made back in 1991 for the PC-98 (with an MSX version launching the year prior) the series in this stage is particularly notorious for being shockingly gory compared to the cutesy aesthetic Puyo would later be famous for.
yes, that's Schezo getting decapitated.
thankfully, it didn't take long for the ship to be straightened out. as the MSX and Famicom versions of Puyo Puyo would launch the same year. and quickly turned into Compile's biggest IP.
later ports and installments of Madou would hew closer to what you'd expect from Puyo, such as the SNES exclusive (and already translated) "Madou Monogatari: Big Kindergarten Kids".
however, the association wasn't enough to stop the two series from getting split apart once Compile went bankrupt. while SEGA got the rights to Puyo, Madou would instead be sold off in a lot with various other Compile IPs. currently it's in the hands of D4 Enterprise.
while SEGA and D4 have thankfully managed to collab to ensure the older games are still readily available in Japan, making new installments has a noticeable caveat of the developers being unable to use characters that were transferred over to Puyo Puyo. as shown by the release of "Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God"/"Sei Madou Monogatari" in 2013.
