StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (New Staff Post, Please read)

2k is 2048x1080 and always be. now that you think 2k is 1440p is part of the problem for the ones that didnt get it and keep use it as true. I had work in animation, cinema, publicity and now in videogames.

4K was actually kind of a clever name to brand 3840x2160 TVs.

Because if you just call them 2160p, then consumers might think "oh, just twice as many pixels"

But 4K is almost representative of something (the 3840 horizontal pixels per vertical pixel) while also showing that the TVs have four times as many pixels as 1080p TVs.

Actually like the name 4K a lot, it's good.

2k is a quick way of writing "talk", which is used online or in texts to save on characters. The term combines the "t" from "2" and the "k" to sound like "talk". 2k may be confusing, since it is also commonly used for "2000." Also, it only removes 2 characters, which makes it not much of an abbreviation.

what

...what?

Have other people verified that this Chinese post was actually posted back in January and not a fake screenshot made with info we already have?

Sorry, the skeptic in me wants to be sure this isn’t a fake. Because if it really was posted in Jan. then it’s actually pretty convincing and I would buy the theory that it’s from materials sent out to potential partners like Activision.

Worth noting that 4K refers to 4096 * 2160 as well as 3840 * 2160.

Anyway, I hope the next Switch supports VRR when docked as well as HDR. It would be fantastic.

One topic for our spare time, please take it with a grain of salt.

Another Korean source also said that T239 is produced at 7LPH (8LPH+). Also it seems to think that the TSMC 5nm rumor is a leftover from Atlan.
7LPH(8LPH+)
It seems to be no improvement in area, just more improved performance. If what I perceive is correct, do not want to do 8 nm marketing and call it 7 nm because it has improved, it seems to be like this.
저분이 T239는 확실하다고 하나요?
일단 T239는 삼성파운드리에서 양산중인거같더군요
수율도 좋은듯한
Does he say he's sure it's T239?
First of all, it looks like T239 is being mass-produced by Samsung Foundry.
Yield seems to be good.
일단 봐야겠네요
T239 자체는 8LPH+(7LPH?)로 뽑고 있거든요
I will have to see.
T239 itself is selected as 8LPH+ (7LPH?).

the reason I don't believe this is because they're talking about marketing. 8nm is a dead node now and Samsung moved on

Could there be some lag between when chip was scrapped, and when they would have new devkits based on newer SOC ready? They might not have requested recall of devkits until the newer devkits were ready, thus a bit of lag?
absolutely but given when the SOC seems to have been complete it's perfectly reasonable this was the target spec for the system supposedly to be released late 22-1H 23.

the Korean talk is at least something a bit different to the norm. what really we need is a Sfuncle (Samsung Factory Uncle) to give the full lowdown. poster in that thread seems to think TSMC is in fact more expensive than what is believed.

'Looking at overseas comments, it is interesting to see that there is a perception that is different from reality regarding the price of TSMC 5nm and NVIDIA's infamous custom chipset cooperation.'

I see. Good 2k.

Just a question, earlier in the year I think it was stated that the Nvidia leak showed tests in the NVN API for an Ampere based chip with clocks like

660 MHz - 2 TFLOP
1.1 GHz - 3.45 TFLOP

(undocked and docked) ... whatever happened to that?

Was that legit or not?
So, only to know, if switch NG has 2 TFLOP on portable mode, are these better or worse than the 1.8 TFLOP of Ps4? A ampere at 2 TFLOP are not exactly as good as a GCN architecture with 2 Tflops, or I'm wrong?

The Switch successor, judging by the rumoured screen specs, is bigger than the current one. In theory, it could pack a bigger battery, a bigger cooling system and a bigger SoC. But sadly, each of this element on its own impact its price negatively.

The process node used doesn't just influence the SoC price, but also the quantity of copper used for the colling system and the size of the battery the unit is equipped with. These costs can add up quite a lot.

I'm believed more to 8nm right now. Nintendo will reducing frequency of the CPU & GPU to save battery life. I'm hoping around Steam Deck power (1.6 Tflops) in handheld. DLSS only in tv mode

someone probably already posted it but this article repeats a couple of rumours re the node and the 1280 core thing.

maybe i missed it in this thread but another poster was saying '7LPH(8-nanometer improved version)' last week. could it be possible the 1536 core count taken as gospel from the leak isn't the final spec for whatever reason? and a 1280 core Drake can hit the performance goals on a non 5nm node. the system would be slightly bigger (which is appears to be) but that node is actually a decent improvement on the worst case scenario. just trying to make the pieces fit in this alternative scenario.

8nm would make things more problematic though on that front (battery life). 5nm allows Nintendo to spend less on cooling elements and go smaller size, etc.

Why must we constantly go around in circles about chip size and their so-called specs. Just know it’s going to be way better than your Nintendo Switch and should receive more 3rd party support as a result. The real question at hand should be what is Nintendo doing differently that won’t be able to be easily duplicated by other companies. There’s a lot of portable systems out there now and more releasing everyday. So trust me when I say there’s a big component missing to their new console that differentiates it from the other hybrid/portable systems, and no I’m not talking about their IP.

Will the new Joy-Con be like this or is it already known what they will look like?

We don't know, but the idea is starting to come together:

They won't be like the current Joy-Con, nor will they be like a "hinged" Joy-Con like that patent. They'll be similar in form and function, but not the same. They'll likely be wider, with a grip at the rear, and much larger L and R buttons.

The most striking feature we have any evidence of is that the face buttons on the Joy-Con will not be black, and instead adopt the Super Famicom colour scheme, where ABXY correlate to Red, Yellow, Blue, Green. We see this in several upcoming titles.

One factory worker describes them as "ugly".

given the sort of visuals they're wanting to push (Matrix Demo) seems DLSS will be integral to both handheld & docked mode. handheld mode would be in trouble if everything needed to be native 1080.

What's odd to me is the "sources" (if one can call those that) used in that article, the tweets from harukaze5719, Tech_Reve, and KittyYYuko, none of those were responding to anything that mentioned "Nintendo" or "Switch 2".

I'm not an expert on nvidia architectures (I learned a lot from this forum, appreciate it!), but when I look at harukaze5719 and Tech_Reve exchange, it looks like the context is talking about Orin GPU in general? What would that have to do with Nintendo or Switch 2, considering of course Nintendo/nvidia is going with custom SoC (the T239)?

Although in KittyYYuko's case - despite that not responding to anything "Nintendo" or "Switch 2" or mentioning that in the tweet itself, it has been pointed out to me by others here there's no other GPU that fits the description, so it was assumed the tweet was about Switch 2 SoC, or something along those lines, that I don't fully understand.

i saw that too, the 7LPH comment doesn't seem to be a response to anything. but the replies are referencing SteamDeck so it seems like the discussion is around Switch2?

DLSS in one mode defeats the purpose of even having it. and I've yet to see someone make a convincing argument for no DLSS in handheld mode

upscaling and RT are gonna be critical features for Drake. if it can only be done in one mode, then they're better off not having either

Seamless graphic switching between docked and handheld is a pretty good feature. Require developers to support that feature and not something those companies can enforce. Unless you like going into the graphic setting every time you switched.

I guess they will be adapted more to the older audience and not to children since this will be the "premium" console. As for me I wish the console was not backwards compatible as they will continue to make many games compatible with the Switch and I fear they will not take full advantage of the power of the Swicth 2. I hope it won't be like PS5-PS4.

I will repeat:

What.

...what?

There's just no correlation there. Backwards compatibility does not hold games back. Games that can't run on Switch simply won't be brought to Switch, and games that can have no reason to be locked to next gen.

Yup.

I'll keep hammering this point over and over now that I actually own a Steam Deck. It's a great handheld. It's not a hybrid. The seamlessness remains the Switch's best feature. No PC handheld can match this.

The Deck is the most convenient of them because of Valves customization, but it's still layers and where of trying to get Windows games running on a Linux PC. There's plenty of jank still. Half the time my Steam button doesn't work when docked, lol.

(edit: learned Zippo is not to be trusted and is permabanned from here, so treat this accordingly)

Grain of salt and all that.

We know 3D Mario on Switch 2 is a near-certainty (duh). Talks about "open world" approach for the next 3D Mario game.

Here we go. I know only a few things at this moment in time.

-Firstly, it's going to be our very first open world 3D Mario game. Given Zelda and Pokemon have taken the plunge, it was only a matter of time before the portly plumber did as well.

-This game will NOT be a sequel to Odyssey, so if you were expecting that, don't. This is going in an entirely different direction.

-I've been told the game looks "Absolutely jaw dropping." If you thought Mario Vs. Donkey Kong looked good, then you haven't seen anything yet. EPD Tokyo are about to blow people's fuckin' minds yet again.

-Lastly, this will be THE GAME for Nintendo next year. Mario will be a day one Switch 2 game, and I would bet serious amounts of money that this will be the very first game that we will see running on their shiny new system. This will be the first 3D Mario game to be a launch title since 1996's Super Mario 64, which means this is a big freaking deal. Expect a very strong launch lineup from Nintendo and third parties alike.

seems like Bowser's Fury was a prototype for what was coming next.

there's quite a lot of people who think 3D Mario will not be a launch title but i don't agree. if this is the primary pitch for the system it'll be day 1.

I don't trust him when he says "day one", like it'll be a launch title, but I'd love to be proven wrong. What I DO like is "next-gen is almost here".

March moment.

When March is the moment.

I think the pitch will be a mix of things.

One, this report states that Mario Vs. DK and Showtime SHARE AN ENGINE with NG Mario- they're perfect platforms to demonstrate NG patches if true.

Two, the NG Mario is supposedly jaw-dropping.

There's your pitch:

Play your Nintendo Switch games, better than ever, AND play all new experiences not possible on Nintendo Switch. One device, one brand, Super Nintendo Switch.

Only 15 pages to go!

Im on #TeamWhenIt'sDone btw, but I do like the prospect of an early November reveal, though even if it were the case, it may not be the same kind of reveal like we got with Switch. It could simply be an acknowledgment that the Switch 2 exists, and a full reveal will occur at a later date.

Another possibility is a full reveal of the device itself, but unlike Switch, no release date. Just similar footage, the name, and the device itself.

Yeah, hence why I mentioned "grain of salt".

Mind going into details why he shouldn't be trusted? I was going through his older blog entries, he did get some things right, but then again, it could very well be making several predictions and one of those is bound to be correct kind of thing.

This one mentioned 2D Mario, Paper Mario TTYD remake back in May. Assuming the blog entry was not added "after the fact"

Games that cannot be made run on Nintendo Switch won't magically become compatible because Nintendo waves a magic wand, while games that can probably should, it helps their business position. Furthermore, if they're cross gen releases rather than just backwards compatible, the argument for NG Switch improves, since each of those games now de-facto "plays best on NG Switch", a powerful marketing term.
