86. Metroid Fusion (GBA) [9/10]

This game can't quite reach the highs of the previous three in the series, but there's a lot to love here. The choice to focus more on story and try to develop Samus into more of a character works to make this game stand out even after Super more or less solidified the formula. Playing as a faster but more vulnerable Samus is a nice change of pace and really puts the focus on the X, who are great villains and double as the power up system which is clever. Highlights include the stretch near the end of the game where you're constantly "breaking" the Area design of the space station and the SA-X, who not only feels like a true threat in a way no other Metroid antagonist does, but also gives what I would call the best boss fight in the series. Great stuff all around and highly recommended, but must be played with a desaturation mod or on an original GBA. Otherwise it looks horrible.

87. Metroid Dread (Switch) [7/10]

To my knowledge this is the only Metroid game that has a boss rush, it really feels like the game was built around these encounters. It feels its best when you're just running around and shooting. In order to make sure the running and boss fights run as smoothly as possible, the game really pulls the camera back and makes sure you're completely in control at all times. The downside of this is it somewhat lessons the apparent emphasis on horror when you're pulled back from the action and Samus is the most capable she's ever been.

Batch update to add several super short 3D platformers, namely Toree 3D, Toree 2, Super Kiwi 64 and Lunistice. All of them are pretty sweet, bite-sized games but Lunistice might just be my favourite of the bunch. It feels unfair to single it out but Kiwi might be the weakest of the bunch because the games it draws from as inspiration (Banjo most notably) don't really lend themselves to super short playtimes. Still, I don't regret my purchase.

32) Super Kiwi 64 (NSW)

I've been looking forward to Super Kiwi 64 since it was announced. And it didn't disappoint! I only wish it were longer. If a game leaves you wanting more that can only be described as a good thing.

33) Firewatch (XSS)

Firewatch has been languishing in my Steam library for years, so it's ironic that I only got around to playing it now that it's about to leave Game Pass. It's short enough that I was able to finish it in one sitting. I really liked the two main characters and their interactions. It was a lot of fun having to actually use the map and the compass to navigate, because they don't label and waypoints or anything. The story was interesting, but I found the ending to be a little flat. I know a lot of people really liked the story, so maybe that's just a me thing. Overall I recommend the game.

37th game finished is DoDonPachi Resurrection! One of CAVE's finest games, and as close to perfection for a bullet hell shmup. A must play for fans of the genre.

#26 Kaze and the Wild Masks (6h)
#27 Dragon Quest VII 3DS (85h)

Kaze was a nice surprise and a delightful game. It is the only platformer I've played that really captures the essence of Rare's DKC, which is crazy for me since those games are so popular but for some reason, they haven't inspired many indies to carry the torch (I think Retro's DKC and Yooka-Laylee are a completely different style of game, by the way, not necessarily worse or better, but I prefer the Rare style). This was made by a brazilian team (which surprised me but makes a lot of sense since DKC seems to be much more popular in Brazil than in other countries overall, relative to other games of that era), and it's a really good one. The level design is amazing and shows that the team understands what makes platformers fun. The different masks add variety, although for even more variety I wish some of the levels gave you the option to play with or without the mask. The game sadly is very short (only 4 worlds with 8 levels each) and if I had one bad thing to say about it it would be that the artstyle is bad, especially the enemies, which are very unlikeable vegetable monsters. I hope they get to make a sequel in the future, this has a lot of potential to grow as a franchise (but please leave the vegetable thing behind).

Dragon Quest VII I finished during the span of a whole year in three long sprints. It really is a daunting game, even if the episodic structure benefits breaking it into pieces. Overall I liked the game, but I think it's tied with VI as my least favorite DQ. I feel its at least 20h too long. Some of the vignettes could have been cut and wouldn't be missed; most of them are great, but there are like 3 or 4 that are very uninteresting and feel like filler in a game that desperately needs some editing. When I finally finished all the islands and thought the game was wrapping up, I found it still kept going for like another 20h and it was just too much. It's not the longest RPG ever like people say, not by a mile, but it definitely feels too long because it's a 2D top down RPG with all its limitations. DQXI is much longer but I didn't mind its lenght at all because the story is told through cinematic cutscenes and there is more of an overarching plot that keeps you invested. DQVII is structured like a SNES RPG except that it's 3x the average lenght. I also think the game makes some really questionable choices like switching the party members in and out all the time for no reason which makes progression feel very sluggish. And, as much as I usually love DQ music, VII sorely needed more pieces, it's way too long and by the time you're visiting the 50th town that plays the exact same theme as all the others, you just feel like turning the volume off. I still enjoyed the game, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who isn't already a DQ fan.

It's cool to see so many updates this morning!

49. Dr. Mario (NES Online, Switch)

I’ve been poppin’ pills with Dr. Mario lately. Each round plays like inverted Tetris - the most intense focus is required at the start of the round, and as viruses are cleared, the pressure eases off. It was, is and shall remain a classic puzzle game. Also, black-coated Dr. Mario was my main in Smash for a while.

16. December 6th - Harvestella (9/10)
This is this year's big deception. Cosy management game? Farming sim? Cute game with cute villages? All of those, of course, but Harvestella evolves, mutates and escalates until it's a rich, layered, full-blown 40 hour JRPG with all of its grandiose themes, intricate final dungeons and the occasional bombastic boss battle. It has significantly exceeded my expectations, become a Top 5 GOTY frontrunner, and overall had me enraptured all the way down to the bitter end.

The less flattering aspects are of course there. Flimsy combat. Stiff animations. Maybe having those 40 hours be stretched a bit too thin. But the positives far, far outweighs the negatives. It showcases and executes the concepts of management, resources and planning, and shows how ridiculously addictive those systemic design patterns can be. It's just the most satisfying thing, waking up, harvest crops, plant new crops, water them, go to a town/village, buy stuff, build and upgrade stuff, go to dungeon, slay stuff, gather stuff, go home, sell stuff, sleep. Rinse and repeat. It's just nuts how this game can make you care so much about buying stellar wheat, just so that you can process it into flour, just so you can cook Lethe Hamburger and Egg, just so you can use it as a healing item, just so you can progress into a dungeon, just so you can gather materials, just so you can sell them so you can buy .... you get it.

Add to that the sublime art direction, an excellent soundtrack, a world map I can't shut up about... and last but not least, lets not forget the excellent cast. They're precious to me already, Cres, Aria, Emo, Istina, Asyl ... everyone. The game lets you spend so much time with them via a Persona-esque closeness system, and it's more than welcome, because all of them are so elegantly realised. This game, y'all.

#21. Kid Icarus Uprising

Probably the best game of the 3DS library, Uprising is a cross between a rail shooter and a third person shooter. Although the controls are controversial, to say the least, I think it plays wonderfully, with excellent level and boss design. Its story and characters are also extremely charming, with tons of hilarious dialogue. Overall, a really nice experience that I hope gets ported and perfected on the Switch.

Absolutely as good as you've heard and a dream come true for me: be a little cat in a cyberpunk AI town? Absolutely incredible. A surprising amount of heart too that I didn't see that coming at all to be honest. The AI interactions were WONDERFUL and I clawed as much as I could across many a rug and sofa.

Give me more Midgar inspired games, I'm here for them!

Finally finished Shadow of the Tomb Raider yesterday. After playing through the previous reboot entries earlier this year I had to take a longer break not to burn myself out on them but it's close enough for me to mostly remember them as three distinct titles. Shadow has been unfinished in my library for years since I abandoned it about halfway through for reasons I don't remember. After finishing it with most of the side content done I think that in some ways it's the best entry and in others the worst. There's a lot that could be written about it but I'll try to keep it short.

What's positive is the great graphics and locales as well as actual tombs with some clever puzzles. It seems the devs realized this which is why the DLC that's included in the Definitive Edition mostly consists of more tombs, which are varied and unique. The tombs almost feel like small Zelda dungeons with some platforming thrown in there. They're all pretty fun and make for the most memorable moments.

The rest of the game doesn't really hold up, sadly. The story and Lara's characterization are pretty bad, as is the (to put it mildly) problematic imagery for certain characters. The issues with the gameplay are similarly glaring. For one, they reduced combat to such a degree that it almost feels like an afterthought. Which in itself isn't an issue but it also makes large parts of the upgrading system completely inconsequential. I'm convinced that it was a bigger part in earlier iterations during development because there's also stuff like the mud camo that I maybe used twice. What nearly broke the game for me was the exploration. The small collectibles really blend into the lush environments so it's almost impossible to make them out without using survival instinct, the series's version of detective vision. The previous entries were already bad in this regard but it felt like Shadow took it even further. So for large parts of the game you're just zipping around activating survival instinct every three steps. Great time.

Anyway, there's a lot to like but similarly a lot to hate about this game so I can definitely see why some people have it as their favourite in the reboot trilogy while others think it's the worst.

22. Death's Door

Let me generally describe this game to you, it's a metroidvania-ish action game that focuses on precise combat, has a somewhat minimalistic artstyle, its plot is somewhat sparse/vague and focuses a lot on death/souls... if this sounds like Hollow Knight, Dark Souls, and many others it's because you definitely get the same vibes while playing Death's Door. Now, don't get me wrong, that's not a big negative, the game plays great and feels super polished, but there was always a weird feeling I couldn't shake off that I was playing just yet another one of these games. There was also a fairly large amount of enemy reuse that made the experience feel a little less unique as well.

In any case, it's a really fun and enjoyable experience so, if the description fits the kind of games you like then definitely give it a try.

50. Space Harrier II (Sega Genesis Classics, Switch)

I've mostly been playing Shining Force this week and am in the middle of Chapter 3. Last night before falling asleep, my tactics brain felt like it needed a rest, but I wanted to play something.

I ended up staying up a bit late and beating Space Harrier II! Wow, what a game.

This game still feels like a ground-breaking, unique breath of fresh air. It's hard to comprehend that it's from 1988. It's a rollercoaster ride. It's sci-fi, it's geeky, it's trippy, it's punk. It's pure arcade and really fun.

Before I forget as I am going to immerse in DQ Treasures

36. Tactics Ogre Reborn: While SRPG are not my forte I really enjoyed this. GReat gameplay, music but for me what makes it better is the dialogue and VA. Every character has it's own charm with this. There is a ton of postgame but I was burned on the last boss so I'm going to let it rest for now

37. River City Girls 2: Overall it's more RCG just with more balanced and with more combat options. The boss fights are better, and have more items to addapt to you game style. The main issue here is that there are a lot of bugs, some even that can softlock the game. I'm sure all of this is going to be patched in the western release, but still makes me think on why Arcsys decided to release the game in this state.

27. The Darkside Detective : A Fumble in the Dark

This was on sale recently, so I picked it up since I liked the first one well enough. I felt like some of the cases were a little more obtuse, some requiring you to see and select small items that were easily missed. I realized in one of the later cases that there's a button that shows all interactable spots on a screen, which probably would have assuaged that. Overall, I think I preferred the first, but this is more of that, so if you enjoyed the first game, you'd probably find enjoyment here too.

28. Sumire

I had purchased this awhile back on sale and played through it today. It's a nice, short game, really loved the art. It's an adventure game that's mostly side scrolling about a young girl who recently lost her grandmother, and she meets a sentient flower who encourages her to have the perfect day. The story is simple, but effective. A playthrough is only a couple hours at most, and there are achievements that would require multiple playthroughs if that appeals to you.

Well beat the main story of Kirby Forgotten Land. That was a blast… Cept now I still need to finish Xenoblade and it’s time for bed XD. started the post story and got all the soul fragments in the first Forgo section. Still missing waddledees. I have other games to work on so I’ll return to KFL’s post game another time

Sadly? Short and sweet is a selling point for me. I'm actually interested in Kaze now haha.
I was really glad to read Leo enjoyed it so well. It was one of my faves last year. It was plenty tricky to beat, especially when going for 100%. It started out feeling too derivative of DKC to me but quickly found its own footing and identity.

  1. Valkyria Chronicles 4 (Steam)
  2. Triangle Strategy (Switch)
  3. Dragon Ball FighterZ (PC)
  4. Chip & Dale NES - Disney Afternoon Collection (Steam)
  5. Resident Evil Revelations 2 (Steam)
I forget if I beat any other games on Switch atm, but will update if I did. I have a bunch of games in progress.
An update

6. Duck Tales 2 NES - Disney Afternoon Collection (Steam) - Pretty quick experience overall but fine.
7. Final Fantasy 7 Remake (PC) - Fun game overall. Combat system was great and the parts derived from the original FF7 were fantastic. There unfortunately was a lot of padding. Some of it good (the stuff with Jessie) and most of it not great.
8. TMNT: Shredder's Revenge (Switch) - Fun time playing this game both single player and online.
9. Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past (NSO SNES) - Replay of my favorite game of all time. Great as always.
10. Mega Man 11 (PC) - Frankly not a great Mega Man but serviceable. Probably the first Mega Man game not to have memorable music though.

Working through Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle & Crash N'Sane Trilogy now.

It's been a pretty good year really.

38th game finished is River City Girls, which I decided to play for the week since the Trial was gonna end on the 13th. I think it's one of less mechanically satisfying beat em ups I've played, because everything feels so stiff. Dashing is the biggest offender; I have to consciously think that I have to press the arrow buttons twice with just the right timing, otherwise the dash doesn't register. Once you unlock more moves it gets a lot more fun, comboing never quite reaches nirvana level, but it's cool enough. The bosses however feel cheap, like I think sometimes it's not clear when they're in an invincible state? I got through the most of them by spamming the first aid kit. Also: the story isn't as amusing as it thinks it is.

29. Pilgrims

Short game from Amanita Design. I really liked it overall. The part I thought would lead me to a new area though was actually just the end of the game, so that was a little disappointing. Still, great art, nice humor, and just a fun concept.

20) Super Kiwi 64 (Switch)
21) Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (Switch)
Oh me oh my I wish my brain worked better because I'd love to take the time to wax lyrical about this game because I think it is really very special and the best Xenoblade has been so far. 140 hours with it were 140 hours well spent and I cannot wait to get back to it in the New Year to tackle post-game. I'll look forward to further DLC, too.

15.) Resident Evil 3 (2020) - This was a pretty divisive game at launch due to its length and design decisions, but for $5? No complaints here! It's a nice companion piece for REmake 2; the same, great engine with a lot more ammunition so you get a more action-packed experience.

16.) Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (Remake) - I grew up with the sequel and only played this as a demo. This was a treat! 2.5D feels like a forgotten genre, and after playing this I wish that it wasn't. Creative level design, decent visuals, and a fantastic OST should merit this game more discussion than it currently receives.

17.) Splatoon 3 - They learned all the right lessons from the Octo Expansion here; short, focused levels > longer, more sporadic stages. I finished the Splatoon 2 campaign out of obligation but found myself coming back to this one instinctively when I was in need of a good, short burst of entertainment. I think I prefer Octo Expansion overall because of difficulty, though that might just depend on the mood I'm in at any given time.

18.) Super Kiwi 64 - A shotgun blast of nostalgia. And it is well made, to boot! The environments lack the charm of its inspiration, but the movement is better than a lot of its more modern contemporaries.
19.) River City Girls - This is the third time I've tried to pick up and play this game. Finally, it stuck! The beginning is a little dull because of how limited your moveset is, but as you gain more experience and upgrade your arsenal at the dojo it becomes much more engaging. I loved stringing together all kinds of zany combos with my basic moves and then my ultra powerful cheerleader/volleyball abilities. I generally prefer brawlers like Shredder's Revenge to this, as I think the enemies have a little too much HP leading to a lot of downtime in some battles. Overall, though, this is a good time, and it is carried hard by its music and overall style.

I had no clue about this thread lol. Don't know the order I played them really. Plus, my adhd makes me bounce in between games. Hoping to get through The Quarry and Hades before the year is out though. I played more than I thought though.

9. The Wild at Heart (NSW) It's indie Pikmin and I really liked it
10. Stray (PS5)
11. Portal 2 (NSW) 1st time playing it and its outstanding. Best game I've played this year
Ive really slowed down, works been a killer
12. Cult of the Lamb (PS5) Really got in to this!
13. Bayonetta 3. I kinda rushed it near the end because GoW was imminent so I'm keen to go back to it

Hope to finish GoW this week then back on to Splatoon 3 and Bayo 3. Also played a ridiculous amounts of Marvel Snap recently

14. Resident Evil VII: Biohazard Gold Edition

Its been a while since I played the game and I never played the Gold Edition content. So I started off with the main title and I forgot how fun it was. Its not my favourite Resident Evil game ever, but it has some fantastic highlights. The first person camera works in its favour, but the moments with the Baker family is fantastic stuff. Jack, Marguerite and Lucas are absolutely insane and it has some fantastic moments.

The molded are the most basic enemies since the ooze back in Revelations. Makes enemy encounters somewhat boring. Game does end in a great way.

I won’t play the Banned Footage, but I did complete both End of Zoe and Not a Hero. The former is a first person brawler, sure why not? Was a fun little romp. Not a Hero was not bad either. Better than Chris his campaign in 6.
15. Bayonetta 3

Finally completed it. Have to think about it. The Bayonetta combat is great. As good as it ever was. The Viola parts… conflicted. Ending is strangely satisfying really.

39th game finished for 2022 is Strikey Sisters. Classic Breakout style of gameplay spiced up with cool powerups. There's a few design flaws, particularly how the charged move is borderline useless, but otherwise it's arcade goodness.

30. Papetura

A short game, but pretty cool overall. It's a point and click adventure where everything in the game has been handcrafted from paper. It really looks great, and was clearly a labor of love. It's very short though, if that's a turnoff: I think I played maybe an hour? Longer than Wide Ocean Big Jacket, but shorter than Old Man's Journey/Donut County/Bulb Boy and 3-4 playthroughs of Pilgrims for context from my all software page.

I haven't updated this in a few months, so here it is:

1. Pokemon Legends: Arceus
2. Triangle Strategy
3. Kirby and the Forgotten Land
4. AI: The Somnium Files
5. Trails in the Sky
6. Trails in the Sky SC
7. Death's Door
8. Luigi's Mansion 3
9. Trails in the Sky the 3rd

12. 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim
13. Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward
14. Bowser's Fury
15. Axiom Verge 2
16. Zero Time Dilemma
17. AI: The Somnium Files nirvanA Initiative
18. Trails from Zero
19. Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope

The last three are what I've completed since the last time I posted in this thread. I enjoyed all of them, but Trails from Zero was the highlight for me. It took over all my weekends for about one month.

Mario + Rabbids was great as well. It took me a bit to get adjusted to the new elements, but I think it did a great job of taking everything the first one did well and making it even better. Finding effective spark/character combinations felt really satisfying -- I won't give too much details without a spoiler tag, but my Rabbid Mario build could dominate a lot of the maps in later parts of the game. I'm glad Ubisoft went ahead with making the sequel! The team really put in a lot of effort with both Mario + Rabbids games.

Hoping to make it to 20 games before the year ends. I should be able to do it since I'm getting some time off work for the holidays!

31. ElecHead

Really enjoyed this one. It's a short puzzle platformer where you play as a robot that electrifies everything it touches. You very soon get the ability to toss the robot's head, which allows you to progress past some of the rooms (you get 10 seconds to walk with the body and get back to the head). While I didn't find the rooms so difficult as to not be able to solve them without outside help, I did have a few moments that left me impressed with the solutions when I figured them out. Definitely would recommend if you like puzzle platformers.

20) Super Kiwi 64 (Switch)
21) Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (Switch)
22) Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope (Switch)

I really enjoyed this overall, even if I didn't find it compelling enough to bother with much side content. The novelty has worn off a little, but it was good to get a sequel and nice to see the team try to take some sideways steps in terms of structure and design. Big fan of Bowser's inclusion and Rabbid Rosalina. Be interesting to see if the series continues, and if so, where it goes next.

38. Dragon Quest Treasures: The last one of the year, and what a way to end it. This game became my GOTY because it's a joy to play it. If you haven't look the impressions on the topic for this game, this is pretty much BotW but DQ. Exploration and discovery of treasures is the name of the game and it's done very well, with very well done and complex maps where you always find something new. The combat is on the simple side, but that's not to say it's easy. On post-game you can get destroyed if you aren't putting attention to your party.

32. Lil Gator Game

Very charming game. Felt like it was a good length, slightly longer than A Short Hike was. This game reminded me in a lot of ways of that game, albeit a 3D platformer vs an isometric game, with a lot of quirky animal characters with funny dialogue. Takes a lot of inspiration from Zelda, even including its own version of a parasail, shield surfing, and a stamina meter. If you're looking for a chill game to play through on weekend, I would recommend it.

40th game finished for 2022, and it's none other than Dark Souls 3. The first Souls game I've ever beaten!

I've had this in my Steam library for a while and only booted it up this year in order to combat Elden Ring FOMO. I bounced off the first Dark Souls pretty quickly, and going into DS3 those first couple of hours had me wondering if I could ever acclimate to the slow, stamina-based combat and encounters.

But hey, I pushed through and I'm glad I finished it. The dark fantasy setting is exquisite especially when you reach the abandoned Firelink Shrine. I love how the various areas wraps around themselves; you're constantly learning shortcuts and basically faster ways to get around. Enemy designs are also wonderfully grotesque.

But did I enjoy the combat? Eh. I feel like you don't really have any good options if you want to be an archer or mage, so you kind of have to go melee. And you mostly get short swords, or at least most of the better weapons I found were short swords. I'm also not a fan of the slow-paced battling, where I'm basically waiting out a enemy's flurry of attacks until I can get my two strikes in, or find a chance to parry. Of course, that might be partly because I was scared of dying (thus less likely to experiment with my offensive options unless I'd just leveled up and have nothing to lose) and having to trek back to retrieve my souls.

I also think a few too many enemies are cheap? Especially the larger bosses where I think I should be hitting them but they're not getting hit, and conversely I sometimes get hit by invisible attacks and sometimes I can get whacked by a tentacle and it whiffs through me. So yeah, in general I think the combat is difficult, but not fun, exactly? I'm definitely the kind of guy that loves my fighting game/character action game combos, so this comparatively simpler battle system simply might not gel well with me.

It's interesting to compare it to Monster Hunter: Rise, another game series which I initially bounced off of and that has stamina-based combat. Might do that in its own thread, actually.

23) Tunic (Xbox Series S)
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this game and, if I can find the time between wrapping presents and the arrival of my siblings, I might go back to it and use a walk through to get the good ending in the next two days.

The Zelda comparisons are inescapable, for obvious reasons, and it's kind of funny that this time last year, I played Death's Door, another Zelda-esque indie game. Between them Tunic and Death's Door follow through some of the lines I wanted to see the portable Zelda team explore on Switch. Death's Door really boiled the game down to the basic ability set of bomb, bow, boomerang and hookshot, building a focused but dynamic adventure out of that seemingly limited repertoire. Tunic explores two angles I wanted to see Zelda take: a minimalist narrative, ala the very first game, told largely indirectly through the game's environments (and the very clever manual collecting system in Tunic), and folding in some of the open world Zelda mechanics into top-down Zelda (parry, dodge, stamina, upgrade systems).

The best thing that can be said about Tunic is despite its layered homage to Zelda, it is also very much it's own thing. It's also a clever, moving game that conveys its narrative and themes in a distinctly videogamey way, which I really appreciate. The level design can be a little obtuse (not overly keen on how awkward it can be navigating the hidden paths), and the combat only really felt right to me very late in the game when you get the crown , but the way you progress through the world frequently felt very elegantly designed. Like the best Zelda moments, many times you progress simply by playing around and exploring, thinking that you're goofing off, or hopelessly stuck, only to find the designers have planted you on the right path all along.

Obviously, the central design of the green clad, sword and shield welding main character is a major Zelda reference, but there's a bunch of other visual cues and structural and thematic cues taken from Zelda. The windmill in the village, for example, is classic Zelda. Collecting red, blue and green gems to unlock the sacred temple is classic Zelda, especially as it opens up a second, darker act, as you retread the game's altered world, faced with the ruin you failed to save. Equally, the game's central narrative premise - of a mission and a burden handed down heir to heir in a vicious cycle, needing to be broken - is reminiscent of the curse Ganon and Demise place on Link and Zelda.

I'm trying to finish Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous (extra side-quests and whatever else I missed) before I'm finally done with it.

But goddamn, I'm slower at completing video games than I used to be when I, well, played video games and completed 'em in one setting (before my long hiatus from video gaming).

I will say this:

Having a Steam Deck to play your games instead of just your gaming laptop has made things much, much easier in terms of playing them and playing them for longer periods of time (compared to when I just had my gaming laptop to play them on).

I can't quite explain it. I guess it's psychological. I just prefer having my Steam Deck reserved for my PC games.

20. God of War (2018)

Just a fantastic game all around. Story, gameplay, performance (played on PS5), all of it was top-notch. This was my first experience with the franchise, so I think some moments would have hit harder if I had more history with it. Still, I think this works as a great entry point for anyone interested in the series.

My only complaint was enemy variety. There were a noticeable amount of enemies that came back as bosses with the only difference being their color or elemental affiliation.

I've already started Ragnarok, but I'm also putting some time into the Crisis Core remake. One of those will definitely be finished within the next week or so!

15. Bayonetta 3

Finally completed it. Have to think about it. The Bayonetta combat is great. As good as it ever was. The Viola parts… conflicted. Ending is strangely satisfying really.
16. The Quarry

If you played Until Dawn, you know what to expect. It is fun though. With some familiar faces (David Arquette! Ted Raimi! Ariël Winter!) its another fun interactive romp which leans on horror tropes with teens, but in a very enjoyable way. It isn’t as surprising as the original, so if you didn’t like UD, I think the Quarry isn’t for you either.

Some spoilers about my first playthrough;

- the werewolves suuuuure look like the wendigo’s from UD
- I couldn’t kill of Abby she is nice haha[/spoiler)

An update

11. Crash Bandicoot 1 (PC) - Interesting but basic game. Kind of shows its age even with the remake.

Just beat my final game of the year - The Legend of Zelda (NES - NSO)!

Possibly my last update of the year! I've got a couple games going, but it seems unlikely that I'll finish any of them before the new year.

32) Super Kiwi 64 (NSW)
33) Firewatch (XSS)

34) Pokemon Scarlet (NSW)

There's not much I can say that hasn't been said. There's an excellent Pokemon game here, buried beneath some horrible technical issues and supremely ugly graphics. The gameplay is fantastic, and the story is pretty good. I liked it. I hope the next game is better. That's all I'll say.

35) Metroid (NSW)

I played this for Aurc's Metroid community event which is going until sometime next month. I played using a video guide and save states. The original Metroid does a lot to establish series mainstays, but the lack of a map, the copy-paste rooms, and the way you have to farm for health makes it not super fun to play in 2022. If you have a fan-map handy and aren't afraid of save states, you can have fun here though. Just be ready to rage at the Mother Brain fight.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3: 157 hrs
Boy this game was a blast from start to finish. Story, music and gameplay is top notch. Definitely got a lot from having played the first 2 games, especially some of the fakeouts. Seems it’s really playing into the post game content, but while I did the recruitments I’ll do the actual sidequests when the next dlc drops and breath for a bit

No clue if I’ll beat another game before end of year but it’s a quiet week and I’m messing with a couple games

21) Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (Switch)
22) Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope (Switch)
23) Tunic (Xbox Series S)
24) Pikmin 3 DX (Switch)
An excellent game, and I'm really glad i rebought it. The Olimar missions don't add much but are fun enough. Probably do the treasure gathering in Mission mode because I'm happiest with Pikmin when I've cleared the obstacles and I'm trying to multitask as Pikmin beaver about the place on their various errands.

90. High on Life (Xbox Series X) [9/10]

The definitive Game Pass game, and from what I've played the best FPS in over a decade. This game feels like a throw back in all the good ways and brings the genre forward in others. Really fun to explore and enjoy the world, with a satisfying story and characters. Rocket boosting around and killing off enemies is really satisfying too. A sequel or follow-up is inevitable after it's well-earned success, here's hoping this one gets a LRG release. Good way to possibly end 2022.

I lied! I have one more update before the end of the year.

33) Firewatch (XSS)
34) Pokemon Scarlet (NSW)
35) Metroid (NSW)

36) Metroid II: Return of Samus (3DS)

I've now completed every (official) 2D Metroid game!

I was intimidated by this game for the longest time, but I really shouldn't have been. It isn't difficult at all, especially compared to the remake (diggerbot and mecha Ridley shudder). The most difficult aspect is the world itself, and the fact that you don't have a map to guide you. Luckily it's 2022 and there are tons of maps online. Is that cheating? I don't think so!

One last update before the year end, so got some indies in the sale and manage to finish them,

39. Elechead: Very good puzzle game, while I'm not a fan of monotone color schemes it works here with the theme of the game. Also some of the collectibles were really hidden.

40. Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair: finally managed to play it, decent plataformer and I like the way the alter the stages from the overworld. Also the impossible lair was really hard, but manage to end it with 4 bees

41. Beholgar: Had this on my list before as I was interested in the barbarian metroidvania concept. I think it would have work better as a classicvania as the normal quest is really a straight line and since it's punishing there are pretty much save points every 2 rooms. There are some sidequest but never found the items they ask for. Also it has some bugs, nothing that break the game thankfully but I can see the team has little experience in this thing.

As part of my Exploring NSO project I managed to beat this game. It's a weird Kirby golf spin-off that's actually pretty fun. I posted some more in-depth impressions on my NSO thread, but overall I really enjoyed it. It's surprisingly tough and maybe a little too precise but it's pretty good.

I managed to sneak in one more 2022 game after finishing Ragnarok last night. It was a fantastic game, and I'm really glad I gave the series a shot. I can see why it won so many awards!

There are some loose ends I'll have to take care of in 2023. I was hoping to play Bayonetta 3, but it overlapped with Mario + Rabbids and I just didn't have the time. Same goes for Crisis Core since I was going through both God of War games when that came out. Also, I never managed to play Elden Ring, but it's sitting right next to my PS5 ready to go whenever I feel like it.

It's been fun keeping track of how many games I beat. I will be back for this again in 2023 for sure. Happy New Year, everyone!
