Discussion Paper Mario coming to NSO Expansion Pak 12/10

We don't actually know how many people brought the expansion pass, if its to their expectations, without dislikes, Nintendo won't know that people don't like just 1 N64 game at a time.

YouTube dislikes aren't carrying the weight you think they are. Nintendo knows whether or not people like a product of theirs based on how it sells compared to their projection.

Best thing you could do to show that you dislike their N64 NSO tier is to not buy it.

We already have, last year.

Kidding aside, TOK is better than SS and CS, but that's not saying much of anything. New Paper Mario still a fundamentally flawed series (e.g. pointless exp system, half-baked RPG mechanics) that's creatively always going to be in the shadow of its former self.

It'll always feel that way in comparison

The only Mario RPG I've beaten is Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga and I had a wonderful time beating TOK

It's a good game if you just try not to compare it to TTYD and enjoy it for what it is. It helps that I loved the battle system and never wanted to skip any battles

The Paper Mario games will always be compared. There’s nothing wrong with that. We compare games of every series within their series. Paper Mario is nothing different.

Tbh since its the switch, I don't think that's enough because I feel enough people will but to meet Nintendo's expectations

Given the difficulty in accurately emulating Nintendo 64 games, I'm glad they're taking it slow.
While I'm all for quality over quantity, I don't believe this is why they are taking it slow. All of the previously highlighted emulation issues across the service (texture seams, lack of fog, input delay to name but a few) point to one emulator having been developed to run all the games on the service generically. It doesn't appear they have been optimising games on a per title basis--why else would OoT, absolute flagship that it is, run the way it does?

I chuckled when I saw this announcement. For those old enough and from the UK, you will get this reference:

"Monsieur, with zis Rocher you are really spoiling us!"

First thing that came to my head was that old advert.

P.S. here is the advert in all its glory. Total cheesefest:

All I know is that even the most cutting edge N64 emulators (GLideN64, ParaLLEl) have problems with input lag, lighting, fog, and weird edge cases. Take this one Paper Mario boss, for example. There is currently no ideal emulator, official or not.

(Angrylion/CEN64 have extremely high accuracy, but they pretty much need a render farm to run smoothly.)

The N64 library isnt exactly huge and the good games arent that many so them dropping a single game isnt that surprising or even a bad thing to me. Now if they can only be somewhat consistant with their releaeses that would be neat.

I'll definitely play this one once my backlog slims down a bit.

Dropping a single game at a time is fine if it's a great game that will take some time to finish, which are both true for Paper Mario. Hopefully they do realize this, and drop the lousier games in bigger bundles or preferably just along some better game.

I don’t even mind the price since I share it with three (soon to be four) other people but one game in 2 months is seriously pathetic. Makes the rather hefty price increase look even more unjustified than it did when the Expansion Pack launched. Even taking the emulation difficulties of N64 games into account, there's still stuff on the other systems missing. It feels like Nintendo wants to have a subscription service without the kind of work that's required to maintain it.

Yeah I'm really glad I have a family plan because otherwise this would be a straight racket.

Awesome game, but I wish we would at least get 2...
I just really want to play the N64 version of Majoras Mask again...

This is wii U era drip feeding once again.

It's worse because on the Wii U we weren't paying for a subscription. There weren't new games, but you also weren't losing value for something you had already paid.

Drip feeding the NES and SNES games was one thing, since the subscription fee was mainly for using online services and the games were a bonus. But the expansion pack fee is solely for the games, so if people aren't getting new games, there's no point in paying. They apparently don't understand how subscription services work if they think 1 game every month will fly it.

Frustrated but not that surprised by this. Maybe we'll get news on other titles coming this month, or perhaps Nintendo will update other systems next month, or go to 1 N64 title a month, or something like that. But as it is, 1 game, no matter how good, isn't good enough for what they're charging.

I'm glad I only paid £10 for my sub, and I've had my money's worth already thanks to Gunstar Heroes, Mean Bean Machine, Star Fox 64, Mario Kart 64, and Phantasy Star IV. But Nintendo should do better with a premium sub. Here's hoping we at least get some emulation improvements - I'd like to play Ocarina of Time through Switch but have been holding off.

So many things are weird about this. They put out a trailer over a week before releasing the game on the service. They announced just one game. No SNES/NES games. This is just...bizarre.

It could be fine if it turns into a monthly thing. That would actually be kind of cool - give each game the spotlight and release things regularly just like Xbox/Playstation do on their services. They could even announce another game next week that drops on the 10th as well.

Or this could be it for 2-3 months like normal.

While I'm thinking about it...was it ever mentioned if we're getting more Genesis games in the future? I admittedly haven't even downloaded the app for the Genesis games, but I'd still like to know.

Yessss I just got a sub a few days ago! Can’t wait to kick my namesake’s ass and recruit the Best Woman, Watt!

Is this that surprising? Even counting the Rare games, that N64 library is absurdly small, at least for the quality games. Much like the Wii U. I expected 1 or at best 2 games per update.

So I have no issue with that. However, I want more Genesis and SNES and NES games. I still want Startropics 2 dammit!

Paper Mario N64 is an excellent game. I'm still waiting for Konami's N64 games though, those are so good.

Ive never played the original paper mario. This is great news for me. While i am dissapointed in nintendo’s continued drip feed tactics, at least this will be a good rpg that should keep me busy for a bit. Actually i was so turned off by ocarina of times emulation that i just went ahead and started up the 3ds version again, same with starfox 64 (but in that case i just prefer the 3ds version with gyro controls) lol

I'm surprised they didn't add another Genesis game as well. I don't mind a drip-feed format but this definitely seems much slower than it should be.

FYI they have 36 games in the code(so 27 post launch planned)

So I expect at least 15 of those to be Quest 64 ;)

I kid, I kid. I loved my N64 for the bit over a dozen really great games. But that said, it’s my least f sprite Nintendo console. Not so much because of the small library, because I’m a Wii U truther, which also had a small but fantastic library, but while the library was small, it had a solid eshop with wonderful indie games and a solid virtual console.

I always felt the N64 had incredible highs, but incredible lows. Personally speaking.

Same. I wish I could buy this as I've never played it, but I'm not subscribing to NSO let alone the expansion pack just for it.

I get it, but in the end I and everyone I know barely pay 10 bucks a year to get a spot in NSO+expansion pack Family sub for a year… for what’s on offer it’s nothing really. Paying a full 50 is another matter, fuck that lol

As long as they keep offering the family sub and keeps working they way it does now, I’m happy.

I’m excited, but I’m also looking at this pile of JRPGs I haven’t finished. Yet Paper Mario is better than all of them so…

If there are actual fixes to the emulator, then that would be nice.

Yeah, that's what I'm waiting for. I'm going to go in once there are more controllers out. I don't want to play N64 games without the controller, hopefully things are finished by then.

I really hope they don't roll these games out one per month.

That being said I love Paper Mario so I will steamroll through this one.

One a month would actually be pretty solid vs one for each of the 5 updates we get a year

I just reminded that Paper Mario is on the Wii VC and I do, in fact, own a Wii U. I've never played the original PM before, I think i'll buy it. How is the emulation on the Wii u?

Do you really think three games would make you subscribe? If you haven't already, I'm not sure why you're expecting a single update to make you want to jump in.
Sony and Microsoft's paid online services give out 3 or so relatively new games for free, to own, every single month. Most of them aren't even first party so deals need to be worked out with publishers for them. Now I like Nintendo's games way more than most of the free PS Plus or Xbox Live stuff so to me even old Nintendo games beat modern random 3rd party PS/Xbox games, but they should at least be trying to make the service comparable. Not to even mention the bad emulation quality and that no real comment has been made by Nintendo on that. Are they going to trickle out one game a month and then the games themselves are scuffed on top of that? Are they actually planning on fixing any of the many reported issues with the games already on there?

Worse than NSO with a dark filter
