StarTopic The Game Awards 2022 |ST| An Ad Sent On

I don’t think the Mario movie will be THAT big of a thing there, since they just had the second trailer. Maybe remind us about it and show the trailer again, or a short exclusive clip. I would be very surprised if that’s all they have, though.
I think the most they have had in the Switch era was four things iirc so definitely not impossible they have more than one thing. They have made more tweets than usual about it this year so I’ll never rule it out and I do agree it’s probably a clip more than a trailer, just less optimistic is all.

As a Switch only gamer that would still suck for me. Nintendo's absence means no Switch games beside Crash Bandicoot and the best selling console right now getting ignored just like that makes me really sad.
Perhaps I should say relative good year for the Game Awards lol. Last year we got Persona 4 Arena at least for Switch which was super rad! Maybe Katamari will show here?

Yeah, we got Persona 4 Arena. What else we got? I remember a Sonic Frontiers trailer and Tunic reveal (PC-Xbox only back then) but that's it. Pretty heartbreaking to see that was all Switch got.

All Namco remasters were revealed at Directs and I expect the same with We Love Katamari.

For those about to watch I salute you

Meanwhile I'm going to do something else like always and will catch up on trailers on the 9th

Place your bets now, what random third party exclusive game will Nintendo announce/show off? 2018 had Marvel Alliance 3, 2019 had Bravely Default 2, and 2021 had Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak (no longer exclusive). I think we'll see something similar here.
Not technically exclusive, but as NabiscoFelt mentioned earlier, Octopath 2 would make a ton of sense. We’re currently waiting on the next trailer, and Asano already has a history of showing up at TGAs.

My pipe dream for the show though is Ace Attorney. It was Like a Dragon Ishin for the longest time, but now that it’s finally coming to the west I can start dreaming about Ace Attorney 7.

I can't remember how they did it past year, did they post the show on YouTube after it was over to watch not-live? I'll be getting home from work around the time it ends and wanted to put it on.

Ooh this is interesting

Celeste is a game I really appreciate the artistry involved in even if it's not quite my thing, but from what little we know of Earthblade it's much more up my alley. Pretty excited to see more of this

I wonder if there is a chance we get Mega Man news from Capcom tomorrow?

I’ll definitely tune in while playing Pokémon Scarlet in handheld mode. It’s tradition at this point, even as lackluster as some years have been. Plus, Geoff just radiates this circa 2004 to 2009 games industry feeling that I love and miss. If that makes any sense, haha

You know what the best part of this year's awards is? No more cringeworthy Stadia ads.

In some ways, I'm glad this is at stupid o'clock in European times, because I can just wake up and see if there were any decent trailers.

It also sucks that it's at stupid o'clock.
Yeah it’s between 2 and 4 in the morning for me, and I’m working the next day. Reckon I’ll just read a summary of the winners and watch the trailers tomorrow.

I’ll be attending tomorrow. Can’t wait! Haven’t been since it was closed to in-person events due to Covid.
I almost bought a ticket myself. Friends dissuaded me, lol. Hope ya have fun!

Thanks! Have you ever been before? I’ve been attending every year since 2015 or 16 and attending Microsoft’s Xbox Media Briefing’s since 2009, and they’re so much more fun in person. Just being there with the crowd and experiencing it on the big screen makes it all worth while. Encourage you to go next year if you can and maybe even persuade your friends to join you since they kept you from this one!

Why don't we have believers :(

Nope, I've never attended! It'd have been a first time experience. I fully believe you, when you say it's so much more fun in person. That's why I wanted to go. Friends advised me to simply watch from home, but I was also just at L.A. Comic Con the other day, which contributed toward getting my event fill for the month. Honestly, I probably should've just said what the hell, and bought a TGA ticket anyway. I'll definitely be looking toward going next year! It's super cool that you've been going for years!

Because you’re asking people to bet, and while something like a 1/3 chance of Persona something-or-other sounds pretty reasonable to me, that isn’t a bet I’d put money down on unless it was a dead cert given that otherwise it’s ‘in 24 hours you’ll either be right or wrong’. Maybe a framing like ‘what do you think is likely or has an outside chance’ would have gotten more people to talk about what you think has a good chance, if you’re betting you’re almost certainly more likely to be correct about something we know little about if you just go ‘no’. :)

So I had already written off the Mario Movie for the Game Awards, because we already got a trailer just last week. But here we apparently are.

It just so happens that during that Direct one particular phrasing from Miyamoto caught my attention: "It's almost done! But oops, I am not supposed to talk about it!"

Note that he never said what "it" is. Naturally you would assume he means the movie, but then they proceed to talk about the movie directly after, so really that statement makes no sense at all.

It has been pointed out that releasing a new Mario game of some kind (2D or 3D) to coincide with the movie release would be a clever marketing strategy. It's been a while since the last 3D and 2D Mario releases too. But Nintendo never said anything so I had written that off too.

Until that statement by Miyamoto, which in hindsight makes no sense if he was referring to the movie.

So...what if...just saying, just saying.

Of course I know this is kind of very far-fetched speculation, the more likely scenario is that Miyamoto said was awkwardly phrased by accident or even somehow lost some meaning in translation. It is also more likely all we will see tonight is a new movie trailer and nothing else. I am aware how unlikely it is, so I won't be disappointed if it doesn't happen, but if it DOES, I'll treat myself to a nice meal because I can say I caught the hints.

So don't take this too seriously, I just have fun speculating is all. Lol

I'm not subjecting myself to this again, last year's event almost made me depressed about gaming.

I'll check out the announcements tomorrow and be gladly surprise if there's anything I'm interested in.

It’s supposed to be read that outside of the presentation and trailer he can’t say anything else about the movie. Like he really wants to tell you Wart the Frog is in the movie or whatever (making this up) because he is so excited to talk about him, but he is not allowed to.

There is no other meaning there.

That is totally possible, more so than what I said. Like I said I don't expect to be right. ;-)

But even if that is the case, you gotta admit that it is a weird thing to say during a Direct about the movie. Who wrote that script? Or is this just me because English isn't my first language? XD

I don't want to open my heart to disappointment. I learned that from Atlus a long time ago...

Sorry yeah, just you. There is no other meaning there in the Direct.

I do think there is a great chance for a Mario game of some kind near the movie though!

Tomorrow is my birthday. Very rare for it to ge the day of a big game event so I’m hoping for some surprises this time. Even joining @LukasManak22 for Zelda that would be one hell of a birthday surprise
Happy birthday! We got this.

It's about the movie, just Miyamoto going little bit off the script. But regardless, Nintendo would never reveal the new EPD game at TGA and certainly not that big as is a new Mario game. The last possible chance of revealing 2D or 3D Mario for tie in closer to movie was in September, we are already past that timeline (but releasing that big of a game month or two before ToTK would not make any sense either).

EDIT: The japanese Direct says it's as a "The movie is almost finished" so it's just a translation.

Ok, turning away from my wild speculations and willing things into existence...

I think the most likely possibility still on the table (not necessarily announced tonight tho) is a 2D Mario game if anything. I don't think they would announce a 3D Mario game this closw to release and then have it release so close to Zelda.

Happy birthday! We got this.

Thanks for the rectification of the Direct quote. I was expecting it to me something where they took liberties in translation.

I agree it's too late to announce a Mario game for March or April now, at least a 3D one (2D still has a slim possibility i think). And I also agree it would be weird to have two of their A-grade IPs release so close to each other. This is not a hardware launch year after all (that we know of). If this was 2017 circumstances I would disagree, but from all we know, it isn't.

But also, Nintendo has dropped big stuff at the Game Awards. The first BOTW gameplay was there. Bayonetta 3 was announced (despite that not being one of their top franchises). Several Smash characters were announced there. And most importantly, they shadowdropped (!) the final BOTW DLC Wave. So Nintendo has done some pretty big stuff at the Game Awards. And Geoff loves tying things to Hollywood in every way that he can.

At the same time there have been times Nintendo has done absolutely nothing for the show. So it's really anybody's guess. I am not expecting a Mario game reveal here at all, but I would never say "Nintendo would NEVER", because this is Nintendo. You think you got their MO figured out and then they do the exact opposite of what you expect.

So TLDR; No, I don't seriously expect a Mario Game Trailer tonight. But I also don't think anything is categorically out of the question with Nintendo.

Since Capcom STILL has yet to announce a 35th anniversary stream of their own, it's enough to make me wonder if they'll just do any or all of them here.

You'd get more prospective eyeballs for a major project like "Taisen" at the TGAs compared to anywhere else...

Just @ me if anything interesting gets announced for switch. No desire to watch dorito pope presents anymore

I hope this time they can announce the winners of the awards with a little more enthusiasm and suspense.

Long-term I hope these awards can survive without needing large game announcements and just the merit of the games they're celebrating

Tbh I don't know if this was a meme format or not, but I found it poor taste. Geoff puts his all into this, of course he'll hype it up to there and back again, which is maybe a bit too much at times. But it's still people's own responsibility to not get their hopes unreasonably high up.
Yeah, I was just talking about how Geoff actually responded to this. But personally I don't have any problem with TGA, It's Geoff's job so of course he will always hype it up, if people don't like it, just don't watch it. It always fells like mini E3 for few hours and it's better to have this than nothing.

Geoff was a funny, good sport about this with the reply and thankfully the other person felt some remorse afterwards in a follow up so it worked out well thankfully. Could have easily gone bad / mean / awkward.

New 3D or 2d Mario? No way they release the movie without a game to go along with it. That would be throwing money away.

Welcome to being a Nintendo only gamer.
