Rumour Xbox First Party going third party/multiplat - Discussing and Summary Thread (UPDATE: 4 Xbox exclusives are coming to Nintendo Switch and PS5)

Been a wild ride over on the ERA thread. What a Sunday! I'm absolutely glued to the news because I bought a Series X during the holidays. I can, and will, return it given I have a Switch and PS5, and these funds will instead go towards a Switch 2 or PS5 Pro later this year.

Now it's REALLY time to beg for Rare Replay and Halo: CE on Switch/Switch 2 😂

All those request posts on this thread yet no one asked for Age of Empires Definitive Edition on Switch. Hey, the turn based spinoff on DS actually sold over a million, we deserve the real thing on the go as well!

I know we tend to give people who tie their identities to these brands a hard time and laugh, but I’ll try to be a little empathetic here. I’ve seen some pretty bad melt downs on twitter about this. I think that if someone is having this kind of emotional reaction to this news, then maybe it’s time for them to step back and think about why they have tied so much of themselves to these companies in the first . It’s not just the xbox, its PlayStation, nintendo, apple , google, car manufacturers, sports team.

I think subconsciously we have allowed these things to become more and more intertwined with who we are. So yes, we are laughing at console fanboys online, but now im starting to wonder why they feel that way. I mean, I know I’ve certainly been guilty of this. I was one of the xbox one’s biggest defenders from like 2013 to 2016, I think I knew I had to change something when an online argument about whether or not the xbox “deserves” kingdom hearts 3 cause me to get fumingly angry in real life and snap at someone at work.

Still may be worth hanging onto for those backwards compatible 360 and og Xbox games. Thats why I keep mine around

I feel bad for anyone who hardcore invests in any one brand. Even while on a Nintendo site, there are plenty of folks here who aren't 100% tied to the company and that's the healthiest way to go.

Companies are not your friends. They are interesting and the things they do to get people to buy their products can be amusing such as sending merch, or doing special events, but they are not your friend. They aren't the consumers, influencers, marketters, and general employee's friend.

A company cares only about sustaining itself.

I think grown adults who get really mad about electronic toys on the internet (not just good natured ribbing and jokes) probably need a wake up call, to be honest

Definitely, I agree, but I also know what it’s like to need mental help. Anyone who is this upset I sincerely hope this causes them to do some soul searching

My bet is they release 1 more home console and that is it.

Feel bad for Xbox fans. Definitely feels like this was a Satya decision, and the ABK purchase only accelerated these plans.

To think all of this is arguably a domino effect from a single bad conference over a decade ago:

The funny thing is

If they waited a decade the backlash wouldn't have been as bad, in fact they could have gained more market share in the One era and then just taken a small hit this gen

I believe the industry is about 70% digital rn and will likely be 80% by next gen.

I am not a fan of there only being two major players in the hardware space, hopefully Valve fills the void (and not Amazon, Google, Apple 🥲)

Let's be real, this is more than one press conference. This was a bunch of tiny bad decisions that built from as far back as the first console.

MS not building and maintaining their own first party games outside of Halo and Gears (before those fell off) and relying too much on third party offerings is just one of the many missteps they made.

Their nebulous platform above all else or whatever concept has backfired massively, devalued and diluted their brand, confused costumers and shook confidence in actually being invested in anything they are doing now when all they talk about is some theoretical future… and they keep pivoting to make it look like they are actually winning by losing somehow.

Sell systems, sell games. Has pretty much always been a winning formula they have Galaxy brained theirselves out of for some dumb reason.

The same people who cheered the ABK acquisition and now lament these rumours, must be some bittersweet irony. Industry consolidation is still bad, but at least platform exclusivity would be taken off the table. Wonder how long MS will sit on this pretending it's not leaking out from under them before they make the official announcement.

Anyways when's MCC coming to Switch 2? I want to make Mister Chef shoot the aliens and doesn't afraid of anything on the go
Will he get in his roflcopter that goes soi soi soi soi soi? (god that takes me back)

Lord almighty, how the heart yearns

Honestly, it was probably a possibility they always kept in mind. The acquisitions were probably meant to build the Xbox portfolio, but at some point it just didn't move the needle enough to make up for the losses in revenues from these purchases. And Activision being the hardest fight Microsoft had to make probably cost Microsoft so many benefits from the acquisition deal that this is just them realizing it wouldn't be worth it at this point.
spending so much on studios who's value comes from being multiplatform only to make them exclusive was never good business sense in the first place.

Also Microsoft

There was a period of time where Halo and Gears were near inescapable if you followed video games at all. Now both series are in a weird limbo state, with both of their devs seemingly as well.

This was definitely NOT the plan when they originally wanted Activision, otherwise Sony would never have bothered to try and fight in the first place

It's nutty to see this apparent shift from "look at all of these Xbox exclusives!" to "Wait, where are the games?" to "Redfall wtf" to "Well, there's Starfield" to "Starfield, now coming to PS5."

It would have made sense if it was part of an aggressive strategy to become the top console maker. Their value for so many of these games didnt necessarily come from being multiplatform as much as it was because they were big games that were on playstation. Like had Sony gone and bought activision instead, they would have kept them exclusive, and they could have missed xbox entirely and how many people would have even noticed.

Had MS shown any interest in selling games and selling systems maybe it would have worked. But as it is it probably makes more sense to rake in the profit from sales and systems people actually buy and play games on.

It’s wild to think about how strong of a position they were in with the 360 and just totally fumbled that away. Feels like the final play in the playbook. If this doesn’t work, I think it’s probably over for the Xbox brand. Life comes at you fast.

Frankly, a lot of their in the 360 era was just owed to good fortune they couldn't capitalize on. Sony fumbled the PS3 out of the gate, but a lot of the 360's lead was squandered by the financial and longterm reputational cost of the RROD and other factors.

A lot of those people were cheering on in the hopes of Microsoft becoming more competitive in the console space and taking it more seriously (with the ABK IP beyond CoD)

This goes directly against that, so of course they are upset.

It is more confounding Microsoft used their position as last place in all 3 of the court appearances and is now walking back entirely and ditching the console space in a major way. Snake behavior to their dedicated fans.

Nah they started off decently because of PS3 struggling, but it was 3rd party games performing better, having a more robust online system, better controller, and then the second wind the console got with Kinect that helped it be such a success. People point to RROD but that was only with the first version of the console when they moved 30-40 million units? The V2 360 with kinect sold so much as well.

They took all the wrong lessons from it though. History is written by the winners so the narrative around how successful the 360 actually was and why it was is often lost because of how bad they have been since.

My prediction of what happened is with the ABK merger, the gaming division got so big that they were no longer going to let one person (Phil Spencer) run the show and Satya Nadella and the Board are taking direct control of the gaming division and running it for maximum profit. I expect Phil Spencer to leave the company.

Phil Spencer may care about Xbox and becoming the best platform there is, but Microsoft as a whole is all about software and using their software to make the most money possible. They will gladly kill Xbox if it means they make even more profit selling games everywhere.

It's kinda crazy that this is happening after spending $80 billion on acquisitions. Not surprised considering Microsoft has been making bad decisions for well over a decade with the Xbox brand. Sucks because it means less competition but again not surprised they are pulling a SEGA.

Feels like MS were buying for the brands and the employees were an afterthought, and we've already seen the results of that with those firings.

Not much point to having so many studio IP if you don't have the employees who made those games what they were. Just dead weight and memories of better times.

This was definitely NOT the plan when they originally wanted Activision, otherwise Sony would never have bothered to try and fight in the first place
Spending so long caught up in legal limbo with governmental bodies, having to make concessions for such a purchase, and spending probably way more money than they even anticipated from such a deal had to have strengthened voices in the company that it just wasn't worth it anymore.

MS is so much bigger than Xbox, and for them it probably was time to cut their losses.

I feel like it would take ALOT of strife to get Phil to leave

Xbox One having worse consequences for Microsoft than the Wii U did for Nintendo is pretty wild.
Well they needed a clean branding break from their failure and start fresh.

instead they did the opposite. A terrible name, terrible brand, confusing message

Like despite how many things Nintendo did right with switch, how much damage would have been caused and good decisions been undone had it been called the WiiU+ or some shit.

Imagine spending the GPD of Luxembourg to go from console manufacturer to third party publisher.

If his position as Xbox CEO is nothing more than a title with no power I would expect him to leave on his own

All of this directly contrasts his own beliefs

I'll be honest ... I'm not sure how to feel about this news. I had a vague hope that Microsoft finally investing into gaming might actually provide some real competition to Playstation and make them make better games, it sucks having 2/3 of the console manufacturers be so incompetent that you can't expect consistently good games out of them in the slightest, and I can remember when the 360 was genuinely good. But that was always a long shot, and now with the combo of Gamepass and not caring about competing in the console market? It's possible they continue even further in delivering low quality products. Although to be fair, Hi-Fi Rush and (probably, I haven't played them yet) Pentiment and Psychonauts 2 are the best games Microsoft has made in years, so it's possible that just giving up the console wars won't make their games any worse. But the way I see it, Microsoft internally already had the smallest drive possible to make compelling software out of the big three, and a lot of their great games are things that were already being produced before the acquisition. So this might just make that drive even smaller ...

Either way, I basically just use Microsoft as a publisher now anyways thanks to PC gaming 💪💪💪 Ok unironically though, it's great to have a lot of your games on one machine and it's pretty cool to have so many input choices and options
