Pre-Release Metroid Prime 4: Pre-Release Discussion Thread

People only want what they know. Nobody wanted Metroid Prime when it was a thing. If Retro feels like they can do justice to an open world Metroid Prime then I’m all for it.

If IIRC:

  • DKVine said that next Retro game was going to be show at E3 2015 but Nintendo pulled it off at last minute. It was a WiiU that started development at late 2013 when Tropical Freeze was finished.
  • One guy on other forum (who told details of MP1 remaster) said that the game was a 3D action game. At first it was based on an Nintendo IP but evolved into its own thing.
  • they probably continue working on that game, the project was passed to switch sometime in 2016 (early?), I imagine that Nintendo aimed to be a 2017/18 game.
  • Things happened and Retro cancelled the game, likely around early 2017. Then they decided to port their backcatalogue to swtich.

regarding MP4, I think the game will feature more open areas than Prime Trilogy, we are talking about games that were designed for a 1999 hardware vs 2014 hardware + 36 times RAM (3.25 GB vs 88 MB).

MP4 should have a massive jump in image quality. Especially on Dane hardware.

Is DKVine even reliable?

Always wondered this. Only ever remember them from some stuff they said about Nintendo/Sakurai when K.Rool didn’t happen. (It was’t pretty). But that was 6ish years ago.

Bandai's Prime 4 wasn't coming together as well as they had hoped. Essentially, it was a case of too many cooks in the kitchen.
I wonder if this was an issue of Bamco's management and subcontracting subcontracts. splitting games up is a well known method that even Nintendo employs

I hope the reason why no insider give us lot of details about Retro's canceled project is because they wanna go back to it one day.
I'm even more excited to see what they cooked for Prime HD remaster and 4 now.

As someone who personally knows the people who run the site, they would at the very least not bullshit about things they heard (or didn't hear). But their sources could be bunk of course.

I can verify a couple of things they knew were definitely true several years ago, but not with Retro per se.

In a new interview with an ex-retro employee (I don't remember the specific one, there were a bunch recently updated on YouTube, sorry) on the kiwi talks channel, prime 3 was originally going to be open world but had to be scaled back due to the wii's hardware.

Time will tell when it comes to this new DK game being revealed, but to say the least, I believe they were talking about it even before I remember Nate and others were back at the old haunt.

I wouldn't be surprised, though. When I used to be an active lurker, I was under the impression that whatever connections DKVine may have, thanks to their laser-focused pursuits on their choice of fandom, it was through links where some date backs decades.

Interesting. Retro sounds like a place of well keep secrets (lack of a better word).

Just something I wonder since specific fan sites on specific IPs can be iffy.

Thank you

I know of someone there who had a contact in Retro at some point, but that's it, I can't verify any of the information personally.

So I might take some of their stuff with a grain of salt, but they're not trying to hoodwink anybody.

Nah. I don’t think they’re trying to play folks. Just sometimes when leaks that sound great for ones favorite IP happen, sometimes we think with our hearts then our heads and it blinds us.

The new DK stuff just sounds too good to be true for fans. While I personally don’t think any DK game is happening, there are reasons to believe for the Ip could happen since Nintendo is making a theme park for it.

I don't think anybody has ever said it's actually a 3D game.

Didn’t we hear another company was working on DK, but it got canned and Nintendo is now making DK at EPD.

We heard Retro was working on a 3D Action game (note Nintendo does call their 3D Mario games “3D Action” too”. It was said the Retro game started off as a Nintendo IP, then veered away from it and eventually got canned.

Is there a correlation here being Retro was making a 3D DK game and it eventually fell apart. And Nintendo decided to do it themselves, but from all the rumors it’s said they’re developing a 2D DK game.

All this info about Bamco being upset that their version of Metroid Prime 4 got canned, so they decided to go out for revenge by leaking Retro's Prime remasters, sounds a bit... sensationalized. Not saying it's untrue, but it's definitely a shocker to read about.

That's true, but I'm only one person. My sources don't know everything that Nintendo's working on.
Have there actually been any Nintendo games since the launch of the Switch that you were completely unaware of?

I’m sure it wasn’t some big revenge plot, but maybe people were probably like “fuck it, we’re off the project anyway”

Honestly? Advance Wars was one of the rare times where I've been completely unaware of an upcoming game.

That's probably the only time where I've been caught off-guard. Maybe that means WayForward is better at keeping secrets than Nintendo?

I knew about Astral Chain.
I knew about Metroid Dread.
I knew about Life is Strange.
I reported on Labo VR at NWR.
I knew about Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee releasing in 2018.
I knew about Smash Bros releasing in December 2018.
I knew about Mario + Rabbids.
I knew about Paper Mario: Color Splash on the Wii U.
I knew about Mario All-Stars. ("Good Year To Be A Plumber", "Insane year for ports")

If a DK game exists, then my contact just hasn't heard about it. It's as simple as that.

Phew. You've got quite the track record. Pretty amazing stuff.

I know that you know really well.
I want to believe that the 2DDK that EPD is developing is real, but I'm a little bit worried.😅

Nintendo released SM3D World DX the same month as they open their Universal Park.

There is a DK expansion schedule for sometime in 2024 (summer?).

That the year EPD will release their Donkey Kong game.

I suppose EPD + 1Up Studio + NST has the capcity to handle 2 projects, a new 3D Mario and DK game, probably sharing some assets (?).

3D World and SNW opening up together was merely a coincidence brought on by the pandemic. I wouldn't read into it.

Well , pre-covid, Universal Park was going to be opened by August, same month as Olympics.

And SM3D DX was originally going to be released late october 2020, the spot was occupied by Pikmin 3 DX.

My point is that the next DK game will released near the opening of Universal expansion. It can be the same month, or 2 months early or later.

There's no way a DK game would take 6-7 to release. Rumours are pointing out that it started development in 2018.

EPD8 works in conjunction with NST and 1Up Studio. Their output has been:

FY2017/18: Super Mario Odyssey
FY2018/19: Captain Toad Treasure Tracker + DLC
FY2019/20: Nothing
FY2020/21: Mario 3D All Stars (with NERD help) and Mario 3D World + Bowser Fury
FY2021/22: Nothing

We don’t whats happening on FY2022/23 but Nintendo has announced lots of games for next year, including big sellers like Splat 3 and Zelda BOTW sequel. Don’t think their next game will be released there. Its already crowded. Thats why I think they will pulled their projects in FYs 2023/24 and 2024/25 back to back.

2022 won't be too crowded for DK. 3D Mario maybe, but not DK. It's not a big blockbuster.

I'b disappointed if EPD8 can't release a brand new game in FY2022/2023. Bowser's fury was good but it wasn't a full game that required 3-4 years of development.

Yeah, at the very least, take solace in the notion that Nintendo has been doing big things with DK in recent years:

  • K. Rool's return in Smash was not only just a thing to make fans happy; he's been one of the new characters that's been making the most appearances in later showcases, as if to make sure he doesn't fade to the back again
  • So much so has DK been important to Nintendo, that he's getting his own attraction at the theme park
  • DK (voiced by Seth Rogen) will not only be featured in the upcoming Mario film, signs point to he'll get his own film, soon enough

It all seems to lead to the inevitable notion that the only thing left is to release a new flagship DK game to rally the brand around as the ideal "new standard" for the brand going forward.

DK was also separated from mario merchandising wise

I came in here expecting Metroid Prime 4 and instead ya'll are talking about fucking Donkey Kong

I wonder if Prime Remaster and Prime 4 will have the same visual style, or be slightly different

I'm hoping they both maintain the aesthetic of the originals (just at a higher fidelity). That sharp, angular, clean sci-fi look.
