News Golden Sun GBA duology out on NSO on January 16th

Cool. I’ve always wanted to try these games. I love that NSO makes these beloved cult classics available to a new generation of potential fans

Big news for folks! Glad they finally ripped the band-aid off and did this drop.

Seems unlikely. It was either do it by hand or find a second GBA back in the day too.
They already have a mechanism for doing this sort of thing single player for FE in Japan. It's pretty irritating that it seems like they're only doing it where there's no other option.

Little observation, in around 3 hours the tweet has over 1 million views. For context the last tweet that has that is the one for the Smash spirits at 1.2 million.

Notice us!

GG to the true blue Golden Sun fans who kept the faith through it all

I can't believe Nintendo really made ya'll wait an entire year
After what has happened with Isaac for Smash since 4 and what happened for the franchise after Dark Dawn, a year didn't seem that bad, tbqf

They are my two favorite games of all time. For those that have not played it, they are turn-based rpgs whose two main distinguishing traits are the use of beings called djinns, which provide several abilities when utilized in battle and are employed for summonings as well, as well as the use of magics (psynergy) outside of battle for information-seeking, puzzle-solving and item-finding purposes. The story is great and they are well paced.
I will replay them eventually, but I need to clear some of my backlog first. To me, they are obviously a must play. Fingers crossed we get something else in the franchise eventually.

The NSO selection is impressive, just makes me wish I could own the games individually. Or at least turn off the borders.

These games have great pixel art that will look splendid with the LCD filter.

I finally will be able to play the second one with my own password. I remember writing the first one at the time after finishing but the game never recognized it (probably messed up I, l and 1 )

For some reason i never played any Golden Sun game back in the GBA-days... I have no idear why. This is my time, finally playing through both GBA games. Thanks Nintendo but after Mario and Luigi and now Golden Sun, what we need for the holy GBA-RPG-Trinity..? Some good old MOTHER 3! (^_^)

what does the passcode do?
So Golden Sun 1 and 2 were initially planned as one game but got split into two because it couldn't all fit on one GBA cartridge (iirc they originally wanted to make it for N64 but moved to GBA since the N64 was on the way out). So it's kind of like a 2-disc JRPG sold as separate games.

To bridge the gap, there's a passcode system where you can carry over things like the stats and items for the Golden Sun 1 characters, and some other stuff like whether or not you did certain sidequests; you generate a passcode in Golden Sun 1 once you're finished, and the plug it into 2 before you start a new game.

This is leading up to the Nintendo Direct announcement of a fourth game, right? Right??

I'm just happy to have these games available on a Nintendo console again. I may have to prioritize playing them, just so Nintendo has one more data point suggesting there's interest.

The Japanese Nintendo account says you can only use multiplayer linking to skip passwords.

Hopefully there's a better way when it actually comes out.

On a GBA, I understand that you could use two GBAs to transfer between your personal copies of the first and second game, bypassing the password system. However, in the Switch scenario...would this only work if you were trying to give a friend access to your save data? Or could you be logged in on two different Switch systems and transfer to yourself? I see the value in the GBA scenario, but I'm trying to understand how this works on Switch and how much value this feature would have for most people, assuming most people aren't using this save transfer system for anyone but themselves.

This reveal might be the biggest insult by a major gaming company in the past decade. I literally screamed "FUCK YOU" at my screen. I knew they said it wasn't going to be Mr. Pants but the hype they created made me think they were just going to surprise us with it anyway. Absolutely unacceptable to do this to us. Once they knew Mr. Pants was expected, they should've cancelled the announcement.

Of course, they had to release it when i had just started a save on my handheld lol.

Well, i can stream it at least

Never played Golden Sun, but I am super glad Nintendo is ripping off the bandaid and releasing multiple games in a series at once.
Hope that happens with the GBA F-Zero trilogy, cause man I don't want to wait another year after only getting Maximum Velocity which was promised almost a year ago now.

Cool to release both at once! I might upgrade at some point this year and work through all the games on the Expansion I'm interested in.

They're not releasing Mr Pants on NSO because they're releasing a HD remake instead. My sources tell me they've had it ready for months now and are sitting on it for when there's a gap in the schedule.

Nice that they're dropping both at once. Not super interested in replaying them but they're both great games and well worth checking out of you haven't already.

They can (and have once before) set things up so that the app starts up a second instance in the background to orchestrate link cable transfers on a single Switch. They just have seemingly chosen not to do that this time, based on how they're describing the process. For whatever reason, they only seem to bother when link cable is the only option, because the Oracle games would have benefited from that setup as well.

Really happy to see those two games added to the service and hopefully a bunch of people give them a chance and try them out.
I replayed both GBA games and Dark Dawn on the DS recently so I probably won't be touching the NSO releases anytime soon but I can say that the games are classics and I love how Psyenergy is used to solve puzzles in the overworld and seeing the cool summons equipped Djinn can give you

They don't actually. The Fire Emblem method was a full hack specifically to not have a second emulator instance, and it worked really well.

That's not what I understood and I tried to read it 20 times.

The japanese blog post shows link cable transfer only with another player, and for single player, the use of the password system. That's it.
Ok, I guess I'll have to spam my friends to make them activate a transfert from Golden Sun 1 then.

Very much looking forward to playing these again, but honestly kinda surprised we haven't got the Mario RPG treatment with these games. Plays to nostalgia, wouldn't cost a huge amount, within Camelot's current capabilities. Seems a bit of a no brainer to me, but I'll take this for sure.
The last good games made by Camelot.

Don't @ me.
But Mario Golf Toadstool Tour was released in 2014........

Tennis Aces was 2018

Very cool. These were some of my favorite games when they came out and I haven't played them in at least 15 years.

I'm not sure if I'll have time to play them anytime soon but I'm glad that they're available.

Yes, and not a good game. I don't make the rules.

Neato! Played a bit of the first on Wii U but it didn’t hold me tbh. I think the true portability of the Switch will really help it though. Glad they released both at once.

I loved the Golden Sun games back in the day, can't wait to replay them after all these years. While I played several RPGs on the GBC it was Golden Sun and Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis that cemented my opinion that RPGs are better on handhelds.

I literally shot awake this morning thinking, "I gotta play a shitload of Chained Echoes over the next few days so that I'm all set to rip Golden Sun!" What an age we live in.

One of the best class systems ever. Credit to MrEmptySet on Reddit for the chart.
Also, Shovel Knight goes hard in these games:

Glad to see it's not just 1 title but not great that nintendo is still averaging less than 1 new GBA game per month (9 new games over 11 months for JP/HK, and only 8 new games for US/PAL/KR).
