I expect a Jan/Feb reveal of Drake too.

And with Fire Emblem in Jan and Zelda coming up in May plus the onslaught of backlog games alone from Q4 2022 is enough for me, really. They can delay the general Direct until after Zelda.

Main interest/focus is Drake, everything else is icing.

new switch reveal at the end of january, direct about it later (early march?)
To be honest I think it'll be the opposite. They'll have a direct first then soon after reveal Drake showing the improvements to those games featured in the recent direct.

There is a big January game though, usually the directs don't happen until the marketing for a major/semi-major first party game is over.
This also weighs on my mind. We didn’t get a new Direct until Xenoblade 3 was out for example. So maybe the week after Engage? They do get to promote more in the Direct if it’s before, but they haven’t done that lately iirc.

I think they're going to want to put their best foot forward with future software. There will hopefully be no reason to reveal games with footage of them struggling to run on old hardware next year.

The way I see it, if the primary appeal of Drake is meant to be upgraded games (at first anyway) then it would do well to show exactly what the upgrades are. That means show the games running on the old hardware and then show the upgraded version of that too.

To me it makes sense to present it like this by showing Switch games at a direct then shortly after, while that direct is still fresh in people's memories, show the upgraded versions of those games.

Nobody panic, I've figured it all out.

They should add Funky Kong to every Drake-enhanced first party game so you can tell that it's better. Every game would get enhanced by it tbh. How many times have you thought about infinite shield surfing in BotW, for example? Tropical Freeze should get a second Funky.

Today would have been Starfield's release date. Oh well, got Tactics Ogre to keep me company.

Once the delivery person drops by, that is.

Edit: It happened!

what do you mean by shortly after? within a month?

After seeing the current state of Twitter, I had to do a double take to make sure this interaction was legitimate.

Welcome to MisterSpo's Semi-Serious Nintendo Prediction list!

This list is designed to be both vaguely plausible and to simultaneously include a number of Nintendo Speculation Tropes (that is, things people have predicted since FOREVER). Hold on to your butts.

TGA 2022: Nintendo don't bother with a Zelda trailer, though Tears of the Kingdom does get a few seconds of footage in the 2023 highlight reel. Instead, Nintendo announce: Metroid Prime: Definitive Edition. Launches on the Nintendo Switch family of systems on March 24th, 2023.

January 2023: Nintendo Direct speculation is running full tilt. People insist January is the month, while others point out that Nintendo's release calendar is stacked until May, and Zelda, and therefore announcements aren't really needed yet.

Nintendo kick off 2023 with a Fire Emblem Direct on January 5th. A week later, the Pokemon Company use a Pokemon Presents to announce a bunch of random updates, as well as season pass details for Scarlet and Violet.

And then - shock horror - Nintendo drop the bomb. On January 25th, 2023, Nintendo announce Nintendo Switch Plus: the latest member of the Nintendo Switch family is compatible with all existing software, features UHD resolutions in docked mode via DLSS, enabled by a second-generation chipset to provide better performance than ever before. Launches May 23rd alongside Zelda. Launch reveal shows new footage for Zelda and Pikmin 4, as well as existing titles like Splatoon 3 and Mario Kart 8 DX. The reveal trailer also showcases titles like Final Fantasy XV and Red Dead Redemption 2 running natively on the Plus, but no official confirmation of those games follows. Switch Plus includes front and rear facing cameras and a built in microphone, though Nintendo refuses to say how or even if these features will be used.

February 2023
: The Internet is ablaze, because the Switch Plus is both too expensive and impossible to preorder due to high demand. Journalists write columns predicting the system will fail without major third party blockbusters, and they note that Nintendo's release calendar is 'empty' after Zelda, which means the system won't have any momentum. Kirby launches on February 17th, with online conversation insisting Nintendo have lost touch by refusing to announce further games for their new system; nobody can agree if it is a successor or revision, and when the question is put to Miyamoto, he simply chuckles and talks about Pikmin and how exciting it would be if Pikmin 4 featured AR gameplay in portable mode as well as UHD resolutions in docked mode. Furukawa fires a single tranquilliser dart into Miyamoto's neck and, still smiling, Miyamoto slumps unconscious onto the desk in front of him.

Then, when all hope is lost by the entirely reasonable Internet, Nintendo confirm the first Nintendo Direct of 2023 will air on February 23rd and will feature news on games launching on the Nintendo Switch family of systems in the first half of 2023. People complain about Nintendo refusing to show their hand, especially because Nintendo won't show any holiday games.

The Direct opens with Super Mario Universe, the latest 3D Mario, out holidays 2023. Pikmin 4 AR gameplay and a September release are confirmed (we see Miyamoto carrying his Switch Plus around his kitchen, using the AR functions to have Pikmin harvest food from his fridge and bring it into the game). Star Fox Raiders, an AR spin-off, featuring gameplay oddly reminiscient of 3DS title Face Raiders, is confirmed as an eShop only launch title for Nintendo Switch Plus. Final Fantasy XV is exclusive to Nintendo Switch Plus. Red Dead Redemption 2 is not confirmed. Metroid Prime Definitive Edition includes new content. Advance Wars is still ignored.

interesting, I could see it

another direct with no hardware would feel like a sky falling moment but I guess by then we'll have some physical leaks
Directs rarely have hardware announcements (outside of special editions) even if new hardware is still imminent

All the people (and insiders saying this too) that Drake is only next iteration of Switch, it's still part of the Switch brand which makes total sense but I don't get how are the same people expecting the same like live press event as with a Switch. I don't see it personally.

You had me until FF XV.

I don't think they need a live event but they'll need 1) to show a bunch of detailed game footage which they didn't need to for the lite or OLED models and 2) have press hands on time to show the specific differences and benefits especially for handheld mode.

Don't think it'll be a live event. But a "Direct-like" YT live-stream is definitely in the play.
This. Direct format works for them and they prove it in the Switch event, when Koizumi did his magician things and going to another game. Plus it removes the akward live translation (say hello Switch event 2017). And if people are curious for live audience reaction the event would have been hosted at Japan again so the japanese audience reaction would still be non existent like last time.

Hmh, but i'm going to miss one thing ... i really would like to know if the former EA boss now has a second son he named Mario.

Someone please tell me that Twitter Blue did not have a longer life than Famicoins. I'm legit disappointed they're not displaying right now.

hypothetical Twitter announcement
Hypothetical because you don't think it'll happen or hypothetical because you don't think Twitter will still be around then?

Metroid Prime HD remaster Twitter drop announcement second half of November? After the Pokemon releases?
Here's your 20th anniversary celebration and you'll like it

you’re not getting new Switch info until March at the earliest >:)

This is all so believable that I'm pretty sure you've actually time travelled.

Why are we talking about the next Nintendo Direct when we are in Keighley season at the moment? It's that special time of year where we remember how much we disliked last years Game Awards, vow never to be fooled by Geoff again, only for us to give into his teases and start wondering if this will finally be the year Nintendo shows off a new Zelda or Metroid trailer. Then those things never happen, we complain how it was the worst Game Awards ever, and then repeat it all again next holiday.

Banking on Nintendo to bring the one announcement that everyone has been waiting for to the Keighleys: Nintendo Switch Sports Dodgeball and Basketball + Resort expansion with new single player content for high score chasers.

I've watched The Game Awards every year since 2018 in hopes that they would show Metroid. This is the first year where I won't watch TGA. As a result, this will probably be the one that they actually do show Metroid in and I'll miss out on seeing it live.
