StarTopic The 2023 Completed Games Thread

Status
Not open for further replies.
I've been working on my backlog recently and am actually starting to make a dent!
Part of this is due to buying less new games lol, but part is also because I'm actively encouraging myself to go back and finish older games. I have a second memory card for my Switch with mostly unfinished games on it, and I've been keeping it in the system by default.

I also created a group (aka "folder") for games that are nearly finished so I remember to get back and complete them before looking for something new to play.
Aside from completing the games, this also allows me get a better sense of "discovering" them more fully, and to have a better appreciation for the thought and effort that went into making them, which is equally satisfying, if not more so.

Older games I've very recently completed:
  • Black Bird
  • Super Punch Patrol
  • Steamworld Dig
Previously completed games:
  • Cruisin' Blast
  • Fishing Star World Tour

Older games in which I've recently made significant progress and am now close to completing:
  • Rogue Trooper Redux
  • Radiant Silvergun
Older games in which I've made noticeable progress after a long hiatus:
  • Snipperclips Plus
  • GRID Autosport
  • Cuphead
  • Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
  • Rayman Legends
Older games in which I've made a little progress:
  • Tumble Seed
  • FAST RMX
Newer purchases which I've also been playing:
  • Onion Assault (gotta support Hörberg!)
  • Persona 5 Royal (lol this will take ages to complete)
  • Civilization V (this will take even longer lol)
Other than that I've been recently enjoying N64 NSO - especially F Zero X and Golden Eye 007.

7. Fire Emblem Engage: Dedicated the past 2 weeks completely to this and it was worth it. It became one of my top 3 FE games and it's a shame it doesn't have NG+ to try different things without starting from 0.

1. SAMURAI MAIDEN
2. Legend of Zelda
3. Mighty Gunvolt Burst
4. Funky Kong Country Tropical Freeze
5. Bloodstained Curse of the Moon: Nightmare mode.
6. Astalon

6. Fire Emblem Engage- Ended up liking this one more than Three Houses, really liked the break system and the rings (lol). I did like the fact it only had one path and it looked much nicer than Three Houses. I had plenty of characters I liked and was pretty bummed when I couldn't fit them all in on my team. The story is just whatever though, but some of the support convos I got where really fun. Probably within my top three for FE, would probably be higher if the story was more interesting. I really hope they drag the break system to newer games at least.

I held off on the DLC, but I hope that it's interesting enough when they fully reveal it as I wouldn't mind hanging out with some of these characters again.

Game Five
Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels
[NES Online, Switch]
[4.5/5]

The Lost Levels had a reputation for being too difficult, the opposite of fun, and inappropriate for American audiences. But we live in a rewindable world now, baby!

Considering there is a way to get infinite lives in the first level, the game may be designed to be difficult and unfair but not impossible. I found a couple looping sections in castles to be very annoying but otherwise things landed on the fun and challenging side with rewind available. I was reminded of my love for the intensity of a good round of Mario 35, blazing through a sea of enemies while minding my jumps.

It takes a wild amount of confidence in your level designing to release a sequel to such a popular game where so many other elements are the same. And the levels are excellent from start to finish. While the difficulty is ramped up, things are more fair than your average Mario Maker level lol. The punishments are often playful, like the poison mushroom in the first level or jumping over the flag to find a warp zone back to the start of the game. And it really feels like you are building a skill as you master the game.

You can play as Mario or Luigi in the Lost Levels. Right after I finished my Mario run, I started playing again as Luigi and got accustomed to his slippery nature. I think I called it a night around the 6th world with Luigi.

I suppose I can see why NoA was hesitant to release this in America simply because Mario was so popular with children. But we're all adults here so this comes highly recommended!

1) Super Metroid (NSW)
2) Metroid Fusion (Wii U)
3) Metroid Dread (NSW)
4) Sonic Frontiers (PS5)

5) MX vs ATV Legends (XSS)

Finished every event in the dirt bike career. There's still all the ATV and UTE events, but those aren't nearly as fun as the bikes so I'm calling it done. Overall I really enjoyed the game. It's way more forgiving than the Monster Energy Supercross games, which makes it a lot more fun to pick up and play. Great track design, decent visuals, mostly ok performance, kinda bad soundtrack. But I usually listen to podcasts or whatever when playing racing games so that doesn't matter to me.

It's so bad that I've only completed 1 game but that's cause I play games like Rimworld, Cities Skylines and Stardew that really don't end lmao.

1. Fire Embem Engage: Came into the game more excited than most. Can't say it met my expectations. I appreciate what they were trying to do with the ring system but it was a clunky system. The UI was confusing in that everything is there for you to see but it's too much and sometimes you really do just not see something or simply forget. The Somneil is a pathetic excuse for a home base lmfao. The story is bland and 90% of the characters lack any dimension whatsoever. The writing is amateurish at best. Could've been done by someone from Ao3 writing a self insert character for a shonen anime. And that may be disrespectful to ao3 writers.

With that said the gameplay excels. The maps aren't boring like Three Houses, and it does require you to think strategically at times. It also keeps you on your toes as it should. I can ignore the same old boring end conditions for each battle because of this. This is a game where the actual gameplay overshadows everything. But everything else is a slog. [8.0/10]

Yep those "endless" games are really eating into gaming time. My current addictions are Civilization, Don't Starve Together and Slay the Spire.

On the topic of games that I have finished though, my 3rd completed game for 2023 is Serial Cleaner. It was, uh, alright. Kind of a half-baked stealth game about disposing bodies. The AI is not that good and they're way too easy to dupe. That said it's silly enough to play through. Props to the totally not Aliens level.

Wasn't able to keep updating my post in last year's thread so we'll see if this year will be different lol.

Sonic Frontiers
Never Awake
Fire Emblem Engage
Kirby Deluxe
Gal Guardians
Legend of Zelda TotK
Pikmin 4
Cereza and fhe Lost Demon
Tales of Symphonia
Metroid Prime Remastered

Absolutely recommend Never Awake if you like twin stick shooters. Some of the bosses, especially the final boss, are awesome. It's about a little girl in a coma having never ending nightmares about the things she fears the most. Some caution though, there is body horror in two levels of world 4 involving teeth and gums if that bothers you but definitely like the story. Also wish they allowed me to see the awesome credits again.

Cute short game. Definitely one of those things are kind of sad and how do people move on.. but it felt decently hopeful all the way through despite how sad a lot of the other characters were.
Its mostly puzzles that I didn't find particularly difficult but I did enjoy the aesthetics of the game and it was a nice palette cleanser of a game between longer titles.

By system:
PS5 - 1
PS3 - 1
NS - 1

  1. Lost Judgement (PS5) - 135 hours - 10/10
  2. Fire Emblem: Engage (NS) - 44 hours - 5/10
Probably my biggest disappointment of the generation. Three Houses was my favourite Switch game, I played through it 10 times. Engage... It's a Fire Emblem game for sure and that's enough for a 5, but... The battles are alright, on par with Fates: Birthright and the Engage mechanic allows for some fun strategies, but everything else was just so bland. The character design is very eh and the writing/character development in story and in supports, is just horrible. Such a letdown coming from 3H. The only thing it has over 3H is that it runs a bit smoother, that's it.

  3. Ryu Ga Gotoku: Kenzan! (PS3) - 70 hours - 10/10
Ended up really taking my time with this in true Yakuza fashion. So much side content and so many really well written substories. It's hard to believe this is a 15 year old game, so so good.

Backlog:
Yakuza: Dead Souls (PS3)
Yakuza 1 HD (PS3)
Yakuza 2 HD (PS3)

Planned:
Hogwarts Legacy (PS5)
Like a Dragon: Ishin! (PS5)
Pikmin 4 (NS)

Retired:
Sports Story (NS) - I grabbed this at its launch as I loved Golf Story, but I was in a different place when that came out and I'm just not feeling this one. I might get to it down the track, but yeah, it didn't grab me in the hour I played.

Game Six
Super Mario Bros.
[NES Online, Switch]
[5/5]

I played through it three times last night.

27. PREY 2017

A wonderful game which I wish had more quality spooks and more enemy variety.
I was engrossed in the story and the exploration but grew tired of the same-looking enemies.
Kudos to the game for using the same plot twist TWICE and making it successful both times, though. Overall, a great experience I'd recommend to anyone. Hoping the sequel rumors were justified.

While Mario 3 and Mario World are larger, more ambitious and expansive games, I still do love Mario 1 a lot. Such a replayable game with a great flow, what an amazing first go.

you've beaten twenty-seven games already this year? O.O

In the nick of time, just before the Direct, I beat Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, like beat beat.

For every level I beat it and:
-Got all the KONG letters
-Got all the puzzle pieces
-Beat all of them in hard mode
-Got all the KONG letters in hard mode
-Got all the gold speedrun medals

Let's see if I can summon a new DK game hehe. That aside though, this game is amazing. Definitely in my all time top 5

I'm having a very interesting relationship with my job nowadays. Not to get too into it, but bosses decided it's best to leave me w/o work and still pay me 75% of my salary. Wish it was a better thing than it sounds like.
Combine that with the fact that I've played a lot of smaller games (I think I've beaten a few Bomberman titles and like 6 Mega Man games, some Contras...) and you get that number. I think by January 20th I had about a game a day beaten. Working my way through some larger releases now, so it'll slow down, especially since I got gamepass and checked out a few titles I dropped.

Bolstered by the GBA NSO drop, I decided to power through my NSO backlog and finished Castlevania Bloodlines on SEGA Genesis! Finished it faster than I expected (with copious abuse of rewind, of course). The spritework is fantastic and really sells that dark and moody atmosphere. As for gameplay, controls about as well (and as stiffly) as you’d expect a retro Castlevania to be, but I didn’t feel like there were too many cheap shots.

Now on to GBA NSO, I’m so excited

9. Kirby's Dream Land [Game Boy] (10/10)

The perfect game comes to our beloved Nintendo Switch Online. 17 minutes well spent what more needs to be said.

Game Seven
Super Mario Bros. 3
[NES Online, Switch]
[4/5]

I've always been a little lukewarm on SMB3 compared to the original and World, and I still feel that way after this playthrough, but I did enjoy it. My favorite of the new power-ups is the frog suit. More silly abilities, please!

The game is bursting with ideas, but if you like to play fast, the scrolling airship levels feel more tedious than fun. And why do we have so many battles against Boom Boom? Jump, jump, jump and done.

The game includes some pretty inventive world themes like the giant and pipe focused areas. And it's cool to see such an extravagant game on the NES.

I think I'll be moving to the GB NSO games next too, looking forward to it.

7: The Last of Us Part II (PS4)

My word. I don’t think I can adequately describe what I experienced. Just amazing.

2. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

What a nice little game. About 2-3 hours depending how quickly you get used to Mario's floatiness. Nothing to write home about but it is a good time. The space world needs more levels. Those were my favorite levels in the game. Boss battles are as traditional as it gets. 3 hits to the top of the head and that's it. Final Boss battle with the one and only Wario was good. A little surprising how it was done, but that's a good thing.

Overall my biggest complaint was that the pause screen when you are in a level is not epilepsy friendly lol. So if you run the risk of seizures or get headaches(like myself) with flashing lights, do not pause in the middle of a level. I was using the GBC filter so idk how the other two filters look. [8.0/10]

28. Hi-Fi Rush

Honestly might be my game of the year. It's SO GOOD. I haven't felt this giddy over a game in a long time

  1. Hades: I didn't like this much on release, I'll never understand all the praise it gets. So I gave it another chance to see if I was missing something...but my opinon hasn't changed a bit: It has an extremely shallow combat system in which the build is much more important than player skill. It's the second game from SuperGiant that I play (the other being Transistor) and both times I've walked away with the same impression: They're the perfect example of what happens when you have simplistic gameplay, you polish it a lot and you wrap it in a very good presentation.
  2. Sifu: Amazing game, I couldn't put it down. I love how you start getting your ass kicked and barely making it past a level, but later you're able to stylishly destroy even the hardest boss. I also like a lot how there are many new moves to unlock, so as you're getting better you have more and more moves in your arsenal, so you always have to keep improving and learning how to juggle more options every time.
  3. Tohou Luna Nights:A very sweet surprise! It's a short Metroidvania based on a bullet-hell IP with an amazing combat system, really clever mechanics and incredible boss fights. It's a bit linear and it lacks a good dash move, so exploration suffers a bit, but it more than makes up for it with it's incredible gameplay systems:
    • You attack by throwing knives, which uses MP and recharges slowly over time.
    • You can slow down time for a short while by charging your attack.
    • You can stop time completely using your time gauge, which recharges over time.
    • While time is stopped, your attacks will use the time gauge instead of MP.
    • Some elements react differently when time is stopped. Normally things will just freeze in place, but yellow stuff will move in reverse, green stuff will only move when time is stopped, purple stuff is completely unaffected...This is used in really interesting ways through all the game, both in attacks that the bosses use and in puzzles you find in normal rooms. In fact, the game does an amazing job in teaching you all these little things through puzzles that grow in complexity and then it tests you with a boss that will use that concept in some challenging way.
    • You can use special attacks like throwing a multi-hitting chainsaw upwards, a knife barrage, a stunning electric knife...These consume a lot of MP but are very useful, specially against bosses.
    • Like in bullet-hell games, you can graze enemy attacks by getting very close to them. This will recover your HP, but if you do it while time is stopped you'll recover MP instead.
    • THE GRAZING MECHANIC IS GENIUS: Bosses will kick your ass the first times you fight them. Then, you'll start to learn to avoid their attacks, which may include learning when to stop or slow down time for the most tricky attacks, while still being able to recharge it on time for the next attack where you'll need it. Then, you'll start to use more special attacks to deal more damage more quickly, which will increase the rate at which you consume MP. So you'll have to think about a way to graze the boss attacks to replenish MP. But this will use time, so you have to manage your time gauge more carefully to still be able to use it for the more tricky attacks. But you may also get hit, so you will also need to learn to graze attacks without stopping time to replenish HP. As you're not using time, you will then have more time to replenish more MP, or even to attack the boss if you have enough. Each boss becomes a fantastic multi-layered action puzzle in which as you get better, more options and tactics become available to you. The game ends with an optional boss rush in which you can destroy all the bosses that gave you so much trouble one after the other and marvel at how much you have improved. The graze mechanic is the key ingredient that makes all of this possible. I put this mechanic in an altar next to Splatoon's ink or Ori's bashing, it's that good.
    • I loved Sifu, but for now this is my GOTY.
  4. Tunic: Starting it this weekend, I have heard great things about it.
  5. Metroid Prime Remake: This will be next once I'm done with Tunic.
  6. Record of Lodoss War-Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth: Another short Metroidvania by Team Ladybug, the creators of Touhou Luna Nights. After how much I loved that one I'm itching to play this.

Hi-Fi Rush
Man I really have to start digging into my XB first party backlog.

I actually have the same impressions as you, and I have the same general feelings about Supergiant games— solid if unexceptional gameplay mechanics propped up by sublime artistic direction and music.

Waiting for a sale on this one for Switch. Got to play it for a bit on a friend’s PS5 and I love how crunchy the combat is.

Kirby's Dream Land

Maybe this one is cheating, because even being the first time i make a full playthrough it just took me around 30 min. to complete it, but it was still worth it.

It was the series' first steps, obviously, but i think it's a masterpiece. A well crafted, light and fun experience that surprisingly get a lot of things right. I enjoyed it a lot.

Game 4: The Great Ace Attorney 1

Well that’s The Great Ace Attorney(1) down! Tons of plot threads setup for the second game, can’t wait to see where those go! Solid effort and probably my fave so far(only played the og trilogy otherwise). Sholmes is such a himbo and Iris was adorable. Also loved how the Russian revolutionary actually shows up in the final case XD on the jury no less! one heck of a fun ride! Probably taking a little break before starting 2 tho

Previous games:
1)Yoku’s island express
2)Live a Live
3)Arcade Paradise

1. Desperados III [ PC ] - 9
2. Ace Attorney Investigations: Prosecutor's Path ( Replay ) [ DS*] - 10
3. Resident Evil Deadly Silence [ DS*] - 8.5
4. Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney ( Replay ) [ 3DS ] - 8.5
5. Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box [ DS ] - 7
6. Professor Layton and the Unwound Future [ DS ] - 7
7. Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies ( Replay ) [ 3DS ] - 9

8. Koumajou Remilia: Scarlet Symphony [ NS ]

I almost ignored this game because it looked like Symphony of the Night, but is actually a classicvania, and a pretty solid one. Reimu has a basic whip attack, plus can use a longer range prayer card attack, and some special magic from other characters, as a kit is even more tight in quantity than something from the Belmonts, since you have access to all your arsenal at all times, which is a different approach than the sub weapon system, which is an interesting approach to designing the enemy encounters, Reimu can also fly, the offset is not being able to turn your orientation in the air, can only use the weaker long range attack, and you are a lot more floaty in that movement, it takes it into account well, and is not something that one can use to cheese through levels, the encounter design is also done in a way where you can potentially avoid defeating corridors of enemies, at the expense of not getting enough magic for the special abilities and the long range attack, there are other interesting mechanics in the game, like touching enemies and being hit by bullet type attacks don't deal much damage, while physical attacks or long range attacks with weaponry cause a lot of damage, much like how it works for Reimu's attacks. Boss fights implement bullet hell attacks and for the most part the game manages to implement them very well, tho I still can't figure how to do the Patchoulli fight without putting that fight on a lower difficulty with those attack patterns. Overall I wouldn't say is as polished as something like Touhou Luna Nights, but still pretty good.

9. Gargoyle's Quest [ GB ]

Demon Crest is a fantastic game, but I never played the other Gargoyle games, so I'll fix that now. Gargoyle's Quest is pretty interesting, is a very linear game, but it has an overworld, moving across it has enemy encounters if you want to grind vials to buy extra lives, the levels themselves aren't Metroid esque like it would be in Demon Crest, but rather have a lot of precise platforming in them, some can be annoying, but for the most part is a pretty fair but challenging little adventure, it has a really good atmosphere boasted by a really good soundtrack, with some pretty interestingly moody tunes, that overworld theme is rather great.

10. Ace Attorney Investigations ( Replay ) [ DS ]

The Investigations duology is cool and interesting, rather than just a set of cases with some having a connective tissue like in the main series, Investigations deal with a grand mystery interconnected across every case, the pacing of gameplay is also different by having small segments of investigations, followed by a small cross examinations/confrontations and so on, rather than having a grand investigations sequence, then a grand interrogation sequence, etc. like in the main series. In that interconnected mystery, it basically means that the Investigations games have no "filler" cases, a neither good or a bad thing really, just means that it all feeds into a grander plot and payoff, is neither a good or a bad things because I don't find case 2 to be super interesting, still not very sure in how I feel about case 3 even on my third or fourth run of this game, but 4 and 5 remain in the peak fiction territory. Also love Kay, can't beat Maya type characters in this series.

2. Panzer Dragoon Remake (1/14/2023) - Pretty short game and fine but nothing amazing. I frankly could barely tell what was going on in the story. The game is somewhat pretty (in like an older gen style way) and the shooting seems alright. I only got better at the game once I switched to a mouse. For some reason the controller on Steam worked the first day and then never worked after that. Trying to play this with a trackpad was way too hard. Thankfully the mouse was much better.

Yeh agreed it's cool to get more DKC like games. I haven't played Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair but might give that a shot next.

It's been a while but I completed 2 more games!

3. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (2/12/2023) - Fun game but pretty off the wall. For a game boy game, it's great, but it's interesting how 2D Zelda translated much better to the GameBoy than 2d Mario imo. They had to make the sprites so big and thus the screen real estate was kind of small. I really liked the final level & the final boss fight with Wario.
4. Kirby's Dreamland (2/12/2023) - I've only played the "Spring Breeze" version of this from Kirby Super Star before. Short game but a lot harder than the Spring Breeze version. Normal game was fine. The extra mode was a whole different ball game. The extra mode would've taken me a ton longer without save states (with save states I was able to learn the boss patterns since I could try over and over again). I still did never quite get how to dodge the blimp's attacks, especially in extra mode. Things almost seemed kind of unfair at times when things just flew onto the screen.

It's kind of nice playing some shorter games. I typically get into really long games. Still playing through Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle & Yakuza 0 currently. Getting close to finishing the former, at the beginning of Yakuza.

29. Beacon Pines.

A cute Night In The Woods cross Goosebumps game. Pretty much a VN where you walk around in a strange town. Wish its central gimmick was more used, as the game pretty much forgets about it by the end. Still, as it's on GamePass, would recommend. It's like 5 hours long and is cute/spooky.

5) Immortal Fenyx Rising
Well that’s game 5 down, just finished . Was pretty fun tho honestly the combat system tended to be a bit annoying. Narration was great, one of the best applications of unreliable narrator I’ve seen in a game. A final boss that ignores the main combat rules/cycle of the game tho, that’s annoying and adds unneeded difficulty. Felt like more a standard Ubisoft game that happened to tack on BOTW’s you can fight the final boss/do the order at any time but felt way too gated since boosting stuff generally still required grinding materials. Narration is what made the game a fun standout experience.

06. CrossfireX (Single Player Campaign, Season One)
CrossfireX announced its end-of-service recently, with its complete shutdown — which includes the single player — scheduled for May. Unfortunately that also means that any related items they were selling are no longer being sold, and you had to purchase the second — now known to be the final! — “season” of the campaign. Unless you’ve already bought it, that content is already lost. So I only played Season One, which is on Game Pass. It’s Remedy’s first FPS, and the movement and basic feel of everything is good! But the story and design all basically scream “mercenary gig,” a way for the company to fill its coffers while it takes on a heap of high-profile projects. This should tell you everything you need to know: early on in this game, you and an AI buddy come across two hapless enemies and you pick which one you want to murder in a double takedown. REPLAYS
Persona 3 Portable

Second game of 2023 and it was Epic with a capital E: Dungeon Encounters. I have mapped out every title in the game, seen the credits roll, and feel very accomplished. There's still a few optional enemies I could try to beat with zany HP levels, but I'm happy to have seen this through to the end. It's been so refreshing to play an RPG that isn't saddled with forgettable storylines and trope after trope. This is like playing a tabletop game. It will stir the imagination. You're given just enough backstory for each character to piece together your own narrative. And it's quite tense mapping a part of the labyrinth where you know the enemies (or denizens) can absolutely wallop you and leave your parry KOed until you return to rescue then.

The sound effects in this game really add to the ambience. Sound design is top notch all round, even if the battle music can get slightly repetitive until it changes every 10 floors.

5/5.

My 2023 list:
January
1. [NSW] Regency Solitaire - 4/5
February
2. [NSW] Dungeon Encounters - 5/5

Wintermoor Tactics Club
I loved this! But it is a bit buggy on Switch, just to pre-warn you. My game crashed several times during my play through, so save often! I never usually lost much progress, but it was irritating, along with some lengthy load times. All the technical shortcomings are well worth bearing with as the game is charming and the battles very fun.

3: WarioWare, Inc: Mega Microgames (NSO:GBA)

Never got to play this game for some reason. I got into Warioware with the DS game so I should've been aware of this at the very least. And I wish I had been. It's just a fun Warioware game. I think some of the prompts could've been better for a couple microgames but that's hardly a big deal. Of all of the Warioware games that I've played I would say this is the 3rd or 4th best one. It's interchangeable with Smooth Moves for me.

[8.5]

Games I already completed this year:
1: Octopath Traveler (23/01)

2: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe + Wave 1-3 of the Booster Course Pass (28/01)
I bought the game more than a year ago and back then I played quite a bit online and 3-starred some of the singleplayer cups as well.
Since I'm finishing some of my backlog I felt the need to finish up the singleplayer part of the game.
I 3-starred every cup in 50CC, 100CC, 150CC, Mirror Mode and 200CC (including the 3 waves of the Booster Course Pass released so far).

Because of this I got quite a bit better at 200CC, more specifically breaking while drifting.
I'm also happy that I didn't have to restart a cup often, most of the cups I 3-starred on my first try.
This game is always fun to play, it never gets old.
I'm excited to complete the other three Booster Course Pass waves!

3: Paper Mario: The Origami King (13/02)
Another game gone from the backlog! I 100%'d the game today.
I received it on my birthday 9 months ago, but I only played it a couple of hours back then.
Two weeks ago I picked it back up to finally play it for real and complete it.

It was more fun than I expected, even though some collectibles were annoying and sometimes there were too many fights with small enemies.
I was surprised at how little assets were reused, the game felt very unique and refreshing even at the end.
The battle system is probably the main star of the game, it's so simple but they used it very creatively!
Great quality game! It's underrated/underpriced in my opinion.

OPUS: Echoes of Starsong - Full bloom edition (Gamepass Cloud, though it's also on Switch)

I started this one to do a weekly Gamepass task and didn't expect to go further, but the simple gameplay and great story hooked me. It's a short game, but you get to know and love every single one of the main characters and most of the support cast. And i can say this as an achievement of the development team: I cried ugly tears in the last hour.

Good stuff, great, even, and it kinda pisses me off to know that i would have probably ignored had i decided to not do that task.

Here we go! Hoping to clear out some of the backlog before Octopath II hits.

Latest entries;

February:
9. Mario Kart: Super Circuit [NSW-GBA]
10. Kuru Kuru Kururin [NSW-GBA]
11. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Champion's Ballad [NSW]

The direct took me by storm and I sidelined some stuff to play a couple of NSO games,

Super Circuit:
It was the last Mario Kart I never played, and while it was decent fun and frankly a bit hard?
I can put it as probably the worst in the series.

Kuru Kuru Kururin:
This was an amazing puzzle game, which started out easy and in the end was so darn hard that I had to take some help from save stated.
Hella fun and fully recommend it to anyone!

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Champion's Ballad:

BotW itch has been super hard to last month or so, so I decided to return to Hyrule and finish off some stuff I never did back in 17-18, I never did play the Champions ballad so I started it, but got sidetracked like you always get when you play BotW and I collected another 50 or so Korok Seeds (but still so much left I am not sure I ever will find them all) and took down another 20 shrines, so now I only miss a few.

Really nice DLC to an even better game. TotK cant come soon enough!

I have almost dipped in on this series on Switch, I've heard a lot of good stuff about the games.. I have them on my dire list of games to play so one day,..

Happy you liked it!

Thanks to you i just discovered it IS a series, and the two prior games are quite cheap on Switch.

I'll be playing these through the year <3

I just finished my first Fire Emblem engage maddening run.. it was the first time i immensely enjoyed fire emblem that i clocked in 160 hours on my switch. I did not remember being so invested in fire emblem games before even though i only played awakening and three houses. Theres something addicting about engage's progression and it's fast paced story. The battles were incredibly brutal yet smartly fair. I may replay again soon to try amd test other builds.

1) Guardians of the Galaxy - Cloud Version (NSW)
2) Rise of the Third Power (NSW)
3) Haiku, the Robot (NSW)

4) Fire Emblem Engage (NSW)

I loved this game. I also loved Three Houses. Very different games in many ways, both showing off different parts of the series that I enjoy. While the story was simple, it felt like a celebration of the series, and a farewell to the past. Feels like this will be on my short list for GotY by the end of the year.

I also have spent some time with Monster Train and FE1. I won't be coming close to finishing either of these games despite enjoying my time with both of them, as the direct blew up any plans I might have had. Now I just have to see if I can finish the Minish Cap and Prime Remastered before Octopath II hits.

So I noticed you can see the exact playtimes for games in the NSO app. Anything similar for the main games? Or just the rounded numbers?

6) SD Gundam Battle Alliance
Well I’ve been on a roll for the last couple days. Technically just a story complete, there’s plenty of post game and unlockables but this is a come back to and chip away when I feel like it game anyways. Overall a lot of fun if more of an Arcady vibe

Previous games:
1)Yoku’s island express
2)Live a Live
3)Arcade Paradise
4)The Great Ace Attorney Adventures
5)Immortal Fenyx rising

A fun DOOM clone. Probably the first FPS in 25 years that isn't first and foremost an FPS, but is actually a "Doom Clone". Not as distinct as other boomer shooters that come out recently, and certainly doesn't hold a candle to wonderful New Blood catalogue of games. 75% of the game is visually very brown and red, even if levels are different. Sppeds up by the end with icy, space, and church levels, but they're each like a level as opposed to the factory that's going on for most of the game, for some reason.

I just finished new game plus for The Callisto Protocol. The update did wonders for the gameplay, much smoother experience. I hope we get a sequel.

I’m currently playing Breath of the Wild for the sixth time in preparation for Tears of the Kingdom with a little Tunic here and there.

Hey everyone! Coming back to fami these days and I'm happy there is a new completed games thread for 2023 🙏

After a really strong 2021 (almost 100 games completed) and a somewhat shy 2022 (4 times less games than 2021) because of big changes in my personal and professional life, I hope that 2023 will be the year when I can start playing a little more again.

So far, here what I completed:

(Side notes:
  • Every game I play is in the "Normal" difficulty
  • Every game listed as "❤" is a game I had a "Crush" on it, like "Wow that game really has something more" (I don't know how I could explain it better so I hope you'll understand lmao)
  • Every game with an "*" is a game I already finished in the past (i.e. can be in original version for remastered game)

1. Bayonetta 3 - 7.5/10 ❤
Great game so far with great and rich gameplay, but I felt like it was a small regression from the second game which was truly a gem. Not that it is bad; as I said I thought the game with really good and had a good time playing it. But I am doubtful about some choices and I almost felt overwhelmed sometimes. Anyway, still love Bayonetta and the craziness of that series, looking forward to what comes next. Might get Bayonetta Origins sonn after release!

2. The Wonderful 101 Remastered - 6/10
Big disappointment on this one which I already played back in the Wii U days but never finished it. I think it has great ideas and insane staging (classic Platinum Games it seems), but so much things are poorly executed. There is a big potential but, yeah, that was not always a fun ride. Almost gave it 5 or 5.5 out of 10 but it would have been a bit too severe in my opinion.

3. Hi-Fi Rush - 8.5/10 ❤
Seemingly the game that everyone wanted without knowing it, based on the reactions and reception. It really was so cool! My biggest criticism would be that the platforming aspect of the game isn't really good, and as a huge platformer fan I think that would have been insane if the game had great platforming on top of everything else. But hey that was great and I hope we'll still see this kind of surprise in the future.

4. Metroid Prime Remastered * - 9/10 ❤
Yeah, what to say about Metroid Prime? The game was already a great game in my mind and replaying it with stunning visuals was incredible. I even prefered this second playthrough than my first one 6 years ago. Metroid truly is one of the best series I know and I'm so pleased that we're living a new great era for it. I hope we'll get Prime 2 and 3, that would be dope

Currently I'm playing Pullblox on 3DS and looking forward to Like a Dragon Ishin (currently I'm finishing all the substories of the first Kiwami game because I'm in a Yakuza hype recently) and The Last of Us PC (already played on PS4) in the coming weeks. There is lot more games that I want to play and that I try to fit in my schedule, like The Evil Within, Sonic Frontiers, Astral Chain... I hope I can play them all this year!

#3: Metroid Prime Remastered

A lot has been said about it in the last week. It’s a treat. Maybe some pacing issues towards the end, but it’s as close to perfect as a game can get.

#01 Aladdin (SNES)
#02 Disney's Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse (SNES)
#03 Magical Pop'n (SNES)
#04 Bonkers (SNES)
#05 Portal (Switch)
#06 Star Fox (SNES)
#07 Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania (Switch)

#08 Nintendoland (Wii U)
#09 Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii U)
#10 Mario Kart Super Circuit (NSO)
#11 Kuru Kuru Kururin (NSO)

I decided to sell my Wii U so I took up to replay all the games I still wanted to play on it one last time.

First I did all the games in Nintendoland in one morning. I don't think I've ever took as much mileage of this game as I could have, but I'm also not sure it offers enough for me. I played a lot of Luigi's Mansion, Animal Crossing and Mario minigames, those were incredibly fun with friends, but the lack of structure meant it was always "hey, let's try this, it's really cool" and then we played it 3 or 4 times and everyone was like "yeah, really cool, now what?", which is my general feeling about minigame collections. The single player games are alright, the Yoshi one is the best but gets rather frustrating later on, same as Donkey Kong. The F-zero and Metroid games just aren't very fun. Zelda is alright, but feels like a demo for something rather than an experience in itself. In the end, I'll always cherish the memories of playing Nintendoland with my friends as that was one of the happiest periods of my life (right before I started to show stronger signs of my depression and getting diagnosed), but the game itself isn't much to write home about.

This was my first time replaying SMG2 since launch, I remembered very little about the game except that it was extremely fun. The more I played of it, the more I was still expecting those jaw dropping moments I had in 2010, and at some point I kinda realized SMG2's geniousity kinda became the norm in 3D Mario ever since, so it's not half as impactful as it was back in the day. I used to say I prefer SMG2 to 1, but now I definitely prefer 1 (I last played it in 2020 when 3DAS came out) since it's the original concept, it has much better structure and story, and the levels feel more like the real deal instead of a derivation or expansion. They're both incredible though, and it's amazing both exist. This was also my first time collecting all the green stars (that got a bit boring, but it's still better than just replaying the same game as Luigi, I suppose) and playing Grandmaster Galaxy, which wasn't half as difficult as I was expecting. I suppose Champion's Road was when the Mario Team really decided they weren't afraid of showing their teeth. I ended up finishing it with 241 stars though, as I didn't have enough patience to do that last perfect run (I guess that was the real challenge huh, but I'm just not interested).

Then, after GB and GBA launched on NSO, I was so excited I dropped other things I was playing to go play some old ass game boy games because why the hell not. I rediscovered how fun Super Circuit was (although I still own the cartridge and had it available this whole time, go figure) and finished the game in 100cc. It's a wildly different game than MK8 and it kicked my ass until I got the hang of it again. I still think it has the most difficult RR in the series by far, it's shortcuts are brutal and if you don't take them, the CPU. This is something I've noticed as well, CPU racers constantly go off road, fall out, or crash into track hazards in this game, while in MK8 this very rarely happens if it happens at all. So I got the impression the CPU feels more alive and human in SC, curiously. I'm still playing it now and then so I might try 150cc and unlocking the SNES tracks which I never understood quite well how it's done, seems random.

Next on NSO I played Kuru Kuru Kururin, which is a fun little game that can be equal parts addictive and infuriating. I managed to get through it legimately until the very last stage which I could only beat with save states, ain't got time for that bullshit. I had fun still, and am glad NSO brought me to try a game that I would otherwise never have played. I just hope those bird people have figured out a more practical means of transportation by now (maybe flying themselves?).

Now I'm juggling between several different games: still havent finished Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair, left Golf Story unfinished (not sure if I'll ever return, the game is honestly super boring), started Wario Land Shake It (last game I have to go through before I finally sell the Wii U), started Prime Remastered, and am playing a bit of Super Mario Land 2 here and there. I also have unfinished runs of Mario Party 1, Pokémon Snap and whatever else I might be forgeting now.
