I'm sorry to ask but I missed the discussion around their release... how is the emulation on the latest N64 batch?
  • Jet Force Gemini is a bit harder than on original hardware because of the better framerate (and therefore a bit faster)
    • EDIT: Oh yeah the widescreen mode is terrible because the original game actually uses letterboxing to fit widescreen in 4:3 (so it's bad in original hardware) and the emulator widens that... and it's bad
  • Harvest Moon 64 looks like shit and has like, 2D graphics that are filtered and pixelated it's just a super weird mismatch. Other people don't seem to be bothered by this but I am.
  • 1080° Snowboarding: Still haven't tried but probably is the game that felt the least amount of bullshit emulation wise

What are the vibes people are feeling? I think this week is the earliest we could see an update, but I could just as easily lean towards NES/SNES/GB update for next week and save the Expansion Pass stuff for an NSO roadmap in the Direct.

Meant to reply yesterday, sorry.

Anyway, I think we get an NES/SNES/GB update sometime between now and the next direct. GBA will get the next couple of expansion pack updates. I think N64 takes a break until at least March. Genesis is a big "who the heck knows" at the moment.

As for the direct, we might get a GBA or N64 roadmap, but I wouldn't bet the house on it.

See this is why I am sure we're not getting Genesis updates anymore.

Yeah I’m pessimistic about future Genesis updates too.

I’m gonna try to be optimistic and say it’s because M2 (who handles the Genesis updates for NSO) is busy getting their PC-Engine/TurboGrafx emulator running on Switch for a new NSO app that’ll drop during next month’s Direct

Can anyone confirm if there's some amount of input lag on Super FX games on NSO? I was getting nostalgic for Stunt Race FX and while I definitely remember that game having an abysmal framerate, playing it in handheld mode felt like I was swimming in water. I got used to it eventually but I could've sworn the controls were more responsive on actual hardware back in the day.

I think this is the right expectations to have right now. There's still a bunch of things they can do with the NES/SNES/GB (especially if they were willing to splash the money to license the remaining BPS Tetris games) but I think GBA is going to be their main workhorse this year for the XP until they roll out another system. I'm with @Derachi that it'll be PC-Engine/TG16 now that someone else is handling MSX emulation via the eShop.

I like what @Derachi is thinking. I still don't think we get another system on the service until after the next system launches. 2024 is just going to be filling out the libraries.

It might well be that Mega Drive is done, though I don't want that to be the case. The last update came a few months after GBA arrived, while N64 additions have continued fairly regularly with some surprises (like Jet Force Gemini and Harvest Moon 64 being an international release). Who knows. Maybe Mega Drive drops to a couple of updates per year. Or Nintendo see GBA and N64 updates, plus access to the existing Mega Drive catalogue and first party DLC, as enough. But in terms of ongoing content, the Expansion Pack is currently slowing down with Mario Kart drops ended; if Mega Drive is ending too, then I think Nintendo will add more soon to make up for that. Look at the base tier - they've refreshed the 99 offering when those games come to an end (Pacman replaced Mario, F ZERO replaced Pacman), and have finally added GameBoy so that the base tier has another source of games other than the very sporadic NES and SNES drops.

I renewed for a discounted £25 thanks to Black Friday, so 2024's NSO+EP is essentially costing me £2 per month, so for that low price I think the overall package is worth it. I hope Nintendo get a move on with GBA, though, and add some more DLC at some point.

If Mega Drive is done, and so is Mario Kart, I think Nintendo might well refresh the Expansion Pack next month. A rough timeline so far:

  • October 2021: EP launches with N64 and Mega Drive
  • November 2021: Animal Crossing expansion added
  • March 2022: Mario Kart 8 DX Booster Course Pass begins
  • April 2022: Splatoon 2 DLC added
  • February 2023: GBA added
  • June 2023: Mega Drive additions end?
  • December 2023: Mario Kart 8DX BCP ends

Obviously, all the Kart and MD content is still available, but part of retaining and boosting EP subscriptions lies on adding content. If we're down to N64 and GBA updates being the only ongoing content, then the Expansion Pack is back to where it started in terms of reliable ongoing additions.

I think something will change next month. One of my pet theories for a while was that, if Nintendo Selects returned, they'd end up being subscriber only discounts on the eShop. Maybe that range launches next month but you have to be an Expansion Pack subscriber to get it. Sort of like an equivalent to voucher access on the base tier.

Mega Drive proved to be even more interesting.

At least 52!

And if you needed more proof that at least one additional NSO platform is coming, look at the first digit of the game IDs. SNES was 2, N64 was 3, MD is 5. Essentially; Game Boy is coming.

Obviously things can change, but fwiw, 52 games were originally datamined in the Genesis/Megadrive app, but we are currently at 45 games on the app. There is still room for growth.

I’ll allow it if they just release the entire first year of Jermey Parish’s Gameboy Works videos at once. Most of these games are literal 15 minute plays, so just put them on already Nintendo.
I really hope if LRG goes under that NoA would pick him up and make the Works videos official, integrate them into the NSO app, and then let him loose in the vault

Nah obviously it’ll be the sonic advance trilogy
Sonic Advance Trilogy, plus connectivity with the Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 HD 20th anniversary combo pack that will release this year out of sheer manifestation and hype 🙏🤞

Time for another Rare classic

I want all the Rare GBA (and GB/GBC!) to appear on NSO, including It's Mr. Pants, since they were neglected on Rare Replay and are likely not being rereleased elsewhere..

But I have to wonder if the original THQ publishing is hurdle... (same goes for Sonic games on GBA); I'd like to think that's not an issue, since there are other situations where the NSO versions are published by new companies entirely, regardless of the older publisher logo still appearing somewhere in the game
