Prime! After defeating the Omega Pirate I realized I was only short two missiles. I pulled out my old Nintendo Power strategy guide and took a look at the maps to try to remember where I would have missed them since I thought I had done my fully thorough sweep already. One I thought I just misheard the noise for and walked past (the red leaves morph ball tunnel past the lava room in Chozo Ruins) the other though was very frustrating in Phazon Mines since it was literally the room I took stock of my issue in, but I went to Chozo Ruins first so I had to trek all the way back lol. It was the tall room after killing the Omega Pirate and the only indication at all is the noise if you hear it and the X Ray visor. It’s on a platform that doesn’t stand out at all and you have to power bomb it which there are no signs for again aside from the X Ray visor.

But now I’m all good since I have all the scans so far (I didn’t miss any!) and I’m saved at my ship ready to fight my favorite boss fight in the game, Meta Ridley, and then go on to defeat Metroid Prime. Can’t wait to beat it tomorrow!
I always miss the red leaves Morph Ball tunnel one. That, and the destructible pillar in Magmoor Caverns, if I remember correctly.

Excellent work on getting 100% of the scans! Glad you were able to manage that. It sucks missing just one or two of them, but I think that's what happened to me, when I replayed Prime last year. Sure hope I can get 'em all this time!
starting super. playing back to back to back, they did an excellent job making each game feel completely different from the last for the main series of four. haven't really dove into fusion yet but from my memory even though I don't think it's as good as the first three, it definitely still stands on its own compared to them. very talented team was working on this series.
Yeah, each of the original four has its own, highly distinct vibe, which is great. Fusion served as my introduction to the series, so it's one I'll always remember fondly, and one that brings me a lot of comfort to go back to. I've been replaying it for most of my life, honestly. Pretty wild to be able to say that, thinking back on it now. Love the horror vibes and direction, even if the gameplay isn't as good as Super's, or Zero Mission's.
Boss of Dark Agon Wastes defeated!

I knew exactly going in how freaking good this game is, but nevertheless it's been awesome to get a keen reminder.

The opening is so good. A stark contrast to the peaceful opening on Tallon VI, this is pure survival horror material. It's genuinely unnerving fighting possessed federation troopers. And the entry into Temple Grounds gives me the shivers, Just seeing the camera zooming out on this open environment with insects humming about, and the cloudy sky, and the choirs humming, it's so good.

The entrance into Dark Aether, likewise, is also amazing, just the short sequence where Sams gets her hand fried really helps establish what a hostile place this is. Then there's the concept of bosses made up of Samus' abilities, just brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Such an incredible game, still.
I'm really excited to get to my replay of Echoes. I've only ever played it once, and admittedly, it made for my least favorite of the Prime Trilogy, but seeing you so passionate and enthusiastic about it is inspiring! I think what put me off was the constant switching between Light and Dark Aether, which I thought was tedious, but now that I know what to expect, I don't think it's going to bother me as much. I loved the game's darker tone, relative to Prime 1 and 3.
@Aurc Thank you for this wonderful event, btw! Not sure I will be able to go for any other badges anytime soon, but I'll be damned if there is a Metroid event and I don't participate. Hope I will be able to at least manage to do another run of Dread over the holidays!
Absolutely, you're super welcome! It's all out of a love for my favorite series of all time. Metroid rocks. Your participation is very much appreciated.

Perfectly understandable! Yes, take your time. The intent behind the two month event duration was to give everyone ample time to engage at their leisure, especially considering the badges span most of the series. We all have other games to play, and other matters to contend with in general, so feel free to come back to this when you're ready. :) Thanks again for your help, too!

Didn’t know missile canceling was a thing lol. Would make them way more useful given how slow they are. I usually used them to finish an enemy if I knew one was enough. I made extensive use of charge beam shots, especially Wave Beam, since it stuns. I usually horde limited ammo items (it’s an extension of the hold all your elixers in an RPG until the final boss mentality), but I did feel more comfortable using Super Missiles this playthrough so I worked those in on occasion too.

Also I know exactly what pillar you are talking about in Magmoor. When I got it hearing the noise I thought how upset I’d be if I missed it given it’s another X-Ray only hidden thing. Thankfully lingering strong memories from a prior playthrough made me remember an item was in that room so it must have gotten me in the past.

I love how powerful Super Missiles feel in Prime. That Charge Beam flash being converted into the energy for the missile is just perfect. Seeing the flying Pirates go down with just one of those is so satisfying.

I’ll definitely go for the Dread badges! I can see myself replaying Metroid on NES for the first time since high school (save states are gonna help!), and playing Metroid II for the first time ever. A replay of Super and Fusion also sound good. I think I’ll skip replaying Samus Returns though. I’d also like to replay Prime, and try Prime 2, Prime 3, and Other M for the first time, but that sounds like a big commitment!

Lost to Alpha Blogg with it having only a sliver of health. Meh.

I really can't overstate how great the Prime Trilogy feels like to control, with the Wiimote aiming. Got to be up there with some of the best controlling games ever. It just feels so good to just move around that it would still be a fantastic game were it only a corridor shooter.

Great questions! Terribly sorry, you've made me realize that for someone who actually wants to sell people on Metroid Planets, I've done next to zero to actually explain what it is!

Ok, so I'll try to keep this as simple and direct as possible: Metroid Planets is a game by VacantShadeGames on the Metroid Construction Forums. Adhering closely to the sound and aesthetic of NES Metroid, it consists of three main pillars:

  • Planet Zebeth, a faithful, yet modernized remake of NES Metroid. It features sharper physics and more precise controls, a functioning map system, rock solid 60 FPS performance (as opposed to the frame drops of even the NSO version of the original), a sweet remixed soundtrack by MiniMacro Sound, QOL features such as respawning with full health and ammo (no more farming), new animations (most notably Samus's run cycle), autosaves, and more.

  • Planet Novus, an original campaign featuring all of the above, and then some. Novus encompasses a longer adventure harboring some fun surprises I don't wanna spoil, and a larger, more intricate map than Zebeth. It heavily incorporates elements of Super Metroid, including 8-bit "demakes" of its OST, by the highly talented Loeder.

  • Planet Enigma. I'll come right out and say it: this is literally a Metroid version of Super Mario Maker. Players create their own rooms, and the game chains them all together to form a playable campaign with natural progression. I've downloaded some room packs and generated some worlds myself, and it's really neat seeing what the community has been able to put together.

I consider the game to be a work of immense passion and reverence for the Metroid series, with a high degree of polish and quality in its design. In no way am I affiliated with the developer, and in no way is the game a commercial product. I'm just a fanboy who wants more folks to play it. It's like a 20MB download, will run on any computer, and makes for a ton of fun. If I didn't wholeheartedly believe it was excellent, I wouldn't have featured it in the event. AM2R is well known in the Metroid community (and with good reason), but Planets less so, even though I feel as though it's absolutely of comparable quality. These are probably the two best Metroid fan games out there.

I think the only thing left to do is show off a few gifs! First one is slow for me, for whatever reason, but opening it in a new tab should solve that, if it looks slow for you as well.

Didn’t get to play too much, but I entered Torvus Bog tonight. This level definitely feels like a bog in that the rooms are small, but are slow to traverse especially before you get the water item. I forgot exactly how big Torvus was until I made it to the map room. Nice surprise. Dreading the most infamous boss battle coming up, but I remember it is easier in the Trilogy release and I do have five energy tanks at least which should help a ton.

A minor annoyance tonight, I don’t like checking in with characters or temples in this game. Like I had to go talk to U-Mos to progress instead of going right to Torvus and all he really had to say was “more bad guys ahead.” Yeah…never would have guessed lol.

That is one thing about the Prime games-- they always have one or two moments like this that piss you off. Always forget until the last minute about the "cannot continue down this path" moment in the submerged Frigate in Prime 1 for example 🤬

Didn’t get to play too much, but I entered Torvus Bog tonight. This level definitely feels like a bog in that the rooms are small, but are slow to traverse especially before you get the water item. I forgot exactly how big Torvus was until I made it to the map room. Nice surprise. Yeah, and having to go back and fourth from the energy controllers after beating the guardians. Echoes overall has the most amount of tedious aspects to it. But it's highs are so amazingly high that it makes it makes it worth putting up with.

Several Super Metroid firsts for me today. First time "beating" Ridley at the beginning (I had no idea it could be done until a few months ago), first time beating the game in one sitting, and at 4:43 it's my fastest clear time by far. Thanks to all for the effort put into this fantastic event, and thanks for the excuse yall gave me to dig back into one of my lifelong favorites! 😁

I finished Torvus Bog tonight and I’m sitting right outside Sanctuary Fortress. Torvus is definitely Prime 2 at its most oppressive and dense. Enemies are aggressive and often unusual and the maps weigh you down. I forgot about two things playing it so I did get lost for a bit: you have to leave Torvus for the seeker missiles and how to get the second key exactly even though it was where I thought it was ultimately lol. Speaking of things I forgot, I totally forgot the grapple guardian boss fight existed at all. He has a neat thing going, but I think the Boost Guardian and area boss leave much stronger impressions.

I had five energy tanks heading into the Boost Guardian and thanks to some tweaks made to the fight in the Trilogy release it isn’t that bad. That said, wow he’s a weird boss to read and I can absolutely see why he gave me so much grief originally (back in the day I got Game Over so many times). I was never in any danger this time (more experience, more health, and the consistent and more plentiful health pick up tweaks), but I still got hit a lot. The Boost Guardian is significantly more difficult than the final area boss (and anything else in the game) which is amusing, but Torvus’s final boss despite a weak first stage comes together well.

Very excited to head to my favorite area in the game tomorrow! Can’t believe I’m nearing the end!

I got this far in Zero Mission, but I found that I really wasn’t enjoying myself the more I played it. I can’t really put my finger on why, but I figured getting roughly halfway through the game was enough for me to call it quits. Oh well. I’m gonna move on to Fusion and hopefully I’ll have the motivation to finish that one. We’ll see!

Super happy with everyone's engagement in the event thus far! Thanks all! Your progress and completion pictures are awesome to look at. 🥳 😊 @chocolate_supra, your Sonic plush is adorable, and I shouldn't be surprised you've blessed us with his appearance. Lovely pics! @Brock Reiher, you continue to hustle and grind. Impressive stuff. The final Fusion Suit indeed looks great in Prime. @KraftVenture, I'm sorry to hear you weren't vibing with Zero Mission. No shame in that! You certainly gave it a fair shot, considering you made it that far in, and were headed to fight Mother Brain. Here's hoping you'll find more enjoyment in Fusion.

If I've made a mistake anywhere, like a missed badge, or an incorrect Energy Tank count reflected in post #6, please let me know. I think everything should be correct, though.

As for myself, I've wrapped up AM2R with 100%!

Mission's start, and mission's end. SR388 at night makes for a tranquil sight.
I enjoyed the experience even more than my first playthrough from a couple months back. AM2R is genuinely a fantastic game. I could write an essay on all the things I love about it, but I'll keep it brief: gameplay, music, boss fights, and everything else are top tier. Utilizing the snappy foundation of Zero Mission as a basis, it expertly hearkens back to Metroid's time on the GBA, and very much feels like something Nintendo could've made during that era. The only thing that potentially "holds back" the experience is the fact that it's still fundamentally tied to the structure of Metroid 2, a game in which you fight the same four bosses on repeat. Regardless, the Metroids are quick and fun to fight, and if you're diligent in making sure you get all those upgrades, Super Missiles really start to make short work of them. Omega Metroids legit gave me less trouble than some of the Alpha fights, thanks to how powerful Super Missiles are. Then there's the fact that the Queen herself is a fantastic fight, and all of the non-Metroid boss fights are - chef's kiss -. It's a game that respects the foundation of Metroid 2, while simultaneously aiming to make up for some of the perceived shortcomings of the original, and it does a stellar job at that.

To be honest, I already feel like starting up yet another playthrough, but I need to go back and get the rest of the Metroid 1 badges, in addition to the ones exclusive to Planets. After that, Super Metroid to follow of course, as I'm making my way through the 2D saga. I can't remember whether I've - ever - gotten 100% in Fusion, despite it being one of my all-time faves. This may end up counting as my first time doing so. Should be fun.

I hope I am showing the correct arena for the first alpha metroid, but I believe since I beat the game that should qualify me for the second badge since the counter shows zero.
