News Nintendo Direct: The Super Mario Bros. Movie | 10/6 1:05 p.m. PT

Damn, someone broke NDA! Hahaha I appreciate the info, all the same

I’m also working in the anim industry! Are you on feature or TV? I’m working on TV myself.
Yeah they probably did lmao. I didn't sign shit, though ;-)

I'm in feature! ...for now. Current project has about another year on it, and I might nope out after that. I don't always work specifically on animation, that's just where I've happened to fall for the past couple projects.

Looking forward to this movie. At the worst, I think I will be entertained and have nice visual art to look at.\

Also looking forward to the large amount of people to be shocked this is primarily aimed at kids when it is revealed lol

Tbh, this.

Still, being for kids does not mean something has to be low quality, althrough a illumination mario film would never be anything special anyway so i dont blame them.

Oooh, a generalist! A rare breed around my neck of the anim industry woods.

If you’re noping out of feature, where you going after that?

Within or outside of the Nintendo community

if within, when has that ever stopped us before?

Sonic was voiced by a Youtuber in Germany?

Sadly, yes. Even if Sonic has a regular voice actor (and even a regular replacement VA) in the games and series. But for some reason they didn't hired his regular VA or his replacement... but hired some famous German YTuber (half a million followers) named Julien Bam.

Honestly, they could have revealed this Direct in a General Direct itself, when Miyamoto was mentioning the movie, they had no problem revealing final Smash presentation or a Animal Crossing Direct which was not even dated and plenty more.

It's separated to align with Illumination's promotion + Comic Con I believe

I hope the recording took place the same day as normal Direct so Miyamoto will be wearing that beautiful Pikmin t-shirt, it's free real estate.

imagining an alternate universe where pewdiepie voiced him in the US

damn it really is a miracle that SEGA pulled off not one but two great movies lol

While I am still  very concerned about the actual writing and tone of the film...I won't lie. They got the look down pretty damn well. This poster is filled with detail and color and life. It looks like Mario, but enough of its own thing to stand apart from the games without totally going in a different direction like the Sonic movies. The deviations in style (more realistic textures, making the Toads wear pants and have more visible legs, slight proportion tweaks and clothing changes here and there) all make sense for this being a big animated film. For a fan there's lots of cool references and nods, but even for someone who only kinda knows Mario, the bright whimsy is there and perfectly executed. Dare I say it...they nailed that aspect of the film so far.

Now the wait for the trailer...it's gonna be painful. Don't spoil me, folks - I'll be at work during the direct!!

EDIT: Also it's kinda wild to think this movie finally has a name. "The Super Mario Bros. Movie." Gets to the point. I dig it.

Not working on it, but I work in the industry and did get a little peak at it a few months ago. Saw this art and some other smaller ones and got a few details. For those worried about if Mario's face will look weird: don't worry. He just looks like Mario, with maybe a slight hint of that Illumination style making him look just a touch different than the games.

And there was a rumor some time ago that pipes would be central to the plot and there would be songs in the movie. Based on the prominence of pipes in all the art I saw, I'd say it's probably true. I did hear about songs, too, but can't vouch for whether they're like, in-movie musical numbers or just "Ed Sheeran wrote a song for the credits" type stuff. (Ed Sheeran is just a name I'm throwing out as a reference to the Pokemon news. He's not actually involved as far as I'm aware).

Sonic 2 really knocked my socks off. They reached the right balance between making an approachable childrens family movie, and pulling in some neat sonic moments, and lore for the fans. I really hope this mario movie strikes a similar balance

I am soo excited to see this cringefest.

Also im glad i was right and mario's design is just a more realistic but still toony version of the games. I mean it wasnt some amazing prediction but im sure some fpeople here thought they were not going to do realistic hair on him.
mario has had realistic hair for a while now, odyssey included

I think the neat thing about the poster is that it feels like it's actualy promising some kind of adventure? Like, it's all "I'm a-gonna climb this fucking hill" in idea. Kinda like it's showing the start of a journey.
It's a bit more exciting than if it were just "hey heres the main characters face, you better buy his merch!" or what not.

I like how they branded this Nintendo Direct: New Super Mario Bros. Movie and not something like New Super Mario Bros. Movie Direct, I see why they did that, it could have created confusion about something game related.

Are you working on Compositing or Editing or something to that effect? I'm a compositor in the anim industry (TV atm) and I imagine that's the kind of job you could switch between lots of different mediums.

Cool that you got to check this one out early, I think it's gonna be neat.

The website is also live

with a synopsis (seems placeholder)
oop this URL has been removed from the twitter page and replaced with the main universals pictures site

shout out to comp!!! the true unsung heroes

I know this may sounds ridiculous but since they are working on this movie since 2018 officially (I believe discussions started in 2017). I wonder if next 3D Mario will take some inspiration from it, not talking about anything specific I mean the look of Mario, Toads or anything else.

First off, people's main complaint of illimunination is completely fixed.

People always say how cheap illimunination's movies look, because they use a lot of asset reuse and a more simple artstyle. But honestly, this could potentially be a step above Pixar and Disney. They have so faithfully recreated and updated Nintendo's timeless artstyle that it looks a cut above everything else that isn't spider verse.

Yeah, I like that this is the tone the poster is setting. It's earnest, adventurous, and promising. I hope the film can capture that tone too.

I can see a situation where they borrow from each other. Odyssey already trended in a more realistic appearance for the character, this just feels like going further in that direction plus some Illumination stylistic decisions.

Yeah the cheap takes against illumination are so tired, especially a couple days out from us seeing more about this

With Nintendo involved as heavily as they are, it's just silly to think it will follow suit. Glad we're already seeing otherwise.
