News (Leak) All Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters RATED for Switch by ESRB

Really excited to play Final Fantasy V. I loved the job system when I played it in an emulator as a kid (FF VI too, of course, but V reminded me so much of tactics).
FFV was the only game I ever faffed about with an emulator for, back when I was 10 or 11.

It made me feel like the coolest kid in the world. (I was not the coolest kid in the world.)

I’ll be glad to be able to buy it all these years later on switch and see how my m memory holds up.

Only FF3 is the unquestioned BEST version of 2D FF3 mostly because it has no real competition, especially in English. After that FF1 is arguably the best version of FF1 with the spell charge system, and FF6 has revamped Opera scene that is a pretty nice perk for this version.

Beyond that though FF2, 4, and 5 are all fine versions of their games. Sadly SE could have shut the door on "best version to play" with a bit more effort on these remasters, but sadly it didn't happen and there's still a strong argument for the GBA and PSP versions of FF1, 2, and 4-6 being the best versions.

Thanks, looking forward to finally be able to play ff1 and 3

I could certainly see them pushing out an update or DLC to reincorporate the work that Tose did for the GBA and PSP versions if they wanted to. Given how these were developed in sequence they could've been waiting for all the games to get their art done before they added those dungeons.

However, since 3 never got a GBA release (as the WSC version which would've served as the base was canned) they'd have to whip up a new set of bonus content from scratch for that. You would also need to do a balancing pass on FF1's dungeons since all the encounters in that were based around the MP system that was scrapped in favor of returning to the spell memorization system. You'd probably have to do balance passes anyways since pretty much all of these games got some sizable tweaks to their mechanics judging from patch notes.

So it's possible but would require some amount of resources and it's unclear if they're part of the vision/budget S-E had for these remasters.
I wouldn't get your hopes up about SE going back and adding any kind of new content to the PR versions of these games. Just seems like a lot of effort for content most players will never even get to.

Sure, but it's also weird to have a series of Squaresoft re-releases that doesn't have superfluous post-game bonus content awkwardly grafted onto it.

What is the last SE rerelease/remaster to add that kind of content? Removing remakes like Live A Live or FF7R cause they're different beast entirely, a lot of SE's remasters in the past decade haven't been adding that kind of tacked on post game content like they did in the 00's. Most of the rereleases/remasters I can think of only have "new" content by means of previously Japanese exclusive enhanced versions finally being localized from like FF12 Zodiac Job System or FF10 International. The most significant new thing added would be Saga Frontiers Remasters 8th playable character, but as I understand they were half finished/dummied out content in the original.

The closest thing FF1-6 have like that would be the Kaiser Dragon. A dummied out super boss cut late in development but far enough along that his text was localized. The boss was finished* and added to one of the new bonus dungeons in 6 Advanced. That was honestly the only thing I expected the PR version of FF6 to add even if there was a new method of fighting that wasn't the Dragon's Den dungeon. Boat has probably sailed on that dream.

*Obviously it's impossible to know if the FF6A Kaiser Dragon plays anything like the dummied out FF6 Kaiser Dragon would have if finished. Regardless of if 6A Kaiser is taking an old model and doing something new with it, or taking an unfinished concept and finalizing it as originally planned, it's still great to see content like this restored and it's a shame FF6 PR doesn't have Kaiser.

Pretty cool, I'm down to grab 4 and 6 to play on Switch (and maybe the others when they go on discount some day).

Part of the point of the Pixel Remasters was to be faithful to the original games, so I don't think it's very likely they add the GBA additions back in.

Does Trials of Mana 3D count or is that fall into your other bucket?

EDIT: Just remembered that Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered is adding a bunch of new content and superbosses, but I don't know how much of that was cut content / dummied.

Been playing the Pixel Remasters on Steam Deck so unlikely I will spring for them on Switch. Currently playing 3 and I really appreciate a modern version of the 2D game, as I do not care for the low-poly chibi 3D visuals of the DS remake.

Also did my FFV Four Job Fiesta run this year on PR, but in future years I'll probably go back to GBA. Mostly for game balance reasons that wouldn't matter for a casual audience.

To be fair, a lot of the side content in the remakes of I-VI...just aren't very good. I has the GBA dungeons which are really just opportunities to fight other FF bosses and Chrondonia which...kind of sucks as a superboss and dungeon. FFIII's stuff is relegated to the 3D games and aren't that special aside from an easier place to farm Onion Equipment. IV has After Story which is a whole different game though the bonus GBA dungeons do have some character stuff. V is Euno but the Sunken Shrine is not a good dungeon and VI has the dummied out remade Kaiser Dragon. Out of all them really only II had anything worth keeping as the Dawn of Souls content gave us much needed character development between characters and story beats to actually contribute something to II's story rather than it being something tacked on at the end.

...hell, Dissidia and Strangers of Origin do more for Final Fantasy I's story and setting than the actual remakes bonus content ever did.

FF6 is one of the best RPGs of all time, and one of my favorites. FF5 is also really fun mechanically and has a really unique vibe to it, despite having a pretty medium story and characters. The job system and mysterious lost locations vibe it has going are a blast.

I know that opinions are mixed on the GBA and PSP added content, but IMO it'd be worth it to bring that stuff back in a re-release at some point. They should bring the DS versions of FFIII and FFIV to modern consoles at some point while they're at it, too!
Whats your favourite 2D Classic Final fantasy?

Gotta be VI, followed by IV. I like V a lot too, but I'm just a bigger fan of the ones with larger casts.

Trials of Mana is a full blown remake, it's essentially a new game being made from the ground up inspired by an old game. It's why I always specifically exclude the 3D remakes of FF3 and FF4 when discussing "best version of each FF game".

The only recent SE remake that imo completely replaces the need for the original is Live A Live. Even then I feel if you enjoy 16 bit sprite work it's probably worth playing LaL SNES at least once just to see how it evolved.

It's completely understandable when these miracle ports come to Switch so late, having to go through an arduous process of rebuilding by a team with the right set of skills.

Which one has the dungeon that turns your entire party into frogs? Inb4 multiple Final fantasies have a level like that you'll have to be more specific. I remember playing it on the DS. I think it was a remake and not a port but I don't remember. I want to avoid that game.

But only Final Fantasy 1 is on the cart. Final Fantasy II - VI require internet connection to download!

3. I think the turning into frogs is just to enter certain dungeons by diving underwater though, once you're in them you can just cast Toad again on your party to turn back, You would have played the 3D version on the DS but they're present in the 2D version as well.

The more annoying thing are the dungeons that require you to be in Mini status, which kills the usefulness of physical classes in those dungeons. I guess they wanted you to explore the job system but they do so with a really heavy hand sometimes. There's a few bosses that demand you bring certain classes too, but there's usually some random NPC who will give you the answer.

these games are perfect for Switch.
Can't wait!
I fully agree! So it's kinda painful to not own a Switch anymore. I'm trying to not waste too much money, and wait until the next model (pro or 2) is released before I buy this myself.

I guess I'll either have to wait even longer, or go with the ps4 versions.

I got tired of waiting and just played these on my phone. They’re pretty good, if you ask me. Like the look they settled on, music sounds great, and hey — it’s FF!

How playable are FF1, 2 and 3 here? Too old school or they got updated enough to be playable by modern standards?

They're still pretty old school, but there's QoL adjustments, some balance changes and bugfixes that mean they're definitely easier and less punishing than their NES/Famicom counterparts. A lot of their more lacking or irritating aspects are kinda baked into the game design and haven't really changed though.

Stuff like autosave and quicksave are universal and help a lot with there being no save points in dungeons and the general 'fuck you' RNG the early games can have. There is an autobattle toggle that speeds up battles and has your characters repeat the last action they took, which is good for grinding. There are also in-game maps available at the press of a button which is a godsend, but unfortunately this doesn't always help with e.g. FF2's stupid trap room dungeons.

The games themselves hew pretty close in spirit to the originals. FF1 uses Vancian Magic (can cast X spells of a certain level, like DnD) again, unlike the other remakes/releases which used MP instead, though the addition of Ethers makes this much less painful. FF3 is based on the 2D Famicom original and ignores most of the stuff added in the 3D remake, though some (and only some) of the class changes from the 3D version got backported.

There's also no bonus dungeons, no Dawn of Souls for FF2 etc., it's strictly what was available on the NES/Famicom.

FF1 and 3 have aged very well. The PR is easily the most playable version of 2D FF3 ever, and the PR is the most playable version of FF1 with a spell charge system. FF2 was always a black sheep even back in the day. For the main campaign I guess the PR is probably the best overall slightly, though I still would rather play a version with the Rebirth of Souls mode if I'm replaying FF2.
