Pre-Release Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (2024) — Pre-release Discussion Thread

Last time I played this, it was 15 years ago and I never completed it because of multiple reasons (I just wasn't enjoying it), but I know I'd like it playing it today.

That saying, I'm surprised this was announced before Mario RPG has come out.

This seems kind of unnecessary because the original game still looks great and this is just slightly different more than it is better. From what they showed I'm not sure why it wasn't just a port, hopefully they've done like... anything to justify the effort of remaking it. Will they even be brave enough to address Vivian in the English version now?

If nothing else the remastered soundtrack could be pretty sick I guess.

Also interested in the discourse of "maybe the Mario Shadow Council was right" when people get to see how weirdly horny this game was again.
Could be that the inconsistency of style between TTYD/Super to Origami King was enough that Nintendo felt remaking it would bridge the gap a bit more. Besides the visuals/jazzy remixes I'm also noticing other TOK influences like characters having unique sound effects for when they talk.

I mean in the grand scheme of things was dumb to assume a remake would entirely sanitize things but the Mario & Luigi remake is still a precedent for things being sanded down a bit, even if not to that insane a degree. Comparatively this trailer went out of its way to show all the weird shit in the original game plus even smaller stuff like the original Boo designs which I absolutely appreciate.

It'll be really bizarre now if the next new Paper Mario still has an army of mostly nameless identical toads and NPC's though; give me TOK's open-world design and style but with TTYD's plot and world-building!
The NPCs in TTYD are a lot more important and individualized to the story unlike the mario and luigi remake.

This better fucking sell well, I swear to god. Show Nintendo that THIS is the Paper Mario people want

The fact that it's a Switch game launching in the same year as the Switch successor, probably without any new content, does not bode well

I'm surprised they announced this Mario RPG return while still in the advertising cycle for the other Mario RPG return, if it wasn't going to be just a "buy this HD GameCube game today!" thing.

Given it's an HD update to a 20-year-old game not built around high polygon count, as long as it offers a higher res mode it won't seem particularly worse than if it was a Switch 2 release.

They probably used it on Pyoro
lmaoo I’m kinda glad Pyoro didn’t leak this! It was MAGICAL! 😭

Probably is a early 2024 game, probably April, or could maybe even share the March month with Peach or something.
I don’t think so. They would have specified, seeing as how announced titles were heavy up until April. I’m thinking October, like the OG version

Remakes usually sell less than new games and this is coming late in the Switch’s life so I doubt Nintendo’s own expectations are this high.
According to VGChartz, not very reliable, and as of December 2014, PMTTYD had sold 1,900,000 copies. This HD version can easily reach that.

They should add the Toad murder scene in the back alley from the Japanese version of the game.
Didn’t know this was a thing! 0_0

I’m babysitting my 2-year- old nephew today, so pretty much relegated to watching the Direct out of the corner of my eye whilst keeping him entertained. Heard that we hit the final announcement so I turned to check it out fully, immediately saw the book and SCREAMED. My nephew ran over to me and gave me a hug and some pats to make sure I was ok 😭

My favorite video game of all time is getting remade and it looks P E R F E C T!

if the sucessor it bc it will be fine

Nah, Nintendo just usually don't put release dates for games releasing in more than 6 months. And they tend to not announce games more than 9 months before their release (apart from a very few big games, or games that get delayed)
No way they announce a 1:1 remake of TTYD 13 months ahead of release.

I like their compromise to the white outline where it's sort of there but very thin and uneven to give the impression that the characters weren't cut out perfectly

Good points! I wonder what they’re waiting on to announce release date 🤔

I am not a huge Metroid fan, but even I am disappointing with this being the one last thing. It’s a remake of a Mario RPG game when we already have an announced one releasing soon. They should’ve waited on announcing this until february and given a teaser for Metroid Prime 4.

Nintendo often does that, especially for the September direct. They just announce it's releasing next year, and suddenly at the February Direct they say it's coming in 2 or 3 months.
They just make sure to be closer to release, to allow them internally to switch some releases in case something is internally delayed. Like, this one is probably pretty much done if I have to guess, but Nintendo might want to release it sooner in case a game that was supposed to release in April for instance needs a bit more time, and they can put this game in April.

That happened recently for instance, Splatoon 3 and Xenoblade 3. Xenoblade 3 was announced for Autumn 2022, and it actually released in July 2022. And Splatoon 3, while it didn't have a release date, it seems obvious it was supposed to release in July (like Splatoon 2) and it released in late September 2022, at the beginning of Autumn.

One of the best things about the trailer: it sounds like they're bringing back the enemy move/Mario move split music arrangements in battles from Origami King. Big fan of that decision if so.

Honestly expect it to be a 1:1 recreation of the OG, pacing issues and corridor level designs included.

The whole trailer screamed to me : "see, see ? It's the same game, it's what you wanted right ? We didn't change anything in your cult classic"
Sadly, this will most likely be the case, including the busted difficulty curve and balancing. They could at least give the localization a fresh edit to make Vivian trans like in the original.

To finally have a remake announced of one of my top games of all time is so incredibly exciting and surreal. I wonder if it would be a Switch 2 launch title 🤔

I'm curious about their color choices for the button prompts. A is red and Y is green. The Super Mario RPG remake also has the A button prompt as red. Is it usual for switch games to make up different colors for the button prompts and I just haven't noticed?

Sort of hoping against rationality that this is future-proofing for Switch 2 having different colored face buttons...

Man I didn’t realize there had been so much backlash against TTYD. It’s fair to critique the backtracking, but it’s still a very good game. Great writing and mechanically an improvement on 64.
Because it's "cool" to hate TTYD these days.
Game didn't have this kind of backlash at launch.
The shtick has gotten quite tiring, and im very glad this remake is going to finally extinguish it. Paper Mario 64 diehards are so weird

Nintendo doesn't dramatically change the gameplay structrue in remakes unless its like an nes/snes era game

I am actually anticipating discourse surrounding this topic, I think Nintendo is going to keep the translation the same as original US release.

Story and character wise is worse though.

Vivian is the highlight in TTYD but aside from her (and Goombella), the original PM64 cast wins by a lot.

Just my two cents, but I think the backlash against the pacing/backtracking in TTYD is so loud because that is literally the only thing you can legit complain about with this game. You rarely hear anyone complain about anything else with that game.

Personally I give it a 9.5/10. It is that great.

I want this to sell very well so that Nintendo can go back to producing original Mario RPGs, but I'm not buying it because I've got the GC game sitting on my shelf.

Some of the level design still bothers me (lookin' at you, last dungeon staircase "maze"), but that may fall under "pacing."

I am beyond hyped. TTYD slaps! They better not touch the soundtrack. I cant believe were getting this and MarioRPG. Switch is GOAT confirmed.

pretty sure it was remixed, and pretty damn good remix at that

It's just the most obvious and blatant negative about the game but there's plenty to criticize about it otherwise, which people have done.

Like the style they went with, that slight bit of depth that the characters have is a really cool effect.

I never hated the white outline, but I do prefer this style.

I am excited for this. Never played it.

Played PM64 the first time last year on NSO and loved it. Was surprised how good it was.
If this is even better then great.

Genuinely curious where in the game this is referring to. I'm a huge TTYD fan so I'm admittedly biased but I didn't realize the game had a reputation for this. I actually think PM64 is more "randomly" difficult in a lot of ways lol. Felt like they smoothed out the difficulty curve in TTYD, but that could just be my familiarity with the game at this point speaking. There are parts of Chapter 4 that are tough before recruiting Vivian but that feels intentional to me.

The game is extremely easy 99% of the time and you have to go out of your way to make it difficult for yourself only for the Dayzees in Chapter 4 to kick your ass and then it's breezy again up until the final boss. It sometimes feels like they gave partners their own HP bar very late in development and didn't do that much to account for it.

It having the worst battle theme in the series is a complaint I can think of.

Also the fanservice.

The game looks amazing and I can't wait to try it out. I wonder if the FE Cipher head is finally back on Paper Mario?

Maybe I'm looking at the game with rose-tinted glasses. It probably has more flaws than what I give it credit for.
