Sure, but this was before Wii U. Nintendo isn't going to name it Switch P or Switch B because of the fear Wii U 2.0 will happen again.

Nintendo is also under new management, and the Switch 2 will be the first console since the N64 that doesn't have Iwata's name attached to it.
ok but why do you think Furukawa will call it Switch 2? Wii U is considered the absolute worst name for a Nintendo console ever but that doesn't mean they're suddenly going to change their naming structure after 1 mistake, and The Wii U biggest problem was how poorly they comminuted is was a wii successor, if the switch 2 is called switch advance but they communicate and market it right as a successor then It shouldn't be a problem

In terms of the 2024 Switch lineup, I feel like it's an easy mistake to assume that what we can see or predict today must be all that it's possible to get.

Like, okay, if Switch 2 comes in March 2024, then maybe we've already had our last Switch-only Direct and Princess Peach Superstar is their last big hurrah.

But if Switch 2 comes in May or September or November 2024? Then Nintendo can easily have a Switch focused Direct (or Direct Mini) to announce an updated roadmap of Switch games through to Switch 2 launch, which could easily include unannounced titles that we would never have thought of - whether they're ports or new games. If that roadmap ends in July 2024 with no sign of the Switch 2, Nintendo can have a June Direct to set out the roadmap through Q3. And so on.

TD;LR, as someone who 100% fell into the trap of thinking, "Nintendo have nothing announced after June 2023 so it's logical to assume the Switch 2 is imminent!", I have learned that Nintendo are capable of announcing a new roadmap of games to fill the period after the end of their current roadmap, and am determined to avoid falling into the same trap again, lol.

And what about… switch 3? :D

With the Switch Nintendo could have built a brand as strong as Game Boy or PlayStation. If they intend to keep the 'Switch' name for 2-3 or more generations, having a numbered name could be very helpful. 'Switch Advance' could work for the second iteration of the Switch, but after that, there's a risk of confusion (just look at the history of Xbox).

then add those to the replies next time
thankfully i wasn't replying to you originally, so there was no need (y)

Agreed. Nintendo is known for having short reveal to release timings. A February direct will happen with many Switch 1 announcements that will fill up the current gaps. Even after the Switch 2 is revealed, we will see game announcements for Switch 1 in directs.

I obviously don't know it for a fact but what I do know is Nintendo is going to make this as clear as possible, even with good marketing it can still be confusing. Switch 2 is directly to the point, and people will know right away what it is.

Calling it Switch Advance or Super Switch means they have to make sure they keep calling it the successor to the Switch and not just an upgrade; calling it Switch 2 is already confirmed that it's the next generation of Nintendo and not some "PS4 Pro or Xbox One X style upgrade."

And also what @Triistan said.

still think you're overselling the lack of intelligence of regular people, I think if most people can figure out the differences between 3DS and regulate DS a Super Switch wouldn't take long for 99% of people to figure out it's something different to regular switch

Sometimes it's best to just accept what works. Having a successful brand name and numbering the next major device is simple yet elegant.

Not a good comparison when the DS sold 150+ million units and the 3DS sold 75 million units.

There are people confused by the Xbox Series name.

Calling it something like "Switch Advance" also makes it harder for them to name the inevitable Switch 3 when the time comes. They'd have to keep making tacky names for each generation.

i can guarantee you the DS sold more than the 3DS wasn't because of the name and 75M is a great number at a time when phone mobile gaming was at its height

We are just going to agree to disagree.

name idea: Portable Station 6

we’ve got to steal the competition

Nintendo announces the PS6!

X game coming to PS6/PS6/XSX2

X game coming to PS6! - Which PS6?

Yeah, I feel like that's a trap a lot of people fall into. They still have a lot of stuff they can have next year to easily fill out the lineup until 2025 if they really want to. Notable rumors include:

  • 2D/3D DK (I've mainly seen "3D" be rumored, though that could have been mistaken for DK Freedom, way back in Summer of 2020, lol. I saw talk of a Wario Land VB remake/remaster that was meant to be on the 3DS around the same time, and that ended up actually existing, though only in the form of a pitch.) (Wario Land Source)
  • Twilight Princess and Wind Waker HD Ports
  • Metroid Prime 4 (Rumored to be alongside the "Pro")
  • Something relating to Smash Ultimate (Rumored to be alongside new hardware; we'll see if anything comes of it)
  • Black and White Remakes
  • F-ZERO GX Remake
  • Fire Emblem 4 Remake
  • Brand new 3D Mario (Unrelated to Odyssey, supposedly from 2019, rumored to be specifically for new hardware, though it could also be a Switch game if we somehow don't get new hardware next year.)
Stuff that's due for next year:
  • The next Mario Party
  • Camelot's next game
  • Mario and Sonic 2024 (If Camelot's game isn't a new Mario Sports game.)

With what we already know about 2024, we have five games slated for the year, first party wise. If we get even some of these next year, they can most definitely wait. The question is, what would they gain by doing so? If new hardware is backward compatible with the OG Switch, why would they feel the need to wait on releasing new hardware? It makes much more sense to me for them to try to get it out as soon as possible so they can meet the current hardware standards third parties have been developing with for over a decade now and so they can also innovate their games with more powerful tech.

My current thoughts are that we'll get a tease in November, a Switch-exclusive Mini in January, a Switch 2 Presentation in March, and a release in May. There's still a lot of stuff we're either meant to get that was rumored specifically for the Switch, like DK, or games that don't make sense to be a part of a big, next-gen push, like Mario and Sonic, for me to see the September Direct we got being the LAST Switch exclusive event. Maybe it was the last General, but I don't know why they would only start pushing for some of this stuff around the same time we would be getting a new 3D Mario revealed for new hardware. We got stuff like the LM2 Remaster revealed over a year from it's release specifically to avoid this issue... probably.

I realize I write really long messages sometimes lol, I apologize for that.

Frankly as long as they don't name it something that will actively confuse the majority and blow up in their face, or, ugh, "New Nintendo Switch", I don't really care what they call it.

I don't see "New Nintendo Switch" being a thing since NX is also known internally as "New Switch" because of INDY.

Some wishes/predictions for future second-party projects:

  • Camelot is preparing a new Golden Sun that serves as a psuedo reboot/remake of first 2 games. Its more or less a high budget effort though its a cross-gen title aiming for mid 2025.
  • NCube wil continue its strategy for Mario Party. First will be full next-gen using Switch 2 controller/console gimmicks, aiming for late 2025. Second will be a like Superstars, mix of old MP 4-9 minigames/boards.
  • Next Mario Sports title will be a collaboration effort between Nintendo/Camelot/Bandai-Namco, is an amalgamation of Tennis/Golf/Soccer/Switch Sports with Baseball and other sports.

There are people confused by the Xbox Series name.
In all fairness, that's because those names are just as stupid as the Wii U. It's the same names they used for the Xbox One revisions, just with Series instead of One.

Camelot needs to bring back the shining series, one of my favorite series back in the day, it needs a reboot

I think the name Wii U was bad but not for the reasons everyone thinks. The general public not realizing it was a new console instead of just an add-on was more the fault of misleading marketing rather than the "U" in the name.

One of the main reasons the Wii U name was bad was that the Wii brand was dying anyway. Even if they had called it Wii 2, it probably wouldn't have sold much better, because Wii was seen as a fad that came and went and had a massive decline in sales.

On the other hand, the Switch is still a big name, so Nintendo naming the next console anything that has Switch in the title will be fine as long as the marketing clearly communicates it's a new system and not an accessory.

You got the wish part right with Camelot lol

Honestly just call it Nintendo Switch Pro, short simple and easy for consumers and they will know its a upgrade
We’re getting silly now. We can’t get this message mixed up. We can’t get cute. It’s the next gen system- Nintendo Switch 2 or something that they’re marketing will make clear that this is a clearly different product

Yeah this is it. 100%

Now's the time to build the brand. Really hope MS does better with their naming as well. Switch 2, Xbox Series S/X 2. dunno why the marketing departments of either company choose to make things harder

I think we consider that the Nintendo of previous generations, and the ones who just called their latest device "Switch OLED Model" have 2 very different styles of thinking when naming and marketing their devices.

They've learned what works and what doesn't work.......and what works is clear messaging that leaves zero room for ambiguity and confusion as to what the device is and what it offers.

Also if they want to keep up the Switch branding after this, then they have to consider how to communicate that shift as well.
It's easy to tell "Super Switch" is better than Switch........but it's not so easy to tell that "Switch Ultra" or "Switch Advance" will be better than "Super Switch" when third generation rolls around, nevermind the fourth, fifth and so on

A number is clear, it gets the message across, and it's future proof. If the Switch ecosystem is going to be a long term investment for Nintendo...I think Switch 2 is easily the best option

It's simple; take a page out of The Price Is Right's book and simply add a question mark after the name.

I’m sorry, but from an ad perspective “Switch 2” is an absolutely incredible name.

“Switch 2 Mario”
“Switch 2 4K”
“Switch 2 on the go”
“Switch 2 fun”
“Switch 2 adventure”

Switch 3 is much more awkward, but Switch 2 is an all time name.

Yess!

Didn't even think about that. Reminds me of PlayStation 4 The Players (but way better).

Wasn't it rumoured that Mario and Sonic is pretty much done?
Not to my knowledge, if there was, I don’t think there was any legitimacy behind those claims. There was a job listing by SEGA for an Olympics game earlier this year, and I think if that was a separate thing from Mario and Sonic, we would of already seen it since they always try to get out those games the year before the actual Olympics.

I do get why they would want to hold back since we already have 3 Mario games this Holiday, though December is empty, why not have it then? They can release successful games in December. Nothing is really stopping them. It's a weird situation. I think it could point to it being like a 3DS "Mario Sports Superstars" situation, where they launch it the same month as new hardware so they can just forget about it.

Regarding 17.0 Firmware Update datamining:

It removes references to NX in syscalls and adds support for additional touch ICs.
In other words, it's being prepped for a non-NX console with a new screen.
This is the first time NX has been removed- ever
They had NX syscalls since 1.0.0
17.X.X+ move to N or Nn (Nintendo)
And new sleep mode settings (unused)

😘

Your excuse of the new Peach game being a game "just for girls" is ridiculous. Not being offensive, but that is literally a mindset of a child.

Peach isn't big enough to be a launch title for Switch 2, but it is still a fairly big game for Nintendo, and could very well sell better than Prime 4. The Mario Movie was a great success, and Peach was a core part and highlight of the film. She has renewed interest.
if Princess Peach Showtime sell well(like 4/6 milions units), this game could be a start of new franchise, a franchise dedicated to Peach, just like Luigi Mansion is a franchise dedicated to Luigi, and also giving incentive for Nintendo to make a Bowser focused franchise

Nice but wrong thread
To be fair, it points to them prepping for something soon that could relate to new hardware. However, I will say even if it were due to new hardware, there would be no reason to remove the NX naming for the OG Switch files, so that's weird. Maybe they're really going to plan on having the Switch be more of an iPhone line or something, so they changed the name to reflect that. I don't really know why else they would do this.

I've been thinking about what big multiplayer game they would want to focus on would be, and while I was thinking Smash, Mario Party fits that bill perfectly. I forgot that there's a high likelihood of them adding more gimmicks to the controller. They did say they want to "reinvent" it, but I hope they don't stray too far from the traditional controller, or else that might deter third parties.

also Wii U reveal trailer was terrible(giving people a sense this is a new acessory for Wii, controller repeated severals times on the trailer)

Best argument I've heard for 2, exceptional marketing potential

Could be that the 2witch will be called the Nintendo x-something, so they're removing references to what would be an incorrect abbreviation

The Smash rumor didn’t come from anyone reputable, so I wouldn’t hedge your bets on that if I were you. They’ve likely already moved on to the next game.
