• Hey everyone, staff have documented a list of banned content and subject matter that we feel are not consistent with site values, and don't make sense to host discussion of on Famiboards. This list (and the relevant reasoning per item) is viewable here.

StarTopic F-ZERO 99 |ST| 99 racers collide with the wall, 99 racers collide. "POWER DOWN," 1 crashes out, 98 racers collide with the wall.

Really really hopeful all of this datamined content is actually planned and upcoming, and not just scrapped ideas. This game getting notable support beyond just adding the remaining OG tracks would be great.

Survival mode would be rad if it's what I'm imagining (races don't end after 4 laps, you just keep going until everyone else crashes or gets ranked out).

Out of curiosity, anyone know if Tetris 99 had this level of "stuff in the code that may or may not be cut content"? And if so, did any of that end up being the DLC?

Tetris 99 famously had a bunch of stuff patched in post release like the event themes, and even got paid DLC with offline and local multiplayer modes, and a physical release; but I don't remember if that stuff was in there since release, unused.

I need this to be a game that doesn’t disappear after a year
Why would it disappear after a year?

It's very likely going to stay.

Won Grand Prix and unlocked all Golden Fox skins. I've always been oddly competent at racing games despite not being passionate about them. This one is really fun though.

Yes, some of the post-launch modes in Tetris 99 were datamined at launch. Out of these three, two released in May 2019 (three months after launch) and the other released in September 2019 (four months after that). It’s a very good sign pointing toward these and the new tracks being a hint towards things to come and not just cut content. Expecting to hear something in the February Direct at the latest.

I know Tetris 99 is still around but with Pac-Man 99 and Super Mario 35 (this one I kinda understand) gone, it gave me enough concern.

But yeah I need this one to stick around for the long term bc it’s so good.
Mario always had an expiration date. Pacman seems to have fallen off fast post launch. It never seemed to catch on like tetris did. Personally I downloaded it and played it a time or two but I never stuck with it like I did for tetras and now f zero. Also being a Nintendo ip means they don't have to pay an external company to keep it going.

I'm loving this game and I do not like F-Zero at all, really. Liking it to the point that I put down Sea of Stars and Red Dead Redemption and just want to play this all the time. It's a brilliant idea and I think the SNES graphics work the best for it. Anything more complicated and I just don't think it would look appealing and would be too messy. With 99 vehicles there just can't be too many particle effects flying around. And Grand Prix? Amazingly addictive.

I would imagine user engagement is quite high on this one.

Nintendo is certainly bringing in A LOT of new players who've never experienced F-Zero before. I've always considered the original one of the best games Nintendo ever made and it's great to see it being celebrated in this way with a new twist. Everything they added to the experience is so tasteful and well thought out.

I'm not sure what the future holds for F-Zero but I'm fairly sure we'll see more of it.

As somebody who loves Pac-Man 99 it made me sad to see it fall off - but yeah, over the past year it's gotten progressively harder to get a match. Until early last year it was instant, it sometimes takes a minute or two now. I was pretty consistently getting top 5 there too..

As for F-ZERO - this is a lot of fun! I'm terrible (10 races and my top placing is 49..), but will give it a go and see if I can improve. I think I'm trying to play it too much like Mario Kart and it just doesn't work

Finally got my first win, and with an empty energy meter to boot! Right after I passed the finish line my vehicle ran into a red bumper and blew up, lol. Fun game.

Part of PAC-MAN 99’s problem was that Bandai Namco clearly insisted on making themes be paid DLC (with some being free) instead of having them be rewards for special events that occur periodically like in TETRIS 99 to give people incentive to actually come back and play the game from time to time. There was nothing like that in PAC-MAN 99, so of course not as many people stuck around to play it regularly… Fortunately F-ZERO 99 already has much more incentive to keep playing it than PAC-MAN 99 ever did, plus this one’s published by Nintendo unlike PAC-MAN 99, so I don’t think there should be any concern of it not staying online indefinitely like TETRIS 99 has.

Going by the speed of matchmaking this is doing well - still in the first week of course, but personally this might hit as hard as Tetris 99. Just incredible stuff.

So, Tetris had music and theme updates... It'd be fantastic if they introduced musical variants for the stages - a few of those are already in the vaults of course, from the sequel games and various Arrange albums. So now if people JUST KEEP PICKING MUTE CITY you'd get a different music track each time.

It's easy to forget but Pac Man 99 is getting removed after literally 2 years and a half and its removal was only announced recently so I totally think that game was supposed to stay but since there's not enough people for them to warrant leaving the servers around I just assume they wanna prioritize F-Zero 99 instead (which is just a much better game anyway).
Meanwhile Super Mario Bros. 35 we always knew from the very announcement that it would be only around for 6 months so I just think both are different cases.

I absolutely suck with the Golden Fox.

I've gotten good results with all vehicles, but with the Golden Fox I always get a great start only to fall behind the pack as the race goes on. This thing's just not fast enough.

Does anyone have any tips on how to succeed with it?

I think people forget that Pac Man 99 is not made by Nintendo. It's published by Namco, so I doubt Nintendo had any say in its removal.

You need to use your boost to stay at the front or as close to the front as possible for the entire race. I haven't won with it yet, but I've had 2 races on Death Wind I where I've finished the first 3 laps in first place and almost won, but then then just crashed out on the 4th lap.

I find it isn't really fast enough to benefit as much from the skyway, so I think you just want to use your energy meter purely for boosting while trying to be a front runner and staying ahead of the pack.

I also feel that strategy works best on Death Wind I, since the skyway doesn't give you as much of a leg up on that track.

Some things I can think of:

It's a risk/reward type of vehicle and you need to have the right mentality for it. You have to use boosts very liberally, like 3 or 4 times per lap, perhaps even more if you get KOs (unless doing so will kill you of course) and press every little advantage. Ideally you should be reaching the repair area on low energy every time, it won't matter that much because every visit is basically an almost full health refill. Good, efficient, and constant use of boosts can guarantee staying on the 1st position for the whole race despite the vehicle's lower base speed as long as you don't make mistakes, I've done it quite a few of times.

Energy is very precious for this ship and as such you should avoid being sandwiched at all costs, since it will chip away at it fast. Use boosts to break away from packs and use the spin attack to protect yourself. One of its greatest advantages is being able to recover fast from mistakes due to its superior acceleration + use of boosts but remember to watch your energy, it won't matter if using the boost will kill you (of course ideally you shouldn't make mistakes but you know). You can also apply this mentality to sharp turns that require you to slow down, just use boost as soon as you are done to get back to full speed.

Another great convenience is being able to use boosts to quickly overtake gray, red and blue obstacle cars while it's easy and safe to do so (eg while you are on a straight line and otherwise you would have to avoid them while making a sharp turn later). Especially with those shitty blue bumpers, players controlling them don't normally expect you to use a boost just to avoid them.

Also don't even bother saving skyway for optimal moments unless you are very close to them, just use them if you get them. The longer you go without using them, the less you will be boosting, something you really don't want to do with golden fox.

im hoping they have events for this game eventually, kinda like the tetris 99 maximus cups, with themes for new releases. give us cool little kirby decals for our ship, or badges to display on the pilot cards

Stop voting for Mute City and Big Blue every time, goddamit.
And DW I. Seriously DW I is garbage.

I hate the regular 99 races mode so much, only four races and SO barely gets picked even though it's the best track available.

Still gotta play it to farm tickets unfortunately.

This is why the Pro Tracks event exists, lol. Of course most people are gonna be picking the easier tracks, especially this early in the game’s life when everyone is still very new to the game.

I didn't play this yesterday and now I'm shit at it? Boohoo.
Never say complaining on the Internet doesn't work.

Won my first full 99 race at the outset of the Grand Prix, and then led the entire Grand Prix, winning the whole damn thing. Wahey!

I mean when the alternative is Death Wind I'll take it.

Though it's also true I spent an entire hour playing nothing but Mute City last night, lol. I'm hoping them adding more tracks helps with this.

Feels like I'm regressing hard with the Golden Fox. I wanna be aggressive with my boosts but I guess I can't keep playing like that lol.

I have to say, while the game is great my favorite part has been the pseudo time trials in the training room, beating the times to get the track background was a blast and I need more race tracks to be added. I can’t believe I’m having fun with an f-zero game.

yeah, it had been a while since I'd crashed out but boosting too much with the fox broke my streak

And like 10 minutes ago I finally get my first W! Golden Fox is kinda tough, I guess choosing the right times for boosts is super important.

It's not the same without the cacophony of crashing cars and recharging sound effects.

I love the role KOs play in this game, much as I hate being victim to one. Doing a pro race on Port Town II, I was staring death in the face on the final stretch of the 3rd lap. Either side of the transition from 3rd into 4th lap, though, I scored KOs - fully restoring my health, letting me boost through to the front of the pack, and just about finishing 3rd.

It's reet good this game is.

I hope, as they add more tracks, that they consider a weekly rotation for each mode, to increase variety. Also be interesting to see if they add more cars to choose from - though balance is obviously important.

I'm actually half torn on the extra cars thing now. After some playtime, the fact we basically have a very streamlined, condensed set of cars is actually pretty neat. You have the go-fast one, the sturdy one, the all rounder and the boosty one, and that's it.

I was remembering the absolute choice paralysis when trying to choose a car in later games, and maybe only having four isn't that bad. Unless they implement them as mostly cosmetic differences, then that would be neat.

On the other hand, I dream of them remaking some of the other F-Zero X/GX cars in SNES sprite style and that could also be very cool.

This game rocks. My best finish is 2nd place in a team battle -- 5th in an actual 99 race. I feel like I'll get that win eventually, just takes a pretty wicked combination of luck and skill.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't want to be overwhelmed with choice. Different cars that fit into the four sub categories could be one way around it, so there's even more aesthetic variety.

I do like that unlockables means you have more aesthetic variety even with just four different cars, though.
