Discussion GTA 6 is reportedly set to be the most expensive game of all time. The game will cost between $1-2 billion.

.....so at least over twice as expensive as avengers endgame. Obviously it will work out for them but for other AAA titles this doesn't seem sustainable

That’s not too surprising. Rockstar only seems to produce one game at a time and recently, so it makes sense all their money would go into one project.

at this point it's probably too big to fail. You don't spend that kind of money for that

If other AAA games start costing this much though, christ

hopefully those 2 billions will be enough to afford a good writer and someone to tell them that “mashing X to run” is an awful design choice

No clue if this is accurate at all but GTA Online prints money so it's not even that surprising to me. Wonder when this is ever going to come out though.

Get ready for this to get ported for 20 years before GTA7 shows up as an announcement of an announcement.

I find this crazy honestly, at some point there are going to be diminishing returns in terms of gameplay.

While I doubt that "source" has any real figures, I would not be shocked to hear that GTA VI will be the most expensive video game to create.

If you include a decade of support and maintenance for GTAO, yeah, sure, almost definitely.

What has Fortnite's total budget been so far? Wasn't that way over a billion according to the MS/AKB leaks/comments?

Development purely for launch + marketing is probably going to easily pass something like $300M, and could easily be way more. GTA6 launch is going to be absolutely everywhere, like "largest entertainment launch in history" level of huge.

We got RDR2 in between, so we will probably get another game in between for GTA7.

In terms of diminishing returns, the leaks show Rockstar is the masters of attention to detail, and they actually put effort into dynamic animations and physics.

RDR2 writing was very good. Very human, empathetic, never punched down. Also, a lot of people find the mash to run more engaging.

Grand Theft Auto V has sold over 175 million copies. GTAVI is going to hit like a megaton blast and even IF the budget really is that high it'll break even in under a week.

I guess the online is important cause it's always seemed weird how long it's lasted when the other big games are kinda meant to go on forever, like Minecraft 2 would be weird (though maybe will happen someday if the cost analysis is good enough) and we will get another Mario Kart and it's crazy how long this gap has been but at least that game is built around multiplayer but I thought GTA was more about the story mode and messing around in it but maybe not

This is gonna be super scalable and literally on everything. Not only I expect GTA6 on the Switch successor, I also expect it on later model smartphones. The game will look next gen while scaled back versions can run on weaker systems.

Fortnite is also super high budget project but also super profitable, thanks to its scalable nature.

the big difference between Fortnite and GTAVI, is that GTAVI is going to be a CPU monster.

the leaks have a lot of testing of physics simulations even more complicated than RDR2. so we'll see how it ends up.

I wish i could see how people think these games are good, but they just seem like really fun sandbox games with subpar stories. Game equivalent of porn, nobody cares about the story (I think? I never did).

I'd be curious to hear from those who like the story. Hot take maybe cause I'm tipsy.

I mean the story in GTA 5 was at least interesting. The missions really pulled the story together well. But yeah the sandbox is what makes the game.

The online component will be making money for a decade at least, so Take Two won’t have any issue recouping this multiple fold. I’m sure the launch numbers will be the biggest of all time as well.

how long has it been in development for... like 8 years? when you put the launch marketing into it (hundreds of millions) yeah 1-2 billion makes sense and they will be in profit easily enough (its about 14 million copies for them to make a billion, and GTA V has sold about 175 million)

it went into development after RDR2 finished 5 years ago.

From my experience as a teacher in highschool and how often i get asked if i play Fifa or GTAV i say that crowd mostly play it for the action not the story.

I always say that GTAV released when i myself first entered highschool almost more than 10 years ago: 'Yes ive played it, but it doesnt have enough meat on the bone to still be playing...or anything close to that'

The writing in Bully was also pretty good, but they always struggled with GTA imo, they always want to be edgy and sarcastic and it just doesn’t work.

As for the mash to run, maybe some people find it more engaging but it’s bad for the controllers and more importantly awful for players with disabilities.

what Rockstar have said publicly about GTAVI, from what I remember, is that they aren't really going to do jokes that punch down anymore i.e. no anti-LGBT, etc kinda stuff. so it'll probably end up with humor closer to RDR2 and a more generally serious tone.

Is there any indication that Rockstar care about that? (I've never touched GTAV nor RDR2)
there was "tap assist" and "hold to tap" options in RDR2, so it'll probably be in GTA VI as well, but it should be the default setting imo

oh yeah but theyve still been spending money on it since gta v (and prob not an insignificant amount) - obv full production yes, after rdr2

Counterpoint

It'd be really funny if we gave insane autuers billion dollar budgets on a regular basis
Looking forward to seeing what Peter Molyneux can make with 2 billion dollars to spend and 10 years to develop

Wow at that budget. So it will need to sell give or take 50 million copies to break even if the game costs 2 billion with marketing. Shouldn't be too hard but I would prefer a more regular release tempo and more down to earth budgets. I never even played GTA5 but I did like GTA3.

Wild budget but I’m sure they’ve got some juicy, juicy MTX planned. I shudder to think how much they’ve made off GTAV by now lol

Considering that RDR2 already supposedly cost $800 million to make? That sounds about right to me.

GTA is probably the one and only singular piece of media (not even just video game, but movies too) that could possibly justify such a ludicrous budget though. It's the closest thing the human race has to a guaranteed hit. I mean, it's what pretty much every child in the western world grows up on, it's the definition of too big to fail.
