Everytime I see this thread I'm reminded that people are hyping up a new direct, and yet I just don't feel it at all. Like it's strange, I waited for Zelda for so long, and like now that it's out I'm kinda...just content? Like if we don't get anything at all till September or even later, I'm more than fine with that personally.

Not throwing shade at anyone or anything, I just wanted to share why I'm just not feeling a direct right now.

I wouldn't say I'm especially hyped for or personally need a Direct; I just think it makes a lot of sense for one to happen soon, given how things are.

Zelda's keeping me busy and will for weeks; I've got a backlog of RPGs that includes Octopath Traveler 2, the FF pixel remasters, about half of Chained Echoes, and XBC 3 Future Redeemed. Pikmin 4 is preordered, too. I'd personally be OK with a quiet second half because there's already so much stuff.

But, context wise, it makes sense for Nintendo have second half games, to announce them a few months before launch, and to announce stuff in a Direct.

Edit - and I'll also have Sea of Stars, because I kickstarted it. Just got my backer email to choose my platform. Neat.

True. I still haven't finished TotK's story and I've been playing every day since launch. I'll probably remain occupied with it for the rest of June.

I’m always excited for a Nintendo Direct because every one is a chance for them to announce Yakuza 0 getting ported to Switch

Pack it up, Directs are cancelled. The holiday game is going to be Zelda DLC - that's right, Age of Calamity is back with Expansion Pack 2. It will feature new character vignettes, two new Zelda skins and a brand new stage: Hyrule Field With Some Zonai Ruins Scattered Through. Easiest 15 million Switch ever.

Hypothetically, if a Paper Mario TTYD comes out, does that drive down the prices of the Gamecube version? I'm trying to slowly build up a collection but don't really feel like paying 15 billion dollars for a game you know

Prime 4 full reveal with release date for this fall (or at most early 2024) would melt my mind and put me happy.

Second (very near) would be the announcement of a new (linear 3D) DK game.

Your best bet would be finding a retro game store, assuming those still exist, that's where I bought my TTYD copy back in like 2018. It only cost me like around $46.

You are missing out in life on the gem that is Pikmin

Not done Raccoon's weekly/daily/monthly/tricentennial thread guided posting challenge yet so maybe if I'm not tired soup brain tonight I'll do that.

I finally have a minute to respond to the earlier prompt about 2023/2024 predictions. Outside of a few series, I'm not as in touch with third party switch games as other posts I have read, so this list will mostly focus on first party games.

Remainder of 2023
  • June:
    • Persona 3 Remake is announced at the Summer Game Fest. It will release on all platforms this October.
    • A direct airs during the week of the 12th-16th with the following highlights:
      • F-Zero GX HD for September
      • 2D Mario for November
      • Dragon Quest III Remake, releasing in October
      • The re-reveal of Metroid Prime 4, which is given a Spring 2024 release window -- like Prime 2 and 3, the title will include the number and a subtitle.
    • I'm also going to throw in a Pokemon Presents the next week (19th-23rd) with a Mystery Dungeon game announced for September.
    • Finally, there will be a Pikmin 4 direct in the last week of June.
    • Horse game also releases that week, but Nintendo will make no effort to remind you about it.
  • July: More Pikmin 4 promotion throughout the month. Pikmin 4 releases July 21st.
  • August: No new announcements, but Nintendo attends Gamescom. More coverage and impressions of F-Zero and 2D Mario come out.
  • September:
    • The usual September direct airs.
      • Tears of the Kingdom is getting a few new questlines/boss fights as DLC, which will release in October.
      • Paper Mario TTYD HD announced, coming out in February 2024
      • Kirby cooking game will come out in January 2024
      • Fire Emblem Genealogy Remake revealed, releasing in April 2024
      • New trailer for Metroid Prime 4, releasing on March 15, 2024
    • F-Zero GX HD and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon release
  • October
    • Treehouse video with the new 2D Mario game
    • Persona 3 Remake releases on all platforms
    • Dragon Quest III Remake releases
  • November: this month is all about the new 2D Mario game. It releases, reviews well, and sells a ton of copies.
  • December: No new announcements. The Game Awards will happen, but Nintendo will not have a significant presence.

2024 Predictions
  • January: Cooking with Kirby releases. It's a $30 game with some fun multiplayer modes.
  • February:
    • Direct time!
      • Final trailer for Metroid Prime 4 -- they have been giving it a significant push -- reveals some new mechanics/story elements we didn't know about until then. Reminder of the March 15 release date
      • Short reminders in the headline segments about previously announced games, like FE4 remake and Paper Mario TTYD HD
      • New Donkey Kong game releasing in June
      • Zelda Wind Waker HD releases in May
      • Kid Icarus Uprising HD releases in July
      • Zelda Twilight Princess HD releases in September
      • 2D Mario DLC with new levels & playable characters releases in April
    • Paper Mario TTYD HD releases
  • March: Metroid Prime 4 releases, reviews very well, and quickly sells 2-3 million copies. It will end up somewhere between 3-4 million at the earnings report a few months later, and contrary to some beliefs out there, Nintendo is fine with these numbers
  • April:
    • 2D Mario DLC releases
    • FE4 remake releases
  • May
    • Zelda Wind Waker HD releases
  • June
    • Donkey Kong releases
    • Special Nintendo Presentation for next console -- this is why the February direct was loaded with remasters releasing through September
      • Like the switch, this console has both handheld and docked modes. It features improved resolution, loading times, and framerates. Further use of HD rumble is implemented. Nintendo will have some other creative features that I couldn't possibly think of. Release date in October, priced at $400 (I don't follow the hardware thread/advanced tech discussions so please don't roast me if I'm missing something obvious)
      • 3D Mario trailer, releases in October on launch day -- exclusive to new console
      • Zelda TotK upgrade demonstration
      • New Monolith Soft IP, releases in October on launch day -- exclusive to new console
      • Dragon Quest XII, releases 2025
      • This is getting difficult. I want to say Mario Party, but that might be overloading people on Mario. Some sort of casual party game also comes out with the new console.
    • Pokemon Presents: Detective Pikachu 2 finally resurfaces, releases in November
  • July: Kid Icarus Uprising HD releases
  • August: no new announcements
  • September:
    • Zelda Twilight Princess HD releases
    • Direct
      • New trailers for the games that come out with the new console
      • New 2D Kirby releasing on both the switch and the new console in February 2025
      • Animal Crossing releasing on the new console in March 2025
      • 2D Metroid releasing on both the switch and the new console in 2025
  • October:
    • New console releases with 3D Mario, Monolith Soft game, and casual game. Sells out instantly. People complain about not being able to find them. Hopefully I manage to get one at launch.
  • November
    • Continued promotion of the new console
    • Holiday restock -- console keeps selling out
    • Detective Pikachu 2 releases on both consoles
  • December
    • Holiday restock -- console keeps selling out
    • The Game Awards -- Nintendo shows up this time, shows a trailer for a new Wave Race game for the new console in summer 2025

Wow, that took a long time. Upon further review, some of these predictions may not be entirely logical, but I'm gonna roll with it. Now that I think about it, November may be more likely than October for a new console launch, but I didn't want to edit every single time I typed October. So, October it is! It gets a lot harder to predict things as it gets further into the future, because we really just don't know. I also made 2024 REALLY remaster-heavy for the current switch, which may not be the best prediction. However, I do think the leadup to a new console is a good time to release whatever they have been sitting on. It will be interesting to look back and see how (in)accurate this was. If you actually read this far down, thanks!

Hypothetically, if a Paper Mario TTYD comes out, does that drive down the prices of the Gamecube version? I'm trying to slowly build up a collection but don't really feel like paying 15 billion dollars for a game you know

It will bring the prices down somewhat because the game would be more available. A big reason that you see some of these games at high prices is because these games are locked on old hardware, and they cannot be played on modern consoles. Look at Super Mario Sunshine. The prices for that game almost cut in half after Super Mario 3D All-Stars Collection released. Goldeneye saw a similar drop earlier this year. We already saw it with Metroid Prime dropping 33% since the Switch version launched. Availability is a big driver in the market.

Now it isn't an exact science by any means. Earthbound has been readily available on the last three Nintendo systems, but that price has only gone up. Final Fantasy III (I mean VI) has been ported all over the place, including recently, but I don't see those prices dropping much if at all. To be fair though, Super Nintendo has that aura around it that will always keep prices high unless a massive crash happens. Even then though, I think SNES collections will probably hold their value until the end of time. That system probably carries more nostalgia than any other system. Pretty much any title that isn't a sports game will garner at least $15~$20 these days.

Ok, SNES rant is over. Bottom line, yes the Gamecube prices will come down. They won't crater, but I wouldn't be surprised if they came back to the $50~60 range.

The only thing I’m 100 certain is a new hardware next year. I don’t know if it a new console, but something is coming next year.

50-60 is something I can work with. Personally my white whale is to someday own Four Sword Adventures, with enough link cables and GBA's to play 4 player co-op.

This will be me after Metroid Prime 4. Love Zelda, I’ve been playing it a lot, but Prime 4 is my ‘Half Life 3’. Once I get Prime 4, or even just a trailer and release date, I’ll be much more open to going with the flow.

Unless Prime 4 comes out and is terrible. But I highly doubt that will be the case.

cannot fathom anyone genuinely thinking Nintendo is okay have zero dated games after Pikmin. Won’t happen. We’re gonna get something this month lol

Before we get a General Nintendo Direct on June 22nd, we are getting a Everybody 1-2 Switch! gameplay demonstration this week on Wednesday.

Join the Everybody 1-2 Switch! Producer, Mr. Kawamoto and Director, Mr. Shikata, for roughly 30 minutes of gameplay from the Everybody 1-2 Switch! on 6/7 at 7:00 a.m. PT on our YouTube channel.

Time for my annual, "Oh gee NoA and NCL haven't tweeted today at all yet! I wonder if something's getting announced soon?" post. We'll see if I'm just talking crazy again or not I guess

Only announcement times for Directs is 23:00 Japan Standard Time.
Yeah, I actually only say this because I've begun to notice that Nintendo accounts don't tweet much in the hours or day leading up to a Direct/major announcement. Though this line of thinking really only works in regards to NoA or NCL, and I'm pretty sure there have been times where there are a bunch of tweets between the accounts prior to some announcement.

June 12th tweet: "A Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase will be available for viewing on 6/14"

June 12th tweet, 15 minutes later: "PLAY THE UPCOMING EPIC CONCLUSION TO THE PIKMIN SAGA, PIKMIN 4 ON JULY 21ST, WITH A FRESHHHHH ROCK PIKMIN THEMED NINTENDO SWITCH PRO CONTROLLER AVAILABLE 6/14. EXCLUSIVELY AT KOHLS, PREORDER NOW!!!"

Pikmin is my favorite franchise of all time. But I also really love Animal Crossing.

I’d be very happy if we got both Pikmin Direct and Animal Crossing Direct in June/July💚

I think the video points are kinda reaching and stretching what probably just means Nintendo being pissed at emulation and not something they are actually planning to do(unless those NSMB Wii for PC rumors were to come true eventually which I doubt, but don't rule out seeing the Wii ports for Shield in China).

However I do agree that a remake of Animal Crossing could be a way to capitalize on the series on the late life Switch and early life of Switch 2 before the storm of a new Animal Crossing game unleashed by 2025 or so.

We've had a Luigi's Mansion remake come for 3DS just the year before 3 came out and when Switch was on the market for 1.5 years already.

Animal Crossing remake using New Horizons assets could be made way quicker than the next Animal Crossing game for new hardware or a remake with no foundation. I would personally like that for 2024. Specially coming from a 40M selling juggernaut, I think Nintendo would be dumb to let the franchise get cold until a new installment comes.

The most realistic prediction in this thread yet.

Yeah the video is pretty reactionary to the dolphin story last week which initial reporting was wrong about.

I've said it before but I'm itching to replay the original Animal Crossing game. I do think it will be jarring for those who got into AC in the last two iterations but it's so good.
