StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (New Staff Post, Please read)

I know, I shared this joke on my Twitter too...This thing will be fun if the buttons on next hardware turns to be a thing
oh geez, I just realized I misread what you initially posted, I thought you were saying LiC was going too far, but I see now. 😅

YES I hope the buttons on the new hardware are a real thing. I was always a fan of the North American grey/purple scheme but have since come around the multi-color scheme as well. I'd welcome either.

my prediction here is that Prime 4 is this year's switch big game while Pokemon Gen 10 is next year's
I can see it being released this year, but it's not gonna have the same impact as a 3d Mario, Zelda or Pokemon as a system seller. Will be interesting to see how it plays out though. Il

Is it possible we could get 3d Mario, MP4, and a gen 5 remake of Pokemon for switch 2 in the same year? Maybe, depending how early it releases. I don't expect more than two new AAA 1st party games in the last 4 months of the year.

There was a 2 year gap between Sword/Shield and the gen 4 remakes, and considering the rumors about gen 5 since last year, a gen 5 remake could happen for pokemon. Unless they decided to wait an extra year to polish the game up (I hope so).

I'll post predictions again.

Q4 2024:
-3D Mario as a launch game. MP4 and/or Gen 5 Pokemon remake. I think all three within a span of 4 months is too much
- A bunch of already released ever green switch titles getting performance patches on switch 2.
-Higher tier NSO gets announced. NS0 gate keeping GC and Wii games on a higher tiered Switch 2 could be a possibility
-3rd party: Eldin Ring, RDR2, Cod, Cyber Punk 2077, Fort Nite, Avatar to name a few. MK1 and new elder scrolls?

2025: MP4 (if not 2024), XBX port, MK9

2026: New Zelda game, Smash 5.

2027: Animal Crossing?

Zelda ports guaranteed in 2024 or 2025. New Xenoblade game in 2025 maybe. I'm sure DK, Kirby as well and a GCN remake.
Really interesting video from Hardware Unboxed about the image quality differences using 1080p native vs 1080p with DLSS Quality. They determined 7 out of the 10 games they tested looked better at native resolution. Although they noted text was more legible with DLSS at further distances. This is worth thinking about for the inevitable so-called "lazy ports" (I know it's a reductive term) to the next gen system. We're already seeing demanding Unreal Engine games upscaling from sub SD resolutions on the Xbox Series S with games like Immortals of Aveum having a base resolution of 436p. I imagine most first party games will aim for 1080p native like they do on PS4 but multiplatform games may, in select cases, choose much lower resolutions.

Agreed on the 1080p native resolution for switch 2, minus some shares ports with switch where they could aim for native 1440p or 4k.

Seems to me like that'd be a waste. If it's going to use DLSS docked, it probably will handheld as well. And if it's not going to use DLSS at all... that's just throwing performance away. "7 out of 10 look better native" sounds good, but "20-60% better frame rate, and still matches native in stills 3 out of 10 times" also sounds good.
I think we're going to start seeing some performance mode options on the next system but it's not going to be as frequent as they are on PS5/Series X.
Seems like it'd be even easier, considering every single Switch game has to be built for two resolution outputs anyway. But only a handful of games give the option of outputting at handheld resolution with greater frame rate, so shrug.
Could they avoid having the console out of stock at launch by opening pre-orders early? That could be benefinitial because they would have a direct reference of how many people will be picking it up day one and then order the manufacturing of X+(X/2) to avoid what I mentioned earlier.
If it was as easy as "We want this many, so make this many", we'd see a lot fewer year 1 shortages. It's not going to be realistic or efficient to force production to 3 million/month to sate launch, then have to cut it back drastically.

How did you come to that conclusion? From all accounts the partnership has been a mutually beneficial success so far.
I didn’t mean that Switch 3 would have a solution built by another GPU manufacturer. I was referring to the fact that NVIDIA has a new business division for custom solutions for AI as well as video game consoles. They could do a chip that will be even more customized and distinct from the Tegra

The info we would have needed from the DLSS vs Native video is to compare native 720p vs 1080p using DLSS Quality. That way the rendering resolutions are the same and we can see how much better/worse it looks compared to native 720p. This will be relevant for portable play on SNG.

It’s weird the hill some people are choosing to die on regarding the Switch and the next system. (Demeech comes to mind)
i kinda of understand him, countless years of Switch Pro rumors that lead to nowhere, now the same apply to Switch sucessor, 5 years of Switch sucessor rumors and 4 years of Switch sucessor rumors, one day the leakers/insiders will get right when Nintendo launch it next console.

If we want to talk branding, beyond what I've said on it before, the four colours have been part of the Nintendo brand for nearly the entire time since SNES.

Red, Yellow, Blue, Green is present on:
SNES/SFC(Excl. NA) controller and logo.
N64 controller (Start, C, A, B) and logo.
GCN controller (B, A, C, Z).
A gap during the Wii and DS era.
New Nintendo 3DS and XL logos and buttons.
amiibo logo and UI

I think RED should stay their primary colour, it's very them, it's very "life", but expanding their existing use of the four "button" colours would be pretty on-brand.

(Red, blue, yellow and gold were branding for the original Famicom, while I don't think this is particularly relevant other than them continuing to use red, I do think it's interesting to note that red, blue and yellow have been part of their brand for decades, and green not a lot shorter.)

The fact that he is not being sarcastic

That might be the worst take I have ever seen by the way
I mean the iPhone didn't take off till the iphone 4. These MR platfroms imo won't take of until software and hardware reaches affordability and maturity. It remains to seen if Apple can pull it off in the consumer space.

What if the next gen device had a feature during handheld play that allowed you to toggle DLSS to extend battery life? For original Switch games that can actually run at 1080p in handheld on the new device anyway.
DLSS does not consume power at the same frequency, but it allows you to have increased image quality at the same frequency. DLSS actually serves to save power in a mobile device, not consume an excess.

Original Switch games without a significant next gen patch won't have access to DLSS anyway: it needs to actually be integrated into the game, it can't be slathered on top like a sauce.

For a Switch 1 game that gets updated to support 1080p in handheld mode on Switch 2, it would consume less power if it did so using DLSS rather than 1080p native.

To reiterate, 1080p using DLSS takes less performance than native 1080p: it does not consume power, but it can reduce power consumption at the same resolution.

I think colored buttons + colored housing looks unbelievably bad, so I hope if the stock version has them any colored variations just get black ones
I kind of agree: I fully expect the system to have grey or black controllers by default with fully coloured buttons.

Coloured variations are more complicated, but we couuuld see them use a grey circle around the buttons, a-la SNES, to make them look less ugly and improve the UX. Alternatively they could do what special edition Xbox One controllers did, and include the colours as a diamond between the buttons so you can at least still see which is which at a quick glance.

That’s what I mean. For Switch games that get next-gen patches, the option to toggle DLSS on to save power and thereby increase battery life

Fair enough.

DLSS can produce better or similar image quality compared to native, and if they go through the trouble of integrating it, you're basically giving people a "make battery life worse" button that has very little impact on visuals, and that doesn't seem very logical.

There's a name I haven't seen in a long time. And probably won't for a while. 2028 seems like the earliest possible year for release (my personal guess is 2030), considering Starfield only just wrapped up. Hell will freeze over before TES6 is a 2024 release imo.

I'm not sure what is worth thinking about tbh. Under the assumption of a lazy port, you either get a DLSS image at 1080p or a lower res image. DLSS is not facilitating laziness in that sense.

The comparison is also a bit skewed here (because they are testing a theoretical comparison, not a practical one): the goal of DLSS is not to replace native resolution for no reason. By rendering at lower native resolution, you can render more complex scenes (higher geometry density, better textures) and use DLSS to improve the image quality. When a dev gets the choice to render at native 720p, improve the geometry quality as a result, and then add DLSS to 1080p, then it it not at all to be assumed that this does not give a better visual presentation than if they went with a native resolution from the start. Or, alternatively, it could be the difference between a native 1080p game at 30 fps or a DLSS 1080p game at 60 fps.

Is there a single Switch game that has graphic settings? I wouldn't put it past Nintendo to have some dumb policy against it.
Some with performance/quality modes, even Nintendo published. (FE Warriors)

Some with very deep settings (Witcher 3)

But it is pretty unusual and I can't see Nintendo doing it to their own games. Will most of their customers even know what DLSS is or does?

Switch 1 games will not be able to use DLSS not even with next gen patches, they would need to be ported for that.
And pretty much most switch 1 games will be able to reach native 1080p in portable mode with little effort anyway assuming they receive a patch.

last time I did this was with OG DS and OG 3DS.
3DS XL was pushing things, the Switch Lite is already too big to fit in anything smaller than a handbag.

My concern with size is the current Switch JUST barely fits into my small handbag, NG Switch almost certainly will not.

Rise: race the future, Grid, FE warriors from my collection. Not many but not everything need to a dumb Nintendo policy.

Darksiders Remastered has performance / quality modes.
Quake has anti-aliasing / ambient occlusion / depth of field / motion blur / fog / dynamic shadows options.
Several other Switch games have toggles for motion blur or depth of field.

I don't think any Switch 2 game will have an explicit 'DLSS' toggle. At most, Performance / Quality modes which will change the DLSS preset under the hood.

DLSS is also a form of anti-aliasing that some effects may rely on, if a game is trying to optimize their console port I don't think they would expose any option to disable it outright and possibly ruin the intended look.

Disliking the colored buttons on colored housing is understandable.

Disliking the colored buttons even on black, grey, or white housing? That’s soulless behavior.

You don't need a 3DS-like screen for VR. Existing headsets either give each eye a separate screen, or (like Labo) take the one screen and give most of the left side to the left eye and most of the right side to the right eye.

But for reasons of size practicality, the trend in VR has been to small, dense screens. Someone earlier was joking about what if the screen rumors were a misunderstanding and it was 8cm rather than 8 inches. That would be a bit more suited for VR, even if 1080p would still be quite low.

I tried finding information about the actual size of the screens the Quest 3 uses and couldn't, but in this teardown they remove a section including the screen/lens/etc. for one of the eyes and there's a 2064x2208 screen in here.

I know, I just thought it would be a neat way to compensate for not having that sort of hardware, given that the concept only allows for the base screen to be the VR screen (it would just slide into the dock, which would fold into a headset in one or two steps). It's a Labo-like solution.

I know some people don't like the Switch successor potentially being bigger, but also... I've never seen or heard of people putting their Switch in their pants pockets before. That's buck wild to me.
TIL I'm buck wild

We'll see when the final form factor is revealed but there are many reasons I take the Switch on flights and leave the Deck at home. One of the main ones is that the thing takes up so much space that I'd rather not deal with the effort it takes to pack it.

Hmmmm.. I just thought of something.

I have 2 Switches at home, both sitting kind of behind the TVs.

I buy the Switch 2, and I place it behind the TV too next to the Switch.

Since most of my playtime is on TV, it stays there for days, maybe weeks before I finally take it out the dock. I usually reach and pull out the Switch with a quick look.

Now here's the dilemma:
Since they both look the same, from what we think Switch 2 will look like based on all those mockups, how will I know which one's which? And the same goes for my kids. I don't want to keep pulling out the wrong one first.

In conclusion:
There must be a clear differentiator that makes it super easy for people to quickly tell which is the Switch 2. The size won't be enough since the difference isn't that obvious.

So all I could think of is it's either the dock will have a completely new look that will clearly differentiate it from the Switch's dock, like how you can tell different generation consoles apart from their distinct looks (since the dock is the "home console" part of the system), or the joycons will have a completely different shape and look as well. Or...

Regardless of the YouTuber, it has to be somewhat annoying for Nate that his video will get less views than a lot of these YouTubers who make a video about his video.

Also, controversy gets clicks. RGT85 likes to fuel that "no backwards compatibility" talking point because it gets people's attention. Does he truly believe Nintendo will forgo BC so they can sell 60 million people MK8 Deluxe again? I doubt it, but it got him views and that makes him money.

People value theatrics like Comedy, Sensational reactions, Information structure, high production value over actual information, Facts, Informed speculation, and Truth. Its why a reality TV show guy can become president over somebody with a Nobel peace prize or any science based award. Its also why an extrovert will always get promoted over someone with better productivity. Not to say an extrovert cant win both sides of that coin but the personable nature is more important than production.

At least, Thats my interpretation as to why somebody like Nintendo Prime can outview Nate. 133K subs vs. 23K. I hate everything about it but its reality and I feel it like will only get worse.

I think the Joy-Con will change shape to improve comfort as they get bigger, but honestly I think they nailed the Dock the first time! I think a unique and wacky dock design would be fun, but I think there's a chance they just reuse the current Dock, like how they reused the WiFi Adapter power supply for DSi through 2DS XL.

Size, a change in shape of the device (more rounded or more sharp), and a different finish (metallic, for instance) should be enough.

yeah the size is one of those things that depends greatly on the individual

I feel like I've seen it said repeatedly that the increase will not "appreciably affect the portability of the device," but in your case it will. I was in high school when the switch launched and I had a perfectly switch-sized pocked on the front of my backpack. no idea what it was actually for (pencil pouches?), but it was perfect and the new one would not be

in short while it'll suck for me I really pity the students who come september might go back to doomscrolling twitter on the school bus

One of the things that caught my eye in this video is the artifacts that show up is a 1080p DLSS Quality image which otherwise do not show up in a 4K DLSS Quality image. To put it another way I think DLSS will be consistently good when the base resolution will be relatively high begin with but some current gen ports may not always be able to achieve that high base resolution and the final image may have some artifacts.

I'll go back to carrying my Switch case like an unfashionable oblong clutch. 🫠

I think most students will have room in their bag for the new system, really. If you have a case you can throw it in with the "general population", and I keep it in the laptop slot if the bag has one. I don't think many young people use Twitter today nowadays anyway, it's a bit like Facebook is to us, the social media platform for older internet users out of touch with the youth. Only with more racism and transphobia, somehow.

I think it'll impact portability, I won't deny that, but Switch was already too big for most people to carry it around without a bag anyway, and the new system doesn't change that. Meanwhile, bigger screens are desirable, as is improved comfort. They sacrifice a little bit of portability appeal (which they will likely claw back with the Lite 2), to get some appeal in another area. Sacrifices, swings, and roundabouts.

But now I'm thinking about next gen accessories. I wonder what the first party carrying case will look like. It isn't great on Switch/OLED, it's so tight it sort of wears the sticks down. Maybe a rigid flipcase?

March...so close.

It's gonna be the longest month of my life isn't it?

I want this to end up in a clickbait thumbnail
I hope someone takes it and uses it for some BS rumor. I put the Super Famicom color scheme in there bc all the discussion, and I hope someone spins it as Mario RPG confirms it's real or something.

2026 seen to soon for a new Legend of Zelda game, 2028 seen more likely when the next Legend of Zelda is released,i believe Nintendo will make the next Animal Crossing a priority, so the should release in 2025 istead of 2027.

i was thinking, isn't march too soon for Nintendo to reveal it next console? comsidering the console is rumored to launch on septembre/octobre, shouldn't the console be anounced in april/may istead

but like

what if you need to carry a laptop? and books?

like someone else said, what if you're traveling and your space is valuable? regardless of anyone's circumstance the larger size makes it some amount harder to take with you. it's just that for most, especially the demographic of a gaming forum, that amount is negligible
