News Nintendo Switch Online - Game Boy Advance March 2023 game is Metroid Fusion, out March 9th

Imagine when they get to Mario Pinball Land and they have to spin it like a big deal enough to fill one month by itself

Also like the first N64 roadmap, seems they're going in order presented. So Kirby is next and golden sun is last

I think they’ll keep GBA monthly. And I still think N64 will go back to monthly
Nice, glad we're getting maximum velocity

I’m glad Nintendo’s trailer showed the « Metroid 4 » title screen, like it did for Super Metroid (Metroid 3) and Dread (Metroid 5).

So does this mean the entire 2D timeline is playable in some form on Switch? Can't remember if Metroid 2 is on GB yet

The marketing on the JP side is focused on that fact.

Surprised NoA aren’t leaning into it.

Now this... this is epic

To be honest. I thought 1 game per month was expected lol.

I saw no reason to increase drops when how little they showed upcoming.
Also I don’t think they really have any Nintendo systems waiting in the wings to add to NSO now, so I sort of get why they’d not want to blitz through all the significant GBA games in a few months.

Yes, we want everything now, but you know damn well that if we got everything now, people would just start complaining about months without new games instead. There is sort of a finite amount of games they can add to NSO as we know it and this is a platform that Nintendo wants to last for years to come.

I feel like Nintendo fans have been complaining about drip feeds of virtual console games since 2006. Not without reason of course! I guess my expectations have just been adjusted over the years to the point where I’m no longer disappointed with this lol

Also, Metroid fans have been living large recently!

I wonder if the plan was always to drop Fusion at this time. Or maybe Nintendo's surprise at how well Prime R is doing forced their hand.

Especially since this series traditionally does better in the west. But then our box aet isn’t as amazing when we do these sort of collages

Fusion is one of the best Metroids. If you haven’t played, you owe it to yourself to do so.

Oh damn that felt fast, I’ve made a good dent in Minish Cap but barely touched the others yet. Just too many games these days!

Still puzzled why they didn't go with Zero Mission first.
My guess is that they wanted the fourth chapter in the 2D Metroid saga on Switch, and that in Nintendo's eyes, Metroid on NES and Zero Mission are interchangeable from a story standpoint. It was probably more important for them to have the complete saga available on Switch as soon as they could than to have another iteration of Metroid 1 available first.

One game a month for GBA, huh? I guess they plan on supporting this subscription service for a loooong time.

Shocked none of the hardcore Nintendo fans on this forum are cringing at "Game Boy Advanced"

I'm cringing
We all met without you and decided it would be more cringe to bring it up

But good catch lol

At the very least, GBA can sustain one game a month. For a few reasons actually

1. GBA is really one of the first Nintendo systems where every game in their catalogue is worth playing for most people. No more filler titles like Urban Champion, or Rivals Turf, or Jelly boy or whatever.
2. Unlike a system like the N64, GBA has an extensive catalogue that can keep going.

It literally has both quantity and quality. So I think they can really do 1 GBA game a month.

I'll note that the JP video for Fusion is actually titled and formatted in a way that suggests that future GBA updates can contain more than one game. It follows the style of the FC/SFC and MD videos rather than the N64 ones.

If it makes you feel worse, Japan will probably either get two games a month or there may be a month that overseas doesn't get anything, since FE6 is on their slate between Kirby and FE7.

Or they compensate by giving the west some obscure game no one really cares about.

really excited for fusion but god, one game a month is such a bummer. it's gonna be like 2027 before the GBA essentials are all out.

Still puzzled why they didn't go with Zero Mission first.

Two reasons. First, they must have wanted the OG Quintilogy available on Switch. Why they didn't have the first four available before Dread is the real question. Second, they're surely saving Zero Mission to shadowdrop a double pak release that will also include a Samus Returns port :p

I just hope it isn’t too long until Zero Mission is out, lest I cave to pressure and buy it on Wii U.

…I should do that anyway before the eShop closes.

This is cool! I never beat fusion, I got stuck halfway through and then other stuff came along so this is nice.

Unlike the N64, the GBA has a wide selection of great games.. So I do think we could see more than one at a time in the future.

One GBA a month is the worst timeline, and the fact that we've gotten exactly one N64 game since November 1st and 0 Genesis games since December makes NSO Expansion Pack feel even more like a rip-off than it already did. New systems should mean more regular content, not excuses to slow roll even more of the line-up.

Super annoyed with Nintendo just constantly finding excuses to make NSO a worse service with this sort of philosophy.

We getting Hard Mode or nah, Nintendo? Please tell me y'all went the extra mile and language patched the Japanese version for the rest of us to enjoy 🙏
Narrator: They didn't

lol I was so excited to see Fusion I didn't even consider this may be the only update we see this month

I was/am hoping the Oracle games are both releasing this month too. I've only played Seasons.

They're really trying to keep them metro androids in the picture eh?

Dread was my first one - and the first Search Action I really enjoyed - so will give this a spin after I finish Prime (still 2 artifacts to go).

Idk how yall have time for wanting multiple drops every month. Minish Cap, for example, is upwards of 15 hours long. Goldeneye is what, 10 or so? Then we got standard releases like FE Engage and Octopath, and my GOAT Metroid Prime. It's wild.

Furukawa alt detected

It's literally the only service that only adds one game per month

You think I'm playing literally every game that comes to NSO?

I'll be honest - people want multiple drops a month because not every game is going to interest every person; and plus, we used to get games more frequently than one a month as well on all 3 Virtual Console services and NSO as well - even back when NSO was just one platform.

I replayed Fusion last year, but man is it such a good game. People knock it for its linearity but I think it's prime environmental storytelling and works super well.

I'm not really sure why people expect more than one game a month, it's clear the bulk of all the releases are Nintendo games especially post launch, and they didn't exactly publish 100s of games for any of these systems. If you do multiple games a month we'll just hit the same wall the other systems hit faster, which is nothing at all releasing. It's a shame of course, but why keep expecting otherwise until we have evidence that third parties are really on board?

Yeah, I don't get why people are shocked or surprised. Seemed fairly obvious to me that's the route Nintendo would go down.

Not to say it can't be criticised; but the drip feed approach has been there forever and there was no sign they'd change it. My guess is this particular mix of systems is all Nintendo plan to provide until they update or overhaul the subscription, and so therefore they want to make sure they have games to space out. And it's certainly a shame that this means we'll end up waiting who knows how long for some classic games to be available because the potential GBA selection is pretty big; certainly bigger than N64.

There were 48 GBA titles that weren't in the initial batch that were either localised to all regions, or wouldn't require a single change to be released outside of Japan (this last part just covers the bit Generations games). If we got two of these at a time, once a month - they would run out in March 2025. That doesn't seem like running out way too early to me, and that's not even counting any of the Japan-only stuff (of which we already have at least one confirmed with FE6) or anything from the safe-to-assume third party contributors (Sega/Atlus, Konami, Capcom, Koei-Tecmo among others).

The N64 rollout didn't have people as worried with being 1 a month, due to how much smaller the N64's library is but I think the frustration is at least in part understandable, because the GBA's library (even just first party) isn't really small by any stretch.
