Me watching cats as they watched people play Stray >>>>> 90% of games that came out this year, at least.Hot take
The fact Stray is a goty nominee brings into question the entire process for how TGA nominee voting is done.
yep. the game isn't even in the top 100 2022 games on metacritic. usually the indie game that gets nominated is among the best received of the year. is just being memed on twitter for a week all it takes?Hot take

(The Legend of Zelda enters the chat)If Pikmin 4 doesn’t win every single award next year then the TGA people are all hacks.
No, because it's not even in the top 100 reviewed games of the year. I feel like Stray getting the nom despite being having a lower average review score then half a dozen games that were also nominated in other awards is very alarming. Why? Because you personally didn't like it?
It would be amazeballs, but nah. Not happening.I think XC3's main theme, with the flutes, will be the opener for the GOTY orchestra section
In general, looking at Metacritic and using it as your marker for what should be nominated seems very faulty in its logic.I haven't played Stray but it was one of the biggest (in terms of online traction) games of the month in which it released. It's a good-looking game with very positive reviews (c'mon it's an 84 on OC), but more than anything, it has DOUBLE the amount of reviews of any other indie title of this year.
It could simply be that it's one of the few indies that everyone in the jury has actually played, hence why it's being picked over Tunic, Immortality, etc.. I don't see anyone bringing up Norco, Freshly Frosted or what have you, even when they have a 91 on opencritic, given that they have 10-20 reviews and less people have heard/played the games.
Alarming in what sense? I don't think metascore is really relevant (till an extent)No, because it's not even in the top 100 reviewed games of the year. If the voters haven't even played the games that reviewed above Stray why are they even on the nominee panel? This is like how best animated film at the Oscars almost always just goes to Disney's biggest movie of the year.In general, looking at Metacritic and using it as your marker for what should be nominated seems very faulty in its logic.
It's more likely that the people on the panel played it and adored it. If they have cats, there's an extremely good chance they did based on my own small circle of people who a) have cats and b) played Stray.
yeah like, what are we doing here? the panel is worthless if they only play the most popular games. i mean sure the average gamer is more likely to have played stray than the other indie games this year but if you're working for a games publication and have the responsibility to nominate what you think are the best games of the year surely more should be expected of you?If the voters haven't even played the games that reviewed above Stray why are they even on the nominee panel? If critical reception isn't being considered, don't call the award GotY, call it "most popular games we liked".
Who says they haven't?If the voters haven't even played the games that reviewed above Stray why are they even on the nominee panel? This is like how best animated film at the Oscars almost always just goes to Disney's biggest movie of the year.
I don't get why it's being assumed Stray is the only indie they played here or that they didn't play any of the other games.yeah like, what are we doing here? the panel is worthless if they only play the most popular games. i mean sure the average gamer is more likely to have played stray than the other indie games this year but if you're working for a games publication and have the responsibility to nominate what you think are the best games of the year surely more should be expected of you?
it is a failure from the panel imo that stray is the best they could come up with in a year when indies generally did much better than most AAA games.
Because it makes it easier to make the argument that Stray shouldn't be on the list.I don't get why it's being assumed Stray is the only indie they played here or that they didn't play any of the other games.
It's possible, the panels tend to hedge a bit so that games don't full sweep all categories.Realistically, do Xenoblade 3 has a chance to win best RPG against Elden Ring ?
tbh i also think xenoblade on the goty list feels weird as the obligatory nintendo nomination. The reactions to the Stray nomination in here are a bit tone deaf. On another forum folks could be making the same arguments about Xenoblade 3.
The highest rated Nintendo game of the year is pretty much a shoe in for Game of Year nominations, even when it's from a relatively niche series. This year it was a toss up between Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Bayonetta 3.The reactions to the Stray nomination in here are a bit tone deaf. On another forum folks could be making the same arguments about Xenoblade 3.
I would be astounded if it did. Don't get your hopes up.Realistically, do Xenoblade 3 has a chance to win best RPG against Elden Ring ?
No Xenoblade 3 is one of the highest reviewed games of the year with an 89 average. It would be absurd to argue it's not worthy of the nomination. Stray has an 83 average which is lower then dozens of other games that were nominated in other categories. It absolutely sticks out like a sore thumb in the GotY list. The reactions to the Stray nomination in here are a bit tone deaf. On another forum folks could be making the same arguments about Xenoblade 3.
Imagine if the fucking Uncharted movie or Sonic 2 beat out Arcane and Edgerunners lol.
It might have a shot because the Xenoblade community online (from what I've seen) seems pretty invested in this and might show up in a big way through voting, but Elden Ring is massive so it's hard to beat in any category, except for music which I honestly don't think it should have gotten nommed for at all.Realistically, do Xenoblade 3 has a chance to win best RPG against Elden Ring ?
I don't really understand the category either. Horizon Forbidden West and God of War: Ragnarok, while both great games in their own rights, are not what comes to mind when I think of "outstanding creative vision and innovation in game direction and design". Granted, I wouldn't vote Xenoblade Chronicles 3 for that category either. What qualifies a game for Best Direction? If Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is good enough to be up for GOTY and RPG, is Takahashi not also deserving of a game direction nod? I feel like Nintendo games never turn up in that category - probably Zelda did, and that's it?
I don't think Arcane loses that category, it was a cultural phenomenon.I totally expect that category to come down to Uncharted and Sonic lol.

yeah, i get why it's there when you list the alternatives. personally i would have liked to see bayo or kirby in its place, but realistically those two didn't have a chance.Nah, I think Xenoblade was nominated based on merit. The list of options starts to thin out after you get past ~6.
Bayonetta 3
Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Neon White
Immortality
Tunic
TMNT: Shredder's Revenge
The Last of Us: Part 1
Like, what would they have put in above Xenoblade? Outside of maybe Bayonetta 3, none of the other games comes close IMO. It did get a few other nominations as well so it wasn't a one and done thing.

BEST INDIE
Good to see Tunic nominated for action-adventure and both the indie categories. I really hope it picks up something, it interests me more than any of this years bigger titles. Also having ‘debut indie’ is a really good idea given how wide the ‘indie’ label is- you’ve got some titles made by a single developer working alone to release their first title, or something like Deaths Door where the core team is still just two people but they’ve already put out a hit game, and then others like Ender Lilies that had a couple of dozen staff working on art elements alone (just picked those last two as examples as the last credit sequences I can remember!).BEST DEBUT INDIE
- Cult of the Lamb (Massive Monster / Devolver Digital)
- Neon White (Angel Matrix/Annapurna)
- Sifu (Sloclap)
- Stray (BlueTwelve Studio/Annapurna)
- TUNIC (TUNIC Team/Finji)
- Neon White (Angel Matrix/Annapurna Interactive)
- NORCO (Geography of Robots/Raw Fury)
- Stray (BlueTwelve Studio/Annapurna)
- TUNIC (TUNIC Team/Finji)
- Vampire Survivors (poncle)
Not sure why Triangle Strategy is in RPG and not, er, Strategy.

Esports with five awards- that kinda seems like it needs its own event at this point. But I guess it’s a big source of cash for sponsorship etc.
