Rumour Switch 2 devkits information from Im A Hero Too - backward compatibility, camera sensor, new cartridge format, Atlus/Sega and Square support

That camera sensor could likely point to the few very vague AR rumors over the past couple of years. Nothing credible but I've seen it mentioned by a single twitter account lol.

But uh yeah, everything else sounds great. Do devkits usually have BC features? I imagine so.

Totally forgot about the possibility of FF7R on the Switch 2. That makes a TON of sense and can be extra $$$ for Square Enix.

I wonder if FF7R will be the Cloud Version or the Zack Version.

For the record: FF7R looking like a PS5 game on Switch 2 lines up with what the voices in my head have been telling me.

Well, we know Nintendo never brings the same console with just a upgrade in power.

It never happened.

Knowing this, switch 2 will have something new that no console handheld has. I wonder what, maybe it's something about that camera, maybe it's something else.

Oh, I'd think of it potentially as a DS -> 3DS situation.
Pretty much; I wouldn't be surprised if the Switch 2 games had a little notch in the cartridge just like 3DS games so they couldn't fit in the Switch/DS card slots

You know, i miss the mockups. I don't feel the hype like other generations.

Maybe because everyone thinks and probably it will is very simular as switch 1

Oh yeah, if proper leaks are starting to happen, it must mean that a reveal isn't too far off. Can't wait for it late this year (hopefully)

One of my clients works with Sega, I will poke around for my own knowledge but probably won't share to keep things under NDA.

We know they aren’t gonna sell this thing at a loss so I really hope it goes for at least 400 so that we can get some assurance that the thing is gonna have enough power to it. Considering how well PS5 sells at 500, I don’t think they’d have to worry about consumers being turned off by a higher price. If the games are there, people will come.

If the Switch 2 is getting P3R and FF7R then that’s a hell of a way to make a statement lol
Is it though? Getting those games though good are more expected to me. Western third party games are the biggest omissions. Also, what new cartridge formats are out there? This should lead to a lot of speculation.

Final Fantasy 7: Remake looking closer to the PS5 version over the PS4 version is kind of wild to me. Makes me think this new hardware could be more capable then I personally was expecting. My mind goes wild thinking about some massive gorgeous open world Mario, the next Zelda, the creepy atmospheric depths of Metroid Prime 4, etc on this new hardware.

Of course I take anything Nintendo related with a planet full of salt these days lol.

Possible DLSS is doing a lot of the heavy lifting to get the quality up right? If that’s the case and this is the kind of thing we can expect that’s amazing!

Wtf, the floodgates for hardware and software leaks/rumors this week opened simultaneously and EVERYTHING is positive. Now Mario Wonder is looking like a GOTY candidate. We are in the 7th year of a Nintendo console, featuring a historically great software lineup, and yet the next few years look more promising than ever.

For the record, I have no investment in the accuracy of this person, and don't have deep knowledge of the history here - a few folks I trust basically said "hey, known bullshitter."

As for the hardware stuff, with the exception of the camera, this feels like a greatest hits of recent leaks and standard expectations from the people who have been following it a lot. I would treat this solidly as "well researched fan fiction", personally

Would @NateDrake be able to confirm this? (if he know this of course).

Would be cool

3D NAND could be up for debate.

Again, not saying this game is real, or this leak is valid - but yeah, that's what I'd expect. The PS5 version is a little bit silly way to look at it, because the game got a big update that also applied to the PS4, and that update is often thought of as "the PS5 version". But yes, the game is a native 4k, which means no upscaling trickery, and the PS4 version is generally 1080p. That is a sort of perfect case to bring in DLSS 2 for really good results.

New cartridge format but still backwards compatible?

Maybe I am just reading too much in to this but that makes me a wee bit nervous

If this is all true ofc...
To me it kinda sounds like the GB(C) -> GBA change, or DS -> 3DS

The current cartridges still would run on the new system, but the new cartridges won't run on the old system, and they'd do something to the physical card to discourage dumb kids from even trying (GBA carts being smaller, 3DS carts having that notch)

Nate (and the rest of us in North America, tbh) should be enjoying the long weekend playing games (and/or drinking Henny) rather than talking about them, especially for the youngins going back to school next Tuesday.

Get yourself a PSL, cozy on up with some good games, and enjoy what little free time you have to spend in a world increasingly hellbent making sure you don't have enough hours in the day to do everything you need to do.

I know y’all are focused on the switch 2 but please think how likely it could be that someone knows pre-production games in multiple companies.

I played and beat FFVII remake on PS4 and PS5

And I honestly can’t remember a big difference except load times.
So that’s a positive.

Nintendo is about innovation:

With the Switch beginning its 7th year of existence, many fans are wondering what Nintendo is going to follow up the system with. There’s no doubt Nintendo will bring out another round of gaming hardware, a their president has confirmed that projects are underway.

In a Nintendo investor Q&A, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa opened up about where the Switch is at now, and where Nintendo will go in the future with hardware. While Furukawa wasn’t willing to share specifics, he did note that Nintendo is exploring some innovative and unique ideas. That said, the focus for the time being is squarely on Switch and its players.

You can see a translation of Furukawa’s comments below, as provided by VGC and Robert Sephazon.

“The growth rate of our annual active player base has begun to level off compared to what it was 3-4 years ago. We believe our next step is to focus on keeping high user activity while also attracting new users.

The lifecycle of a console is often based on the timing of major game releases, and therefore affects our continued commitment to software production. Moreover, we find it essential to continue providing new opportunities for customers to engage with the Nintendo Switch, beyond just the launch of new games.

We don’t believe that a secure number of annual active users negates the need for a next-gen console release. While we’re not at a stage to discuss specifics about a potential next-gen console, we’re continually considering innovative ideas that could offer new and unique experiences. We’re developing a variety of things with that future in mind.

In the event of a future hardware launch, the annual active user numbers will be heavily impacted by the number of hardware units sold. Knowing this, it’s important to maintain a substantial customer base that can enjoy Nintendo’s dedicated gaming systems and ensure that we have a smooth transition to the next generation console.

Nes to snes, 4 front button, to top buttons. It was refreshing.

Gb to gba. Color screen. Top triggers

Also Nintendo in early days was still specially focus on power
Extra buttons and color screens were added because the ambition and complexity of the games increased, because of more hardware power. The SNES and GBA are at the end of the day, NES2 and GB2. We accept the PS5 and PS4 as more powerful PlayStations, even though they added extra inputs like adaptive triggers and touchpads. Extra buttons doesn't suddenly change the premise of the console.

The point is the idea that Nintendo would 'never' do this, which isn't true.

The Switch already has 'gimmicks' like the IR sensor built in or as peripherals like Ring Fit and LABO. A stronger Switch can add as many gimmicks as it wants but at the end of the day is still a Switch with more power, because the Switch brand is defined by its multitude of hardware features. Switch 2 having a camera or touchpads wouldn't change that it's a hybrid console.
