Reviews The Super Mario Bros. Movie review thread

Both of those scathing reviews say the animation/CGI is bad... which, I am pretty sure most would disagree with after seeing the trailers and clips so far.

Odd reviews.

We're only on page 2. Can we wait a little until this thread devolves into "this review has a different opinion than what I expect to, so the reviewer must be an idiot"
I normally agree with this, but saying this movie LOOKS bad is absolutely ridiculous. The phrase "second rate CGI" got a giant eye roll out of me.

Reviewing worse than the sonic movies. How is that even possible lol?

I mean like why wouldn't it be possible in theory? Mario games have even less story than the Sonic games, there's less of a story base to draw from, plus Sega is probably less strict in letting a screenwriter have more leeway with things.

There is a difference between critique and sensationalism.

And, we are actually just as allowed to criticize critique just as much critics are allowed to critisize the content.

Oof even 64% may have been too optimistic

At least it's a higher RT than the 90s movie

I'm all for accepting all kinds of critical reviews in good grace, but when it's Peter Bradshaw... go get him, gamers, lol. Guy is horrible at what he does. Awful!

Anyway, the movie sounds literally exactly what you would have predicted it to be the moment we knew it was illumination making it. Like, straight out of the 4chan memes about it. An overly frantic speed-run of nostalgia, misplaced musical montages and jokes that almost never hit. I'll watch some of it for the CGI and easter eggs. I couldn't do more than 5 minutes of the Sonic movie (despite my little niece thinking it was a masterpiece) so if I can do more than 5 minutes of this one I guess it "wins".

Also makes me lol remembering how my niece couldn't understand how I could know who Knuckles and Tails were if I had never seen the movies.

There WILL be 5 year olds who see this and are amazed to find out that Mario is a video game.

Hmm

Well

If it doesn't find it's way to a fresh tomato in 24 hours I have to declare victory early

Didn't expect that

How in the world is the CG bad, what? Just from the trailers, itā€™s the best thing illumination has ever animated. One of their best looking movies if not the absolute best. I see plenty of squash and stretch which are sorely missing from Pixar and Disney 3D films.

Also calling it ā€œCGā€ is weird as hell. Itā€™s an animated movie. Honestly, a bizzare review. Itā€™s like they were expecting a live action movie and saying the CGI is bad lol.

Damn, that RT score. Isn't the RT score usually way higher than the MC score? What happend here?
Gaming outlets arenā€™t counted toward RT I presume, and theyā€™re way way more positive on it

IGN and Gamespot have it at 8 and 9

I know it's not nice to see a movie is getting dragged by reviewers, but let's be deathly honest, there is no one in this world that should be surprised an Illumination movie is a bad movie, and much less call into question the sanity of someone who did not like it. This was always the most likely scenario.

It's an Illumination film. This movie's reviews are on par with the usual critical output.

RT is a lot easier to sway towards either end. If everyone gives a movie a 4/10, then itā€™s gonna go down as a 0%. The RT score is generally more ā€œextremeā€.

And just like Nintendo games regardless of their quality this will make bank either way.

I'm sure fans will enjoy the hell out of this. But it is too bad that this won't be breaking the "video game movies are bad" curse further than Sonic or Pikachu did.

It is wild how video game adaptations have done so much better in a critic reception sense in the tv show format (Castlevania, Arcane, The Last of Us) than they have movie wise.
