StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (New Staff Post, Please read)

Sky High Sundae has entered the chat, pissed on the floor, chugged down to 30FPS and failed to render its boost posts and panels.

In short, no.
??? I've not experienced that. The only spot where the GPU load is hitting extremely high numbers that I've seen is near the starting line at around 85-90% (using Status Monitor overlay through CFW), but nothing out of the ordinary has happened to me.

I don’t really think they do or to any significant degree that people seem to make it when one of the most popular games on the planet is a mobile game that is severely under the native resolution of the screen and it’s because it’s enjoyable to them as an open world title on a mobile phone.
If consumers didn’t care for visuals nobody would ever buy a Series X over a Series S.

The S is doing pretty horrible to the point of being massively outsold by the PS5 despite the S having had huge discounts already.
I don’t think Microsoft has broken out sales between the Series consoles in any meaningful way, but it looks like they consoles are outselling PS5 so far this year, though they’re still down by a few million lifetime.

It’s much easier to find an S than the X. S outselling X was specific markets.

Where did you hear that Xbox is outselling PS5 this year??

One thing that would be interesting is if Nintendo could get a custom screen that could cleanly show 40 FPS.

TVs are built to be able to cleanly show 24 FPS despite 60 not being divisible by 24 because so much content historically is 24 FPS.

I wonder if it could ever be feasible for 40 FPS on a handheld screen.

40 FPS is becoming much more common on gaming due to the emergence of 120 Hz TVs so it would be great if they could get a screen that could do 40 FPS.
Steam deck already does this. It's less a panel thing and more on the display driver, I guess. Should be doable for drake

No, they have been getting stomped by the PS5 ever since Sony managed to start getting them in stock last November.

Ok so
Dumb consumers probably don’t care about visuals all that much on their own

But when they have friends telling them not to buy certain systems or games on certain systems there’s an influence there.

A lot of Nintendo’s uphill battle is that they’re still overcoming the Wii reputation… (I mean more than once I’ve had store employees tell me NOT to purchase Wii games because they’re inferior)

Switch is a hit, it has known Compromises… with more ports of popular multi platform games with compromises.
On the one hand Nintendo switch gamers understand the compromises and are okay with it … on the other, getting popular games with seemingly little to no compromises and acceptable modern image quality would be a huge step in over coming the hurdles of the phantom Wii era.

Truth be told, if we're talking about overall sales, MS was initially allocating a lot of X boards for their cloud service. I know they are done (for the time being?), but is S still outselling X on a weekly/monthly basis?
Yes.

You said ‘consumers don’t care’. I’m saying that some clearly do. Doesn’t matter how small a slice, it’s a market.

(Availability also plays into the S vs X sales, of course.)
A market that people grossly oversell as if they are the primary audience that makes up the majority of what people actually buy. The series X doesn’t even hit 4K most of the time, it fluctuates.

Like seriously, worrying about the switch next not hitting native 4k or it not looking pristine is greatly overselling how many people even care. It’s a minority. It just has to look good enough. The switch is still way more popular than the XBox consoles, why? Because people have other priorities that isn’t resolution.

None of that has anything to do with it being rendered in relatively low res on a large TV though.
I'm not sure if you noticed, but Sky High Sundae cannot in fact urinate.

I was being particularly facetious, for comedic effect. But, it is still a good example of what I'm talking about. It's very vertical compared to base game maps, with lots of normal mapping, lots of effects, and a number of MISSING effects. In the distance, the low rendering resolution does make it suffer compared to other maps, not helped by the fact that yes, it does indeed run at 30FPS!

In four player split screen, just like the rest of the game!

However, as before, the temporal resolution being halved and the spacial resolution being QUARTERED makes it look even rougher. Four Player Splitscreen Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in Tabletop Mode is an amazing feat of technology... And on Sky High Sundae, easily one of the UGLIEST experiences on Switch.

Switchforce made a YouTube video on the Switch 2’s gimmick is AI. Wonder where that came from…hmm
Famiboards -> Internet -> Famiboards

We are on stage 2.

Soon we will have someone come by and ask if it's "possible" or "likely" or something, and as usual, we'll reach stage 3, and like Super Mario Galaxy, the cycle will begin anew.

Zynga? You mean BaZynga?

I'm probably going to hell for that joke. :ninja:

I really want to believe that a screen capable of 30, 40 and 60 Hz refresh rate is feasible on a far-flung future Switch model, or even Drake if I'm being optimistic.

I think Sony has their eyes on the future where games like Ratchet acknowledge the additional power of the PS5 and can render 40 frames per second as opposed to 30. The sooner Nintendo jumps on that train, the better.

Famiboards -> Internet -> Famiboards

We are on stage 2.
Watch as they incorrectly quote their source as "ResetEra".

I don't think FamiBoards has that much "internet presence" as other outlets. Perhaps this is the reason why we seem to be openly discussing about "Drake" while other places probably still don't know, or don't vouch, for the existence of T239.

switch looks like shit on 4k tvs now. no one but nerds give a shit
Case in point: I played Mario Kart 8 Deluxe docked on the 4K TV that my brother bought, and he remarked that the game looks beautiful on their new TV.

Switch 2 doesn't have to justify itself in terms of IQ compared with PS5/XSX. It just has to be technically competent enough to allow decent-to-good ports to the system from the other gen 9 systems. From there, having portability will be a major selling point for many, and provides the Switch 2 with its place in the market.

And I would say that the T239 definitely fits that power range. Of course a device with a portable form factor has compromises, and not every game will look splendid, but the T239 will be plenty capable of delivering great results both from first and from third party imo.

In Drake we trust, and in [REDACTED] do we believe.

If I were in charge of the Switch 2 it'd be called something other than Switch 2
I still WANT Super Nintendo Switch more than anything, here's a few things I genuinely think have a chance (along with a quick tagline to try and frame how I think it would work as a name.)

Nintendo Switch Advance (Advanced Graphics, Advanced AI, Advanced Play. Get the Advantage anytime, anywhere, with anyone.)

Super Nintendo Switch (Super Play needs Super Powers. Super Resolution Gaming. Super smooth gameplay. Abbreviated SSW)

Nintendo Switch Ultra (Ultra HD, Ultra Fast, Nintendo Switch Ultra. The Ultimate Play: Everywhere. Abbreviated NSU)

Nintendo Switch^2 (Stylised with a superscript 2 and pronounced "Squared", tagline: Play Squared Away. Also: Resolution squared. Anytime, anywhere, squared away. Fun squared. Etc. Abbreviated NS2)

Nintendo Switch II (Sylised with two columns between the Joy-Con in the logo. Pronounced 2. "It takes two to [platitude]". My least favourite by far.)

Nintendo Switch (2nd Generation) - OLED Model.
It's bad. But it's possible. Marketed as just "The New Nintendo Switch".

If I were in charge of the Switch 2 it wouldn't even dock, it'd be a strong handheld with the ability to simply cast a video signal to the tv.

I'd call it the DreamCast

While I know none of you can give me an official answer, how likely do you think the next model will be using MicroSD cards? I need to buy a new one after my Sandisk Switch edition one perished, but I'm scared of buying a big GB one when a new Switch successor could be in the future.

Been lurking on this thread for quite a while now and it's really fun to read through it every day during work when i have nothing better to do lol.

Since some are discussing the name of the Switch's successor, i so desperately want Nintendo to call it the "Switcheroo".

Most consumers are in the “good enough” spectrum that if something interests them enough they’ll live with the compromises. With see this with Pokémon every year. Even those who have standards will grumble & still buy at times.

The phenomenon your talking about is called “word of mouth” which isn’t that big of an effect unless the game is truly a technical nightmare. The “Wii reputation” is basically gatekeeping by enthusiasts & is something I’m not a fan of. People should play where & however they like. Statements like, “why would anyone ever play this on a Nintendo device since it’s been ported elsewhere better. I guess if the Switch is your only device then you can.” This is just no & is something we need less of.
I’m not sure what Nintendo needs to overcome from an era that was over a decade ago at this point.

They've completely dropped any reference to a transition. I'm starting to believe in cancellation theory
Eh, I don't think they've talked about a transition except when explicitly asked about it. When they've just been asked about new hardware generally, they've basically said what Doug Bowser has here, that there's nothing to announce, Switch is still doing great, etc., etc.

The only notable thing about the comment is re-iterating the "uncharted territory" point, which didn't get a particularly positive reaction from investors or analysts when Furukawa used it. My guess is that Nintendo have chosen that phrasing partly as an excuse for coming in under estimates last quarter, and also to try to soften the blow of the inevitable big drop in sales they'll have in their FY24 estimates. There's only so far you can push the "our hardware doesn't usually stick around this long" excuse, though, and at a certain point you have to show investors you actually have a plan to reverse the decline, the only viable one being to release new hardware.

If we're in July with still no signs of Switch 2 I will agree 100%. Until then their full year fiscal year and AGM that's forward looking will tell us more as they are unlikely to announce plans for the next FY in the tail end of the previous fiscal year with the 3DS press release being a bit of an outlier. That's been my point

You can disagree but Doug 's messaging is in line with setting up for such an announcement. He avoided answering the Switch 2 question by saying true things about the Switch 1, which incidentally has no major Nintendo releases dates past July, a first in many years.

Also nothing to announce sounds and reads a lot softer than no announcement and the former is almost always used when people respond to questions about things that are happening behind the scenes but they can't divulge the details yet.
