StarTopic The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom |ST| Linkin' Parts (Please Tag All Spoilers)

There was also a red rock across a broken bridge I don't think I ever broke because fixing the bridge was getting annoying.

AH yes, I can tell you:

I spent a good fifteen minutes fooling around with ways to fix that bridge with parts lying around, still getting Yunobo to be able to blast across, etc. Huge pain in the ass. Finally got it done and broke that rock to discover... there's nothing there. Literally nothing, not even a treasure chest, no alternate path to a gong, nothing. Just another rock on a small platform. I have no idea what the point was, it's the only time I've been really annoyed at this game

I know people were dunking on the Depths for lack of environmental variety, but idk… I still haven’t gotten tired of the environment itself yet. I think it looks REALLY cool.

Kinda tickles the Metroid Prime loving part of my brain in a way, with all the weird fungi and fauna. I don’t know if anyone else feels the same

I feel exactly the same. I absolutely love the atmosphere and the environment in general. It's a nice break from everything else in the game.

I mean there is plenty of variety in the depths, underground forests, lakes, enemy strongholds, mining facilities, magma areas. I think people don't like it's so dark which uhhhh....duh?

I also like the sparseness. Comparatively, the surface is bustling with activities, so the context switch to something more slower paced is welcomed, in my opinion.

It's not that the depths don't look cool. I love the look of them and my first time down I was in awe. The problem is that they are as big as the overworld and really empty feeling. Like I have explored a lot of the depths and it just feels tedious. Compare that to the overworld where it feels like I can't walk 5 feet without being distracted by something interesting. The depths are a cool idea but they should have shrunk the size down massively imo so that they could be more densely packed with interesting things to do.

yeah I love the depths too, my fav part of the game at this point....only disappointed that the archaeology-style quests to figure out what it is fizzled out almost immediately—why does all the plant life make it look like it used to be underwater!! the hugeness of it really works for me, especially now that I've gotten comfortable with throwing together weird vehicles to cover the distance between lightroots, and checking out points of interest corresponding to areas I like on the surface

i'll definitely be sad once I've got the whole thing lit up, the absolute pitch blackness is something I've never seen implemented like this outside of Dark Souls's "tomb of the giants" area and it creates such a cool, terrifying atmosphere as you first drop in and as you gradually light up your surroundings. has me thinking about this movie a lot:

I mean tha's the exact same thing people have been saying about botw's overworld for 6 years..

I wonder if alot of the issues is people flying over it in their green goblin gliders

I think it's a matter of preference because your reasons for not liking it are why I like it. It's not truly empty in the physical/geometric sense, but it feels like a long trek to different points of interest, and to me that has its own sort of value that offers a different kind of exploration experience (space exploration in games has a similar vibe). I do get that it's not for everyone though. Similarly, some people are overwhelmed with how much there is to do on the surface.

Okay, the Sky Islands that give you the

Zonaite armor are really cool. I did a session last night scaling the zero gravity south tabantha archipelago, finding some koroks, a typical shrine crystal puzzle and an old map along the way.

But then found my way up even higher to a unique bigger island called Lightcast Island, where you had to lead mirrors through a dark cave and end up in a room with a really cool looking zonaite armor, and then a path to a blessing shrine opens up which was like a cherry on top of this entire hour long journey I took up the archipelago, then skydived down with one of those skydiving Koroks.

Then today I found Zonaite Forge Island, another cool unique island which FINALLT showed me where that skydiving laser scene in trailer 3 took place, and got the second piece of the armor.

Can’t wait to find the third one, as following the pattern it should be on a really cool island like the first two

Of course its all just preference. Unfortunately for me both the depths and the sky islands have been a bit of a letdown for me. And that is not to say they are bad even. I still love this game and am really curious to know how many hours I have put into it since release because I would be surprised if it was less than 40 and I still have plenty to go with no intention of stopping anytime soon. And that is after putting over 70 hours into Breath of the Wild in the weeks leading up to the release of TOTK.

what do you mean you can skydive right into the brittle ice platings instead of using your bow....

Found the first island you mentioned two days ago. So sick!

So the new meta is spending 15 minutes building a contraption to accomplish a task you could do manually in like 1 minute and then having that contraption fail catastrophically and have to do it manually anyway.

Nice, so how much did you complete the game at that moment?
I still have half the depths to uncover, 2 more memories, a few sky islands to get to and lots of surface areas I haven’t revisited, not to mention doing a more thorough exploration of areas uncovered as well.
I almost have all the caves and wells done, which has been my favorite part. I could have easily beaten the game awhile ago, but just sticking with slow exploration has really worked for me and maximized my enjoyment of the game. I don’t spend a lot of time building vehicles, found a few basic designs for flying that work just as well if not better than making it too complicated.

Took a break yesterday and after getting some upgrades I started the Gerudo quest. Just got to the town and I'm loving the vibe here, reminds me a lot of Ikana Valley. Feel like this was a good choice for the last quest.

I accidentally headed to the finale instead of major quest 5. Honestly really enjoyed how sudden and tense everything got and how rough the back to back battles were. I'd go as far to say keeping an unfinished story save file to try the finale is a good idea.

It's the most ingenious and thrilling part of the game imo. The sky is great and everything, but the Depths are a huge part of what makes the game truly outstanding

I've lost hours in the depths easily, and there's a lot more variety down there than it would seem at first glance.

The Depths genuinely unnerve and frighten me and give me similar vibes something like Subnautica does in terms of letting me stare into the vast unknown. Sometimes I play very brashly down there now and will run through some darkness, and I'm waiting for the time that has me run headfirst into something very scary.

It's funny that I enjoy it at all because prior to release I was really thinking "god I hope there's nothing of note in the Typhlo Ruins, I'm not doing that again."

well, it took a lot of scrabbling and running around the Great Plateau, but I finally chucked all of this guy's eyes into the chasms. now to track him down and... wait, I have to hand-deliver all four of these? maybe he can just stay blind

it also helps that the yiga journals and space pirates logs feel very similar

If it helps, those eyes fall down near a bunch of Zonai gizmos you can cobble together. Only took me around a minute per eye haha.

General thoughts on the game so far + Gerudo questline. I'll say that overall I'm enjoying the game but there are a lot of elements that I find frustrating.

The narrative pretty much undercuts itself from the get go and since the pre-release trailers, when Zelda gets to have a direct sequel in terms of its world, the narrative set up understandably goes for a different angle, that is set as far back as The Adventure of Link, and it always delivered in some form after that with more surreal entries, Link’s Awakening, Majora’s Mask, Phantom Hourglass, they differentiate themselves by transporting Link to another world, bringing in new villains and atmosphere to that world, Tears of the Kingdom pretty much says you know that ending from Breath of the Wild, it doesn’t matter, Ganondorf is back again, there are problems in each main area thanks to the malice again, we have to hunt memories again, Zelda is gone again, etc. I don’t really like that at its core is just trying? To outdo BotW, and honestly so far is not working for me, the memories I have gotten aren’t super interesting, I kind of like the Gerudo one with Ganondorf, but it that is in some ways negated by the fact that the dorf can’t be allowed to be a character thanks to the memory from beating the dungeon, where it just shows him with half Demise body, which is just a being of malice and nothing more, it also bothers me because iirc in BotW is established that Ganon at that point had reincarnated so much that the Calamity is all that was left, his spirit basically, but again that seems to not matter at all here. I haven’t done that much besides the main story, so maybe side quests and the citizens of Hyrule will give me some satisfaction when it comes to the narrative, won’t get into personal gameplay driven mini stories because that is pretty well personal, I do value that a lot but is not something I can broadly discuss given the wildly different experiences from each play.

The allies system is pretty cumbersome, the fact that you have to search for your ally and press A to activate the power makes them not very reliable, like with Riju, they are already on a cooldown, but Riju also has to charge up her AoE, during the Thunder Temple fight, between the mobs, aiming for the boss and the spawn points, is such a bother to have to also look for where she is to start the charge. It just feels very cluttery compared to BotW, and I can sum up a lot of TotK like that, a lot of more interesting ideas that the game doesn't feel like letting me have fun with them. The champion abilities aren't as interesting in the previous game but they were all tied to your natural movement and reliable in their usage, Revali tied to jumps, Urbosa to the charge, Daruk to shielding, and Mipha was a fairy with full recharge.

Caves and underground? Great idea, but I don't understand why they got rid of the bomb rune in a game where one would use it the most, I get that the idea is now fusing a weapon to a rock, but I think it clashes with the fact that all weapons are rusty, feel like they break much faster, I don't feel like wasting my resources blowing up mineral rocks that might not give me anything, and start to run out of things when most caves have branching paths within them with a lot of rocks to break as well. Bomb flowers don't seem like a very abundant resource, and it seems the only vendor of them is through Poe trading, is not like the Bomb rune was a very high damage item, it was very useful to break boxes and the like without the need to burn its contents or waste weapon durability. Riju's thunder sort of helps but you are also using up arrows and bows, plus the double cooldown of hers makes it a lot more time consuming.

I don't have much to complain about Ultrahand, feels like a straight upgrade from Magnesis, allowing to handle a lot more items, spinning them more efficiently, and sticking stuff together is cool.

Fuse as a concept is great, in execution I have some issues. Menu usage, UI and fusing in the overworld can feel pretty clumsy, prepping items beforehand is fine, just don't expect me to fuse stuff in the middle of combat or anything like that.

When pausing with the quick menu to swap between fused weapons, they have a bit of extra lag waiting for it to go back to gameplay, and that annoys me tbh, it felt pretty instantaneous in BotW, I even went back to check just to make sure.

Fusing arrows can be a chore, you have to open the quick menu everytime you want to use a fused arrow, I think they could have at least let me equip and unequip materials at will so that I only have to open the menu again to stop using a material or change to another, it wouldn't be the most ideal thing ever just taking in account the amount of stuff you can fuse, but at least if I want to hit enemies with a bunch of Gibdo materials that are pretty strong in succession, I don't have to bring up the quick menu every single shot.

Honestly think the depths could be my favorite part of the game, but I won't get around to exploring them until I feel prepared enough, also the annoyances of the menu-ing also pop up there by having to open up constantly for the light seeds, I should cook up light tonics to see if that is a good enough replacement for them.

Ascent and Recall are weird, these feel like some earlier Zelda items, and by that I mean that they seem much more situational than the more free form abilities like Ultrahand and Fuse, and the BotW runes. Ascent's range is pretty limited and is at times arbitrary as to which surfaces you can go through, so is cool for puzzles and very specific situations and nothing else to me. Recall relies on something already having momentum and a route in order to be useful, instead of creating your own momentum like is possible with Stasis. To be clear I think the abilities are fine by themselves(much like the more situational items in previous games), just don't seem as consistently useful in the context of BotW's gameplay format, so I guess it isn't much a critique or complaint about them and more just an observation.

Not a fan of the gacha Zonnan machine, instead they should just let me craft what I want or need with Zonnan materials, is nothing gamebreaking but at this point I just hate gachas after their use in Xenoblade 2 and Forgotten Land, I don't want to see them anymore with main mechanics or locking Kirby lore behind them.

TotK also tries to be more linear from the get go than BotW and in some ways is constantly clashing with the idea of freedom.

The intro sequence is pretty much a straight line, one I don't care for, think is a bit too long just to establish the Zonnan and Zelda explaining what a camera is. Then in the sky islands you can't do all the 4 tutorial shrines in any order, one is locked out for honestly no seemingly good reason, it also denies your choice of what your first upgrade is going to be, it must be a heart container. When you finally land, you have the choice to run around Hyrule if you want, it doesn't really stop you, but also you won't have the glider or the ability to open up towers, so choosing to ignore the main story for a bit can be pretty punishing.

I think the difficulty is also affected by the format, the game clearly wants you to do the Orni quest first, and is pretty obvious by the enemy progression there, a lot of low level enemies, if I want to explore the depths then I'll be greeted by far more difficult ones regardless of the area, double trouble with the malice powered enemies, I don't mind a good challenge but Link is pretty much a glass cannon even with the best armor set you can get without exploring much, I'll also be lacking strong enough materials to fuse with all the rusted weapons to maximize damage, and I don't have runes like bombs and stasis as last minute resorts for combat, in general in my time with the game, I have felt like I don't have much of a fighting chance, between all the one shot attacks, and lot of retries I would have gone through if it wasn't for the couple of fairies I get from some sky islands. I don't feel compelled to try and fight my way through some camps unlike BotW until I get the rest of the allies and get some more stamina and heart containers, and I never felt like this in the previous game, idk I feel like I faster here than in a Souls game. So now I'm just mentally setting myself up to just look for shrines and do the main quest and then explore but, that is a lot of ground to cover to evade combat scenarios and exploration.

I'm not a big fan of Shrines coming back, despite some good puzzles in them, alongside the Koroks, to be clear, Breath of the Wild suffered in some ways with its content and visual repetition, not going to deny that, but I also let slide some of that because they clearly had to build a ton from the ground up, not just even the game itself but rethinking foundations of the series and how to move it forward, one can always ask for more, but BotW as it is, is good enough for that first attempt. So I won't give TotK as much of a pass now, shrines have a new background and music, but is still just one background and music track, and I don't get why bring them back, now with sky island and the depths, they could have contextualized puzzles into the great world of Hyrule, instead of being separated from it, also would make the rewards more umpredictable, like maybe I'll find a puzzle that gives me a stamina boost in this cave or something, or a heart in this sky island, without the need of loading times, going in and then back out just for a treasure chest + orb combo in some shrines, shrine treasure chests being far worse now since it seems all the armor sets are spread in the overworld, meaning that for the most part nothing cool will come from them in shrines, reduce visual repetition and make finding rewards more organic. Korok seeds are back with mostly the same puzzles plus a particularly annoying one of reuniting 2 friends, some are pretty tricky and for only 2 seeds where the pouch upgrade requirements keep increasing, it doesn't really feel worth the effort, compared to the more painless mini puzzles, with a far more populated Hyrule and more places to explore, they could have tied pouch upgrades as rewards from quests or just finding them in the world, again something a bit more organic in terms of exploration and discovery and not make more stuff feel like just a rehash of BotW. The shrine quality is inconsistent, there are some shrines that basically act as tutorials, like in the Gerudo area there will be one for a sand vehicle and the light and mirrors classic puzzle, and idk, think these are pretty intuitive to really require a shrine just for that, respect player intelligence but then have all this to kind of beat you over the head with feels counterintuitive. This also extends to the fusing, a lot of locations where you would need to combine stuff already have something done as a guide instead of letting the player figure it out, more so with optional stuff, like in th thunder temple where is not required to create a mirror shield to do the puzzles, but it would make someone feel smarter to come up with that to solve puzzles faster, but the dungeon hands you one already made from the enemies, kind of takes away from the core mechanic.

The Gerudo story area itself, pretty good, blinding the map view reminds me of OoT and requires a decent amount of spatial awareness, the puzzles to open the temple are ok, the defense sequence is neat, and the Thunder Temple itself is solid, is more structured as a traditional temple, but the lenght and general build up of the puzzle complexity I would say still lacks in some areas, the mirror sequence for the activation thingy was really well done tho, they could have stuck the shrine puzzles that acts as a tutorial for it here, and the boss itself is for the most part good, but given my greavances with how it handles the allies system, it was a little too much of a mess visually, but this interpretation of the Gibdos is really amazing, concept and design wise is 10/10 stuff.

Uh what else, I find the sky islands kind of disappointing, but given the existence of shrines I can see how some of that could take away from just making more interesting islands, is a shame because I really like their aesthetic. Music wise is fine, so far nothing sounds out there enough given the chanting and the use of saxophone in the trailers, and I find the cutscene music less memorable than BotW's, did really like the music in the Gerudo dungeon. And overall, the re use of Hyrule is partly hurting my overall experience, not much I can do about that.

Finished the Dragon’s Tears, and yeah, theory was correct. Which… has me pretty conflicted.
It’s a cool idea and a way to restore the Master Sword (shoutout to Fi, the unsung hero of both games now) but I really, really wish they hadn’t made Memory #3 so explicit. I put this together almost immediately after seeing that memory and it was one of the first ones I saw (Draconification? They wouldn’t bother to mention that unless someone does it… and there’s a Light Dragon now that seemingly didn’t exist before… and the memories are called “Dragon’s Tears” and they’re Zelda’s memories, which otherwise have nothing to do with Dragons… so yeah, Zelda clearly eats her stone and becomes the Light Dragon and that’s why she tells Link to find her, since she will “lose herself”)

Which, again, is a cool idea but I feel like me working it out so soon and then it playing out exactly like that robbed a lot of the emotional impact. In addition I just connected way more with the memories in the first game: the buildup of Zelda’s character and her relationship with Link (that emotional connection in particular was missing here, and Zelda felt far more isolated as a result) had me hooked completely, in addition to just constantly wanting to know how Zelda contained Ganon, the scene where she breaks down, etc., and culminating in that fantastic scene where her power awakens. These flashbacks just didn’t land nearly as hard for me, despite still being interesting and well-done.
BOTW Memories hit better, for me personally.

you are massively underselling how useful ascent is, trust me. I felt the same way at first but the options it adds to traversal are flat out insane.

TotK side quests:
Here's an intriguing story about an ancient rumour. Find the things needed to complete the quest, each thing tying into various other NPC's, side stories and mini-games. Get the ancient stone tablet you get as a result and solve its riddle. Upon solving it, go to the cavern and defeat the monsters within. Your reward is some sick gear and some valuable treasures for your adventure.

BotW side quests:
Here's an orb. Here's a hole. Put the orb in the hole. Your reward is a shrine.

I agree, I've really been enjoying them and they do remind me of the Phazon Mines and Impact Crater. I think it's a good thing they're not as dense as the surface is, it'd probably be too tedious if anything and it'd diminish the sense of it as a dangerous wasteland if it was as packed as Hyrule above. The map is detailed enough that you are given a pretty good idea of where points of interest will be, too. Maybe by the end of the game I'll be on team "they should've been smaller" but the sense of vastness does add something to it in my opinion. I wouldn't want that to be the only thing in the game, but as part of the complete experience it's a really cool addition, and doesn't feel quite like anything in Zelda before.

The Depths are almost like a modern counterpart of ALTTP Dark World. As a kid, the more aggressive enemies and the less vibrant palette really scared me. OoT future didn't came close, as it was a world to be saved with some friendly characters, whereas the Dark World and the Deapths are fallen worlds which hate you. And of course, both of them had that "WTF ANOTHER WORLD?" factor.

Gotta say, not really the best lead up. Felt a bit like Hyrule Warriors lol. And previous ones all focused on a bunch of new mechanics and this one just focuses solely on Riju’s ability which is just adding lightning to your arrows. Also didn’t have a cool miniboss like Goron or Zora, the tight level design of the Sky Island lead ups like Rito and Zora. Idk, it could have used another brand new location in between. I stumbled into a cool cave in the Gerudo shelter, backed out of it but something could’ve been done there like the Zora Waterworks. Maybe they’re evening it out with Gerudo getting it’s own mini dungeon and unique miniboss with the Yiga Hideout in BotW lol.

On the plus side, it does boast its own enemy type with the Gibdos which are super neat. And I just entered the dungeon and looked at the map and it looks really good so far. Hopefully it ends up being my favorite like it seems to be for many - Naboris was by far my favorite of the DBs. Also the Abandoned town + the new Gerudo shelter is by far my favorite of the “town changes”

Not too far in yet. Decided to make my way to Kakariko after doing the the stuff around lookout landing. I get way more excited to go cave/well spelunking than doing shrines. Kind of wonder if the BotW/TotK style could work without shrines and go back to old-fashioned pieces of heart found around the world (or spirit orbs, or whatever equivalent).

I'm surprised how frequently the rewind-able falling rock chunks appear. After the first foray into the depths for Robbie's quest, I made my way southeast to the Riverside stable, found a rock there, paraglided off it after fully rewinding it, glided over to Necluda tower, glided from that after surveying the land, found another fallen rock from where I could paraglide to a sky island with a Nausicaa glider then soared on that to Dueling Peaks stable. My journey from Lookout Landing to Kakariko was like 75% in the air and that was kind of amazing.

My friend decided to do this and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it, so I thought maybe this might give a few laughs if I shared it.

As for myself, working through the Gazette quests now. Got most of 'em but I think I want to do some exploring now.

It’s gonna be way harder for me to rate the 4 races dungeon quests in TOTK.

In BotW it was a very clear Gerudo>>>>Zora>>Goron>>>>>Rito

Like Gerudo in its lead up and dungeon were so far ahead of all the others, and Rito so far below.

TOTK’s… all are a step up generally from BotW and all have their own strengths and weaknesses

Cool night in TotK for me - Made progress in Lurelin Village, did my first labyrinth which was awesome (albeit disappointing in its reward), explored more of the depths, discovered three lightroots, found some sweet gear (namely the
Tunic of Time
), and even had a fight with
Colgera
that netted me 100 crystallized charges! Ended the night by unlocking the third Great Fairy, upgrading a ton of my gear, and cashing in another heart container and energy cell.

Oh shit I didn't realize my stamina would max out at 3 wheels lol. I was alternating hearts and stamina and I guess it's all hearts now.

Think I'm close to the Gerudo dungeon, been enjoying this section though I'm getting to the point where 75 hours in, I am ready to hit credits. I'll wrap up the main quest line and then maybe start exploring more of the game at my own leisure.

I barely remember the BOTW quest lines if I am honest. But I really like all of the ones here, with maybe Zora being the weakest so far.

Wew this Gerudo miniboss is a pain in the ass. how am I supposed to wear good armor to fight it when it does a shitton of damage while also fighting the sun, I really don't want to have to cook food lol

EDIT: It flew away after losing like 40% of its health bar??? okay then

I’m terrible with the flurry rush in this game, and have been killed so many times.

Btw…

Maybe I’m unprepared, but the final boss kick my ass easily.

Couldn’t defeat the Demon King, only Ganondorf.

On the other hand, haven’t upgraded my armor fully, only twice. But the game hits very hard and I hate the gloom.

Ganondorf is very Flurry Rush focused. If you're having trouble take some rockets and fuse them to your shield. Whenever he goes for special attacks (the attacks that do Gloom damage or involve projectiles), rocket jump and switch to just shooting him with arrows as he's vulnerable in this state.

This on its own could be a full fledged (indie) game and people would gladly pay for it. And it's crazy that it's just a side quest-y thing in this game.

Fininshed the game two days ago and really enjoyed the game a lot. Both my brother and sister are playing it too so we share our progression (without spoilers, which is sometimes a bit tricky) and we all agreed on numerous points :

  • The game is much harder than BotW. In the Temples, ennemies hurt so much and yet the bosses doesn't hurt that much.
  • The world bosses on the other hand, especially the Gloom Hands are a big difficulty spike that made me run like crazy the first time I found some.
  • The game hits your attention like crazy. You want to do a specific thing and nope, there is ALWAYS something that will trigger your attention to something else. We all "suffered" this in Skyrim, Oblivion, BotW and a lot of open world games but it looks like TotK is doing this at a much higher level.
  • The game tells you early that only skilled people attach light seeds to their arrows instead of teaching you that you can throw the damn things with your hands for the same results (with a much shorter distance). I can't count how many arrows & bows I have wasted in the depths.

Note that this doesn't mean that these are bad things.
Now I wish the game had a few things :

  • Being able to wear a "costume" while wearing another gear. I'm not confident enough to wear a cool gear that only offer me a total of 9 DEF against a Griock.
  • Any accessibility option at all.
EDIT :
I just realized how many things have a completely different name in french (even NPCs don't have the same name ; Kaas in BotW was called Asarim for example).
